Questo kiot di legno, o custodia per icone, è arrivato a noi dopo aver subito notevoli modifiche. Tutta la superficie della teca è coperta di pitture di turgidi germogli rampicanti che formano cartocci e ovali con fiori, foglie e boccioli. L’ornamento si ispira ai disegni delle stoffe pregiate italiane del Cinquecento e del Seicento. Sul retro dell’anta gli stessi motivi sono più radi e distinti gli uni dagli alri. La rivestitura è decorata con piante e fiori incisi. Il kiot proviene dalla cappella dell’Arcangelo Michele della Cattedrale della Trasfigurazione nel monastero Solovetskiy. Un tempo serviva a custodire un’icona della Madonna di Smolensk del Cinquecento. La storia dell’icona della Madonna di Smolensk è legata alla figura del metropolita Filippo, che era stato priore al monastero di Solovetskiy.
This wooden kiot has come to us with substantial alterations. The entire surface is covered with shoots of lush creeping plants, which make up an ornament of cartouches and ovals with flowers, leaves and flower buds. The ornament draws on the patterns common for the Italian precious fabrics of the xvi–xvii centuries. On the reverse side of the volet the same motifs are reproduced in a more laconic style. The revetment is engraved with vegetative ornament. The kiot issues from the side chapel of Archangel Michael of the Cathedral of Our Saviour and Transfiguration (Spasso-Preobrazhenskii Cathedral) of the Solovetskii Monastery. It once housed a xvi-century icon of the Mother of God of Smolensk. The history of the icon relates to the life of Metropolitan Philip, who served as hegumen of the Solovetskii Monastery before ascending to the Metropolitan’s cathedra.
