It is anticipated that the award of construction contract will be heard by County Council at their April 10, 2012 meeting. Groundbreaking is scheduled for the month of May. County staff and golf operations will continue to be housed in the renovated former Golf Course Pro Shop until construction is completed. Golf Course Improvements During the CIP Committee’s business meeting on Thursday, March 15th the Committee gave an order of preference listing for the projects. General Information Everyone is welcome to all classes. Consult with your doctor before starting a water exercise program

Benefits of Water Fitness Aquatic exercise promotes and enhances physical and mental fitness. The water’s unique properties allow the pool to provide an environment for people of all abilities. Buoyancy creates a reduced impact exercise that is easy on joints while the water’s resistance challenges the muscles. The beauty of water is the ability to offer aerobic activity, resistance training and flexibility all at the same time. Water is thicker than air, so muscles get stronger. Safety Note: All deep-water classes use flotation belts for support. Swimming skills are not necessary. Participants should be comfortable in deep water. Warm ups and cool downs are essential to transition your body to the increased demands of a fitness class. If you arrive late or leave class early please include time for an individual warm up and cool down. Students work at own level.

Adopt-A-Trail Program

Trails & Open Space

Volunteer stewardship of the Los Alamos County Trail Network is a long-standing community tradition initiated by the Los Alamos Ranch School for Boys in the early 1920s. Since 2000, official records document more than 40,000 volunteer hours devoted to trail maintenance and repair. This program is an easy way for community members to make important contributions to the continuing enhancement of the trail network.

The canyons and mesas in and around the county are linked by a 58-mile network of trails. Hikers and runners, horseback riders, mountain bikers, and other trail users delight in the variety of trails from which to choose. The trails offer a quick escape from the hectic pace in town, a way to commute to work, an easy stroll or a physical challenge, and a chance to observe wildlife or soak in the views. Pueblo and Bayo Canyons provide the largest wooded section of uninterrupted open space in our County. A popular access point is through Kinnikinnik Park behind the Aquatic Center.

What is the Adopt-a-Trail Program? It is an all-volunteer program that gives the public an opportunity to become actively involved in conservation and maintenance of the County’s unique and scenic trail system.

The western perimeter area provides access to the Santa Fe National Forest above the town site. Access can be found at the Quemazon and Mitchell Trailheads.

Who can adopt a trail? Any individual, family, neighborhood, organization, or business can adopt a trail.

Two undeveloped mesa-top open spaces, Deer-Trap Mesa and Kwage Mesa, offer outstanding vistas that take in the surrounding canyons and mountains of the Rio Grande Valley.

What are the responsibilities? 1. Attend a two-hour training session on the basics of safety, trail construction, and trail maintenance. 2. Walk the trail as frequently as possible - once a month or more is a good goal. 3. Pick up litter. 4. Report problems such as trail erosion, tree falls, damaged water bars, trail cutting, vandalism or safety concerns. 5. If you so choose, perform simple routine maintenance such as clean out water bars, obliterate detour trails, remove downed limbs or branches. 6. Fill out a short quarterly report form regarding your trail maintenance activities.

White Rock Canyon offers spectacular scenery, rugged terrain, and unparalleled opportunities for solitude and adventure.

What trails can be adopted? The Adopt-a-Trail program includes any trail on the County Trail Network, but stewards are particularly needed for: BAYO CANYON TRAIL RANCH SCHOOL TRAIL PERIMETER TRAIL LA MESA TRAIL WOODLAND TRAIL QUEMAZON TRAIL ACID CANYON TRAIL HOMESTEAD CROSSING How do I adopt a trail? Call Craig Martin at (505) 663-1776 or send an email to with the following information: Name of individual organization, or business adopting the trail Name of the trail segment you would like to adopt Contact person with name, email address, phone number

LA Mesa Trail, one of two ADA access trails, is located along the northern canyon edge of NM502. Canyon Rim Trail, the second ADA paved trail, is located on the southern canyon edge off NM502. It begins by Fire Station #1 and winds down to a parking lot across from the Entrada entrance. The trail is approximately 1.5 miles long and is a 10 foot wide ADA compliant trail.

Camping Camp May: Located near Pajarito Mountain Ski Area. Camping permits are available from Memorial Day through October 31 for trailer, RV and tent campers. Fire pits, restrooms, picnic tables and a shelter are available.

Entrance Park: Located on NM502 at the entrance to Los Alamos. Open year-round as a trailer and RV campground. Restrooms and a dump station are available. No electrical or water hook-ups. Overnight camping is by permit only within Los Alamos County. Permits may be obtained at the Aquatic Center.
