Doane Softball 2012

PRESEASON OUTLOOK The Doane softball team will look to build on another solid campaign in which they went 11-11 in conference play in 2011. The Tigers have finished at .500 or better the last four years in the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC). Doane head coach Barry Mosley begins his ninth year and will rely on a strong returning offensive attack. For the Tigers to take steps forward this year, they will need improvement from the pitching staff and defense. Last year, Doane averaged more than two errors per game and the pitching staff had a team earned run average (ERA) of 5.64 and opponents hit .345 against the Tigers. Doane enters the year picked by the conference coaches to finish fourth. The Tigers have not placed higher than fifth in the conference over the last 10 years. Doane placed fourth in the GPAC in 2002, the highest conference finish since the GPAC formed in 2001. The winner of the GPAC Tournament in May GPAC Preseason Coaches’ Poll receives the conference bid to the NAIA National 1. Morningside (10) 100 Tournament. INFIELD The Tigers return each starter around the infield from last year’s team. Leading the way is First Team AllGPAC selection, shortstop Shelby Mendlik. Mendlik set the school record last year with 13 home runs while leading the team in hitting with a .413 average, 36 runs batted in and 84 defensive assists.

At first base, Alyssa Maraia posted the fourth-best fielding percentage in a single season last year with a mark of .989, committing two errors in 177 chances. At second base, Deidre Cardoza returns after posting a .262 average and 75 defensive assists. Gina Falciani returns at third base and tied Mendlik with 84 defensive assists. Offensively, she posted 20 runs batted in. Amber Stater returns at catcher and was among the team leaders in walks with 10. Samantha Arlt transferred in this season and will also see some time behind the plate.

OUTFIELD Doane returns two players in the outfield who earned First Team All-GPAC honors last year, Brooke Sampson and Andrea Gonzales. They will be asked to lead once again, both on defense and in the offense. Sampson (pictured) enters the year three home runs shy of the school record for career blasts. After posting nine home runs in each of her first two seasons, she has the mark of 21 home runs held by Pamela Masker in sight. Last year she was second on the team with 31 RBIs and led the team with 37 runs scored. Gonzales finished with a team-high seven stolen bases last year while batting .408 with 36 runs scored. She added team-highs with 12 doubles and nine outfield assists. The spot in right field will be up for grabs entering the season. Kylie Garrett returns with experience in that position from a year ago but will likely handle pitching duties exclusively. Nichole Diaz and Whitney Hinn will be the primary newcomers competing for time in the outfield. PITCHING Garrett returns after leading the Tigers in wins last year as she went 6-6 on the season, including a 5-2 mark in conference play. She earned honorable mention honors in the GPAC a year ago. Jenna Alswager posted the best earned run average on the team last year with a mark of 4.58 but was dealt the tough hand when it came to decisions, finishing with a 3-12 record. She led the team with four complete games. Megan Wingate went 1-2 in 14 appearances with a 5.10 earned run average. She held opponents to a team-low, .307 batting average. Mendlik may see some time in the pitcher’s circle after going 4-3 last year with a 4.82 earned run average. Kelsey Huenink also figures in to the pitching rotation.

Ninth-Year Head Coach

BARRY MOSLEY Barry Mosley took over the Tiger program in June 2003 with his first season taking place in Spring 2004. Over his first eight years, the Tigers have gone 161-194 with 41 players earning All-GPAC honors. His first couple of years involved rebuilding the Tiger softball program back to where it was when Coach Don Miller was at the helm in the late 90’s and early 2000’s. His first recruit class, those that were freshmen in the 2005 season, would help change the program. The Tiger squad set a school record for wins in 2006 with 28 and placed six players on the all-conference list. The team also qualified for the first NAIA regional tournament appearance. In 2008, Doane posted 27 wins and finished runner-up in the GPAC Tournament. Six players were on the all-conference list and the team qualified for the last NAIA regional tournament. The NAIA went to direct conference qualifying for the national tournament after the year. During the 2010 season, Mosley surpassed Coach Miller as the winningest coach in school history. Doane went on two win 23 games during the season, the fourth time the Tigers surpassed 20 wins under Mosley’s direction.

6

Doane Softball 2012

Mosley has coached softball and baseball at every level. Mosley’s most impressive coaching stint came as head coach of Lincoln Pius X high school (2001-2004), where Mosley led the Thunderbolts to three state tournament appearances, one championship and two third place finishes. In 2003, Mosley served as an assistant at Concordia University, handling the infielders and pitchers for the team that set a school-record for wins and qualified for the NAIA Regional tournament. Mosley has also dedicated himself to local community efforts by organizing select baseball and softball teams for youth players. In 1993, he founded the Lincoln Sox baseball program, and in 2001, he formed one of the best select softball programs in Lincoln, the Nebraska Blue Diamonds. Mosley still works as program director for the Blue Diamonds. During his personal time, Coach Mosley gives private instruction to baseball and softball players of all ages. He has been invited to speak at coaching clinics and softball camps and has contributed coaching articles to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association monthly newsletter. In addition to recruiting during the summer and fall months, he frequently travels the nation as an invited coach for Triple Crown Sports, conducting instructional camps, skill development sessions and all-star games. Barry and his wife, Joanne, have three children: Justin, Stephanie and Katie. Media & Recruit Guide 29 The Tigers finished the 2011 season with a 14-27 overall and 11-11 in the GPAC. The tough non-conference schedule benefited the Tigers as they began conference play in late March. Doane advanced to the GPAC Tournament before seeing the season come to a close. Conference play opened with a bang against Midland University. The two teams set the GPAC record for combined runs in a single game and for a doubleheader. Midland took game one, 13-12, while the Tigers took game two, 21-20. The 41 runs scored in game two and the 66 runs scored in the doubleheader were both conference records. Doane’s record books also took a hit. Andrea Gonzales scored five runs in game two, a school record. Gina Falciani tied the school record with seven RBIs. The team’s 21 runs and 19 RBIs were both team marks. Doane had 21 hits in game two and 19 hits in game one, setting the top two marks in the Doane books. The Tigers also tied the record for doubles with six. The Tigers’ offense carried the team most of the season, finishing with a team average of .303. Doane had four players hit over .333 on the season, including two batters over .400. Unfortunately, opponents hit .345 on the year and scored 73 more runs, almost two runs a game more than Doane. Shelby Mendlik’s first year with the Tigers was a historical one as she set the school record with 13 home runs in a season. She also batted .413 with 36 RBIs. Andrea Gonzales transferred in to Doane and hit .408 with 36 runs scored and 12 doubles. Brooke Sampson matched her home run total from 2010 as she smacked nine, second most in school history. The trio earned First Team All-GPAC honors. Christy Kobza, the lone senior, finished with a .378 batting average and posted the secondmost career doubles (33) and RBIs (95) in school history. Kylie Garrett posted strong conference pitching numbers, going 5-2 in the GPAC. She led the team with six wins on the season. Both players received honorable mention All-GPAC.

Media & Recruit Guide 31 Welcome From the GPAC Commissioner... Welcome to the GPAC website! The membership of the Great Plains Athletic Conference welcomes you to our on-line home. We hope that you find all the infomation you need about the GPAC on this site, but if you have additional quesitons please contact me at corey.westra@gpacsports.com. The GPAC is extremely proud of our athletic accomplishments, but we are also pleased to announce that in 2010-2011 our league totaled 528 NAIA Scholar-Athletes! Our student athletes work very hard to balance academics with athletics and this is a testament to the administrators, faculty, and coaches in the league. 2011-12 marks our 12th year as the Great Plains Athletic Conference, with the league founded originally as the Nebraska-Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (NIAC) in 1969. Thank you again for taking the time to visit our website and supporting the more than 4,000 student-athletes in the GPAC! The History of the Great Plains Athletic Conference... The Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) is an affiliated conference of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), consisting of 11 private, faith-based colleges and universities in Nebraska, Iowa and South Dakota. Originally founded in 1969 as the Nebraska Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (NIAC), the league retains five of the six charter members - Concordia, Doane, Hastings, Midland and Nebraska Wesleyan. In 1992, the NIAC added Northwestern and became the Nebraska-Iowa Athletic Conference. Eight years later, Dakota Wesleyan, Dordt, Mount Marty and Sioux Falls joined the conference which became the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) in 2000-2001. Briar Cliff entered the league in 2002-2003 and Morningside became the 13th member starting with the 2003-2004 school year. Both schools are in Sioux City, Iowa. In the summer of 2010 Dana College ceased operations and in 2011 The University of Sioux Falls left the GPAC to join NCAA Division II and the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. The GPAC sponsors 19 intercollegiate sports - nine for women and ten for men - and awards an All-Sports Trophy based on the final league standings and conference meet results at the end of each school year. Wrestling has added as a sanctioned GPAC sport for 2006-2007. The GPAC is the only NAIA conference in the country to sponsor wrestling. Beginning with the 2005-2006 school year, the GPAC started awarding the Christopherson All-Academic Award. The award is a traveling trophy to be presented annually to the GPAC institution with the best academic performance by its studentathletes in all sports. The award is named in honor of Dr. Myrvin Christopherson, who recently retired as President of Dana College. Christopherson had served as the first chair of the GPAC Council of Presidents. The GPAC has 19 NAIA National Champions... In 2000-2001 the Northwestern women and men won NAIA Division II National Basketball Championships, while the Doane women shared the outdoor NAIA Track and Field title. 2001-2002 brought two NAIA titles to our league. The Hastings women won the NAIA Division II National Basketball title, while Doane’s women won the NAIA Outdoor Track and Field Championship outright. In 2002-2003 the GPAC won two more National Championships with the Hastings women repeating as NAIA Division II National Basketball Champions (defeating GPAC foe Dakota Wesleyan in the title game), and the Northwestern men winning the NAIA Division II crown for the second time in three years. The Morningside women’s basketball teams won the 2004 and 2005 titles in front of the hometown Sioux City fans at the Tyson Events Center. In 2006 the Hastings women’s basketball team won their third basketball title in five years. The GPAC won six straight NAIA Division II Women’s Basketball National Championships from 2001 to 2006. Also, in 2006 Dana College claimed the NAIA National Wrestling Championship, while the Nebraska Wesleyan’s men’s golf team won the NCAA III National Title. In the fall of 2006 when Sioux Falls won the Football National Championship in Savannah, Tennessee. The Northwestern women’s basketball team capped a 35-2 season in winning the 2008 NAIA Division II National Championship. The University of Sioux Falls won their second NAIA Football Title in three years by claiming the 2008 National Championship in Rome, Georgia, on December 20. In March of 2009 the Morningside Women’s Basketball team capped a perfect 38-0 season by claiming the NAIA Division II Women’s Basketball Championship (defeating GPAC foe Hastings in the title game). On December 19, 2009, the Sioux Falls Football Team Claimed Back-to-Back National Titles and won their fourth overall National Title while capping a 15-0 season in Rome, Georgia. In March of 2010 Northwestern’s women’s basketball team won the NAIA Division II National Championship. In the fall of 2010 the Hastings Men’s Soccer Team capped a perfect 25-0 season by claiming the NAIA National Title. The Hastings Women’s Soccer team were NAIA National Runner-Ups in the fall of 2010. Northwestern repeated as NAIA women’s basketball champions in 2010-11 marking the eleventh champion from the GPAC in NAIA Division II basketball in the last 12 years.

Register online at PlayNAIA.org. • •

Create an account with a valid email address. Pay the one-time registration fee ($60 domestic students / US$85 international students) or indicate qualification for a fee waiver.

Within the online registration you will create a profile including:

About Me - Includes basic contact information, previous residences during high school and any military service history My Academic Info - Records the student’s high school experience (including home school and GED) and colleges attended for transfers or current NAIA students. My Sports Experience - Collects information on athletic experiences outside of the high school setting. My NAIA Connections is an optional feature that allows a student to create an additional Sport Resume that can be shared with NAIA institutions. Once the online registration is complete, the prospective student submits the profile to the NAIA Eligibility Center for evaluation.

Test scores When a prospective student-athlete takes the ACT or SAT, he/she must specify the code “9876” when registering for the exam in order to have the test scores sent directly to the NAIA Eligibility Center. Please register with the NAIA Eligibility Center before having your test scores sent.

Transcript Upon graduation from high school, transferring from a two- or four-year college, or completing one or more semesters at an NAIA school, prospective student-athlete must ask their high school guidance counselors or college registrars to send official transcripts to the NAIA Eligibility Center. Official transcripts must be: • Stamped with the official school seal and/or signature, and • Sent in an official school envelope that is marked by a school official over the seal, showing that a school official was the last person to handle the document. If you are sending transcripts from several schools, you can place the already sealed official transcripts into one, larger envelope and mail them together. Transcripts received directly from students/parents without the school-sealed envelope are not official and will not be accepted. Please register with the NAIA Eligibility Center and complete your academic information before having transcripts sent. This will allow you to generate your personal transcript cover page you can give to your school to be mailed with your documents. NOTE: Students who finish their junior year with an overall 3.00 GPA on a 4.00 scale, and have at least an 18 ACT or 860 SAT test score, can receive an early eligibility decision. Those students should request their high school send an official transcript at the end of their junior year.

ABOUT DOANE The Doane College mission is to provide an exceptional liberal arts education in a creative, inclusive, and collaborative community where faculty and staff work closely with undergraduate and graduate students preparing them for lives rooted in intellectual inquiry, ethical values, and a commitment to engage as leaders and responsible citizens in the world. When Thomas Doane, chief civil engineer of the Burlington and Missouri River Railroad, began building the railroad across Nebraska in the late 1800s, his goal was not only to enhance civilized life for the pioneers, but also to build a liberal arts college on the Nebraska frontier. He and the Congregationalists soon chose the town of Crete, overlooking the Big Blue River, for a college on the plains. The college maintains historical ties with the United Church of Christ. Thomas Doane’s vision of a college in the tradition of Harvard and Yale has become a reality. Fully established in 1872, Doane is Nebraska’s first private liberal arts and sciences college. From the college’s formative years under the tutelage of first president David Brainerd Perry to the current 12th president, Dr. Jacque Carter, the college continues its purpose to educate students to serve and lead in the state, the nation and the world. Today, the college serves more than 3,200 students in bachelor’s and master’s degree programs in Crete, Lincoln, and Grand Island, Neb., and focuses on providing an exceptional educational experience for all students. The Crete campus serves approximately 1,000 residential students on 300 scenic acres. Designated a state arboretum, the once treeless landscape now boasts more than 100 varieties of trees, numerous plantings, ponds, and swans. Doane College offers bright, ambitious, and service-minded students a world-class liberal arts and sciences education grounded in the uncompromising pursuit of leadership through academic excellence, innovation, community, and the creation of a special sense of place for each individual. Leadership development underscores the students’ experience in all aspects of the college. Doane’s unique Hansen Leadership Program works with students to help enhance their leadership skills and talents, through speakers and events, alumni mentors, course offerings, community service, and other activities. Additional highlights include the four-year graduation guarantee for students…graduate within four years or the college will pay for a fifth year of course work. A travel scholarship for students provides opportunities to travel on college-sponsored trips in the U.S. or abroad. Doane College was the first institution in the nation to initiate a warranty for its education graduates to hiring school districts, and guarantees teacher education graduates a position. Doane College also offers three graduate degree programs, including the Master of Arts in Management (MAM), Master of Arts in Counseling (MAC), and Master of Education (MED) in Curriculum and Instruction or Educational Leadership.

DOANE ACADEMIC SUPPORT The transition from high school to college level academics is a dramatic one, but it need not be traumatic if students make use of the resources Doane College provides through the Academic Support Center (ASC). In contrast to many students’ high school ol course experiences, most college level courses demand a whole new study and exam preparation strategy. Most college professors fully expect that students will complete the assigned textbook readings and come to class prepared to ask questions and engage in discussion generated by the reading assignment. Professors’ lectures complement and supplement the required reading assignment, but they are not intended to o substitute for required readings. Likewise, students must attend lectures and labs if they are to gain the full benefit of their educational opportunity. Completing the assigned readings, attending lectures and labs, being able to record accurate reading/lecture notes and reviewing their notes regularly in preparation for exams and finals are all critical to any student’s academic success. Doane’s Academic Support Center (ASC) provides academic assistance, training and intervention to students who wish to improve their academic performance. The ASC consists of two separate programs: The Doane Learning Center (DLC) and Doane Student Support Services (DSS). Both programs are housed in the Student Services area on the lower level of Perry Campus Center. The Doane Learning Center is a walk-in center for students wanting to raise their grades or improve their study skills. The program provides academic counseling, peer tutoring, and writing assistance. Doane Student Support Services (DSS) is a TRIO program, federally funded through the United States Department of Education. It assists eligible students in reaching their academic and personal goals through a variety of activities. Notification of eligibility is sent to new students in the first few weeks of the fall and spring terms and is dependent on American citizenship AND family income level, (or) student disability status or both custodial parents/guardians having less than a four-year degree.
