2010-11 Doane Men’s Track & Field

PRESEASON OUTLOOK The Doane men’s track and field program continued their recent run atop the GPAC last year with a sweep of the conference crowns for the third straight year. Doane must replace a total of 31 all-conference performances from last year, with 17 of those coming during the indoor season. Three seniors return from last year who earned All-GPAC honors. Adam Bosley posted six all-conference performances while Jacob Clouse added three. Jake McCaffrey earned honors during the outdoor season. Chase Trecek transferred in from Dana College where he earned all-conference honors as a junior. The strength of the Tiger squad is in the sprints. Doane returns all of their allconference recipients and added a national champion in the process. Bosley will be joined by Vince Martinez, Virgil Mitchell, Ben McCaleb and Alex Reynolds. Mitchell was the GPAC Indoor Male Athlete-of-the-Year last season. BJ Lawrence joins the mix after winning the 100m NAIA Outdoor title for Dana College last year. Middle distance and distance will be looking for some athletes to step forward and replace 10 All-GPAC performances. Jens Scholl will be back during the outdoor season where he earned All-American honors. Zach Christensen earned all-conference honors in the indoor 1000m run. The relays will be strong once again and the outdoor 4x100m relay team could be exciting to watch if all stay healthy. The indoor 4x400m team returns Bosley, Martinez and Mitchell while the 4x800m team featured Jamil Chehade, Omar Fernandez and Jory Pflasterer. Returning from the 4x100m outdoor team are Adam Baxa, Bosley, Martinez and McCaleb. The 4x400m team returns Martinez, Reynolds and Scholl while the 4x800m team returns Chehade, Pflasterer and Scholl. In the field events, Brian Hubbert returns in the triple jump with Derek Wegner returning in the long jump. Wegner earned all-conference in the high jump as well. Nate Teten and Ethan Shunkwiler are the top returning pole vaulters. In the throws, Clouse and Trecek will be joined by Alvin Voss, Vince Krejci and Zack Lindlsey. Lindsley earned All-American honors in the discus last year. McCaffrey is joined by Micah Marvin in the javelin. The multi-events are led by conference champion Rob Keeney. Keeney, along with Brad Higgins, for a tough duo at the conference level. Dustin Schwartz also earned all-conference honors last year. The hurdle events will be led by Mitchell and Keeney, both all-conference performers a year ago.

The Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) is an affiliated conference of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), consisting of 12 private, faith-based colleges and universities in Nebraska, Iowa and South Dakota. Originally founded in 1969 as the Nebraska Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (NIAC), the league retained all six of its charter members - Concordia, Dana, Doane, Hastings, Midland and Nebraska Wesleyan. In 1992, the NIAC added Northwestern and became the Nebraska-Iowa Athletic Conference. Eight years later, Dakota Wesleyan, Dordt, Mount Marty and Sioux Falls joined the conference which became the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) in 2000-2001. Briar Cliff entered the league in 2002-2003 and Morningside became the 13th member starting with the 2003-2004 school year. On June 30, 2010, Dana closed to give the GPAC 12 members. The GPAC has 17 NAIA National Champions... In 2000-2001 the Northwestern women and men won NAIA Division II National Basketball Championships, while the Doane women shared the outdoor NAIA Track and Field title. 2001-2002 brought two NAIA titles to our league. The Hastings women won the NAIA Division II National Basketball title, while Doane’s women won the NAIA Outdoor Track and Field Championship outright. In 2002-2003 the GPAC won two more National Championships with the Hastings women repeating as NAIA Division II National Basketball Champions (defeating GPAC foe Dakota Wesleyan in the title game), and the Northwestern men winning the NAIA Division II crown for the second time in three years. The Morningside women’s basketball teams won the 2004 and 2005 titles in front of the hometown Sioux City fans at the Tyson Events Center. In 2006 the Hastings women’s basketball team won their third basketball title in five years. The GPAC won six straight NAIA Division II Women’s Basketball National Championships from 2001 to 2006. Also, in 2006 Dana College claimed the NAIA National Wrestling Championship, while the Nebraska Wesleyan’s men’s golf team won the NCAA III National Title. In the fall of 2006 when Sioux Falls won the Football National Championship in Savannah, Tennessee. The Northwestern women’s basketball team capped a 35-2 season in winning the 2008 NAIA Division II National Championship. The University of Sioux Falls won their second NAIA Football Title in three years by claiming the 2008 National Championship in Rome, Georgia, on December 20. In March of 2009 the Morningside Women’s Basketball team capped a perfect 38-0 season by claiming the NAIA Division II Women’s Basketball Championship (defeating GPAC foe Hastings in the title game). On December 19, 2009, the Sioux Falls Football Team Claimed Back-to-Back National Titles and won their fourth overall National Title while capping a 15-0 season in Rome, Georgia. In March of 2010 Northwestern’s women’s basketball team won the NAIA Division II National Championship. The GPAC has now won nine of the last ten NAIA Division II Women’s Basketball Championships! The GPAC has many individual NAIA and NCAA Division III National Champions in track and field (Nebraska Wesleyan is dual member of both the NAIA and NCAA Division III). Corey Westra of Sioux City, Iowa, is the GPAC Commissioner and Information Director.

2010-11 Doane Men’s Track & Field

DOANE MEN’S TRACK & FIELD HISTORY Doane men’s track & field has a long standing history, with documentation dating back to the early 1900’s. Numerous athletes have gone through the rigors of academics and track & field, leading to 332 All-American performances and 58 Scholar-Athletes. Doane has also had 34 national champions crowned over the years. Conference dominance has gone in streaks for Doane. The Tigers won 26 indoor and outdoor conference titles from 1970-1988 while members of the Nebraska Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. When the NIAC added Northwestern College, Doane was able to win one indoor title over eight seasons. The Great Plains Athletic Conference formed in Fall 2000 and Doane claimed the first indoor title. The Tigers were held out of the winner’s circle for five years before they claimed the 2007 indoor crown. Since that time, Doane has won seven of the eight indoor and outdoor titles. Nationally, the Tigers’ best finish came during the 2002 indoor season when they took runner-up honors. Doane placed third at the 2001 indoor meet. The Tigers have placed inside the Top 10 during the indoor season the past six seasons (2005-10). In outdoor competition, Doane has placed in the Top 10 in seven of the past eight years (2003-10) with a fourth place finish in 2008. The Tigers’ best outdoor finish came in 1978 at the NCAA Division III meet when they placed third with 28 points. Athletic excellence has allowed several Tigers to earn multiple All-American honors. Three individuals have earned 10 All-American honors. They are John Bauman, Lance Foster and Greg Ray. Bauman and Ray have both been inducted into the NAIA Hall-ofFame. Ray was a four-time national champion and Foster claimed one individual crown. Joe Chapman was the first All-American in school history, claiming the honor in the 1951 220yd low hurdles. Don Vyhnalek was the first two-sport All-American at Doane, earning the honor in basketball and track. Dean White was the first two-event All-American in 1962, placing in the 5000m run and the 3000m steeplechase. Doane’s first national champion was Fred Davis. Davis claimed the 1967 and 1968 indoor shot put titles. Davis was also a First Team All-American in football and a member of two undefeated Doane football teams. The most recent national champion is Jared Schuurmans. He claimed the 2010 discus title in Marion, Ind. In 2009, he became the first Tiger to participate in the USA Track & Field National Championships.

Media & Recruit Guide 41 NAIA Hall-of-Fame Honorees James Dutcher - Class of 1972 Dutcher was a three-sport letter winner at Doane College. He later went on to coach the Tiger football and track teams from 1942-52. During his coaching tenure, Doane won three conference titles in both football and track. In 1951, he was named the Omaha World Herald Coach-of-the-Year. Raymond Alf - Class of 1974 Alf was a two-time captain of the Tiger track team. In 1928, he won the Illinois Relays’ 300yd dash. He was also a four-event champion in the Nebraska Conference Championships, winning the 100 yd, 220yd, 440yd and low hurdles. Doane was the state champions in three of his four years. Fred Beile - Class of 1987 Beile is one of the all-time great track & field coaches. At Doane, he coached 327 AllAmericans, 60 individual national champions and two team national champions. He was named the NAIA Coach-of-the-Year six times. Gregg Larson - Class of 1999 Larson was a two-time national champion in the 800m run, claiming the crowns in 1985 & 1987. He earned All-American honors four times in the outdoor 800m and twice in the indoor 1000m run. John Baumann - Class of 2007 When Bauman completed his competitive career at Doane, he left as the all-time leader in All-American honors with 10. Only two others have equalled the mark that still stands today. Seven of his All-American honors have come in the shot put. Greg Ray - Class of 2007 Ray is one of three individuals to earn All-American honors 10 times while at Doane. Ray was also a three-time national champion for the Tigers. He is one of the top sprinters all-time at Doane. Dave Symonsbergen - Class of 2007 Symonsbergen was an eight-time All-American and two-time national champion. 2010-11 Doane Men’s Track & Field

ABOUT DOANE When Thomas Doane, chief civil engineer of the Burlington and Missouri River Railroad, began building the railroad across Nebraska in the late 1800s, his goal was not only to enhance civilized life for the pioneers, but also to build a liberal arts college on the Nebraska frontier. He and the Congregationalists soon chose the town of Crete, overlooking the Big Blue River, for a college on the plains. The college maintains historical ties with the United Church of Christ. Thomas Doane’s vision of a college in the tradition of Harvard and Yale has become a reality. Fully established in 1872, Doane is Nebraska’s first private liberal arts and sciences college. From the college’s formative years under the tutelage of first president David Brainerd Perry to the current 11th president, Jonathan Brand, the college continues its purpose to educate students to serve and lead in the state, the nation and the world. The Crete campus serves approximately 1,000 residential students on 300 scenic acres. Designated a state arboretum, the once treeless landscape now boasts more than 100 varieties of trees, numerous plantings, ponds, and swans. Additional highlights include the four-year graduation guarantee for students…graduate within four years or the college will pay for a fifth year of course work. A travel scholarship for students provides opportunities to travel on college-sponsored trips in the U.S. or abroad. Doane College was the first institution in the nation to initiate a warranty for its education graduates to hiring school districts, and guarantees teacher education graduates a position. Doane College also offers three graduate degree programs, including the Master of Arts in Management (MAM), Master of Arts in Counseling (MAC), and Master of Education (MED) in Curriculum and Instruction or Educational Leadership. Doane Mission Statement Doane College, a comprehensive college in the liberal arts tradition, offers an academic curriculum to stimulate inquiry, enhance knowledge, and promote examination and development of values and perspectives through majors and the liberal arts. The college prepares students by offering academic and co-curricular opportunities to develop abilities and skills needed in and out of the workplace. Doane also provides opportunities for students, faculty and staff to develop and practice leadership skills. Doane College is a private, independent, coeducational college serving both traditional and nontraditional students. The college continues its historical relationship with the United Church of Christ and its tradition of promoting free inquiry. The college offers instruction in the liberal arts and related professional and pre-professional areas leading to the bachelor of arts, bachelor of science, and master’s degrees. At both the undergraduate and graduate levels, Doane is committed to student-centered education characterized by close student-teacher relationships. The college serves students through residential campus programs, off-campus programs, and graduate programs. Doane seeks to attract students, faculty, and staff with diverse geographic, racial, ethnic, religious, economic, and cultural backgrounds. As the college pursues its mission, students will demonstrate the ability: I. To read, listen, write, and speak effectively. II. To think critically. III. To integrate theories with practice. IV. To collect and process information by selecting methods to improve understanding and solve problems. V. To use problem-solving skills effectively. VI. To work with others. VII. To act ethically and to lead responsibly.

ADMISSION OFFICE Why Doane? Directions Program: Directions is a first-year program for high school leaders who would like to continue leading at Doane College. Each year, the Director of HLP selects 24 incoming freshmen (first-year students) to join Directions. Directions is a unique opportunity for you to jumpstart your leadership career on campus. Travel Scholarship: Education may well begin at home, but it shouldn’t end there. At Doane, we believe the only way to provide a well-rounded education is by giving you the opportunity to experience the world. That’s why we sponsor over a dozen domestic and international travel programs each year. When you enroll as a first-year student, Doane will provide up to $1000 for travel course expenses during your junior or senior years. Graduation Guarantee: Doane College was one of the first colleges in the nation to initiate a FourYear Graduation Guarantee. We believe a quality education can and should be achieved within four years, and our curriculum is designed for that very purpose. Opportunities to participate and get involved: Over 90% of Doane students participate in one of the 60+ clubs and organizations. In the last five years, students have participated in 663 internships.

DOANE ACADEMIC SUPPORT The transition from high school to college level academics is a dramatic one, but it need not be traumatic if students make use of the resources Doane College provides through the Academic Support Center (ASC). In contrast to many students’ high school course experiences, most college level courses demand a whole new study and exam preparation strategy. Most college professors fully expect that students will complete the assigned textbook readings and come to class prepared to ask questions and engage in discussion generated by the reading assignment. Professors’ lectures complement and supplement the required reading assignment, but they are not intended to substitute for required readings. Likewise, students must attend lectures and labs if they are to gain the full benefit of their educational opportunity. Completing the assigned readings, attending lectures and labs, being able to record accurate reading/lecture notes and reviewing their notes regularly in preparation for exams and finals are all critical to any student’s academic success. Doane’s Academic Support Center (ASC) provides academic assistance, training and intervention to students who wish to improve their academic performance. The ASC consists of two separate programs: The Doane Learning Center (DLC) and Doane Student Support Services (DSS). Both programs are housed in the Student Services area on the lower level of Perry Campus Center. The Doane Learning Center is a walk-in center for students wanting to raise their grades or improve their study skills. The program provides academic counseling, peer tutoring, and writing assistance. Doane Student Support Services (DSS) is a TRIO program, federally funded through the United States Department of Education. It assists eligible students in reaching their academic and personal goals through a variety of activities. Notification of eligibility is sent to new students in the first few weeks of the fall and spring terms and is dependent on American citizenship AND family income level, (or) student disability status or both custodial parents/guardians having less than a four-year degree.

DOANE FACILITIES The Doane College athletic facilities continue to change and improve each year. The George & Sally Haddix Center opened in Fall 2010 and is the home for Doane volleyball, basketball and dance/cheerleading. Now the center point between all athletic facilities, the Haddix Center also hosts the coaches’ offices, weight room and fitness center. You can find interactive computers in the front lobby that will introduce Doane Hall-of-Fame and Honor D receipents. Doane Athletic Club (DAC) memberships allow all members to utilize the weight room and fitness center as well. Located on the northeast end of the Doane campus, Fuhrer Field House is home to Tiger indoor track & field. The Field House is also used for early season practices for baseball, softball, and tennis and will serve as an alternate practice facility for volleyball and basketball following the completion of the Haddix Center. The renovation of the athletic training room is the most recent improvement to the facility. Renovations are scheduled to increase the track size to 200 meters while redesigning the layout for tennis courts, batting cages and seating. Simon Field was constructed in 1929 following a generous gift from G. Eli Simon, a Cambridge, Nebraska, attorney and father of a graduating senior. Simon Field is located on the north side of the campus and is home to the football and soccer teams. Lauritsen Track surrounds the field and is home to the track & field teams. Field turf was installed in 2000. As part of the renovation, a new outdoor, polyurethane track was also installed. Both the field and track are used by the Crete community and Crete High School. The press box was wired with Internet capabilities in the summer of 2004. Located on the eastern end of campus, The Den is the alternate home to Doane soccer. The first home of Doane Soccer, The Den is a grass surface used mostly for practices. The Jose M. & Elizabeth Ledon Ballfield Complex opened in March 2007. The complex is located on the east end of campus and is home to Tiger baseball and softball. The facility includes batting cages, a two-story press box and concession stand.

DOANE SPORTS INFORMATION The Doane College Sports Information Office is always interested in helping members of the media in their coverage of Tiger Athletics. Athlete features and interviews, credential request, photographs and statistics are available through the sports information office. Rick Schmuecker joined the Tiger team in August 2001 as Assistant Sports Information Director, following four years as a student at Midland Lutheran College. In May 2006, he was named head of the Sports Information Department by Athletic Director Greg Heier. At Doane, Rick is seen at all home athletic events, usually in the designated media areas, either keep stats, broadcasting or both. He has received publication honors by the NAIA-SIDA in football and soccer as well as with the Doane athletic Web site. In June 2008, he received 2nd Place honors for the women’s soccer media guide, the highest honor received by himself or Doane through the NAIA-SIDA contests. In 2009, he received 2nd Place in CoSIDA’s Special Events publication for the volleyball post-season game program. In Fall 2010, Dave Ziola became Assistant Sports Information Director. An assistant cross country and track & field coach, Ziola will specialize in those two sports for the office. He also teaches in the physical education department at Doane. However, the work that is done could not be completely accomplished without several student workers who also help out with game days and office work. These students are responsible for helping with statistics, running game clocks and setup for games. Their time and commitment is greatly appreciated. Students working for the sports information office in 2010-11 are: Kelly Baer, Cheryl Braithwait, Ashley Daily, Mindy Dymacek, Kelsie Grgurich, Veronica LeDuc, Jacy Ludwig, Jordan Ludwig, Brittany Luettel, Brittany Lurz, Morgan Dubas, Lisa Lord, Megan Meduna, Cassie Reicks, Brooke Sampson and Madara Upeneice.
