You may hear the phrase ‘Eid Mubārak (“Blessed Eid”) or ‘Eid Sa‘īd (“Happy Eid”) resonating throughout the city on this special day. Children in particular are quick to offer Eid greetings in anticipation of the small monetary gifts called ‘Eideyah’ which adults reciprocate with. Since generosity is one of the hallmarks of a Muslim…it’s lucky that the definition of a ‘child’ can be stretched well into your 30’s or 40’s! Make sure your pockets are full of SR50 – SR200 notes, depending upon your budget, because you’re sure to encounter some children this Eid.

BE A GOOD NEIGHBOR -Take over a plate of food/dessert to share with your neighbors – no conversation required! -Inquire about their family & extended family, especially if you’ve noticed lots of cars outside their home. -The weather: A classic and somewhat clichéd beginning to a conversation, but it’s a safe, timeless tactic that affects everyone. -The weekend: Ask about their holiday plans especially their Eid celebrations. -News & Current Events: Always of interest to political types. -Anything you share in common with them… something new about the neighborhood, state of the roads, park maintenance etc.

Although charity and good deeds are always important in Islam, they have special significance at the end of Ramadan. As the month draws to a close, Muslims are obligated to share their blessings by feeding the poor and making contributions to mosques and charities. At Eid al-Fitr, people customarily dress in new clothes, adorn their homes with lights and decorations, give treats to children, and enjoy visits with friends and family after the congregational Eid morning prayer.

So whether you’re new to the area or a veteran of the neighborhood, Eid is a great excuse to get to know your neighbors and build bridges! Fast Facts : Islamic Religious Holidays:

• Eid Al-Fitr (Festival of Fast Breaking) 1 Shawwal/September 10, 2010 •Eid Al-Adha (Festival of Hajj Sacrifice) 10 Dul Hijjah/November 16, 2010

Eid is traditionally a family-focused holiday, with the 3 days of Eid dedicated to immediate and distant relatives. But it’s also a wonderful opportunity to meet your neighbors if you don’t already know them.
