EASY STEPS TO A

BETTER RESUME Your resume is the perfect opportunity to stand out from the crowd and demonstrate that you have what they are looking for. No matter what kind of job you are looking for, these tips will help you approach, design and put the finishing touches on your resume .

THE APPROACH

IT’S NOT ABOUT YOU Don’t tell an employer what you want, and don’t tell them your life story. Tell them how you can ad value to their company. Any skills or experience you include on your resume should be relevant. If it’s not relevant, leave it off. What skills and characteristics is the employer looking for? Make a list, circle the ones you can offer, and create a resume that shows off those traits and experiences.

THEIR NEEEDS

YOUR RESUME

YOUR SKILLS

BE OUTSIDE THE BOX

Does the job call for “outside-the-box-thinking”? Simply saying you fit that description doesn’t demonstrate your ability to be creative. Use your resume as an opportunity to show how creatively you can approach challenges.

PICK YOUR TOOLS

Everyone knows Microsoft Word, and most people use it to create their resume. What if the job requires you to know Adobe Suite or PowerPoint? Then why not use one of these softwares to design your resume?

PORTFOLIOS AREN’T JUST FOR ARTISTS

If you have relevant work experience and the documentation to prove it, package it up nicely and send it along with your resume. It will demonstrate your skills in a way that a resume never can. It will also make the interview go more smoothly because you will have something to look at together.

ELEMENTS OF DESIGN

baseline

Your font sets the tone and says something about who you are. If this position requires lots of number crunching, you should probably choose a sans serif font. If it involves research and writing, an elegant serif font is probably best. Whatever the case may be, there is probably a preferable alternative to Times New Roman, which is far the most common resume font.

PRACTICE GUN CONTROL

This is a resume and not a machine gun. Take it easy with the bullet points. The human brain can only process two or three bullet points at a time. Don’t use a bulleted list to describe a job. Instead, try two or three sentence paragraphs explaining how the job developed your skills. If you want to add success stories or metrics then add a couple bullet points.

USE SPACE EFFECTIVELY

Potential employers don’t spend much time on each resume. Don’t waste space, or your potential employer’s attention on things like your street address or hobbies. Also, truly effective communicators should be able to get the point across in one page.

FINISHING TOUCHES REMOVE ALL HYPERLINKS If you don’t, it will look weird when printed

CONVERT TO A PDF FORMAT

Make sure your resume looks the same to everyone by converting it to a PDF or something like a JPG where appropriate.

BE CREATIVE

There is no opportunity to stand out if everyone has the same format. Stand out by doing something creative.

PREPARE YOUR

ELEVATOR SPEECH An elevator speech is a clear, short message or “commercial” about you. It communicates who you are, what you’re looking for and how you can benefit a company or organization. It’s typically about 30 seconds - the time it takes people to ride from the top to the bottom of a building in an elevator.

Embrace change. Hold the mindset that change provides opportunity

Watch and know the company’s bottom line to know how to add value

TELL US YOUR STORY

It’s easier to understand your professional background when it is in story form. Seeing clearly how you arrived from point A to point Z, gaining skills and expertise along the way, demonstrates to potential employers that you have carefully aimed for a particular career, strategically.

Another part of your story is in how you are connected. Having a great network of contacts helps potential employers see how serious you are about your career.

USE A PROFESSIONAL PROFILE PHOTO

The Photo you choose sends a strong message about who you are. If your professional profile photo is of you in a casual circumstance, such as you at a sporting activity, party, wedding, or with your pet, then it doesn’t come across as “professional.” And, what’s worse than having a bad photo is having no photo at all.

WHO DO YOU WANT TO BE SEEN AS?

TIP

Who do you want to be seen as: a leader, an expert, a worker bee? Make sure your headline and personal tagline accurately describes who you are, and make sure that aligns with your resume and who you actually are. If someone calls to inquire more about you, you shouldn’t describe yourself as something different than what’s on your LinkedIn profile.

THE BEST JOBS

The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator is a self-inventory personality test based on Carl Jung’s theories of personality types. The questionnaire is designed to measure how people perceive the world and make decisions. Created in the 1940s by Katherine Cook Briggs and her daughter Isabel Myers-Briggs, the MBTI is one of the most popular psychological instruments used today. It is often used in team-building exercises, recruitment, self development and career counseling. A number of approximations of the test are available online for free.
