PROJECT UPDATES Winter 2015
Specialists can now dictate on MediTech in Princeton
t will be much easier for specialists to provide quality care for Princeton patients. Interior Health has agreed to allow specialists to dictate on MediTech for Princeton outreach clinics starting this November. This decision follows two years of requests from multiple specialists, who had difficulty using their office transcription services remotely, which in turn impeded outreach efforts. This new model means that specialist outreach consult notes will be available in the patient hospital health records across the region. When patients require emergency
care, access to these consults will help minimize unnecessary tests, transfers and interventions, resulting in better coordinated care for patients with complex health issues. “It got to the point that I was no longer prepared to go to Princeton,” says orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Tim Bell. “I know that our services are needed out there, but it was just too difficult to chart. I understand that this is a very big change for IH, and I’m glad Dr. Tim Bell, orthopedic surgeon they saw the merits of making outreach clinics work for specialists.” Steering Committee and Collaborative Drs. Murali Venkataraman and Mike Services Committee were instrumental Purdon, working with the Shared Care in bringing a resolution to this issue.
Poster child: South Okanagan Similkameen Shared Care projects on the road South Okanagan Similkameen Shared Care projects are being showcased at events across Canada Our region is increasingly recognized as a leader in healthcare innovation. Strong working relationships have developed among family physicians, specialists, Interior Health and other partners in the community. This relationship building has enabled our committees to co-design effective solutions to local issues, resulting in positive practice change. These changes have made a real difference to patient care and the experience of physicians, Interior Health clinicians and patients. Monro, along with Shared Care Project Lead, Lisa Needoba, were asked to share their experience at the Family Medicine Forum in Toronto this November. Three Shared Care projects were also selected for one-hour rapid fire presentations on Feb. 24, 2016 at the Doctors of BC and Ministry of Health’s Joint Collaborative Committee’s Showcase, in conjunction with the Quality South Okanagan Similkameen
Forum. These presentations include: the AECOPD Pathway and COPD Care Model, Princeton Access to Specialist Care, and Child and Youth Mental Health and Substance Use. Physicians interested in attending the Joint Collaborative Committee Showcase, or the Quality Forum can contact: Tracy St. Claire: 778 476 5694 or (email@example.com) for more information.
CME Conflict Two CMEs were inadvertently scheduled for November 19th. The Shared Care team regrets any inconvenience to Dr. McIntyre or other impacted physicians. It was not intentional. This situation points to the benefits of a central calendar for physician events. Ideas for how this could be done are welcome.
