Focusing in on Wreck Week in the British Virgin Islands The world is changing so fast and our oceans are following quickly behind. With reefs disappearing at the blink of an eye, the British Virgin Islands have stepped up to help create new reefs by scuttling old ships to create new man made reefs to allow new life and to supply previous marine life with new habitats. This issue will be dedicated to those around the BVI who went on a mission to give back to our oceans. I hope you make a visit to this awesome area and dive the wrecks of the BVI! Above: The World Famous Baths Left: Looking east towards open Atlantic BVI’s quit island life conjures up secluded beaches and turquoise waters. These shots from Virgin Gorda’s east side are just that, secluded and rich with vibrant greenery. Virgin Gorda is a MUST visit Island.

Virgin Gorda is the third-largest (after Tortola and Anegada) and second most populous of the British Virgin Islands (BVI). Located at approximately 18 degrees, 48 minutes North, and 64 degrees, 30 minutes West, it covers an area of about 8 square miles (21 km²). Christopher Columbus is said to have named the island "The Fat Virgin", because the island's profile on the horizon looks like a fat woman lying on her side. The main town is Spanish Town on the southwestern part of the island. An unusual geologic formation known as "The Baths" located on the southern end of the island makes Virgin Gorda one of the BVI's major tourist destinations. At The Baths, the beach shows evidence of the island's volcanic origins, as huge granite boulders lie in piles on the beach, forming scenic grottoes that are open to the sea. North of the Baths is the Virgin Gorda Yacht Harbor, formerly owned Little Dix Bay. The most notable ruin on Virgin Gorda is the old Copper Mine. THE BITTER END YACHT CLUB During our one week of touring the BVI’s we were invited to a different location almost every day. Day 4 was an overnight at the Bitter End Resort. Here we were treated like gods, the staff was first class, the food was 5 star and the rooms made it feel like you were lost in some jungle retreat, where the villas were built into the jungled hills that overlooked the gorgeous reefs of the North Sound. One night was not enough, its one of those places where you sigh with relaxation as soon as you step into these very cosy rooms. Bitter End Yacht Club is the Caribbean's premiere luxury water sports resort, hosting family fun vacations, romantic getaways, and idyllic escapes for all. Located on the island of Virgin Gorda in the British Virgin Islands , Bitter End is uniquely situated along a mile of shorefront on the protected waters of the North Sound. The barefoot elegance that characterizes this island outpost is why Bitter End is regularly hailed as one of the top full service resorts in the world. Check out Dive Zero TV for the footage of the resorts rooms, beaches, and more

After we all had a chance to unpack and shower after a few excellent dives, we all met at the Clubhouse steak and seafood grill for dinner. The Clubhouse Steak and Seafood Grille is Bitter End's landmark restaurant, featuring generous buffets and table service for breakfast, lunch and dinner as well as cocktail service on the terrace all day and evening. For over 30 years, it's been a favorite rendezvous for visiting boaters and famished resort guests alike. Our dinner consisted of a full 6 courses and a ton of cocktails. The food was exquisite, done to perfection and laid on the plate like it was a Van Gogh painting. Legendary throughout the Caribbean for their– elegantly casual open air dining, homemade soups, freshly caught fish, homemade pizzas, breads, and pastries, Bitter End has three distinctive dining venues.

VIDEO PRO TIP Airline travel with camera housing

When traveling with your camera, always leave a note explaining the contents of your imaging travel case. The equipment in this industry can look pretty funny on an x-ray. A clear explanation can go a long way. If you are using a hard travel case filled with foam, print out labels, and stick them under each item with a bit of superglue. This will make it obvious when you write 'underwater batteries' next to those large cylinders with wires hanging out. The nice guys behind the scenes won't be getting worried. There are horror stories of airline security officers prying open underwater camera cases with flat-head screwdrivers. How do you think your seal will take that? We are aware of ongoing settlements with the airlines due to improper handling of imaging equipment. This note should be duplicated in the language of the country you are traveling to. This can make the handling of your luggage go smoothly. Write it up once, modify and print it out for each trip. Be sure to be thorough, this can also be used back at home as an inventory of your case. Take a digital picture of your items, and leave that at home with the inventory list, just in case something should happen. Here is a suggestion for a start: Dearest Inspector, This is an underwater camera housing. It is made from machined aircraft aluminum. It is used for taking underwater photos. Please treat it with care. You will find the following items in this case:

Cathy Church Point Of Interest

Does your photo encourage your viewer to look immediately at your main point of interest?

When a person looks at a photo, their eyes are first drawn to five aspects: 1. the brightest, 2. most colorful, 3. most contrasty, 4. sharpest areas and 5. if the subject has eyes, it is drawn to the Eyes. A great photo is often one where most or all of these aspects converge at the main point of interest. A distracting photo is one where these areas conflict and there is not a clear majority found at the main point of interest. For example, if the blurry foreground is also the most brightly lit by your strobe you don't know if the bright area is the main point of interest. Your eye is drawn to the bright part but you quickly find that the attraction was a false lead--it is blurry. You now have to search the darker areas for what you assume should be the main point of interest. Or, is the more colorful red sponge background more important than your black nudibranch. And so on. Look at your photos and ask yourself for each one--where are the eyes, and the bright, colorful, sharp, contrasty areas. Do they lead you to what you feel should be the main point of interest? If there is no bright, colorful, sharp, contrasty areas or eyes, is there some other feature or pattern that makes up for that? It is hard for a photo to be great without some or all of these aspects.

Give a vote for each part of the subject that has one of these aspects. If each aspect is in a DIFFERENT part of the subject, it creates too much confusion. If the main part of the image gets three votes or more, it has a better chance of being a good photograph. There are many other elements to a great photo, but, disregarding the rarity of the subject, tying these areas together will give you a starting point on evaluating a good photo and to help you improve the next one you take.

Above: Getting the briefing for our upcoming dive of the wreck of the Checkuzen. Right: getting the sails up for full sail. As we went full sail, we were served a lunch made for kings, and talked about some of the great dives we all had in the past. To be sitting at a table with great photographers such as Mauricio Handler (National Geographic) John Binton (Diver) and Barry Guimbellot (Dive Training) just to mention a few, put me in a place that left me in awe, these guys were and still are some of my heres! After diving the Checkuzen, we set sail for a quite bay off of Virgin Gorda. Here we dropped anchor, prepared for a 5 course meal exquisitely prepared by Chef Shasha Muirhead (daughter of Duncan and Anny), then prepared for our night dive where I buddied up with Mr. Binton. That dive we saw huge amounts of Stingray and large Tarpon. Dive Zero TV Guide #9` • www.divezero.tv • www.divezero.com • 250 859 0570

DIVI NG W IT H T H E C UAN L AW After a relaxing night dive, we indulged in some drinks and dance, during which the death of Michael Jackson was announced. Jasmin Jaerisch of Tauchen Magazine from Germany loaded up her Ipod to the Cuans music center and we paid tribute by dancing and doing shooters from a water ski! (showed left, Jasmin left me on right) What a great night, one I will never forget as long as I live. After the party we set to our very cozy cabins, and slept to the slight rocking motion of the Cuan Laws rhythm of the ocean. We awoke for breakfast and set sail back to Tortola where our next adventure would begin at the Moorings. Make sure to visit Dive Zero TV to get the full deal and see what a great ship the Cuan Law really is!

ROB LYSAK HODGES CREEK MARINA Sitting marina-side on the island's East End, this hotel puts you in the middle of the nautical action. If you're heading out on a chartered sailboat or if you especially enjoy the marine scene, this is definitely the place for you. Rooms are carpeted and have tiny balconies, but brightly colored spreads and curtains give them a tropical feel. There's a small pool and the CalaMaya Restaurant in the complex. Sail Caribbean Divers are on sight and made a very easy walk to the dive boat ROB LYSAK Dive Zero TV Guide #9` • www.divezero.tv • www.divezero.com • 250 859 0570

Dive Zero’s The Dive Villages Photo Contest has rapidly become on of the hottest, and most popular photo contests on Facebook! This month, we partnered up with H2O Photo Pros for Julys photo contests theme of “Natural Light” I found it to be one of the toughest to judge. None the less Azim Musthag pulled it out of the bag with 33 votes to win H2O’s sweet as camera bag...congrats! The photo on the right is his winning photo. After viewing the guide, I would recommend you do go check out H20’s website at www.h2ophotopros.com Augusts theme will be a fun one! We are going to try to take our skills from under the water to topside, and have the theme as “beached”. This theme is just what it sounds, could be a ol wrecked boat, or maybe a sexy model doing her thing, just as long as it somewhat sticks to the theme...it will pass! Time for a lil fun, release some pressure and let loose! As a gesture to all photographers that have been submitting there photos and won, or placed 2nd or 3rd...Next month I will be doing a special edition video, with all top placing photos to music, and running it on Dive Zero TV! Massive publicity to all who have placed, a time to get your image...and your name out there. Director of Operations Luke Boychuk

Rob started off filming snowboarding and extreme sports in the snowy hills of the southern Albertan Rockies at Castle Mountain Ski Resort. Since then, he has added onto his extreme sports filming list with freestyle motocrossing and producing a skateboard video, which sold in 5 different continents across the world. He has now brought his experience of filming and editing for the past 20 years, over to scuba diving. The sport of scuba diving should be thanking Rob for his creativity and new angles that he has brought to the sport. Robs also a very accomplished underwater photographer as well.

Growing up as a sponsored skateboarder, after high school, Luke decided to change his life completely 180 degrees around. He decided to become a scuba instructor. After completing the course, he decided that he would take up underwater filming instead. He came up with the idea of Dive Zero in late 2005, and has worked on it almost everyday since. The whole idea was to bring to scuba diving, what skateboarding, snowboarding and every other extreme sport has - a lifestyle. When Luke is not working on Dive Zero, scuba diving, traveling, and getting through everyday scenarios that life brings, he still manages to find time to skateboard for his sponsors.
