Other new applications include Open/Close to enable or disable PIR’s or lights with a simple swipe and Online Status which allows users to view the status of all readers directly from an emerald terminal.

Another new feature in v6.7 is alarm escalation, allowing unacknowledged alarms from multiple sites to be forwarded to a supervisory operator workstation after a set time scale. New ‘Soft Anti-Passback’ functionality also sends a silent alarm to the operator workstation to notify of access cards passed back in breach of policy. This new functionality can be applied on a reader by reader basis or per cardholder for full flexibility.

Hikvision provides Hungary Telecommunication Company with specific solution tools

T

hroughout Hungary, Magyar Telekom Nyrt. is one of the most prominent telecommunications providers – something akin to AT&T in the United States. Just as AT&T Stores dot the American landscape, Magyar Telekom’s T-Pont stores are liberally spread throughout Hungary.

But, Magyar Telekom is undergoing a security progress, and appropriately, this development is beginning in the nation’s largest city and capital – Budapest.

A Unique Challenge

T-Pont stores provide a special security challenge based upon the fact that they are simultaneously consumer retail outlets, and due to the nature of the product, IT intensive facilities. As such, Magyar Telekom made the choice to divide these two aspects, security-wise.

To do so, a unique NVR was needed. Bernat Solyom, Technical Product Manager at RIEL Elektronikai Kft. – the Integrator of this project – chose Hikvision’s DS9632NI-ST Embedded NVR to achieve the goal. “There were a number of important requirements, but the DS9632NI-ST’s dual Ethernet ports allowed us to utilize two networks – one for T-Pont’s CCTV system and one for its IT needs. But importantly, aspects such as this successful dual Ethernet capability are but one extension of Hikvision’s overall quality.

This was not the only challenge the DS-9632NIST overcame. Chief among them were storage and live streaming concerns for the many cameras connected to it. Mr. Solyom noted the DS-9632NI-ST internal storage capabilities also offered cost-savings and increased efficiency. Additionally, the DS-9632NI-ST’s 32-channel IP camera input HDMI and VGA output at up-to 1920 x 1080P resolution, and digital zoom on live view and

playback capability allowed Magyar Telekom a vital service: the ability to remotely view the T-Pont stores in real-time.

Mr. Solyom explained, “This NVR allows management and security staff at Magyar Telekom’s headquarters to access the live video stream and view/ save/download all of their Hikvision-integrated T-Pont stores throughout the country. This streaming capability is critical to this particular solution and Magyar Telekom’s needs. We found this streaming performance to be excellent, but importantly, all of this can be achieved with low bandwidth with no quality loss.”

Addressing Specific Needs

As noted, due to the nature of these T-Pont stores, the challenges were multifold. To address the more conventional retail aspect, Hikvision’s DS-2CD753FE(I) 2.0 Megapixel Vandal Proof IR Dome Camera and DS-2CD853F-E 2.0 Megapixel CMOS-based Network Camera were chosen. With two different models, it should come as no surprise that both have different coverage responsibilities. Providing general overall surveillance for the stores is the DS-2CD753F-E 2.0 Megapixel Vandal Proof Dome Camera. Specifically, this dome is placed throughout the main floor, the entrances, and importantly, the cashier areas. While many retail outlets only have one cashier area, this is not the case with T-Pont stores. Instead, there are multiple cashier locations, and as such, each of them has an adjacent DS-2CD753F-E to provide coverage of these vulnerable areas.

He has initiated Reliance Security Solutions and Reliance Aerospace Technologies, two new ventures of RIL, and is a Director on the board of these companies. Q. How did Zicom reinvent itself post-Schneider disinvestment ?

One of the key decisions we took was not to be a plain vanilla commodity player. The thinking was that while we shall continue to be the leading player in the security retail space, we shall also gain an edge by providing services as well. In simple words, while we retailed our security products in a manner which made them more accessible we also pledged ourselves to our customers to provide services—something hitherto unheard of where you sell something and then care less for providing post sales service.

We wanted to differentiate from the rest, we wanted to become a game changer. We decided, we would provide holistic, end-to-end security solutions to our clients. We were aware this foray would be capex-intensive and wrought with uncertainties owing to vagaries of the economic conditions prevailing in the country. We were going to put in our own investment and there was a perceived risk element in it. We decided to take the risk plunge as we were sanguine this concept would find widespread acceptance even though it would be a slow burner. I must admit here, it has started working beautifully in our favour…

Q. …Along with your international foray ?

Yes! We wanted to expand our activities in the international markets as well. We did it remarkably well. Interestingly, we are facing a big paradox. In India, we are a big security brand.

However, internationally we are more known for our fire safety business.

In the Middle East, we have a very strong presence having executed many iconic projects in fire safety. Some of the marquee projects we have executed are JBR Phase 1, Etihad Towers, Concourse 3 Dubai Airport, Dragon Mart Car Park, Air Base hanger in Abu Dhabi etc. We have done two acquisitions in the Middle East in the last five years Unisafe Fire Protections Specialist Dubai and Phoenix International, Qatar.

Q. How did you achieve this ? How long did it take ?

As they say, Rome was not built in a day. Zicom was not built in a day either. We had pioneering ideas germinating from time to time, but the seeds of those ideas were sown way back in 1994,

when Zicom was born. Subsequently, post our sale to Schneider we had decided on the forays we were looking at. We were brimming with so many exciting ideas…

Services : One of them culminated in the launch of e-SaaS services. Under these services we have gone beyond the basics of the traditional security by offering a bundle of information like Business Intelligence, Loss Prevention with Comfort and Convenience to our customers.

The plum on the cake is: under the e- SaaS model we do local and remote managed services for our clients at a very competitive monthly service cost thru our Zicom Command and Control Centre with no capex investment from the customer. We offer all our services on RMR (Recurring Monthly Revenues) model.

Retail : Today, the brand Zicom is synonymous with electronic security system. For most home and business owners Zicom is the most preferred choice for protecting homes, their loved ones, properties and business. We also became preferred security service providers to the Banking & Financial Industry and Retail sector.

Overseas foray : With our rich experience and knowledge in the security domain it was but natural that we look beyond the shores of India.

We had already acquired businesses in the Middle East and we began consolidating them. Then comes another big opportunity in distant Brazil where we became partners with Ciao Telecom to kick-start our own business of electronic security in the Latin America.

Q. This means that Zicom is now a wellestablished Indian MNC ?

Yes, you can say that. Our current geographical spread right now includes five countries such as Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Brazil.

In India, we are present in over 400 cities and expanding to 500 cities by end 2014.

Q. What are your current assignments in Brazil ?

In Brazil, we are installing over 1,000 cameras in the city of Vila Velha for city surveillance. We are also soon going to install another 200 cameras in www.ind-safety.com

the city of Victoria. These apart, there are various other major projects there. We are also bidding for some iconic projects in that country and hope they will fructify very soon.

Q. Zicom has always spoken about introduction/induction/upgradation of new technology in its products and services.

Which is the new technology you are likely to introduce soon ?

We have recently launched our new Push Video Alarm technology called “inTouch. This camera is now the ultimate security device to monitor your home, loved ones, and business while you are away. In case of any motion it can alert the user by sending a push video clip of the incident to the mobile instantly with the Zicom Command Centre backing up for emergency managed services.

Moving further, in the next 60 days we will be launching a new video door phone called Zuno. This has been specifically developed and designed for the Indian market.

We are also launching our new Command and Control Software developed thru 20:20 imaging, UK.

Q. What is Zicom’s marketing strategy to keep its leadership position intact ?

Historically, our DNA has always been to be different and innovative. We are hungry to attain the Numero Uno position in the Indian market place and we have a well developed strategy for that…but right now, we are chary of discussing the same for obvious reason….

Q. According to you which are the factors that will impact the electronic security business both in positive and negative manners?

I am very optimistic about the present and the future. Everything around us is looking positive and the mood within the company is upbeat…

We are an insurgent brand and our aggression in the market place is something which keeps us nimble footed…

Q. The way Zicom is now extending its services along with its security solutions what are the opportunities and challenges www.ind-safety.com

you foresee for Zicom in particular, and the industry, in general ?

From being a project company we are now focusing on retail sales. It’s like moving away from large cap orders to small cap orders… from a fistful of customers to a bigger universe of customers, hence the internal challenge is managing mindsets. The external challenges are such as managing customer expectations and harnessing the growth potential the market is presently offering us—literally, on a platter !

Q. If retail is still one of your priorities, what would be your formula for success ?

The retail business is replete with complexities.

We have learned a lot from our historical journey and are still learning every day because currently the security market is on a nascent curve and all are efforts are targeted towards making it the next big ticket business for Zicom.

Q. We believe in FY 2012-13, Zicom crossed the Rs. 550 crore figures. We hear that you have set your target at doubling the revenue figure exceeding 1000 Cr in the next few years ?

We hope to achieve this target by 2016.

Q. Do you agree with the general belief that electronic safety and security business is recession proof? If so, can you explain how ?

It is inversely proportionate. In times of recession, the security business touches a high point. The reason is straight and simple: there are lesser jobs resulting in high incidence of crime; due to political and economic instability with markets behaviour going awry, inflation can take monstrous proportions leading to a downward slide which further creates disorder, lawlessness and even anarchy – to say the least. This is where security and safety of the society at large comes in to play. And this is where our role as security providers assumes more importance.

Q. Finally, how would you like Zicom to be perceived by 2020 ?

We perceive ourselves as an Indian MNC front leading the business of remotely managed services powered by Convergence.

Held through April 14–20, the fire safety week saw a plethora of events including mock drills, demonstrations, fire drills, essay/painting competition, etc. These events were organised as part of spreading awareness about fire safety among the residents of Mumbai.

Status of the security systems industry in India

• The industry today is over a billion $, with CCTV system accounting for over 70 % of the market. The industry is finally seeing great traction and currently in the inflection phase. There has been a tremendous growth in the industry compared to when we began.

More and more industries, trades and service companies are choosing protective clothing and work wear inspired by fashion, with the aim of sharpening up their brand image and brand management for the internal and external representation of their company.

see straight away from clothing or a car that plumbers, electricians or painters are working in the area. If they’re looking for a tradesman themselves, they’ll ask the neighbours how pleased they were with the work. They may even make contact directly because they can still clearly remember the name and company logo,” Eichendorf continues. More and more, the company that stands out is the one that comes across as professional and friendly.

“Service companies have to face increasingly stiff external competition and have to position themselves not just in relation to the hard facts of marketing such as pricing, but also to the softer side,” says Thomas Lange, Managing Director of German Fashion Modeverband Deutschland (Düsseldorf).

Staff wearing the company’s colours become ambassadors for the company irrespective of its size or how wellknown it is.

Staff as company ambassadors

Whether it’s kitchen fitting, plumbing and heating or even window cleaning - in the customer’s environment, the right appearance matters. However, those employed in industry, trades or the service sector also have their own interest in their outfit: anyone wearing work clothes in public, for example on their way to work or going for lunch, wants the clothing to look good and be flattering. “Even though the key feature is functionality, no one buys things any more that

don’t look stylish,” says Carla Teichmüller, Product Manager for A+A exhibitor Bierbaum-Proenen.

The work wear specialist, which has its headquarters in Cologne, has therefore been working for years on using sporty solutions in line with the zeitgeist. “Clothing has to look modern but mustn’t look unusual, so it can be used over a long period,” explains Rainer Glaesemer, clothing specialist at W.L. Gore & Associates (Putzbrunn), which has been exhibiting at A+A in Düsseldorf for many years.

Even for fashion-inspired corporate wear which provides lighter protection, which is actually what is required of protective clothing and work wear. It has to serve multiple purposes. First, there are the hard facts, i.e. the characteristics required by the market: it should be hard-wearing, long lasting, as resistant to soiling as possible and be able to be cleaned easily, without damaging its quality if it’s cleaned as industrial laundry.

“Increased comfort for the wearer is really important,” says Stephan Schwartz from A+A exhibitor Bardusch (Ettlingen). “Whenever we speak to people, it always comes back to the wearer’s need for comfort, then protection and being www.ind-safety.com

lightweight.” The cut should be modern and there should be a wide choice of colours. Customers also expect clothing to be available in all sizes and women’s sizes. The range of sizes has increased gradually over recent years, so there are far fewer problems with fitting, even though clothing tends to be cut smaller than before. Corporate fashion also has an effect internally and externally.

Employees are clothed in line with the most advanced technology and therefore feel particularly valued.

A sense of solidarity is created between employees. The company’s corporate identity is worn outwardly and will hopefully stick in the minds of potential new customers. The impression of professional skill is conveyed. These are good reasons for industry, trades and service companies to dress their staff in corporate fashion that goes beyond the statutory requirements of personal protective clothing (PPE).

“After a slump in sales during the financial crisis in 2009, companies invested more in work wear and occupational safety. 2010 and 2011 saw a real upturn in the industry,” reports Thomas Lange.

This development shows that many employers, safety officers and buyers have been convinced of the good sense and/or the necessity of protective clothing and corporate fashion.

There is also something very positive to report from the car industry. In this sector, it’s primarily the premium manufacturers who can hold their ground in spite of generally difficult market conditions, and they have recently been able to increase their operating profits . For this reason, they remain attractive

customers for corporate fashion/ image wear suppliers, as Joachim Geyer, Key Account Manager for Kübler Workwear (A+A 2013 exhibitor) observes, “Jobs haven’t been lost in the car industry, but we are seeing a shift in jobs.”

The construction sector is also growing. The Zentralverband des Deutschen Baugewerbes (German Construction Industry Association) is expecting growth of at least 2% in 2013. Impetus towards growth particularly involves the construction of new homes. For the trades, an important target user group for protective clothing suppliers, this means a stable to positive order position.

“However, the need for equipment is mainly arising in newer occupational fields, such as wind power and plant manufacturers, companies putting up pylons for electricity supply transmission lines, transport and logistics, urban and water works and in the recycling sector,” says Geyer. This generally means serving users in as focussed a way as possible. “The demand for professional clothing has increased categorically,” confirms Carla Teichmüller (from brand manufacturer Bierbaum-Proenen).

A+A Fashion Show presents the trends

At the A+A 2013 exhibition in November, as well as getting a look at exhibitor’s offerings, there will be an impressive A+A fashion show every day of the fair (Live Pavilion right next to Halls 4 + 5) with the participation of leading suppliers of corporate fashion and protective clothing: Classic blue overalls are out. Fresh colours and design, more variety and possible combinations, and ease of care are the order of the day. Gone are the two-piece outfits

of overalls and a jacket. The layering principle found in sport has arrived in the world of work. Younger users love sweatshirts, fleece jackets, hoodies and waistcoats, but softshell jackets are popular too.

Some work wear specialists also carry waterproof pilot jackets. Staff also enjoy putting an outfit together themselves. Different combinations are possible because the collections are modular. “Using our modular system, people can choose everything to match, including polo shirts and sweatshirts,” says Werner Münnich from CWS boco in Dreieich (also an A+A exhibitor). The trend towards individualisation isn’t stopping when it comes to the world of work.

Progress in ergonomics and functionality

Fabrics have become much lighter in the meantime, but can withstand almost as much as heavier materials used to. We also have the opportunity to create contemporary, stylish designs with these lighter fabrics.

Input comes less from fashion than from sport.

A lot has changed in the way clothing is cut, as the A+A 2013 exhibition will show spectacularly.

“Designers are taking their inspiration from street wear and sportswear,” says Annika Busche from Fristads Kansas. “Low waists and jeans-seat cuts are now widely used in work wear.” So that trousers cut to flatter the figure also meet their functional requirements, seams positioned further forward mean, for example, that movement is not impaired that when getting into a car or kneeling. possible. The same applies to sleeve volume and stretch folds. Hidden inserts in the jacket ensure that it doesn’t ride up over your head while you’re working and expose your back.

Other details of the cut include a longer jacket and trousers with a higher rear waistline, for users who often have to work on their knees.

Pockets on painters’ clothes are designed so that brushes and other tools can be stored safely but at the same time be easy to reach. Invisible Cordura reinforcement (a special spinning and weaving technique using polyamide fibres) and stitching ensure that pockets won’t pull off or tear under heavy stress. Reflective piping and overprints increase visibility in a stylish way.

Colour comes into play company logos as large as fashion labels

The demands of the market are also finding expression in the choice of colours available. The choice now seems to be infinite. Two-tone colour is right on trend. More shades than that would not work, particularly because company logos and emblems being used as decorative elements play a big part in image management. Like well-known fashion labels, they are increasingly large and are prominently displayed on the chest, back and upper arms.

Popular colours are royal blue and grey. Since they doesn’t show dirt as easily, dark blue and black are also enjoying great popularity.

Grey is often brightened up with red. “Certain associations and companies still want work wear in their corporate colours, but they’re not sticking to the traditional trade colours anymore,” BierbaumProenen staff observe.

corporate fashion has long been a part of the company’s culture.

However, now ever more small and middle sized companies can afford corporate fashion - whether it’s for the joiner on site, the baked goods sales team or the caretaker service,” says Thomas Lange (German Fashion). As a rule, colour is added to the clothing that is typical for the company in some way. “For example, public utility companies use this option to set themselves apart as a supplier in a highly competitive market,” according to Joachim Geyer (Kübler). The Bielefeld public utility companies dress their staff in the same blue as the company logo, and the Osnabrück public utilities dress their customer-facing employees in anthracite with red.

Service around clothing

Another trend in the world of work is the use of textile services.

According to Peter Böge, Chairman of the Industrieverband Textil Service e.V. (industry association of textile services), the textile services industry is looking ahead with confidence. No wonder, as their product range is multifaceted - it isn’t industry-specific and it doesn’t matter whether their clients are small companies or large businesses.

Alongside high-quality textiles and attendance, textile hire and textile leasing service companies offer hygiene services and quality management for example. A widespread model is a company purchasing the clothing itself and then getting a professional laundry firm to wash and care for it. This guarantees proper cleaning and hygiene. Even industrial washing is getting gentler on products. This in turn extends the life-cycle and make products more economical.

Now even the increasingly popular sweat shirts, t-shirts and polo shirts are more suitable for industrial washing.

Sustainability focus

Sustainability is also an important keyword. More and more companies are aware of their responsibilities in this area. They are developing guideline criteria and carrying out audits. A+A exhibitors like Kwintet (with its brand Fristads Kansas) and Bierbaum-Proenen are members of the FairWear Foundation.

“Customers are specifically asking for this,” says Carla Teichmüller (BP). She says they are interested in transparency and fairness for the whole production chain. The FairWear Foundation represents social standards based on openness and transparency. These include fair payment, a ban on child labour, the freedom to join a union and the right to collective representation.

CWS boco, on the other hand, is a member of the Business Social Compliance Initiative (BSCI). This is a non-profit organisation that aims to guarantee and continually improve socially responsible trade in the supply chains of European business undertakings. As a rule, work wear manufacturers’ products are tested for harmful substances and are frequently certified using Oekotex-Standard 100.

Whichever initiative companies choose to sign up to, they are trying to show they are trustworthy by following these philosophies. They are also hoping it will give them added value in international competition. This is because environmental protection and sustainability are increasingly important for customers as they look around A+A 2013. www.ind-safety.com

Water Mist Fire Suppression System is an active fire extinguishing system. It is a system that is connected to a water supply and equipped with one or more nozzles capable of delivering water mist. In other words, a water mist is a means of fire protection utilizing a very fine water spray. It is designed to extinguish fires in various hazards using a limited quantity of water, as compared to standard sprinkler systems.

Water mist systems are used where water damage may be a concern, or where water supplies are limited. It is a clean agent suitable for a range of sensitive applications.

A proper definition of Water Mist can hardly be found. However, 2 parameters are used to make a quantitative distinction between sprinkler and water mist sprays: drop size and operative pressure.

National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standard 750 defines water mist as a water spray with a droplet size of “less than 1000 microns at the maximum operation pressure of the discharge nozzle”.

The droplet size can be controlled by adjusting discharge pressure through a nozzle of a fixed orifice size.

Water mist systems can operate with the same functionality as deluge, wet pipe, dry pipe, or pre-action systems. The difference is that water mist system uses a compressed gas as an atomizing medium, which is pumped through the sprinkler pipe. Instead of compressed gas, some systems use

a high pressure pump to pressurise the water so it atomises as it exits the sprinkler nozzle. The system can be applied using local application methods or total flooding method, similar to Clean Agent Fire Protection System.

The study and description of the fundamental principles of extinguishment of liquid and solid fuel fires by water mist can be traced back to the mid – 1950’s where halons were also developed.

However, Halon 1301 and Halon 1211, the most effective chemical fire suppressants ever developed, become more popular in fire suppression system.

The history of the development of modern water mist system can be traced in many documents/papers brought out by various authors like Magnus Arvidson, Zhigang Liu and Andrew K. Kim. According to Arvidson, the very first commercial, fixed high pressure water mist system were developed in Sweden during the late 1970’s and 1980’s by people like Omar Vestli and Håkan Ungerth, Krister Giselsson and Mats Rosander.

Unfortunately, the people that pioneered the modern highpressure water mist technology had limited commercial success due to low initial returns on high investment costs. Their ideas and knowledge, however, have formed the basis for commercialisation of the systems by other companies that were ultimately more successful on the marketplace.

water droplets. When compared to sprinkler droplets, the water mist particles are many times smaller, i.e. even it can be as small as 10 microns. When these particles enter a fire plume, there is a rapid thermal exchange of heat which cools the fire and converts the water particle into a steam particle. The steam particle displaces the oxygen surrounding the fire and helps to extinguish the fire. So with cooling, local oxygen depletion and radiant heat absorption, water mist is able to extinguish fires quickly.

3. Extinguishing Mechanisms :

Ltd., Mumbai, India ( see para 8.4 on Hand Hose Line System ) of water mist systems is related to shipboard applications and dates back to the early 1990’s. According to Arvidson two factors contributed to the acceptance of water mist system (i) the ban of halons and (ii) the fire on-board the passenger ship Scandinavian Star in 1990. The ban of halons forced the International Maritime Organization (IMO) to find alternatives for the protection of machinery spaces, cargo pump rooms and other applications where halons had been used.

The fire on-board Scandinavian Star, where 158 people lost their lives, led to an improvement in fire safety regulations that included a requirement for fire sprinkler systems in accommodation and public spaces on both new and existing passenger ships. The application of water mist to fire suppression was therefore, not considered practical until the halons were phased out in 1990’s under the Montreal Protocol in 1987.

The recent studies have shown

that water mist technologies have the potential either to replace current fire protection techniques that are no longer environmentally acceptable, or to provide new answers to problems where traditional technologies have not been as effective as desired.

This article will provide the basic principles of water mist system, mechanism of extinguishment, spray characteristics, the methods of generating water mist and some factors that influence the performance of water mist.

2. The Basic Principle :

There are a number of parameters that decide whether a water mist system will provide effective fire extinguishment.

Some of these factors include the water discharge velocity, spray angle pattern, particle size and nozzle coverage area.

Conventional sprinklers and water spray systems fight fire by the process of wetting or cooling combustible surfaces with large

Water has favourable physical properties for fire suppression. Its high heat capacity and high latent heat of vaporisation can absorb a significant quantity of heat from flames and fuel. Water also expands 1700 times when it evaporates to steam, which results in dilution of surrounding oxygen and fuel vapours. With the formation of fine droplets, the effectiveness of water in fire suppression is further increased due to significant increase in the surface area of water that is available for heat absorption and evaporation.

When water is injected into a compartment not all the sprays that are formed are directly involved in fire suppression. According to Liu and Kim they are partitioned into a number of fractions as follows: • Droplets that are blown away before reaching the fire; • Droplets that penetrate the fire plume, or otherwise reach the burning surfaces under the fire plume, to inhibit pyrolysis by cooling, and the resultant steam that dilutes the available oxygen; • Droplets that impact on the walls, floors and ceilings of the compartment and cool them, if they are hot, or otherwise run-off www.ind-safety.com

to waste; • Droplets that vaporise to steam while traversing the compartment and contribute to the cooling of the fire plume, hot gases, compartment and other surfaces; • Droplets that pre-wet adjacent combustibles to prevent fire spread.

Bredech and Rasbash identified two mechanisms by which water mist extinguishes fires and they are (i) heat extraction and (ii) displacement of oxygen resulting from the evaporation of water mist in the area surrounding the fire. Recent studies, however, suggest that there are additional mechanisms such as radiant heat attenuation and kinetic effects in fire suppression using water mist.

3.1 Heat Extraction (Cooling) : The cooling mechanisms of water mist for fire suppression can be divided into cooling of the fire plume and wetting/cooling of the fuel surface.

Flame cooling by water mist is attributed primarily to the conversion of water to steam that occurs when a high percentage of small water droplets enter a fire plume and rapidly evaporate. A fire will be extinguished when the adiabatic flame temperature is reduced to the lower temperature limit, resulting in the termination of the combustible reaction of the fuelair mixture.

A fire will also be extinguished when the fuel is cooled below its fire point by removing heat from the fuel surface, or when the concentration of the vapour / air mixture above the surface of the fuel falls below the lean flammability limit due to the cooling.

Fuel wetting / cooling by water mist also reduces the pyrolysis rate of the fuel and prevents re-ignition when fuel is cooled down.

Water mist is applied to cool the fuel surface either before a deep char zone has developed, or water droplets must penetrate the char zone to reach the actual interface between the burned and unburned fuel.

3.2 Oxygen Displacement : According to Mawhinney, J.R., Oxygen displacement can occur on either a compartmental or localised scale. On a compartmental scale, the Oxygen concentration in the compartment can be substantially reduced by the rapid evaporation and expansion if fire water droplets to steam, when water mist is injected into a hot compartment and absorbs heat from the fire, hot gases and surfaces.

As the fire size increases, both the oxygen depletion due to the fire and the oxygen displacement due to the formation of more water vapour carried by high compartment temperatures are increased. This combined effect significantly reduces the oxygen concentration in the compartment and enhances the effectiveness of water mist for fire suppression. On a localised scale, when the water sprays penetrate into the fire plume and are converted to vapour, the vaporising water expands to 1700 times its liquid volume.

The impact of oxygen dilution by water mist on fire suppression is strongly dependent on the properties of the fuel. This is because, the minimum amount of free oxygen required to support combustion varies with the type of fuel.

3.3 Radiant Heat Attenuation : When water mists reaches the surface of the fuel, water can act as a thermal barrier to prevent further heating by radiation of the burning fuel surface as well as non-burning

surfaces. Also water vapour in the air above the fuel surface acts as a gray body radiator that absorbs radiant energy, and re-radiates it to the fuel surface at a reduced intensity.

Blocking radiant heat by water mist stops the fire spreading to unignited fuel surface and reduces the vaporisation or pyrolysis rate at the fuel surface.

The attenuation of radiation depends very much on drop diameter and mass density of the droplet. A given volume of water will provide a more efficient barrier against radiation if it is made up of very small droplet in a dense spray, then a dilute spray with larger droplets.

The wave length of the radiation, however, is also important in determining the radiation attenuation of water mist. The spray will absorb more radiation if the droplet diameter is close to the wavelength of the radiation.

3.4 Kinetic Effects : Experimental test carried out by Mawhinney, Jones and Thomas showed that when “underdesigned” water mist systems failed to extinguish a liquid fuel pool fire, the heat release rate of the fire was higher than that of a fire without the suppression by water mist.

Mawhinney indicated that the fire may result from kinetic effect of water mist on flames.

A momentary increase in the liquid pool fire size was also observed by Kim, M.B. and others at the beginning of the water mist discharge in the case of successful fire extinguishment. This increase in fire size, however, is attributed to the enlarged flame surface caused by the impingement of water sprays,

system in suppressing a fire is directly related to the spray characteristics produced by the nozzles.

The three parameters viz.: droplet-size distribution, flux density and spray momentum are directly determining the effectiveness of the water mist for fire suppression. The nozzle spacing as well as the ceiling height limitation for a given installation is also important.

4.1 Droplet Size : NFPA 750 has divided the droplets produced by a water mist system into three classes to distinguish between “coarser” and “finer” droplet sizes within the 1000 microns window.

The classifications are: Class 1 mist has 90% of the volume of the spray Dv0.9 within drop sizes of 200 microns or less; Class 2 mist has Dv0.9 of 400 microns or less; Class 3 mist has Dv0.9 of larger than 400 microns.

In theory, small droplets are more efficient in fire suppression than large droplets, because of their larger total surface area available for evaporation and heat –extraction.

They are more effective in radiation attenuation.

The optimum size of the droplets for fire suppression is strongly dependent on many factors, such as the properties of the combustibles, the degree of obstruction in the compartment and the size of the fire. There is no one-size distribution to fit all fire scenarios. It may be noted that any changes in the fire size, spray velocity and enclosure effects will change the optimum droplet size for fire suppression.

4.2 Flux Density : Spray flux density refers to the amount of water spray in a unit volume (lpm/m3) or applied to a unit area (lpm/m3). It is difficult to

establish the critical concentration of water droplets required to extinguish a fire. The amount of mist reaching the fire is determined by many factors. These include the spray momentum, angle, shielding of the fuel, fire size, ventilation conditions and compartment geometry.

4.3 Spray Momentum : Spray momentum refers to the spay mass, spray velocity and its direction relative to the fire plume.

It not only determines whether the water droplets can penetrate into the flames or reach the full surface, but also determines the entrainment rate of surrounding air into the fire plume.

According to Mawhinney and Back, water spray momentum is determined by many factors. These include droplet size and velocity, discharge pressure and cone angle, the spacing of nozzles, ventilation conditions and the compartment geometry.

The distance from the nozzle which water droplets must travel before falling in the air is determined by spray momentum and discharge cone angle. The falling distances are significantly reduced with the droplet size and with the increase in the surrounding temperature.

Hence, with a high ceiling, the momentum of fire water droplets will become very small before they reach the fire.

5. System Pressure :

Water Pressure is an important element in water mist system.

The size of the water mist droplet depends on the nozzle’s orifice design and pressure. Pressure allows the droplets to be projected over long distances, so that the water reaches the seat of the fire.

Operating pressure is a

parameter used to define a water mist system. According to NFPA 750, the water mist system can be grouped into three viz. (i) low pressure systems, (ii) intermediate pressure systems and (iii) high pressure systems.

5.1 Low Pressure System : In the low pressure system, the water flows through the piping at pressures similar to those of the standard sprinkler type system. In this type of systems, the pressure of water will be less than 12.5 bar (175 psi). These types of systems are used in large open room/ areas and enclosures for total flooding protection as well as local applications. The low pressure water mist systems can be ideal for aircraft hangers, fuel truck garages, car decks, where low pressure nozzles are found embedded in the floor to extinguish fire below planes and vehicles. These buried nozzles operate in conjunction with nozzles installed along the ceiling for additional protection.

5.2 Intermediate Pressure System: Intermediate systems are used inside large industrial enclosures.

The pressure used in the system range from 12.5 – 35 bar (175 psi to 500 psi). The system generates water droplets that provide good circulation and prolonged hang time throughout the protected space.

These systems also demonstrate enhanced flame-cooling and oxygendepletion characteristics.

5.3 High Pressure System : This type of system requires fewer nozzles and less water to achieve successful fire suppression results than low and intermediate pressure systems. However their piping should withstand pressures greater www.ind-safety.com

than 35 bar (500 psi). They generate substantially smaller water droplets of the nozzle than the other two systems mentioned above, enhancing the surface area and heat absorbing capacity of the droplets.

From a technical point of view, working pressure in water mist systems is usually higher than 50 bar and goes upto 100 bar.

6. System Components :

The main components of water mist systems are (i) Nozzles, (ii) Piping, (iii) Pumps, (iv) Detection System, and (v) Activation System.

6.1 Nozzles : Water mist nozzles are thermally activated, using quick-response glass bulbs that have operating temperatures rating from 135O F to 650O F. They are colour coded on their classification. The nozzles incorporate a high capacity filter to shield against impurities in the water. They are designed for use in accommodation and service spaces.

Other types of nozzles do not use glass bulbs. They are opened by valves that can be activated manually or automatically by an electrical, hydraulic, or pneumatic signal. They consist of an assortment of nozzles of different sizes, depending on the fire hazard. Nozzles have total flooding and local applications. According to NFPA 750, nozzles are special purpose devices containing one or more orifices designed to produce and deliver a water spray and can be of the automatic, non automatic or hybrid type.

6.2 Piping : Water mist system must use small diameter, stainless-steel or copper alloy piping. Filters and strainers are to be provided at each water supply connection or system riser.

6.3 Pumps : Generally centrifugal fire pumps are used in low and intermediate pressure water mist systems, however high pressure water mist systems require positive displacement pumps. These pumps will be driven by electricity, diesel or gas.

They are designed to exceed flow rate and pressure demands by a minimum of 10%. It may be noted here that the pump installations must have a metal plate that provides the rated capacity and pressure of each pump.

This system is designed to protect unheated building or areas.

6.5 Actuation Devices : It must be noted that an emergency release device activated by a single manual operation is a must for all water mist systems. This device must be accessible, and its intended purpose must be clearly recognizable.

7.4 Deluge System : The deluge system also has a detection system. When the detector is activated, it supplies water throughout the piping system. In this system, all nozzles are non automatic and of open design. They work, however, by flooding the area to be protected with copious amounts of water from all the nozzles.

6.4 Detection System : Very early (air aspirating) smoke detection system are commonly used in conjunction with water mist system. However, all detection systems used to actuate water mist system must be automatic.

7. The Types of Systems :

Various types of water mist systems such as Wet System, Dry System, Pre-action System, and the Deluge System, are in use.

7.1 Wet System : The Wet System uses automatic nozzles attached to piping that is filled with water under pressure.

In this system, water discharges immediately from thermally activated nozzles. This type of system is fast and highly effective.

7.2 Dry System : The Dry System uses thermally

7.3 Pre-action System : In the pre-action system, the piping contains air that may or may not be under pressure. This system has a supplemental detection system that, when activated, opens a valve, allowing water to flow into the piping and discharge through the open thermally activated nozzles.

This system provides an added safeguard against water accidentally being discharged into an area containing delicate and valuable commodities.

8. Applications :

Water Mist Systems are used in various applications /systems such as total flooding, local applications, zoned, hand hose line and hand held fire extinguisher.

8.1 Total Flooding Systems : Total flooding systems are designed with nozzles that discharge water mist throughout an enclosure to provide a uniform extinguishing concentration. In this system, enclosure openings are typically www.ind-safety.com

installed with automatic closing devices that activate prior to the discharge of the extinguishing agent.

8.2 Local Application System : In this system, the nozzles discharge water mist directly onto the equipment or material being protected. This type of application is ideal for outdoor operation, since it does not rely on an enclosure to contain the extinguishing agent during the course of the suppression.

8.3 Zoned System : In this system, each zone has its own detection and activation components. It can provide more efficient use of a limited water supply. They are used to protect sensitive equipment and valuables found in complex floor layouts and compartments. Applicators apply water directly onto the hazard for dependable fire suppression. A detection system that can determine the exact location of the fire as well as a piping control system capable of opening and closing valves in the water distribution piping is required.

According to R.R. Spadafora, recent successful fire test using zoned water mist system in military and commercial airline passenger cabin, cargo and lavatory compartments have earmarked this new technology as an alternative replacement for extinguishing systems.

8.4 Hand Hose Line System : The hand hoseline system consists of a fuel or electric driven high pressure engine with an integral water mist nozzle, hose reel and water tank. No. 1. This system is designed to be used manually for direct application of water mist onto the fire. The main components consist of a high pressure engine (13 HP), operating pressure (100 bar), hose reel (30 M), water tank (100 L), foam tank (20 L), high pressure pistol nozzle (solid stream, mist and foam), flood light, etc... The system gives a flow rate of 23 L/min at 100 bar. The system can deliver water mist. The system can be mounted to trolleys or pick up vans or trucks to enhance outdoor fire fighting capabilities.

8.5 Hand Held Fire Extinguishers : Hand-held Fire Extinguishers containing water mist are portable extinguishing tools that are clean and create no risk to fire fighters or occupants when used inside hospitals and health care units. They can also protect electrical rooms and telecommunication rooms.

9. Classes Of Fire :

Water Mist fire suppression systems have been extinguishing solid and liquid fuel fires of various classes such as Class A, Class B, Class C and Class K. 9.1 Class A Fires : Water mist has a wide range of applications against Class A Fires (wood, cardboard, paper, cloth, textiles, rubber and certain plastics). They have been successful in extinguishing Class A fires inside high rise office and residential buildings, using total flooding applications. Cruise ship passenger cabins, places of public assembly, hotel atriums, libraries, archives, museums, art galleries, landmark/ heritage structures and storage warehouses are just a few more examples of buildings and spaces containing these types of material.

9.2 Class B Fires : Class B Fires (liquid fuel, oil, lubricant, alcohol, ether, grease and gas) originating in boiler rooms, engine rooms, spray booths, machinery spaces, gas turbine areas, road and rail tunnels, oil and gas production facilities, petrochemical plants and material conveyors are ideally safeguarded using total flooding and local water mist system applications.

9.3 Class C Fires : Water mist is also effective in extinguishing fires involving energized electrical equipments, known as Class C Fires (Computer rooms, telecommunication centres, electronics equipment, wiring, cable tunnels, transformers, circuit boards, electrical switchgear modules, metro stations and train carriages). The shock hazard to fire fighting personnel and occupants is negligible. Additionally the “scrubbing” effect of water mist on carbon smoke particles helps to reduce soot residue damage to sensitive electrical equipment. Both total flooding and local application systems are used.

9.4 Class K Fires : Water mist local streaming application systems are also used on Class K Fires, which involve commercial cooking and food processing equipment that use vegetable oils (palm, coconut, olive, soya bean, canola, corn, sunflower, sesame and rice bran).

10. Conclusion :

A water mist system is an automatic water based fire fighting system.

It was first appeared in the 1950’s.

In spite of the good effectiveness of this technology, its popularity was initially low, probably because of the development of halons for fire suppression during the same period. However, when halons were phased out under the Montreal Protocol; water-mist system restarted to gain popularity. The recent studies have shown that Water-Mist System have the potential to replace current fire protection techniques that are no longer environmentally acceptable.

Water mist systems offer potential benefits for many specialised applications, particularly when available water supplies are limited or when the application of water must be restricted. It is more suitable than traditional sprinklers. It can be employed in every setting where an excessive water sprinkling has to be avoided.

Water-Mist System appears to be capable of successfully performing fire control and suppression in a large variety of fire scenarios. Water mist droplets have a unique smoke scrubbing quality that removes the soot from the smoke during the fire. The droplets have also been attributed with filtering out corrosive and toxic vapours generated by materials such as wood, plastics and combustible liquids. However these droplets cannot remove insoluble toxic gases, such as carbon monoxide, which is generated in abundance during interior structural fires.

New methods of mist generation are still being developed by various manufacturers.

However, in our current age of high-priced gas and limited paychecks, gas station robberies occur much more than before.

As a result, gas station owners are becoming increasingly more techno-savvy in their effort to prevent gas station robberies, and keep the employees of the gas station safe. Gas station robberies have been on the rise for the past few years, and it is time for gas station owners to take notice.

Using DDNS service & dynamic IP addresses in surveillance systems When installing a business or home surveillance system including a network-able DVR, it is important to know whether you have a static or dynamic IP address if you intend on using the network / Internet capability of the DVR. The networking functionality of the DVR allows you to make a remote connection to your DVR over the Internet so that you can control the system and view your security cameras remotely.

ost users of surveillance systems want to be able to view their cameras remotely over the Internet. In order to do this, a high speed Internet connection must be available both at the location of the surveillance system and the location where the user wants to view the cameras remotely from. If you have a cable or DSL Internet connection, your Internet service provider (ISP) may be assigning your Internet connection a static or dynamic IP address.

This article will first discuss what the difference is between the two and then how it affects installing a surveillance system with remote viewing capability.

• Static IP Address – A static IP address is used when your ISP always assigns your cable or DSL modem (your Internet connection) the same IP address every time the modem connects to the Internet service.

• Dynamic IP Address - A dynamic IP address is used then your ISP may change your IP address anytime you connect to the Internet.

When installing a business or home surveillance system including a networkable DVR, it is important to know whether you have a static or dynamic IP address if you intend on using the network / Internet capability of the DVR. The networking functionality of the DVR allows you to make a remote connection to your DVR over the Internet so that you can control the system and view your security cameras remotely.

If you have a static IP address at the location of your DVR, you can always connect to your surveillance system remotely using the same IP address. If you have a dynamic IP address, things are a little bit more complicated because you never know when your IP address is going to be changed by your ISP. In order to keep track of any changes to the dynamic IP, you will likely want to subscribe to a dynamic DNS service (DDNS) that keeps track of it for you.

When you register with a DDNS service, you can create a host name, for example something like “mydvr.ddns.org”, just like the domain names and hostnames that you use to access a website on the Internet. You then associate that host name with the IP address of your Internet service connection. One way this can be done is by using a router that supports DDNS. Most routers on the market do. Log into your router and locate the DDNS setup screen.

The location will vary by router manufacturer. Enter your DDNS account settings, including your login, password, and the host name that you registered.

Now, anytime your router detects that your IP address has changed from your ISP, the router will notify the DDNS service about the change by telling it what your new IP address is.

This allows you to always use the hostname that you registered to connect to your DVR remotely over the Internet. There is no need to remember or keep track of your IP address. www.ind-safety.com

closed-circuit television system is a step in the right direction, but a security DVR viewer device is necessary for anyone who wants to keep a record of suspicious activity.

They fit the bill for anyone who wants to gather evidence and display it later. There’s an old phrase in computer science that refers to ‘write once, read never’ technology.

This same statement applies for the security industry as well. If one has no way to look at information after it is recorded, it has essentially been sent off to the bit bucket. The bit bucket more or less refers to the waste cans that were used with paper tape based computers. This means that information that has no way of being recovered is completely useless, and we’re still stuck with that limitation in the modern day.

Everyone wants to be able to view his or her security films for obvious reasons. Just as there is more than one way to skin a cat, there is more than one way to record information in a format that is easily recovered.

Technically, one could use a regular VCR or even a specialized VCR that can make the most out of a standard VHS tape. However, VHS tapes are prone to failure and take up a lot of space. DVR technology has become more widely accepted in the last few years because it doesn’t have these limitations.

However, people should still familiarize themselves with the shortcomings of digital video recorders.

The implementation of the technology is very different. If one is sure that their digital video recorder is designed for use with CCTV cameras, then that have no reason to be afraid of any strange security leaks.

The type of data that offending DVR devices collect wouldn’t have anything to do with security any ways, so those who have repurposed technology in the past probably haven’t even made something that could successfully interface with the data collection servers in question. While it’s good to keep an eye on privacy issues, some of the rumors that are going around in the security equipment supply industry today are slightly overblown.

Nevertheless, people should always be vigilant when told that there is some type of weakness inherent in their equipment.

Networking can work in favor of surveillance specialists, however. Once people get over their fear of security on the World Wide Web, they might realize how many uses an IP camera and IP equipped digital video recorder unit has. One could theoretically capture footage from cameras that are located all over the country or even the world. Security companies that are charged with monitoring various clients could use this to ensure that an electronic eye always monitors each individual camera.

Some DVR units are designed to work with 4, 8, 16 or even 32 channels. While these are often more expensive than regular units, their price tag is far lower than having to individually purchase DVR machines for each individual camera. Those systems could also be used to monitor multiple cameras at once through a networking system.

Once again, this would be very useful for those sorts of security firms that have to monitor a large number of different cameras.

Pretend, for a moment that there were three different factories that had separate CCTV networks, and all three of them were contracted out to a single location. That single location could use a digital video recorder that was outfitted with Internet protocol networking, if each of the cameras at these factories had an IP module. As long as a solid Internet connection was always maintained, there wouldn’t be an interruption of service.

that most people have is well placed. There are good reasons to care a great deal about plugging all the holes that a system like this has. A security DVR viewer system is generally pretty foolproof, but there are chances that the network might be hacked. It is usually a pretty good idea to have some sort of Firewall installed on the network that interfaces with the rest of the equipment. Regular virus and spyware checks are necessary to ensure that the network is safe enough to continue to stream video to the recording device.

A second concern involved in using an IP equipped security DVR viewer involves the stability of the Internet connection used. Needless to say, no one could use a dialup connection to network their video cameras, but just because a system is based on broadband technology doesn’t make it stable. Continuous outages won’t do anyone any favors. Weather and other concerns can actually influence connectivity. On the other hand, some people might trust the connection that they’ve previously been working with for their business. For those that have a local area network that seems stable, it shouldn’t be too difficult to get a system like this configured.

A few basic computer skills can do away with the hard part of surveillance.

Then again, there are plenty of options with DVR software that runs on regular computers. For instance, JPEG surveillance DVR technology can take individual images and load them onto a computer server. These pictures are in a format that can be read by the majority of personal computers that are running industry standard system software.

If a website was set up to request appropriate log in credentials, it could be used to display regular security DVR viewer images. JPEG files are often used on the World Wide Web as it is.

There’s another way this can benefit businesses as well. Pretend that a store has just, unfortunately, been stolen from. If a JPEG image of the suspect came out of the video feed, it can be extracted using security DVR viewer software. This image can then be posted on the store’s regular website, or even printed and distributed. This is not to say that criminal activity should be turned into something sensational, or even encouraged.

Instead, these images can be used to try and find the perpetrator of a crime.

be able to provide some information about the individual’s identity or whereabouts.

Numerous crimes have been solved because of anonymous tips or people leaving a bit of information with the authorities. There’s nothing that states that this sort of thing can’t be part of a real grass roots movement to ensure that justice is served. The fact that this sort of system is in place might also make would-be shoplifters think twice about swiping something from a store that has prepared itself to deal with criminals. Shoplifting can quickly add up and become extremely expensive.

Just like digital video recorder systems that can be connected to the Internet, it is easy to accept a video feed from over the Internet and stream it to a personal computer. In fact, this might be even easier. There are a few special devices that are necessary to turn a computer into a DVR machine, but they aren’t anything that is too difficult to work with. If a camera already has a USB interface, it could actually connect directly into a computer. Of course, IP modules that are present on Internet security cameras will interface with computer recording software just as easily.

There’s no reason that a creative set up involving digital video recorders, IP cameras, traditional CCTV technology and computers can’t be set up. Some vendors actually make a type of video interface that can be installed into a computer motherboard to accept RF video input from coaxial cable feeds. These cards plug straight into an expansion slot, and have a female BNC jack that accepts a traditional www.ind-safety.com

feed straight out of a regular security camera.

This can be used to turn a computer into a combination DVR and security DVR viewer machine. It might save some money, depending on how much would have otherwise been spent on setting up external equipment.

There are numerous uses of this sort of technology outside of the surveillance market.

Some people who are adventurous might want to use a security DVR viewer to record some sort of social networking footage and store it before posting it. This might seem silly, but Internet video market is quickly growing. Of course, a clip of video can easily be taken out of a computer interface and posted on a store’s website to work in much the same way that the previous JPEG example did. A bit of video can be very useful when trying to identify a suspect, and might even be handed over to investigators or a news service.

Some people have used surveillance systems to monitor construction projects. This can be used to make sure that no suspicious activity occurs at the construction site, and it also provides interesting footage for those who are having a house built for them. Naturally, security DVR viewer equipment that interfaces with the World Wide Web allows people to watch this sort of thing from anywhere. For that matter, there might be some interesting applications that involve mobile devices.

Smartphones and tablets are very popular, and many people have them. If a video link is provided via the Internet, even the most basic mobile phone web browser can be turned into a security DVR viewer. Even if a business owner has to travel across the country, they can still investigate suspicious activity and keep an eye on their business. If they have the right type of equipment, they should be able to check things out from anywhere in the world that has a cellular phone network capable of supporting such devices.

Keeping tabs on a business from the palm of one’s hand is pretty impressive, but it doesn’t mean that the innovations have to end there. There are numerous interesting things that can be done when setting up security DVR viewer technology. Some television sets have picture-in-picture, and this opens up an entirely new avenue for those working with traditional setups. One could watch yesterday’s happenings while keeping an eye on the premises. People are really only limited by the creativity of their engineers.

The following is a brief description of just some the additional features/ options that are available on commercial security cameras:

Commercial security cameras can be indoor or outdoor cameras.

Outdoor cameras are basically the same as indoor types except they are protected from weather and other environmental elements by a case or enclosure. Outdoor cameras usually are rated as to their degree of protection using an International Electrical code standard called an Ingress Protection (IP) rating.

Outdoor cameras should be at least an IP66 or IP67 rating which means they are completely “dust tight” and can withstand powerful jets of water, or in the case of an IP67 rating, can even be submerged in up to one meter of water.

Cameras normally use a coaxial cable that is run from each camera to the processor to transmit the video image. If cabling is impractical or undesirable, wireless cameras are available. A wireless commercial security camera usually takes advantage of the 2.4 or 5.8 GHz radio

band technology to send its video data to a corresponding receiver.

Cameras can be purchased for special lighting conditions as well. Day/night vision cameras can produce a high quality color video image in normal lighting conditions and in settings where there is very little visible light. If you need coverage in rooms or areas of total darkness, a night vision infrared (IR) camera may be the solution. These cameras use infrared illumination from IR Light Emitting Diodes or LEDs to “light up” the target area.

The IR light is seen by the camera but is invisible to the human eye.

Additional commercial security camera options include:

• Audio recording • Pan, Tilt, and/or Zoom (PTZ) options • Networking capable via the internet • Hidden or disguised cameras A small business security system needs a processor, monitor, and recorder. Personal computers can be used for this purpose but standalone systems are also available. A typical standalone system contains the processor and DVR in the same unit much like a desktop computer.

Evaluating global PPE standards The document that underpins this legislation is the Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Directive 89/686/EEC. Since 1995, suppliers of protective equipment ‘designed to be worn or held by an individual for protection against one or more health and safety hazards’ (the Directive’s definition of PPE) have been required to follow the defined approval procedures before placing the product on the European market.

T

he European Union is one of the world’s largest safety equipment markets.

It has comprehensive legislation that covers protective items which, in turn, has led to international performance standards that are now also used in many other parts of the world.

The document that underpins this legislation is the Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Directive 89/686/ EEC. Since 1995, suppliers of protective equipment ‘designed to be worn or held by an individual for protection against one or more health and safety hazards’ (the Directive’s definition of PPE) have been required to follow the defined approval procedures before placing the product on the European market (figure 1). The final part of the procedure is the affixation of the now familiar ‘CE mark’ which is the manufacturer’s declaration that the product is compliant with all relevant European regulations..

European Council Directive 89/686/ EEC

As the scope of the PPE Directive includes such a wide range of products – from those protecting against minor hazards (such as gardening gloves) right through to those which can be life threatening (such as fall arrest harnesses) – it divides them into three categories. These are based on the risk, consequences and severity of injury likely to occur to someone not wearing adequate PPE. The procedures for demonstrating compliance, and the involvement of a Notified Body, differ for 112 | MAY 2013 | INDUSTRIAL SAFETY REVIEW

each category, also shown in figure 1. Many types of PPE fall into the middle category, which is often referred to as ‘Category 2’ or ‘intermediate design’, although the PPE Directive does not give it a name.

Figure 1 shows that for all three categories, the manufacturer (or his nominated representative) must assemble the supporting technical documentation and complete an EC Declaration of conformity.

In addition (for intermediate and complex design PPE), the manufacturer must apply to a Notified Body such as SATRA for an ‘EC type-examination’ to be carried out on the product.

This involves independent thirdparty product testing to relevant European standards or technical specifications and assessment of the technical documentation as assembled by the manufacturer. For ‘complex design’ products, manufacturers must also have an ongoing relationship with a Notified Body for independent annual production checks to ensure that compliance with the standards and Directive is maintained.

European harmonised standards

The Directive is a general piece of legislation, including health and safety requirements, which need to be taken into account for all types of PPE. However, it does not describe or detail how particular types of product need to be tested. Hence, to support the Directive, the European standards organisation CEN (Comité www.ind-safety.com

The role of Notified Bodies

Européen de Normalisation) has been mandated to develop various product safety standards. CEN has convened a number of technical committees in order to develop a series of harmonised European standards to be used in the testing and certification of PPE. For instance, box 1 shows a list of standards produced by CEN/TC162 for foot and leg protection.

European standards describe in detail how a particular type of product should be tested and what performance is required to achieve a satisfactory pass. The tests developed for the various standards are designed to assess the products against the requirements of the PPE Directive for the risks of the particular activity for which the product is intended to be used.

The European Commission reviews these standards. If they are suitable, they become officially ‘harmonised’ throughout Europe and have a ‘presumption of conformity’ for the parts of the Directive detailed in Annex ZA of each standard. The publication of the standard is also mentioned in the official journal of the EU. Hence, when starting the CE marking process, it is necessary to review Annex ZA of any harmonised standard to be used to ensure that all relevant basic health and safety requirements (BHSR) as given in Annex II of the Directive will be addressed. www.ind-safety.com

Notified Bodies such as SATRA are European-based organisations which have been appointed by Member State governments and notified to the European Commission on the basis of their ability to carry out the examinations and tests required for CE marking of PPE. They must also be independent, impartial, have a high level of professional indemnity insurance and be subject to routine surveillance at regular intervals. It is possible to identify which Notified Body has certified a product because their name, address and unique number has to be displayed on the accompanying user information.

A network of representatives from the Notified Bodies meet on a regular basis to ensure that the standards and legislation are being applied uniformly across Europe. The groups are usually referred to as ‘Vertical Groups’ (which discuss issues related to a certain product type) and ‘Horizontal Groups’ (which discuss more general issues that relate to several product groups).

Referring to figure 1, Notified Bodies are involved in two main parts of the process – the ‘EC type-examination’ and ‘Article 11A or Article 11B’.

EC type-examination

EC type-examination is a check on the design and documentation of a prototype or initial example of an item of PPE to ensure that it satisfies the BHSR of the Directive. This process is based on the claims made about the product in the user information and is achieved by: • Examining the design documentation (referred to as the technical file) to ensure that firstly, the product satisfies all the relevant BHSR of the PPE Directive and secondly, that the product is adequately described through the use of diagrams and lists giving the source of all materials INDUSTRIAL SAFETY REVIEW | MAY 2013 | 113

• Carrying out a series of tests and examinations on the products to ensure they meet the claimed performance levels and have been produced in accordance with the manufacturers’ technical file.

The testing is usually from a harmonised European standard, but if necessary the manufacturer and Notified Body can use an alternative agreed technical specification. The test reports are then added to the technical file. If EC typeexamination is successful, a certificate is issued by the Notified Body to prove conformity. For intermediate products, this is effectively the end of the Notified Body’s involvement and the certificate holder becomes responsible for ensuring that subsequent production remains the same as the model examined by the Notified Body.

Production checks

In addition to initial type-examination of the product, complex design PPE is subject to checks by a Notified Body to ensure that production versions of the PPE continue to comply with the initial sample previously approved by the EC type-examination. It should be noted, however, that the Notified Body carrying out the Article 11 assessment need not be the same as the Notified Body that carried out the original type approval.

Complex design PPE covers products which protect against risks of mortal danger or dangers that may cause serious and irreversible harm to health – for example, firefighting, high voltage, foundry and chemical protection.

The manufacturer or authorised representative can choose one of two alternative methods for the Notified Body to use when checking the conformity of ongoing production: • Article 11A (Product Monitoring): This involves the Notified Body obtaining a random sample of recently manufactured items of PPE which are then tested by methods used in the original EC typeexamination to ensure continuing compliance • Article 11B (Quality System Monitoring):

Checks are made at the manufacturing site that the quality systems used by the manufacturer are capable of enabling consistent production of the certified product. SATRA uses qualified IRCA (International Register of Certified Auditors)-registered quality management system auditors for this work.

Both Article 11A and Article 11B assessments are carried out on a regular basis while that item of PPE remains in production. It is important to remember that the EC type-examination certificate remains the property of the Notified Body and, while a Notified Body cannot prevent organisations supplying product to the market, it can withdraw the certificate if there are sufficient grounds to consider that it is being abused in some way.

To conclude, Notified Bodies such as SATRA carry out a crucial role in assessing PPE products – facilitating European trade by ensuring safety and consistency of application through harmonised European standards and the PPE Directive requirements. In turn, the CE mark provides consumers with a measure of confidence that the supplier’s products have been assessed against recognised standards or other appropriate specifications by an independent third party which has also been assessed for competence.

However, it is important to remember that with the exception of complex category products, where the Notified Body that carried out the EC type-examination has been nominated to carry out additional responsibilities to periodically assess ongoing production, a Notified Body does not see the vast majority of PPE produced after initial type-examination. It is the certificate holder’s responsibility to ensure consistent production in accordance with the initial type-examination.

It is, therefore, always important to be cautious when purchasing CE-marked PPE – not only asking to see a copy of the original EC type-examination certificate issued by the Notified Body, but to also requesting test data on current production. www.ind-safety.com

High-visibility retro-reflective materials : The best safety proposition The standards for high-visibility garments, and those for accessories, set out the minimum performance requirements for retro-reflectivity. These include retroreflectivity testing after potentially destructive pre-treatments have been applied.

To maintain an effective level of retro-reflectivity, materials must retain their performance after any treatment which is prescribed for them.

H

igh-visibility materials are used to make an object, animal or person visually stand out from the surrounding environment. SATRA’s laboratories test different types of high-visibility products and materials, particularly those that are used in personal protective equipment (PPE).

Effective high-visibility PPE works by combining different materials that produce a high level of contrast between the user of a product and the background against which they are set. The specifications for these products take account of the nature of the hazard that is posed to a person and the risk of injury that may be encountered. For example, working on a motorway entails more risk than walking on a pavement in an urban area.

Under daylight conditions, coloured fluorescent high-visibility materials are used to produce a contrast of appearance against a particular environment – fluorescent yellow, orange-red or red materials being those most commonly used. Low-light or night-time high-visibility materials are those that can be said to have retroreflective properties. A large proportion of light that is shone onto these materials is reflected back towards the origin of the light source.

The current European standard for occupational-use high-visibility PPE specifies the application of retro-reflective

materials in the form of tapes that are placed on a garment according to specific design criteria. The main requirement is that these tapes encircle the torso and limbs – the primary components of the human body.

The application of tapes to a garment in this manner is intended to make a body visible when it is viewed in different orientations and postures. Leisure-wear high-visibility PPE, which is intended for use under circumstances which are not as hazardous as those for professionaluse garments, permits retro-reflective materials to be applied in a freer manner – for example, patches and logos can be used.

The standards for high-visibility garments, and those for accessories, set out the minimum performance requirements for retro-reflectivity. These include retro-reflectivity testing after potentially destructive pre-treatments have been applied. To maintain an effective level of retro-reflectivity, materials must retain their performance after any treatment which is prescribed for them. For example, if a retro-reflective tape is claimed to be effective after ten dry cleaning cycles, then evidence that the minimum specified level of retro-reflectivity can be maintained after cleaning must be provided by testing.

achieved by different means. The most commonly used type is one that uses bead technology (figure 1). Microscopic glass beads of different diameters are distributed over the surface of a substrate layer, which is usually, but not exclusively, a textile material. These beads are stuck to the substrate by a silvered adhesive layer which forms a mirror around that part of the bead that is embedded.

The performance of the tape is determined by several factors, including bead sizes, how spherical they are, their distribution over the surface of a substrate layer and the depth to which they are embedded in the adhesive layer. The durability of a tape depends not only upon how well individual beads are held in position on the tape, but also the flexibility of the adhesive layer and the inherent strength of the substrate material. Any loss of beads will, of course, lead to a reduction in the retro-reflective performance of the tape.

Another type of retro-reflective tape often used on high-visibility PPE incorporates micro-prismatic structures. This type of material is embossed with many reflectors that are shaped liked the corners of a cube (figure 2). These may be arranged in different orientations to provide different paths of retroreflection.

Each micro-prismatic shape functions by reflecting light from the three sides of its structure. The geometry of these micro-prisms is such that light is reflected back towards its source. The collective effect of the many micro-prisms embossed on a tape provides the required level of retro-reflection.

A retro-reflector does not return light shone onto it exactly to the point of origin. Rather, it returns a cone of retro-reflective light towards the source of illumination. Retroreflected light can therefore only be seen if a viewer is within the cone of retro-reflection. For example, a car driver can see a pedestrian wearing a retro-reflective garment because the driver sits more or less behind the headlights of the vehicle. The laboratory measurement of retroreflective materials is undertaken to define the effective cone of retroreflection of a material (figure 3).

At present, the following standards are applied to PPE high-visibility products sold within Europe: • EN471:2003 + A1:2007 – High visibility warning clothing for professional use • EN1150:1999 – Visibility clothing for non-professional use • EN13356:2001 – Visibility accessories for non-professional use.

The standard for professional use high-visibility garments permits the manufacture of three classifications of garment. Each classification is based on minimum allowances for both fluorescent material and tape that can be used in making a garment.

Additionally, two performance levels of tape are permitted. In many instances, buying authorities will only purchase garments that are manufactured using the highest performing ‘level 2’ tape which provides greater visibility, particularly at a distance (see table 1).

Therefore, manufacturers should always make sure that the retroreflective material they intend to use meets their market’s demands.

Buyers of high-visibility garments may also specify that retro-reflective tapes are able to withstand specific cleaning treatments, usually appropriate to the type of contamination that their clothing may experience. For example, clothing that becomes contaminated with oil may require dry cleaning. It is, therefore, important to determine whether a retro-reflective material has the ability to withstand repeated solvent immersion. www.ind-safety.com

Chemical suits : The critical PPE The principle behind the categorisation in this standard is to provide emergency services personnel with a range of protection to suit the circumstances. For instance, people operating very close to the centre of an incident where the concentration of an agent is known to be high (or indeed where it is not known) require a very high level of protection.

he threat of terrorist attacks utilising chemical, biological or radiological agents remains at a high level. Protective suits have been available to the military for many years, but in recognition of the heightened terrorist threat, and indeed of the danger posed by an accidental release of toxic substances, there is a need to provide emergency services with suitable protective equipment in the event of an incident. Until recently, there were no specific standards covering this type of garment and therefore a new British Standard has been developed and published.

BS 8467:2006 Protective clothing – Personal protective ensembles for use against chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear (CBRN) agents covers categorisation, performance requirements and test methods relating to PPE products. There are no specific European standards covering CBRN for non-military use, and BS 8467 has been developed using existing test methods and protocol to facilitate ease of testing and the CE marking process.

Whilst military protective clothing is exempt, occupational garments for non-military applications need to comply with the Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Directive.

face and respiratory protection. Four levels of performance are recognised and these are known as categories A to D where A provides the highest level of protection and D the lowest.

The principle behind the categorisation in this standard is to provide emergency services personnel with a range of protection to suit the circumstances. For instance, people operating very close to the centre of an incident where the concentration of an agent is known to be high (or indeed where it is not known) require a very high level of protection. At the opposite extreme, emergency services operating a long way from the incident or where the risk level has already been established as low, require a lower level of protection, perhaps for wearing over a period of several hours.

Levels of protection

Category A covers the equipment required at the centre of an incident, and consists of gas-tight suits with independent air supply, protecting against CBRN agents in the form of vapours or gases. It is recognised that this type of protection might come at the expense of mobility and duration within the contaminated zone. 943-2, the standard for emergency team gas-tight suits.

Category B equipment can be worn for longer periods in situations where contact with contaminated surfaces and residual vapours may occur. Liquid-tight ensembles satisfying type 3a or type 3b emergency team PPE requirements as detailed in BS 8428 would provide the necessary protection.

Category C equipment is for use where the exposure is to low levels of known agents and where risk of skin contact is minimal. It is envisaged that such suits would be used in activities such as the rescue of casualties from a collapsed building so a high level of mechanical strength is required from the garment. Garments meeting EN 469:2005 – Protective clothing for firefighters, would meet this scenario’s requirements for physical strength, dimensional stability, surface wetting, resistance to chemical penetration, resistance to water penetration and resistance to ignition. However the thermal properties required in EN 469:2005 are not relevant.

Category D equipment would be used where only very low levels of contaminants exist, either because users are operating a long way from the centre of the incident or because users are operating a long time after the incident. The basic chemical suit could consist of a type 6 suit conforming to EN 13034:2005.

Threat from the atmosphere

Preventing inward leakage of airborne particulates is a key requirement. All categories of protection under this standard are required to meet an inward leakage performance level of 0.01 per cent or better for category A, 0.05 per cent or better for category B and 0.1 per cent or better for categories C and 118 | MAY 2013 | INDUSTRIAL SAFETY REVIEW

D. A range of test methods is described including using human subjects wearing the ensembles whilst walking on a rolling road in a test atmosphere.

Other methods involve the use of a dynamic manikin in live agent tests.

Test atmospheres for manikin type tests could be, for instance, distilled sulphur mustard HD, Sarin GB, Soman GD or V-agent. For human subject tests, an atmosphere with sodium chloride aerosols is used.

All materials used in the ensembles must also be assessed for their resistance to the permeation of distilled sulphur mustard HD, Sarin GB, Soman GD or V-agent. These tests are in addition to any permeation testing or penetration testing which the various items in the ensemble may have already undergone.

For example, EN 943-2 includes a test bank of 15 chemicals – including both liquids and gases – which all components of the ensemble must protect against.

The permeation test specified in BS 8467, however, requires a specific quantity of chemical to be applied to the test piece. For category A this concentration is 100g/m2, whilst for B, C and D it is 10g/m2. The maximum cumulative permeation over four hours should be no more than 1.25 µg/cm2.

The trend towards IP based video surveillance systems is firmly established. IMS research forecast that in 2013, global network video surveillance equipment sales will overtake analog video surveillance equipment sales. The trend is away from analog-based video systems that run over coaxialcabling systems and toward IPbased systems running over twistedpair and/or fibre-optic cabling systems. This acceleration in the transition from Analog to IP video surveillance is also true for other end points like Telephones, Access Control Systems, Sensors and Intelligent Building Management Systems. The massive amount of data that is collected, transformed, and delivered across the network requires a state-of-art network cabling solution. Power over Ethernet (PoE) is a technology for wired Ethernet LANs (local area networks) that enable the electrical current, required for the operation of ‘IP end points’, to be carried by the data cables rather than by a separate power cable. The electrical current is fed to the data cable at the power-supply end and comes out at the device end (the IP end point), in such a way that the current is kept separate from the data signal so that neither interferes with the other. The current enters the cable by means of a component called an injector. This uses two twisted pairs in a standard TIA568B CAT5/6 RJ-45 Ethernet cable connection to carry DC power to a PoE-enabled device. Pins 1-2 (pair #2 in T568B wiring) form one side of the 48 V (+) DC supply, and pins 3-6 (pair #3 in T568B) provide the 48V (-) return. These are the same two pairs used for data transmission in 10Base-T and 100BASE-TX. Both power and data are transported over only two pairs. Sometimes pins 4-5 (pair #1 in both T568A and T568B) form one side of the DC supply and pins 7-8 (pair #4 in both T568A and T568B) provide the return. These are “spare” pairs in 10BASE-T and 100BASE-TX. PoE is a safe and reliable way to transmit power to the IP end points such as phones, cameras, monitors, access points and other IP devices.

for fibre-optic cabling solutions.

Optical-fibre cable is immune to all signal noise, short circuits, and power surges. Fibre is therefore a preferred medium when a video surveillance system is being installed in a high frequency environment, such as an airport or hospital. Fibre should also be considered whenever the surveillance system runs outdoors as fibre is nonconductive, and will therefore not damage the ‘end points’ in the event of a lightning strike. Conductive coax and UTP cable could potentially transport the surge and cause damage to expensive equipment.

Fibre is also recommended in harsh environments like an oil refinery, as the probability of fibre creating a spark is zero. However, fibre cannot be used to provide power, and a separate power source would be required for cameras and equipment.

Data Centres

The movement toward the construction of new data centres in specific geographies is one of the most significant trends affecting structured cabling. There is increased focus, not just on the logical network, but on the physical network design as well. The optimization of network infrastructure is another trend that impacts structured cabling, since network connectivity of servers, storage, desktops, applications, etc., all rely on cabling.

Cloud initiatives are impacting the approach to network cabling as well. An organization may prefer to deploy the physical network infrastructure before actual usage is needed in an attempt to deliver rapid scalability. Therefore, a well thought out physical layer design that allows for a phased implementation approach is crucial.

Organizations can take advantage of these opportunities by establishing a structured cabling infrastructure that will support the business well

into the future.

Integration of I.T. Components

Integration of IT components from virtualization/convergence initiatives would require a rethinking in the cable density.

Examples : • Fibre optic cabling to all server racks and storage arrays (to handle increased density while reducing cable pathways and improving airflow) • Top-of-rack input/output convergence to simplify data centre cabling and improve flexibility • The need for high-density connectivity (e.g. special patch panels and enclosures for increased port/fibre/switch density) and high-capacity cable management (to optimize performance and protect network cabling infrastructure)

• PoE is a safe and reliable way to transmit power to the IP end points such as phones, cameras, monitors, access and other end points.

• Fibre to the desk and fibre to the home. HD video, high-quality voice and data services and remote access of applications are expected to gain momentum and this would further drive the demand for fibre-optic cabling solutions.

• There is increased focus, not just on the logical network, but on the physical network design as well.

How safe are we in the modern high rise building?

he basic definition of the high rise building is something that is taller than the maximum height which people are willing to walk up.

As per Revised National Building Code of India 2005, any building which is 15 meter or more in height is considered as the High rise building though different building code specifies differently on the definition of High rise building, like Life Safety Code 2006 defines as any building greater than 23 metres in height, NFIRS regards any building of more than 7 stories in height, NIST use NFPA definition which cites the Life Safety code, i.e. 23 metres, UK Building code intimates anything above 6 stories, 18 metres.

It is imperative to say that the taller the building is, the more dangerous it will be if not maintained properly.

For a moment if we look back to the few fire accident in the past, the London, Broadgate, 14 Storey office building fire took 4.5 hours to bring it under control. The Madrid, Windsor Tower, office building fire

took nearly 26 hours to get doused, The Chicago, 69 West Washington, office building fire took 3.5 Hours to come under control.

We can’t forget the horrifying high rise fire of Hong Kong, Garley Centre, Office building. During welding work in an elevator shaft in the 16-storey Garley Building in Hong Kong district on 21st November 1996, a fire broke out which killed 39 people and seriously injured around 80 others. More than 90 people were rescued, some of them in daring scenes in which a helicopter pilot risked his own life. aintenance and repair work was in progress in the office and business tower when highly flammable material caught fire during welding work in the basement. The fire made its way up through the elevator shafts and spread like lightning through the top three floors of the building.

The immense heat and smoke made these floors a death trap for the people working there: the windows could not be opened to let the heat and smoke out, and escape routes were filled with smoke or impassable on account of the fire.

As a result, 22 charred bodies were

subsequently found in a single office on the 15th floor.5 Hours)

The main design issues for any high rise building are as follows,

• More Number of occupants in the high rise building is one of the major issue as large number of occupants means more time to go out of the building and smaller margin of safety. Thus, if the occupant load is not planned properly it will lead to more fatalities.

• There is always a chance of increased value of exposed flammable materials in the high rise building because of the large population. Polyurethane furniture, plastics and synthetic materials contribute to large fast growing fires.

• Human behavior is another big design issue for the high rise building evacuation during the fire accident.

To make the high rise building fire safe, it is essential to install proper active fire protection system like Extinguishers, Small bore hose reels, Dry riser, Wet riser, Down comer,

Yard hydrant system, Automatic sprinkler installation, Manual fire alarm system, Automatic fire alarm system, Underground storage tank, Terrace tank, Ground level pumps and Terrace level pumps…the list may be more.

But in the same time it is also very much necessary to provide proper passive fire protection system especially in one area apart from the escape route area. That is the Service Shaft or vertical shaft.

This works as a super highway of smoke during the fire.

The Revised National Building Code of India-2005, has already specified few clauses in the Part -4 – Building and Life Safety Chapter to address this critical issue.

To control the fire in the certain floor or area, it is absolutely a necessary to close the floor opening or shaft opening at floor level with proper systems which are tested by independent testing bodies like UL/ FM and which is tested as per the proper testing standard.
