High Times Penthouse—a chíc cannabis showroom that opened on March 1st, with murals and wild paintings decorating the walls. A baby apple tree and succulents breathe life into the room, while high-end cannabis products sit on display. But in order to get to the Green St. High Times Penthouse, you must ring for the elevator. A man by the name of Ruben Pardo opens the ornate elevator doors from the inside and welcomes riders into his domain. On the elevator walls are framed profiles written about Pardo by the LA Times. “You should take a picture of the article and read it on the computer,” Pardo says. “It’s too dark in here.” Pardo’s been the building’s elevator man for the last 35 years, and he’s very popular. “Do you smoke cannabis, Ruben?” I asked him as we rode up on the elevator (I mean, he does work in the Green St. High Times building.) “No,” he laughs. “I do other things for enjoyment.” A couple months after the approval of Prop. 64, High Times relocated their headquarters from New York to Los Angeles, solidifying Southern California as the nation’s cannabis capitol. And now that Green St. and High Times are under the same roof, the collaborative possibilities are endless. “We have four floors in this building, we rented one out to High Times and collaborated with them on the Penthouse, which has been great,” says Mayo. “We’re providing a service to the brands by giving them a space to show off their products. We also rented a floor to a company called Jak Prints, a really big printing company from Ohio because they want to have their work in the cannabis space. I’ve named the building ‘Silla-bong Valley,’ and Josh calls it the ‘Diamond District of Weed’
