Armstrong: It takes more than skill to win BLUES • FROM B1

“So that was a real learning moment for us, that in a league of parity what separates the good teams and the teams trying (to be good). And I think it’s just the selflessness and commitment.” Chemistry, leadership, selflessness and commitment. The way the postseason played out emphasized just how important such characteristics are to team success in the NHL, in Armstrong’s mind. “A team like Vegas, you look at their team on paper, they shouldn’t be competing with some of the teams they knocked out (of the playoffs),” Armstrong said. “But ultimately they had something which other teams lacked, which was that selfless play. I know I learned a lot from it. Mike (Yeo, the Blues’ coach) and I have talked about it and I’ve talked to a couple of our players that are in town about it, too. And everyone saw the same thing.” With those thoughts in mind, fast forward to the Mike Hoffman trade. Well, actually the Mike Hoffman “trades.” The talented Ottawa winger was dealt twice in the span of three hours Tuesday, first to the San Jose Sharks, who then sent him to the Florida Panthers. The Blues have been rumored to be interested in Hoffman dating all the way back to the trade

deadline last February. On Friday, following the first round of the NHL draft, Armstrong discussed how the Blues approached the Hoffman situation in light of the controversy in Ottawa. Hoffman’s fiancée faces allegations of harassment against the wife of Senators team captain Erik Karlsson. “We were waiting for more information,” Armstrong said. “I talked to their (general) manager who gave me the opportunity to talk to the player agent. “I don’t want to get into the details. It was still cloudy enough for us to want to just let things settle, and try and gain more information. We knew we ran the risk of him going somewhere else, but we also didn’t feel that we wanted to assume something that we didn’t know — how it would look in four or five weeks.” Armstrong added: “I’m sure Mike’s a tremendous young man, but I don’t know him or his fiancée. We weren’t ready to wade into that until there was more information.” Perhaps Hoffman will thrive in Florida, leading the Panthers to bigger and better things. But keep in mind Ottawa general manager Pierre Dorian’s comments to reporters Thursday about the Hoffman situation: “Trading Mike Hoffman was something we needed to do. We talk about — our dressing room was broken. We have to have a

dressing room that wants to win together.”

SOSHNIKOV RE-SIGNS

Forward Nikita Soshnikov, a restricted free agent, has agreed to a one-year, one-way deal with the Blues for $800,000. Soshnikov, 24, was acquired Feb. 15 from Toronto for a fourthround pick in the 2019 draft. He appeared in 12 games for the Blues last season with one goal and one assist, averaging 11 minutes a game. He missed seven games, first because of a neck injury and then an upper-body

Last season, he appeared in 51 games for the Tulsa Oilers, the Blues’ ECHL affiliate, scoring four goals with 18 assists. He also played in 12 games for the San Antonio Rampage of the American Hockey League, with one goal and two assists. Selman, 24, signed with the Blues in 2016 as a college free agent out of the University of Michigan. He had three goals and seven assists in 26 games last season for Tulsa.

HUTTON OUT THE DOOR?

The Post-Dispatch reported 10 days ago that goalie Carter Hutton planned to test the freeagent market, and that according to Armstrong the Blues and Hutton were at a “different point” in terms of contract expectations. As suspected, a strong market is developing for Hutton, who had a career year last season for the Blues. Eight teams contacted Hutton’s agent Sunday, the first day teams could contact free agents from other teams, according to Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic. The first day free agents can sign with other teams is July 1. Jim Thomas @jthom1 on Twitter jthomas@post-dispatch.com
