something for everyone! 2014–2015 77th Season Masterworks • Beethoven’s Fifth Beyond the Score® Pops: Audra McDonald & New Year’s Eve Pops with Cirque de la Symphonie Family Concert • Yankee Doodle Pops • Vivaldi’s Four Seasons

Our 77th Season is titled Powerful Music – Something for Everyone! and we have planned concerts to delight classical music lovers, our youngest audience members and everyone in between. Our signature series – seven pairs of Masterworks concerts – opens in September with Igor Stravinsky’s colorful Joseph twentieth-century masterpiece, Giunta The Firebird. To celebrate Iowa’s beautiful autumn season, I have invited acclaimed Avery Fisher Career Grant-winner and one of classical music’s brightest stars Anne Akiko Meyers back for her third visit with the Des Moines Symphony to play Vivaldi’s famous and fiery Four Seasons. In November, we collaborate for the fifth time with the Chicago Symphony and go Beyond the Score in a media-rich presentation of Beethoven’s powerful and fateful Fifth Symphony.

My friend Jorge Mester conducts the Orchestra in February, leading our musicians in repertoire he is world-renowned for, including Debussy’s impressionistic depiction of the sea: La Mer. Finally, we close the season with Copland’s iconic Appalachian Spring in a special Memorial Day Tribute honoring those who paid the ultimate sacrifice for our great nation. New this year is an additional Pops concert! You’ve already experienced the state’s largest single-day concert event, the Des Moines Symphony’s Yankee Doodle Pops, and our New Year’s Eve Pops, which for the past several years has delighted sold-out crowds. Now, in collaboration with Des Moines Performing Arts, we’ve added a third Pops concert, this year featuring the incomparable American singer and actress Audra McDonald, whom The New York Times describes as “absolutely thrilling” and a “defining voice of our time.” We have also customized many options for our youngest friends including our annual Family Concert collaboration with Des Moines Performing Arts specially programmed for kids ages 4-10 plus their parents and grandparents; and please remember that students are always half-price for all Masterworks concerts, including season subscriptions.

And, as an encore to the hugely successful Symphony In Sculpture, we have commissioned Steve Heitzeg to compose a new work inspired by the Pappajohn Sculpture Park’s newest addition, Olafur Eliasson’s colorful Panoramic Awareness Pavilion.

On the heels of the release of her Four Seasons: The Vivaldi Album, Avery Fisher Career Grant-winner Anne Akiko Meyers joins the Orchestra in Vivaldi’s famous and fiery Four Seasons. She has been called a “master violinist” and “passionate performer” and her sound has been described as “a tone so pure that it emerges just a few times in a generation.” Experience it live as Joseph Giunta conducts Meyers and the Orchestra through the Seasons: storms rumble and roar in Summer, and glittering pizzicato notes in the highest registers depict Winter’s icy snow. The all-Italian program concludes with a different image of nature – the mighty Pines of Rome – with the sonic grandeur and orchestral force of your Des Moines Symphony raising the roof at the Civic Center! BEETHOVEN Symphony No. 5 Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony is a must-hear-itlive bucket-list piece. Composer, writer and critic E.T.A. Hoffmann wrote that the piece “… tears the listener irresistibly away into the wonderful spiritual realm of the infinite.” Experience it in our fifth collaboration with the Chicago Symphony in this special Beyond the Score presentation. The work opens with quite possibly the four most-recognized notes in music history – the fate

theme – which Beethoven organically develops throughout the entire symphony, culminating in the triumphant Presto finale. A riveting multimedia first half presents dramatic visuals on a giant screen, plus four actors depicting Beethoven, influential writers and other period characters. On the second half of the concert, you will experience the dramatic tour de force that is the complete Fifth Symphony!
