Festival Fashion There will always be lots of direction for you to take when it comes to festival fashion, but the truth is, YOU always have the final say. However, it’s always fun to take inspiration from our favourite celebrities. One of the biggest music festivals that took place this year was Coachella and the fashion stakes were high with musicians, models, dancers and reality stars seen wearing their best accessories, kimono’s, statement sunglasses and neon prints, bringing music and fashion together. Now, it’s your turn. As we await the arrival of V Festival, Wireless, Glastonbury, T in the Park and more, it’s time to start choosing your number one statement pieces for the big day. When it comes down to it, festival fashion has no boundaries. You can stick with floral, neon and fringe, but who says you can’t treat the day like an evening out? Who’s daring enough to pair a black LBD with a bright floppy hat? Or a playsuit with chunky wedges? Let’s see what you come up with this year.

Ashley Roberts: Her Words, Her Rules. Following her debut single release, the US artist discusses her solo album, Saturday Night TV and her decision to move to the UK.

rom success with a US girl group, The Pussycat Dolls, and taking second place in the running for the UK’s Queen of the Jungle, to winning over audiences on ITV’s Dancing On Ice judging panel and accompanying Ant & Dec on Saturday Night’s Takeaway, Ashley Roberts is now launching her solo career.

“It’s such an amazing place.” With a new released single ‘Clockwork’ and an upcoming solo album due for a 2014 release, Ashley is excited to share her new album with her fans, on a project she particularly enjoyed having a creative input on. “I’m so grateful for the opportunity to get to co-write on the album,” Ashley expressed. “I miss the girls and I’m very grateful of where I came from, but I’m excited to do my own thing, be an individual and talk about my own stories.” That she has certainly done, as her new album (its name is yet to be disclosed)

10 | Ashley Roberts | L’ART

boasts a woman’s anthem, a stripped back ballad, a remix and a re-work on a Dinah Washington classic and this new collection of tracks, bar one, were recorded in the world famous Metropolis Studio right here in the UK. Having the opportunity to work in a studio that has previously been the recording home of, Rihanna, Amy Winehouse and Adele, Ashley was approached by the studio following her exit from the jungle (I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here!) and was eager to take them up on their great offer. “It’s such an amazing place. They wanted to take me on to do an album and instead of flying back and forth, I wanted to take on the opportunity,” Ashley said of her decision to move to the UK, to pursue her solo career. “I had such a big platform coming out of the jungle. I was really excited that I got the opportunity and London just felt like the place. I feel creative. The buildings and the culture are different; inspire me.” Speaking of inspiration, there’s actually a great story behind the album title. Without wanting to give too much away, Ashley spoke of the original difficulty in finding the ‘perfect’ title for her new work. L’ART | Ashley Roberts | 11

“Something wasn’t clicking,” she explained. “I went away to think of visuals that inspire. I saw a visual of this girl and it kind of came to me. I wrote down something and my A&R wrote down something. We got together and actually ended up having the same thing, which is kind of crazy. I can’t wait to announce it!” ‘Woman Up’ is set to be the next single release from the album and is described as being the female anthem of the track listing. Although the track is a personal, fun one for Ashley, all singles mean something to her in some way.

“‘All In A Day’ is definitely one I love,” Ashley expressed. ‘Wild Heart’ is a really cool one, it’s kind of got a different beat and ‘Face of Love’ is a really nice stripped down ballad. It’s not something I usually do, I just really enjoy singing it. I like them all for different reasons.” ‘All In A Day’ is actually the only single Ashley recorded over in Los Angeles prior to recording here in the UK. The Invaders had written a song she had heard and after clicking with this particular track, Ashley acted upon this connection with the lyrics when the opportunity arose. At the time the track spoke volumes to Ashley, particularly relating to the relationship she was dealing with at the time and the personal link led to

the re-worked classic. With Ashley first becoming a household name through her role in The Pussycat Dolls, we wondered whether there would be a return to her dancing routes in the future. “I love dance, it’s been the heart and soul of me and my upbringing. I wouldn’t turn it down if something came across,” she revealed. It’s possible that Ashley will move forward with her passion and share her love for dance by creating projects that will get kids involved with the arts. “Dance is something I am passionate about and it was my saving grace; something I was passionate towards.” Currently remaining present on the promotion circuit with the single ‘Clockwork’, Ashley has been seen on chat shows This Morning and Lorraine, as well as being heard on the Bauer radio groups. “I’m going to be popping up a lot,” Ashley laughed and as for her popping up on our television screens with Ant & Dec on their Saturday Night Takeaway?.. “I do love the boys and it’s such an amazing place to work. I see us working together in the future.” ‘Clockwork’ is available to purchase today!

Word On The Street Bangs is back as Jay Brown and the Youngers cast return to Channel 4.

“There’s a record launch and we’re all performing. We just had loads of jokes on set: a big club launch party scene, loads of extras, had a big party; was just mad.” It seems being called by his agent for the role of Bangs has been a great turning point for Jay in his acting career. After doing a few scenes, Jay soon secured the role and within a week and a half of originally getting the audition call, Jay was on set; a time frame he will never forget. “Within a week and a half my whole life turned around. You never know what’s around the corner.” As the series progresses, we’re promised to see a different side to Bangs, allowing us viewers to see more from his character than just ‘chasing Linkstar and keeping him away from my little sister’. This character development will not only be seen emotionally but physically, as Jay reveals he’s been hitting the gym.

Following a first series of what Jay describes as being a taster, this second series explores the main characters a lot more, with new characters With working out being a huge part of his already being brought into the mix. outside life, it came as no surprise that Jay’s hobby was written into his character’s profile. “The closeness really does show on screen,” Jay said as he commented on the family vibe on set. “I haven’t seen the scenes yet so I hope it pays “You really do see the chemistry between all off.” of the actors. It really wasn’t work, it was just fun.” So with the connected love for the gym, just how similar are Jay and Bangs? It seems his friends Despite the early 5am starts and finishes as late see more similarities between the two than he as midnight, it’s clear to see Jay loves his job and does. with a strong sense of belief in the show, great moments naturally follow. “I don’t have a tattoo on my neck for one,” Jay states, but being brought up in an environment With episodes seven and eight particularly around MC’s and DJ’s has enabled Jay to use his standing out as favourite recording moments for experiences for acting. Summer Breaks Were Made For Dance: Training Camp With Studio 25! This protective trait is also visible in Jay’s day to day life. Being protective of his friends little sisters has come through on screen.

Jay has also produced his own short film, Echo Road, which focuses on the closure of death; a topic which is sure to touch society as a whole, with grief having affected everyone at some stage in their life.

“It’s great to play a brother looking after his sibling. The whole cast really are a family. We’ve all got each others backs and are extremely supportive of each other. We all want “As an actor, I’ve got my own stories and I’ve got to make sure we’re doing the best job possible.” my own tales to tell. This was something I really believe in. On The Rise: Rough Copy Are Here To Stay We sit down with Kazeem, Sterling and Joey, as they talk ‘Street Love’, their debut album & their future plans to make a name for themselves.

“We’ve waited for this moment.” L’ART: How does it feel to have your very own debut song? Rough Copy: Amazing! It feels really good. We’ve been together for so long. We’ve waited for this moment and now it’s come and we can’t believe it’s actually here. It’s so surreal. L’ART: What made you choose Anita Baker’s ‘Sweet Love’ as the inspiration for your track ‘Street Love’? Rough Copy: Bridging the gap. A lot of people know us for Rough Copy-ing a lot

of covers, so we didn’t want to lose that fan base. We wanted to bring them on our journey. Everybody knows Anita Baker ‘Sweet Love’, and at the same time for the younger people – the X-Factor crowd who don’t really know about Anita Baker – the verses are our own, so it takes you on a new journey and you grow to love it. L’ART: What was it like filming the video for the song? Rough Copy: It was long! It was a long day of hard work and fun. L’ART: What can we expect from your debut album? Rough Copy: It’s going to be a lot of hit songs. The first album is going to be the setting stone for us. L’ART: Is there anyone in particular you would like to work with? Rough Copy: It’s so hard. From the UK we would have to get Tinie Tempah, Emeli Sande, Adele, Craig David, Damage, Gabrielle; the people who paved the way for UK music. If we’re going for American artists, we’ll be here all day!

Rough Copy have certainly been working hard since their latest appearance on the UK X-Factor. The term ‘hard work pays off’ is perfect for them, as they were signed to Sony this year. Now as they count down to the release of their debut song ‘Street Love’, they’re working harder than before.

Rough Copy: We actually have our second headlining gig at Fairfield Halls (Croydon) on the 29th of June, the same day our single comes out. We’re all over the place; Uni gigs, press events, different clubs, gigging up and down, because currently we’re on our promo tour for our single. We’re trying to get our name and brand out there. L’ART: How involved have you been with the songwriting and producing? Sterling: I always get involved with songwriting. If there are certain things that can be done better or that we can add. We all like to put our creative input in, because at the end of the day no one can write you something and you don’t feel it. It’s not going to work. I did put a couple of creative inputs into that single (‘Street Love’). You can expect features on the album and you’ll see my name on a couple of tracks. L’ART: Describe a typical day in the life of Rough Copy. Rough Copy: Car, motorway, smile, sleep, sing, dance, party and KFC. Busy days. We need more busy days. L’ART: When you’re not focusing on your music, how do you like to spend your time? Kazeem: With my son and my girlfriend. 32 | On The Rise: Rough Copy Are Here To Stay | L’ART

Sterling: In my room, in my bed all day. Or in my studio and burning the house down with bass! Joey: Sitting in and watching movies, seeing family and friends and hanging out. It’s nice to do other things. L’ART: How do your friends and family feel about where you are now? Rough Copy: They’re very proud and very excited because they’ve seen our journey from the beginning. Some didn’t like that we went back on the X-Factor, but they’re very proud. Sterling: One thing that I do love is the fact that I’m able to give back to the family and be able to help one another, especially as I’ve had that help a lot. L’ART: What are your plans for the rest of the year? Rough Copy: Predominantly we’re trying to get the single to the best place it can get. We’re working on our other songs and getting a catalogue of songs, different producers and different artists and being creative. The single is out 29th of June. Go on to Gigs and Tours now (online) and buy a ticket to come and see us for our headline gig. Make sure you get your dose of ‘Street Love’. Also, congratulations and good luck to the new contestants on the X-Factor. Enjoy yourselves.
