We are delighted to have you with us this evening in celebration of this special milestone in the history of our Center and the surrounding Jewish community.

As of 2-12-13

In 1913, our community came together with a shared vision that resulted in a Jewish Community Center to help provide the educational, cultural, recreational and social programs and services not otherwise available. Now, 100 years later, the JCCGW continues to create a welcoming and inclusive environment that connects our community. This event is the culmination of a lot of energy and hard work put forth by our dedicated Centennial Gala Committee. We especially want to thank our dynamic Gala Co-chairs Renee and Gilly Arie, Lisie and Michael Gottdenker, and Susan and Brad Stillman and their passionate committee members; our distinguished Host Committee; and our wonderful JCCGW staff. We could never have put on an event of this size and scope without their tireless efforts and tremendous outreach. We wish to congratulate Marcy and Neil Cohen, recipients of the 2013 Benjamin Ourisman Memorial Award for Civic Achievement. We are most grateful for their longstanding passion, commitment and support of our JCCGW and the Jewish community. Thank you for joining us in celebration of our first 100 years as we move forward into our next 100 years! With sincere gratitude,

Scott Cohen Michael Feinstein President, Board of Directors Chief Executive Officer

A MESSAGE FROM THE 2013 CENTENNIAL GALA CHAIRS

Dear Friends,

Welcome to the JCC of Greater Washington’s Centennial Gala. This event was literally 100 years in the making, and we are honored to serve as co-chairs for this special evening. The funds we raise here tonight will go to support all of the vital programs and services that strengthen our community as a whole, such as the senior nutrition program and the Camp JCC Inclusion Program for children with special needs. Working together on this event has been a true labor of love and passion. We sincerely thank all of those people who have helped make this day a reality, including our dedicated host committee and the always incredible JCCGW staff. We also want to thank our devoted past presidents for leading us during the past 100 years. Individually, we are one drop. Together, we are an ocean. We also want to congratulate Marcy and Neil Cohen on being honored with the 2013 Benjamin Ourisman Memorial Award for Civic Achievement. Their commitment and dedication to the community and the Center is unparalleled. This is a tremendous celebration of all that is possible when we work together as a community. Thank you for being here with us tonight to support the JCCGW and celebrate community! Sincerely,

Renee and Gilly Arie

JCCGW HISTORY

On a sweltering afternoon in August 1911, a group of young men in their late teens gathered at a home on Eighth Street, NW to organize a club. They hoped to bring together young Jewish men, particularly those who came from all parts of the country to accept employment with the Federal Government.

At that time, Washington’s Jewish life centered around the synagogue and there was little philanthropic, recreational or civic activity detached from the synagogues. At that first meeting in August 1911, after several hours of serious discussion devoted to whether the clubs’ function was to be social, recreational, or cultural, it was unanimously decided that the club include all these activities. The name chosen was the Young Men’s Hebrew Association (YMHA). The YMHA was incorporated in early 1913 and at that same time a group of young women organized an association of their own and called it the Young Women’s Hebrew Association. They joined the YMHA in conducting community-wide events for both men and women. The YMHA relocated several times during these early years in order to accommodate the growth and popularity of the club, and also to house all of the social and recreational activities offered. To raise funds for the expanding number of activities run by the club, they held many social and athletic functions from week to week. The YMHA was also very active in the first drive to raise funds for Jewish overseas relief in World War I. Also during World War I, the then YMHA and YWHA created the first Servicemen’s Club in the United States devoted to the welfare of tens of thousands of men in uniform—irrespective of faith—from all over the world. During WWII, the Jewish Community Center once again broadened its programs for servicemen, welcoming more than one million service men and women from all nations and of all faiths and creeds,

without charge. The Center’s policy was, “Your uniform is your admission to all activities and facilities.” After several more moves and further rapid expansion of the YM/WHA, a special meeting was called in the spring of 1921 where a group of national and local Jewish leaders gave unanimous approval to the building of a Jewish Community Center in Washington, DC. After two years of preparatory work, followed by a strenuous and successful fundraising campaign, the cornerstone for the new building was laid on Sunday, May 3, 1925. It was an historic occasion attended by President Calvin Coolidge and distinguished members of the Jewish community. On February 22, 1926, the Jewish Community Center was opened to the general public on Sixteenth Street, NW. The Sixteenth Street facility served as the Jewish Community Center of Greater Washington for more than 40 years. With the growth of the suburban Jewish community and the need to expand services, a new development plan emerged. The Center, under the leadership of President Charles E. Smith, combined with the Hebrew Home and the Jewish Social Service Agency to build a new complex on Montrose Road in Montgomery County, Maryland. Millions of dollars were raised and ground breaking began on this new complex in the late 1960s. Finally, in 1969 the Jewish Community Center of Greater Washington opened the doors to its Rockville home where it has remained ever since. Today, as in the past, the JCC of Greater Washington is a welcoming and inclusive place where individuals of all ages and backgrounds gather to enhance their social, physical, intellectual and spiritual well-being, serving tens of thousands of people every year. Whether we are providing hot nutritious meals to at-risk seniors, giving children with special needs the support they need to fully participate alongside their typical peers at Camp JCC, or bringing the community together to celebrate special events, the JCC of Greater Washington continues to play a vital role in our community.

Portions of this history were summarized from “The Record – Publication of the Jewish Historical Society of Greater Washington” March, 1968. 8

A MESSAGE FROM GOVERNOR MARTIN O’MALLEY

Dear Friends: Welcome to the Jewish Community Center of Greater Washington’s 100th Birthday Celebration, and congratulations to Marcy and Neil Cohen, recipients of the Benjamin Ourisman Memorial Award for Civic Achievement. Marcy and Neil have graciously dedicated their time serving their community through JCCGW and volunteering with other local groups. From children’s needs to education, health, and wellness causes, tonight’s awardees exemplify the JCCGW’s goal of fostering a caring, welcoming community for all in the greater Washington area. The O’Malley-Brown Administration is committed to promoting service. With the launch of the multi-state “Day to Serve” last September, we hope to inspire more and more Marylanders to volunteer in their communities. When we join behind causes greater than ourselves, we can overcome insurmountable odds. This celebration is a testament not only to your dedication towards advancing the common good, but to your pursuit for a better future. On behalf of all Marylanders, congratulations to tonight’s honorees. Best wishes for a memorable celebration.

Montgomery County has been privileged to share in some of your exemplary work for the community, including your endowment of the JCCGW’s Interfaith Outreach Committee. Your enrichment of the local business community as well as the many leadership roles you have taken up are just a few examples of your many contributions. Our world is a better place because of your devotion to tikkun olam -- repairing the world. Again, congratulations on your achievement. I have no doubt you will continue to be a blessing to our community.

S TATE OF M ARYLAND O FFICE OF THE A TTORNEY G ENERAL April 24, 2013 Dear Friends: It is my distinct pleasure to be able to celebrate with you this evening for the JCCGW’s 100th Birthday Gala. The celebration is all the more special to me because tonight two longstanding friends are being honored with the prestigious Benjamin Ourisman Memorial Award for Civic Achievement. Marcy and Neil Cohen truly are pillars of our community. As long as I have known them, they have been involved in a wide range of philanthropic activities, frequently in leadership roles. From her years on the early childhood committee to her term as JCCGW President, Marcy always has given herself fully to the community, as has Neil – endowing the work of the JCCGW Interfaith Outreach Committee. It truly is an honor to celebrate this much deserved recognition of their civic achievements. Mazel tov to JCCGW on this centennial celebration and to Marcy and Neil Cohen – two extraordinary people I am so very blessed to call friends! Sincerely,
