E Editor’s Note

# W H AT M A K E S YO U S T R O N G ‘What makes you strong?’ We asked this question a great deal when putting together this issue. As we interview the young and talented one: Devano Danendra, we found that to explore what we already have actually can make us happy and strong. Even in the time of pandemic, Devano had never complained, instead he explored his skills in music and got inspiration from the big stars: BTS.

There is also Julian Latif, a fashion photographer who found his strength in modelling as well. In our fashion pages, Julian braves himself to be the model, a role that usually he direct behind his lens.

As usual, we have some beautiful (and strong) fashion stories celebrating the best of the Spring/Summer 2021 collections.

Well, we (strongly) hope you enjoy the issue!

Chiné and Ikat: A Celebration of Savoir-Faire

The spring-summer 2021 ready-to-wear show offers a fresh opportunity to bear witness to the pluralistic richness of cultures through the singular and powerful prism of women’s voices. Starting from that premise, Maria Grazia Chiuricombines, at the heart of her collection, two precious techniques – Indonesian ikat and chiné, which was developed in Europe in the 16th century – both of which consist of coloring the warp threads before weaving, true standard-bearers and the Ariadne’s thread behind these unique silhouettes. Originally created in Asia, these emblematic ancestral fabrics have given life to numerous variations and reinventions that share a common origin. One of the Creative Director’s favorite materials for its graphic, couture spirit, chiné enhanced a flared coat from 1959 — evoking the Trapeze line created for Dior by the founding couturier’s successor, Yves Saint Laurent. Today, its delicate silk threads constellate reversible coats and jackets, reinterpreting House symbols such as paisley and the signature toile de Jouy. Like a fascinating encounter, the reverse side of these pieces is patterned with traditional ikats made by weavers in Bali, reflecting an infinitely precious savoir-faire. This extremely refined, exceptional craftsmanship is a language in itself, a way of expressing and affirming femininity that resonates more than ever given the committed philosophy upheld by the Creative Director of Dior women’s collections. An approach of solidarity, and a captivating dialogue between Dior and Indonesian craftswomen celebrate excellence and allow this unique heritage to radiate around the world. By passing down this priceless heritage and its fascinating transformations over time as well as through various encounters and changing lifestyles, this collection pays homage to both the formidable diversity of savoir-faire and the virtuosity of the petites mains that weave it. An inspiring encounter that reiterates Maria Grazia Chiuri’sdesire to highlight world cultures and to juxtapose and assemble words, images and prints: a spellbinding creative odyssey, from text to textile. In order to protect this unique world heritage, and in keeping with initiatives by the Indonesian government, Dior is committed to working hand-in-hand with local experts and artisans to safeguard this cultural asset and ensure that its precious techniques live on.

1. Gimana rasanya abis bikin lagu rembulan? Seketika suasana pemotretan menjadi “terlalu ringan” dengan ke-hadiran the young and restless: Devano Danendra. Simak beberapa hal menarik dari hasil inter-view kami bersama Devano berikut ini.

THE VIBE OF NEW YORK CITY

Coat, Satsuma

T

ory Burch Fall/Winter 2021 is inspired by the hustle bustle of New York City. It is both the dream and the reality of possibilities… opportunity, creativity and diversity. The collection reinterprets American luxury and sportswear, channeled through the attitude of classic New York. Timeless pieces that are grounded in the reality of how women want to dress. It starts with the idea of seasonless dressing and layers, the foundation of wardrobes women will reimagine in their own way. Crisp cotton shirts, knit turtlenecks and feminine shirtdresses; men’s suiting with softer proportions and poplin evening dresses, all of which can be styled differently for warmer weather. Accessories and jewelry add dimension to the layers: louche hobos and structured crescent bags, loafers, curved-heel boots and gold and multi-button chokers.

Fashion NEWS

Spring/ Summer 2021 Style Trends Fashion Month showcased a brave new world of digital enterprises, from Insta releases, to livestreamed shows, artful videos, titans of the industry in conversation on YouTube, and socially distanced in-person runways. That idea translated directly to the collections— where 12 trends sum up the current mood. Ease into 2021 in something pretty and pastel, it’s the moment.

1. GOOD TRENCH Distilling down to the basics is one approach to our current fashion conundrum, which comes down to a simple question: What do we want to wear right now? The innovative trenches on offer for spring may be based in the idea of a classic, but they’re hardly your typical belted fare. From dramatic lapels to interesting slits, drop waists, and bold sleeves, it seems that you can have your trench and your statement piece all at once.

2. OVERSIZED BUTTONED DOWN How passé to believe your oversized shirting is your “husband’s shirt,” your “dad’s shirt,” or “borrowed from the boys.” Let your double XL be yours and yours alone. The look is all about billowing silhouettes that take inspiration from standard poplins reimagined in bright shades of pink and orange, done up as dresses, shown extra long and extra wide, or with proportions that simply make you look twice. Pictured from top to bottom: Sacai, Michael Kors Collection, Wales Bonner, Xuly Bët, Valentino, Schiaparelli, The Row, Balenciaga, Coach, Coperni, and Vaquera.

3. Petal to the Metal How does your garden grow? The bolder, the brighter, and the more impactful seems to be the only way forward for spring. Designers certainly aren’t here for wilting daisies; instead, they’re bringing the floral motifs in sunny yellows, on neon tulip dresses, and on gala-worthy ball gowns in shades of pink so incandescent you’ll need shades to look straight at them. Pictured from top to bottom: Tom Ford, Valentino, Marni, Carolina Herrera, Duro Olowu, Kwaidan Editions, Molly Goddard, and Christopher John Rogers.

4. Coats of Many Colors While 2020 has quite literally been about isolation, the prevailing notion is that it’s about time to stand out in a crowd. What better way is there to approach that than in a brightly hued statement coat? Come spring, you’ll have your choice of stripes, patchwork, and checks. Pictured from top to bottom: Dries van Noten, Prada, Duro Olowu, Dolce & Gabbana, Chopova Lowena, Christopher Kane, Burberry, and Christian Dior.

5. Team Player We never thought we’d fall so hard for a sporting staple like the windbreaker. But wonders never cease when a concept is put in the right hands and an athletic mood is in the ethos. Offered in primary colors, blacks, and whites; in extra-long, cropped, shrunken, and oversized versions—there’s a one for everyone. Pictured from top to bottom: Burberry, Salvatore Ferragamo, Prada, Miu Miu, Koché, Heron Preston, Marine Serre, Givenchy, Molly Goddard, and Plan C.

6. Cinch It The waist has it for spring. Though belts are hardly new, this fresh iteration is never low slung. Instead, it’s all about creating shape on the body. Whether you’re all about bows or something edgier like heavy metals, you’ll have no trouble finding middle ground. Pictured from top to bottom: Chanel, Prada, JW Anderson, Fendi, Louis Vuitton, Art School, Miu Miu, and Chloe.

7. Cool Khakis Mix up all your go-to denim looks with lighter shades of khaki. The tan cotton fabric, née chinos, often reserved for high school boys and suburban dads is getting a high-fashion turn in oversized, slouchy takes paired with uber-feminine portrait tops, tailored blazers, sweater vests, and more sequins than you might expect. Pictured from top to bottom: The Row, Thakoon, Tory Burch, Simone Rocha, Ambush, Paco Rabanne, Schiaparelli, Louis Vuitton, Hermes, and Valentino.

8. Tie Dye For Let’s be honest, we’ve never been ones for do-it-yourself fashion. That’s what designers are for. So while we appreciate the sentiment of creating your own colorful tees, we prefer how the experts are translating the counterculture mainstay. From caftans to maxi dresses, sweat suits and denim, these shibori-inspired patterns hit every color of the rainbow, and are decidedly bougie. Pictured from top to bottom: Christopher Kane, Dries van Noten, Y: Project, Gabriela Hearst, Tom Ford, Collina Strada, Matty Bovan, Christian Dior, Osman Yousefzada, and The Elder Statesman.

9. The Bold Shoulder What started as a nod to the ’80s has taken on a life of its own, with the recent crop of standout shoulders becoming less about a throwback and more about coming into their own. With not-so-subtle peaks, a mutton sleeve, a cape, not-sosimple tees, and an origami moment, these big shoulders aren’t one-size-fits-all. Pictured from top to bottom: Alberta Ferretti, Loewe, Richard Malone, Patou, Maison Margiela, Comme des Garçons, Khaite, Carolina Herrera, Moschino, Yohji Yamamoto, Givenchy, Melitta Baumeister, and Balmain.

10. Nothing but Net While our actual fishing references are admittedly limited, we do know that some well-placed netting satisfies our desire for purely aesthetic pleasures. These nets are not here to keep you warm; they serve no higher purpose other than that they exist as eye candy, as newness, as that something that feels perfectly right now. Pictured from top to bottom: Dries van Noten, Burberry, Hermes, Judy Turner, Fendi, Jil Sander, Balenciaga, Lanvin, Ports 1961, Rick Owens, Noir Kei Ninomiya, and Nanushka.

11. Them Big Jeans Some have argued for sweatpants forever, and we can’t deny the appeal, but a girl can never be fully divorced from her denim. Get the best of both worlds in oversized jeans that are as louche and cool as they are comfortable. Washes run the gamut from dark blues to tattered lighter fare—just add some oversized shirting and jackets, and you have your new uniform on lock.
