14 Reliability of Future Power Grids
GRIDS DEVELOPING FAST Power grids are developing very quickly. This is due to the new challenges associated with renewable integration, the availability of new technologies like power electronics and storage, and also due to the mind-set of customers evolving (awareness and involvement). Furthermore, there are the regulations to channel development towards a sustainable future energy system and thereby solve the energy trilemma (Figure 7). These rapid developments in different areas, combined with increased uncertainty, inevitably lead to an increase in risks.
DEVELOPMENTS IN GENERATION, LOADS, AND MARKETS The growth of the renewable share creates more, larger, and faster fluctuations in generation, leading to a paradigm shift from “generation matches load” to “load matches generation”. Increased dependency on electricity and the democratisation of power generation – the emergence of prosumers – gives rise to new actors, new roles, and new markets.
