Why Hello There Elephants! Fall Rally is right around the corner! Can you believe it? All the money we raised for PTP is going to be

02

celebrated at one of the most spirited days in Key Club history. I hope you are all going to be there to share that experience with us.

03

Some of you may be asking, “What is PTP? Well the answer is this: PTP stands for Pediatric Trauma

04

Program. We raise funds to donate to PTP so that they can fund pediatric hospitals as well as give funding to protect children. Pediatric Trauma is the number one cause of death and injury in children under the

05

age of 14. And together, we can help save lives. Together, WE can make a difference!

07

I hope you have been participating in our fundraisers and buying spirit gear as well as division shirts because it all goes back to the children!

09

Think how many lives you could save with just one event. With 2. And even more? The possibilities are endless.

10

With that being said, seniors I hope you are surviving the fall. Make sure to

11

get those college apps in before it’s too late! And Juniors, I hope you have been studying for the SAT. Make sure you are all enjoying your high school life as well!

13

Make sure to keep your balance and find what makes you happy.

13

Until next time Elephants!

member of the month

ben guo Ben Guo, a junior at Rowland High School, constantly brings a smile to many faces in the division. His consistent attendance is admirable; Ben is always reliable to be constantly active in his community. Additionally, Ben’s spirit is unforgettable. He always has a sense of happiness and energy that lights up everyone else in the room as well as make that event a memorable one. Unlike many others who are often not as devoted as he is, Ben makes sure he is always doing hard work at volunteer events and that the community he serves is benefitting from it. Ben Guo is someone to watch out for, Division 35 East!

club of the month

covina Covina has recently shown immense dedication and diligence as a club all together. Alec Phong, the president of Covina Key Club, is always interested in ways to better his club as well as bringing Covina to great heights. In the past month, Covina has volunteered and shown active attendance throughout not only club events, but also division events as well. Despite the many hardships the club undergoes, Alec and his officer board manage to keep smiling through and to persevere to better Covina Key Club.

officer of the month

eden lee Eden Lee, a junior from Walnut High School, always dedicates all of her time into Key Club. She is always on top of every task given to her and still manages to show up to every event possible, managing her time and balancing her priorities. Eden is someone I personally look up to as well, as her personal dedication and passion in Key Club is why I got so involved in the first place. As a treasurer of Walnut Key Cub, she is often the underdog of many tasks and is always open to helping anyone with any task they need. Eden was undoubtedly deserving of September Officer of the Month.

editor

Hello, elephants! Fall Rally is coming up very, very soon! I hope you’ve been learning the cheers very well at our pre-rallies, because this year, I know we can win the spirit stick again. Not only that, but seniors, I hope the fall is treating you well with college applications and the likes. This is a tough time of year, but I know you can persevere and get the results you want! End your final year of high school with a bang by doing your absolute best. Also, I hope all of you have bought your division shirts by now. If not, please contact your club president or LTG, because having this shirt at Fall Rally not only establishes that our division is a whole team, but also shows your spirit for service. And with that note, see you soon, elephants!

past events poster painting peyrin kao, diamond bar This past month, I was able to attend a poster painting event with my fellow Diamond Bar High School Key Club bers. The event was organized at a local park, with members bringing paintbrushes, rolls of poster paper, colored pencils, and various other art materials to paint the posters with. That day, there were two events we had to advertise with our posters. The first was the upcoming Club Rush, a schoolwide event where all clubs on campus would advertise their club and encourage students to join. For this, we made a poster to hang on the Key Club table, as well as some smaller signs to hold up. The second event we were making posters for was the first Informational Meeting that would be held a few weeks after Club Rush. This has traditionally been Diamond Bar’s largest Key Club meeting of the year, with hundreds of hopeful members gathering in the multi-purpose room to learn about what Key Club is and how they can participate in it. These posters were hung up on stairways throughout the school so that students would know where and when this meeting was taking place. Because this event takes at the beginning of the school year, it is a great bonding experience for old and new Key Clubbers alike. At the event, I heard many Key Clubbers introducing themselves to others and discussing what they did over the summer. My job within the poster painting was to trace and fill in the words “Key Club Informational Meeting” in thick, readable letters. Overall, the event was a great way to start off a new school year. I look forward to a productive year with my fellow Key Clubbers!

lA County Fair It was 4 pm. We were all gathered around the Miller Arts Sheets Center to wait for the project leader for our jobs. The fair was swarmed with a cornucopia of joyful people playing games and eating great food. However, we were here to volunteer. We were split into two groups; one group worked in the art center while the other went to work in the children’s center. I was in the group to handle the children’s center. A member, my secretary, and I put our green work vests on our chests and got to work. As the day moved on, my secretary eventually went to work in the lego section. The enthusiastic member and I went to work in the medieval section, decorated with plastic swords and fake armor. Endless amounts of kids came in nonstop, grabbing the plastic swords and fighting one another with it. We were told to supervise the arena, clean the arena grounds, and protect kids from hurting each other. We were doing this and then suddenly, the arena was closed for a knight show. Two adults dressed as medieval knights came to the arena and chose kids to be knight apprentices. Kids were suddenly pumped up to be chosen by these two knights. We watched as these kids were chosen and came in the arena with their excited faces. They were taught the mannerisms of a knight and taught to swordfight. Minutes later, the knights closed the knight show and the knight arena was open for the kids again. We suddenly were back to work, watching the arena again and picking up messes on the arena floor. A few hours later, the population of kids withered down and suddenly our shifts were over. We took our green vests off and signed out of our shifts. We then strolled around the fair, exploring the night sky as the fair went on.

schabarum beautification

brian truong, rowland This past month, Rowland Key Club had an amazing opportunity to work with Glen A. Wilson Kiwin’s in a joint effort to beautify the nearby Schabarum Regional Park. We started off the morning getting down and dirty by mixing large vats of paint and cleaning off worn down picnic benches. Members then proceeded to scrape off clumps of dirt/chipped paint from the surface of the benches and lay down large trash bags as tarps. Following all this preparation, we were finally able to paint the shabby benches in the Shady Glenn section of the park. There was such an overwhelming amount of members in attendance that we quickly finished the job and had to find something else to do! Park rangers helped by directing us to a nearby area that needed mulch to be spread and its leaves raked. We split our large group into two and began spreading mulch and raking up leaves throughout the area. After a few hours of working, members had completed all the jobs and were satisfied with a job well done. The park looked great! This was a great event for members to meet and interact with one another, all while working to serve the community. The attendance for one of our first events was exceptional, and we can’t wait to work with the Wilson Kiwin’s again!

menchies fundraiser

With temperatures soaring in the hundreds, South Hills Key Club decided to have a fundraiser at Menchie’s to raise money for PTP, which also allowed students to relax and enjoy frozen yogurt. On Friday, October 2, students were able to grab a treat after the long week, donating 20% of their Menchie’s purchase to Key Club. Prior to Friday, we publicized the event by handing out flyers and posting it onto social media. Students were also informed of the fundraiser through the weekly Friday meetings, which have recently been successful with the help of utilizing the projection screen. Key Clubbers learned what PTP is and how they were able to help. With the help of all of the participating students, we raised $48, which is almost the highest amount we have ever raised! Helping to serve the community by fundraising for babies and children, while being able to enjoy refreshing deserts is what we are all about, and in the future, we hope to engage in other activities like this one.

als walk

Last year, a craze swept over the internet. Which one am Italking about? The ALS Ice Water Bucket Challenge,

of course. I’m sure most of us at least saw a friend do it. By now, many of us have probably forgotten about ALS.

But Bonita Key Club has not, and on Sunday, October 11th, 2015, several members from our club

volunteered in the Walk to Defeat ALS, hosted at the University of La Verne, just a ten minute walk away from our school. The walk was a light two miles around the University campus and city streets.

Nevertheless, the participants were numerous and the entire event raised a lot of money. At the volunteer

section, there were a variety of other organizations, from various schools’ Interact clubs, to college volunteers, to individual volunteers. There were people that helped set up, run the walk, and clean up. Our school was assigned the task of cheering on the participants, along with several others. To that end, we designed posters to encourage them on their walk. We came up with several designs, and I think that the participants were impressed.

During the run, we helped direct the participants through the walk while giving them encouragement. I

think that the participants were happy to know that so many people appreciated what they were doing. By the end of the event, all of us were tired, yet satisfied with a good day of service.

eagle project

On Saturday, it was momentous occasion for myself as it was the day of my eagle project that I had been planning for months to ensure it would be viable. The project itself involved the landscape renovation of an area of land that had been vacant for a couple of years at the Walnut United Methodist Church. Volunteers from BSA and KEY Club contributed significantly and helped me in the planting of over 130 plants, installing the irrigation system and also in clearing the land itself. The project was one that took over 8 hours of hard work with over 30 volunteers in the process. In addition, workers were well fed with tacos and Chinese food platters in order to thank them for their time and work. The project was one that allowed me to grow as a leader as I was not allowed to work upon the project. Instead I had to direct volunteers and delegate jobs to volunteers. Ultimately the project provided me with this leadership experience and a sense of gratitude at the amount of people who gave their time and effort to help me.
