Kane’s hat trick helps England advance Striker now leads tourney in goals scored as English record their most lopsided Cup win WORLD CUP FIRST ROUND

With two penalties and an accidental deflection, Harry Kane moved ahead of David Beckham and Cristiano Ronaldo and put England into the round of 16 at the World Cup. Kane, a striker, scored half of England’s goals Sunday in a 6-1 rout of Panama,in Nizhny Novgorod, Russia, the national team’s largest-ever margin of victory at the World Cup. “The third one is probably one of the luckiest ones of my career,” said Kane, after it came when a shot from teammate Ruben Loftus-Cheek deflected off his heel. “Sometimes you go through spells where you are scoring and sometimes it doesn’t fall for you. “Not many players get to score a hat trick in a World Cup.” Kane has scored a tournament-leading five goals, one more than Ronaldo and Romelu Lukaku. He also has 18 for England’s national team, one more than Beckham. Not since the 4-2 victory over Germany in the 1966 final has England scored as many goals at the World Cup. The ruthlessness of the display in the sweltering heat of Nizhny Novgorod showed just how far England has been transformed in the four years since an older, more experienced squad couldn’t even manage a win when it exited the World Cup in the group stage. Now England is sure of a spot in the round of 16 with a game to spare in Group G. Panama, which offered little resistance, is leaving the tournament early after being eliminated along with Tunisia. Sterner tests await for England, starting Thursday against Belgium. The teams are tied atop Group G in points, so the victor will win the group. In the event of a draw, tiebreakers could be so close that first place could come down to the fair-play record — which team accumulated fewer red and yellow cards.

England’s Harry Kane scores on a penalty kick, one of three goals he scored Sunday against Panama.

Colombia 3, Poland 0 • Four years after Radamel Falcao was supposed to lead Colombia at the World Cup, he’s doing just that. He missed the tournament in Brazil because of a knee injury and had to wait until arriving in Russia to score his first World Cup goal. It came in Colombia’s 3-0 win over Poland, in Kazan. “It’s a dream goal,” Falcao said. “I’m happy for the victory, for the team’s performance and the goal that I scored, which I’ve been waiting for for many years.” The victory kept Colombia in the running for a spot in the round of 16 and knocked Poland out of contention, the first European country to be eliminated. Falcao, Colombia’s career leading scorer with 30 goals, made sure he would stay healthy for this year’s World Cup by sitting out several matches with his Monaco club this season. So far, so good. “We always hope that he can score and hope that he can be fit as he was today, and we want to

help him,” Colombia coach Jose Pekerman said. “I think the fact that he scored was very important, not just for today but for the matches to come. “He is a symbol of the national team. He is a symbol of Colombian football.” Falcao scored with the outside of his foot in the 70th minute, after a superb pass from playmaker Juan Quintero in the back of the defense. Yerry Mina scored the first goal, in the 40th, and Juan Cuadrado tallied in the 75th. Colombia next faces Senegal, on Thursday in Samara, with a chance to win the group. Poland will play Japan in Volgograd. Japan 2, Senegal 2 • Keisuke Honda sat on the bench for 72 minutes, knowing a goal would make him the first Japanese player to score at three World Cups. Six minutes later, it was a done deal. The former AC Milan for-

ward scored in the 78th minute, knocking the ball by two defenders standing on the goal line, to give Japan a draw in Yekaterinburg, Russia. Honda, 32, also scored at the 2010 and 2014 World Cups. He has 37 international goals. “I believe I used substitutions very well in looking back,” said Japan coach Akira Nishino, who took over shortly before the tournament started. “Honda was moved from center to the wide side and he was very versatile at adapting to that position.” Sadio Mane gave Senegal the lead in the 11th minute. Japan struck back in the 34th minute when Takashi Inui scored with Japan’s first shot on goal, but Moussa Wague restored the lead with a shot high into the net in the 71st. That led to Honda’s goal. The draw keeps both teams at the top of Group H ahead of their final matches. Japan has that match with Poland and Senegal faces Colombia, in Samara.

Sweden midfielder Jimmy Durmaz says the racist abuse aimed at him over social media following the 2-1 loss to Germany has been “completely unacceptable.” Durmaz gave away the free kick that led to Toni Kroos curling in an injury-time winner in Saturday’s group game. Durmaz has since been subjected to online abuse, including threats to his family. He was born in Sweden to Assyrian parents who emigrated from Turkey. “When you threaten me, when you call me ‘Arab devil,’ ‘terrorist,’ ‘Taliban,’ then you have gone far beyond the limit,” Durmaz said in a statement. “And even worse, when you go after my family, my children, threaten them. Who does

such a thing? It is completely unacceptable. “I am Swedish and I am proud to play in the Swedish national team.” Salah upset • Mohamed Salah told Egypt team officials and teammates that he is considering retiring from international play because he is angry about being used as a political symbol while the World Cup squad was based in Chechnya, The Associated Press reported. Salah — the Muslim world’s most popular soccer player today — said he was particularly annoyed with a team banquet hosted by Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov, who used the dinner to grant Salah “honorary citizenship,” according to sources. Chechnya, a predominantly Muslim region in southern

Uruguay loses Gimenez • Uruguay defender Jose Maria Gimenez has been ruled out of the team’s final World Cup group match, Monday against Russia, because of a right thigh injury. The team didn’t say when Gimenez might return. He scored in the team’s opening match of the tourney, a 1-0 victory over Egypt. His team also beat Saudi Arabia 1-0 to secure a spot in the round of 16. The stalwart defensive play from the 23-year-old center back has been key to the team’s wins. Coach Oscar Tabarez wouldn’t reveal who will replace Gimenez. Tiebreakers • If two or more teams wind up tied on points, here’s how FIFA decides who finishes where in the group standings: 1. Best goal differential. 2. Most goals scored. 3.
