HONOURING MANDELA: Grade 7 pupils of the Interna tional School of the Helderberg (ISH) Dan iel van Dyk, Carla Bothma and Amber Webb stack coins on a poster of former president Nelson Mandela. The project is in support of the annual Mandela Day celebrations, as well as the former state man’s 95th birhday. The 4X5 m poster was designed by ISH teachers Endra Uys and Sandra de Robeck and took the schools’ 150 pupils about three hours to complete. The funds that were raised by the pupils will be do nated to the child sexual abuse support centre, Patch’s “Small Change Project”. Amandalea Jones of Patch says the ISH has always supported them loyally over the years. PHOTO: DELIAH

BRINKHUIS

Suster oor suiker geslaan

Bail for three assault accused

Three men will appear in the Strand Magistrate’s Court on Friday 19 July on a charge of assault with the intent to do grievous bodily harm. Renaldo Marthinus, André Swarts and Edward van der Merwe are facing these charges. Marthinus testified that he is unemployed, not married and has no children. He also has no previous convictions and no pending cases against him. In Swarts’ testimony he said that he is also unemployed, unmarried and has one child. He was also previously convicted on a charge of being in possession of dagga. Magistrate Karen Scheepers granted the men bail of R1 000 each and instructed Swarts to stay at the residence of Marthinus.

Victoria Park residents fight back In recent months the residential area of Victoria Park in Somerset West has fallen prey to a number of house break-ins and theft. These criminal activities range from clothing disappearing from washing lines and cars being broken into to houses being burgled. According to Constable Suzan Jantjies, Somerset West police spokesperson, an analysis by their criminal intelligence office confirms the occurrence of more than 10 reported breakins and theft from houses in the area over the last six months. The analysis also revealed that most cases occurred in the morning and during the course of the day when most people were at work. “Criminals target homes which are easily accessible; they look for opportunities where curtains or blinds are left

open, a window or the garage is left open, and where houses are not securely locked. Otherwise, windows, doors and burglar bars are forced open to gain entry to the properties,” said Jantjies. Items likely to get stolen are small items such as cameras, computer equipment, laptops, jewellery and house hold appliances. In an attempt to stop break-ins and theft, a neighbourhood watch was recently established by residents of the third phase of Victoria Park. Ritma Grizane, who resides in Folkestone Street, recognised the need for good relations among neighbours, who often serve as watchdogs. “I’ve noticed that with a number of cases where a house or car was broken into that the affected parties did not know their neighbours. Together with her sister-in-law, and

with help from the Community Police Forum (CPF), the neighbourhood watch was initiated. At the first meeting held on 24 May, 17 homes were represented. Each member of the neighbourhood watch patrols the area during the day, when they get the opportunity to do so. Grizane also took it upon herself to create a Victoria Park neighbourhood watch blog (www.victoriaparksomersetwest.blogspot.com) where residents are updated on issues of interest to the community and where they can find more information on the neighbourhood watch. “With residents building relationships with their neighbours and the neighbourhood watch in action, one definitely feels more comfortable and safer in the area,” explained Grizane, who keeps a watchful eye on the area during her daily jogs or walks.

DEADLY WEAPON: On Thursday 11 July, officers at the Strand Police reacted to information received about an illegal firearm at a house in Liberty Street. A search warrant was obtained and officers searched the house, finding a shotgun and ammunition, which they confiscated. The firearm, which is suspected of having been used in a shooting incident in the same street on 22 June, during which a man (30) was fatally wounded, was re ported stolen at the Gordon’s Bay Police office. Two men, 43 and 20 years old, were arrested and appeared in the Strand Magistrate’s Court this past Mon day. Pictured (from left) are Sergeant Os wald Adams and Constables Faizel Sep tember, Eugene Cloete and Reagan Truter with the confiscated items.

) The golden rule of the road in the Western Cape. Keep right and pass left. I wonder what will happen if you put these morons on Gauteng Roads for one day?

Accidents on our roads on the increase During recent weeks the DistrictMail featured several photographs and stories of bad traffic accidents. We received a number of calls from readers asking why we feature horrific traffic accidents so prominently on our front pages. The reasons are to inform our readers of what is happening around them and to point out what may occur when drivers disobey the rules of the road and drive recklessly. More and more motorists take to the roads every year and there are just not enough traffic officials around to enforce the laws. It is also astonishing to see how few motorists actually obey all the rules of the road. The latest trends in road anarchy is not to indicate when you are about to turn and not to stop or even slow down at stop streets. Other more common traffic violations which are seen in the Helderberg on a daily basis, include cellphone usage while driving, going through red robots, turning in front of oncoming cars, drinking while driving, double parking in busy streets and not using seat belts (drivers, passengers and especially children). There are also many vehicles on the road that are clearly not roadworthy and should not be on the roads at all. Unless these issues are not addressed effectively and certainly, if the number of traffic officials in our area is not increased, these accidents will continue to occur, causing suffering and perhaps death to those involved.

) After some recent issues to my car, they were promptly sorted out by Kelfords and Ford Customer Care. Well done Neville and Samantha from Kelfords. Dylan Knott ) Happy customer! Thank you Johan Baard from Selfords Strand for excellent after-sales service. I bought a second-hand Toyota Hilux double cab and your service exceeded my expectations. Nothing was too much trouble for you. Raymond Berman

Why can’t prepaid be changed to municipal electricity? We are two people living in a house in the Strand. Our electricity usage is so minimal that we occasionally have candles on and con ourselves that it’s romantic. Everything is switched off at the wall – no stand-by lights glowing like cats eyes in the night, geyser is switched off all day, our oven is not used, no dishwasher, no pool pump, heaters, tumble dryers or lights on outside. We live on the minimal amount, which is not pleasant. Yet, now we are paying R900 per month for 626 units. Two months ago we were paying R800 per month for 786 units and even then, we managed to just limp into the next month before our prepaid purchase box slammed over into 0.00. We had our metre box checked and found it to be faulty, so now

we are supposed to get a refund but it doesn’t change the fact that we are paying a small fortune for very little unit and we are not going to make it to the end of July. We spoke to the City of Cape Town and were told we are on normal domestic tariff. Those on Lifeline Tariff receive some free units – subsidised by us of course. What is normal about staggering from one dark room to another at night because you want to save on electricity? Or watching TV in the dark or with candles or unable to roast that chicken on a Sunday? Never enjoying a hot bath again because it’s cheaper to shower or going to sleep with your house in darkness to advertise to the local burglars – Hey, nobody’s home. For R900 per month, one would expect some kind of comfort? Then

‘Trek Netting’ articles - a job well done Regarding the “Trek Netting” articles, I would like to thank the DistrictMail for a job well done. I am only one of the “small fish in the sea” and one of the thousands of anglers in South Africa, whose concern it is to also preserve and protect our fish species and coastal fishing spots.

Hopefully one day before it is not to late, the people will realise that you can not “rape” the sea for its resources, without causing permanent damage. Thanks again for your medium through which we can learn.

CPF Chairman laid to rest On Saturday 6 July Johnny Brown’s funeral was held at the All Saints’ Church. Police members paid him the ultimate tribute, forming a guard of honour and march past, accompanying him on his last voyage, surrounded by the officers in blue uniform that he loved so much. There was not a dry eye in the packed church as Captain Shereen Jones sang a moving hymn to the family, before police officers in full uniform and white gloves carried the casket out of the church.

It was a fitting farewell to a man who was passionate about policing, and spent nearly 20 years of his life volunteering alongside them. The community is the poorer for his passing, and we are thankful for the gift that he gave us, bringing residents and the police closer together, building neighbourhood watches, and making our town a safer place. Go well Johnny, you have fought the good fight and deserve the rest.

we discover that some friends, who use their oven for two hours a night, have their home linked to ADT, outside lights blaring that NASA would pick up on it, have three TV’s glowing around the house for hours and never switch of a light when they leave their room. They read their electrical metre and phone it in every month and have about 700+ units for about 700 odd rand? When we ask the electricity department how we can get rid of the prepaid box and go back to being linked to the municipality, we are told “Sorry! It can’t be done,” even though it was linked before? Who is making money here? Who else out there believes something stinks?

Police rewarded for service Members of the Somerset West police station were recently rewarded for loyal service to the organisation. The officers honoured were those who had served for 10 and 20 years. A parade was held on 12 July by station commander Col Mary Ann Williams and smiles and laughter filled the station as the recipients shared their sto-

ries of commitment, dedication and hard work. Col Williams congratulated all the members and reminded them that wearing the blue uniform is a calling and that they should wear it with pride. A special scripture reading and prayer was done by Jaco Coetzee and his team from the Shofar Church in Somerset West. The group also spoilt the officers with muffins and coffee.

Erasmus Laerskool in Kalbaskraal naby Malmesbury begin.

Vernon Barnard Band

How deep is your love for the Bee Gees’ music? The Vernon Barnard Band presents a tribute show to the iconic Bee Gees on Saturday 27 July at the Golden Valley Casino Winners Bar in Worcester. The Bee Gees, comprising of brothers Barry, Robin and Maurice Gibb, enjoyed two distinct periods of success, namely as a pop act in the late 1960s and early 1970s and again in the late 1970s as prominent performers in the disco-music era. The group’s distinct sound came

from its three-part vocal harmonies with Robin’s vibrato prominent in their earlier hits and Barry’s falsetto later on. Since the release of their first album, the Bee Gees sold more than 200 million records, and only Elvis Presley, The Beatles, Garth Brooks and Paul McCartney have outsold them. As songwriters they were also unsurpassed. Who can ever forget such memorable songs like New York Mining Disaster 1941, Massachusetts, I’ve Gotta Get a Message To You, I Started

Algemeen General

18 Julie, 2013

Jhovanne Julies’ two children, Taylor (3) and Montel (9).

Fund running low for Julies’ children Sunday 21 July marks the first anniversary of the death of Jhovanne Julies, the Helderberg Crime Watch patrol officer who died in the line of duty. Julies, father of two, a son and a dedicated security officer, was answering a call from a Neighbourhood Watcher in Lourensford Road in the early hours of that morning. He gave his all to his job and he paid for it with his life when he was fatally stabbed. His young life was cut short and he left not only his devastated elderly parents, but also his two young children who were both dependent on him,” said Sandy Webster from the Somerset West Neighbourhood

Watch (SWNHW). Shortly after Jhovanne’s death, Somerset West residents, especially members of the SWNHW, responded generously when asked for donations to help the family. A small group of concerned people started a fund for his children, Taylor (3) and Montel (9). They have since last year been greatly able to help these children, one of whom has special needs. The money is being used for their education and associated costs. According to Webster, the donations received last year amounted to R24 704, and were deposited in a special bank account for the children. The account is jointly controlled by Peter Brand and Hugh Roe

from the Helderberg Crime Watch (HCW) and by Jenny Findlay, Sandy Webster and Rob Harding on behalf of the SWNHW. “The donations have been put to good use over this past year, but the fund is running low and an appeal is made to the public for their help. “It is now one year since Jhuvonne’s death and any donations would be greatly appreciated, to continue providing some measure of support to Taylor and Montel,” said Webster To make a donation, or for more information or banking details, phone the HCW office on 021 852 3118 or send Jenny an email to ibfin@mweb.co.za or to Sandy at sandynhw@gmail.com.

Beautiful grey/white cat and her kit ten need a loving home.

These cats and dogs need loving forever homes PetPals, a non-profit organisation, which rescues animals in need and finds them suitable homes, have two cats and two puppies that urgently need homes. One of the cats is a young beautiful greyand-white cat and the other is her remaining tabby female kitten of eight weeks old. Both are in need of a loving forever home. The mother is gentle and very affectionate and both cats have been treated for worms and have been inoculated. The mother cat will be sterilised this week. It would be preferable if these two cats could be rehomed together. The puppies in need of homes are cross breed male pups and both are available for adoption. These boys are about 12 weeks old. The one has wire-haired blood in his veins, and the

other one has short smooth hair. They will probably grow into small-to-medium size dogs. The pups are healthy, loving and very affectionate. They have been treated for fleas, and they have been de-wormed and inoculated. They must be sterilised when old enough, and that can be done through PetPals at welfare rates. PetPals has an adoption form that needs to be completed before adoption (see www.petpals.org.za to obtain the form) and adoption fees of R150 per cat and R250 per puppy are applicable to contribute towards vet expenses. Please contact Yolanda for more information on 021 854 6317 / 083 411 0738 or info@petpals.org.za .

Ter opsomming: Die rand kan verder verswak as enige iets in Suid-Afrika skeefloop.

JJ Nel, new Rotary president for SW

BIRTHDAYS

The Somerset West Rotary Club recently held an elegant induction dinner at Henri’s in Main Road, Somerset West. Rotarian Jean Jacques Nel was inducted and presented to fellow Rotarians as the new president for 2013/2014 on Saturday 22 June. His journey with Rotary International started in 2011 and soon grew into a passion. Nel, who is also known as “JJ”, aims to build and strengthen the club by promoting its involvement in projects within the community and surrounding areas as president. With his wife as the secretary for 2013–2014, the club is very proud to say that they have a unique team. Both being the youngest in the club, this husband and wife team will surely bring something different and hopefully exciting to the table.

Seen here is JJ Nel with his wife, Lie zie.

Sponsored sweeper vehicle for cycling club After cyclists from the Helderberg Wannabees Cycling Club were injured in a hit-and-run accident on the R304 recently, a cycling shop at Somerset Mall decided to do something about the situation. Ivan Ruthven-Bruijns from Cycle Lab Winelands said they decided to help the Wannabees Club by getting a sponsored sweeper vehicle for the club. “The idea behind the vehicle was to get the bakkie to follow cyclists during big club rides and races to create a safer cycling environment in the Helderberg for road cyclists. “I approached Marius Claasen of Rola Toyota in the Strand, because I knew that owner Marius and his wife Comine were keen cyclists. “Once I told Marius that cyclists from the Wannabees Club had been injured after a hit-and-run on the Stellenbosch road and that the club was in need of a sweeper vehicle to make cycling safer for road cyclists, he agreed to sponsor a bakkie for the club,” Ruthven-Bruijns said. He explained that the vehicle would fol-

low cyclists with a trained first-aider on board as well as a bicyle mechanic, who could offer assistance to cyclists in need. He said the vehicle would follow them on routes such as Baden Powell Drive, Clarence Drive and the R304 to Stellenbosch. Ivan added that the Cycle Lab would also be holding various workshops in an attempt to get motorists and cyclists to respect each other. He said included in these workshops would be talks requesting cyclists not to cycle abreast, and not to cycle with earphones, not to ride alone and to obey the rules of the road. Other workshops envisaged for the future would be on safety, bicycle mechanics and technical training. He added that because there was still a large contingent of road cyclists in and around the Helderberg, it made sense to have a sweeper vehicle following them to make cycling on the roads safer. “At a later stage we also plan to get motorcyclists from the ‘Think Bike’ campaign to assist us on rides,” he said.

Members of the Wannabees Cycling Club, staff from Cycle Lab Winelands and Marius Claassen from Toyota Rola met at Rola Toyota in Strand recently, where the Toyota sweeper bakkie was handed over. They are (back, from left) Ralph Rudd, Michel de Clip pel, Sue Kirk and Charles Nesbitt; in front are Joretha and Salmay Hindle and standing in front are Deon Kruger (Cycle Lab Winelands), Marius Claassen (Rola Toyota) and Ivan RuthvenBruijns (Cycle Lab Winelands).

White steenbras, kob and galjoen come on the bite again Shore anglers reported a slight improvement in fishing during the past week. The rock and surf “manne” are slowly creeping out of the woodwork and there were a few positive reports of winter fish being caught all along the coast. Strandfontein and Macassar delivered a few white steenbras, the odd kob and some good size galjoen. One angler reported catching a 2.75kg galjoen at the outlet pipe at the start of Macassar beach. One or two smaller white steenbras were caught at the Eerste River mouth on Macassar beach and a 7,4 kg belman was also caught on Melk bay beach. During the weekend a number of keen anglers targeted belman, but only a few were taken behind the swimming pool in the shallows of Blakes beach. The odd wildeperd and size galjoen and a number of white stumpnose were also caught along Blake’s beach and at Harmony Park. There were reports of galjoen and dassie from Mosselbank and Steenbrasgat just off Harmony Park. I was pleased to hear that Gordon’s Bay resident Elnino Silva, who is a well-known kob and steenbras angler and was also the top Goodwood angler for many years is fishing again. He is now 75 years old and only recently started fishing again after a long layoff. While fishing from Bikini Beach using red bait Elnino and his grandson were fortunate to land a size galjoen, a white stump and two dassies, one being a big 2,5 kg fish. News from Pearly beach is that their club of 46 members took part in a competition on Saturday. Only six members weighed in fish. A number of members of the False Bay club fished for three days at Brandfontein area. Stefan le Roux fishing with his father Joe had one steenbras of 7 kg. The fish was caught on prawn. Also fishing in that area was club member Jan Brink and his sons Jano and Schalk. They had a number of size galjoen fishing with very light tackle.

Heartening news is that a few snoek were caught in the Kleinmond area during the past weekend. Jean du Plooy had some good luck on the reefs around Steenbras River last weekend catching two huge red romans. Professional fisherman Koen de Villiers of Gordon’s Bay told me that white steenbras, kob, leervis and elf are being trekked in the Kleinmond lagoon. However, no trek licenses were issued for that area. This past Saturday, Overberg Boat Angling Club was host to the Western Province inshore south league. The competition was marred by miserable weather conditions and a few brave skippers and crew took to the water. The boat Deep Fry’d from Gordon’s Bay, skippered by Louis Becker, managed to catch 13 silverfish (carpenters) early in the morning. The biggest being a fish of 2,90 kg caught by Morné Marais. Some red roman of up to 1,7kg were also caught. Later during the day they found some red stumpnose in the 2,5kg class. Crew member Patrick Christodoulou managed to catch a red stump of 4,20 kg. Crew on the boat Relentless, also from Gordon’s Bay, skippered by Daniel Hughes, caught a couple of red roman and red stump in the 2,5 kg range. Willie Geldenhuys and crew on Pica 2 from Gordon’s Bay managed to find some roman and a 2,7 kg red stumpnose that was landed by the junior Bradley Bartlett. Top boat was Deep Fry’d with 1 000 points, followed by Relentless with 196 points. Top angler honours went to Patrick Christodoulou, with Morné Marais second, Louis Becker third and Delano Goldberg in fourth position. The next league competition will be hosted by Gordons Bay Boat Angling Club on 2 August. BIG REDS

Strand boat angler Jean du Plooy with two big red romans he caught while fishing on the reefs around the Steenbras River mouth from his boat last weekend. Fishing from the shore and from boats picked up considera bly around the False Bay coastline last weekend. Read Art Ridgway’s Fish ’n Chirps column on page 26 for more fishing news.

Hardworking flank forward for Macassar, Werner Williams, goes on a determined drive for his team during the derby.

No H’berg home games this week It’s not often that we have a scenario with absolutely no home games in the Helderberg midway through the season, but this is exactly the case this weekend. Strand United, Strand Pioneers, Strand, St Georges, Sir Lowrians and Helderberg are all off this weekend, with the rest of our local clubs all playing away from home on Saturday. Congratulations to Sir Lowrians for getting the double win over Macassar, while Strand Pioneers are still top of Division 3, although they haven’t played for two weeks. St Georges are back to their winning ways and Helderberg are seventh in the Super A League. United and Strand are also not doing too badly in the Premier B division league with that much anticipated derby still on the cards. This weeks fixtures are: Macassar (6) vs Kraaifontein (3) (at Kraaifontein) Macassar should be kicking themselves for not beating Sir Lowrians on Saturday, after they got themselves into a good position to do so. Kraaifontein on the road is never easy, although Macassar won the firstround match. I still somehow feel Macassar could win this one as they have a good squad. Prediction: Macassar to win by 5 Raithby (4) vs Rocklands (10) (Rocklands) Raithby got their season back on track for a top-five finish with their win over Silverleaf, but the pressure will be on to beat tenth-

placed Rocklands. Rocklands lost in the dying moments to log leaders Violets last week, so they won’t be easy to beat. Division 1 is closely contested and a win or loss could either propel you to second or have you drop to eighth spot on the log. Prediction: Raithby to win by 10 All Saints (3) vs Blue Stars (4) (Klapmuts) All Saints will have to win this game or accept that they will end third or fourth this season. Having won the first-round match Saints will travel confidently but will have to contend with a vocal Klapmuts crowd. Prediction: All Saints to win by 7 or less. With the Stormers missing out on a playoff spot in the Super Rugby competition, we as clubs should hope Western Province make a home semifinal and a possible final in the Currie Cup, in order to be sure of a club grant next season. Revenue at home matches makes up for most of the unions’ income. With WP Vodacom assistant coach Labeeb Levy involved in a scuffle at a club match between his club SKW and Tygerberg, focus is again on behaviour of our officials at club matches. Let’s work together to keep the game clean.

PREMIER A LEAGUE: MACASSAR VS SIR LOWRIANS

Sir Lowrians win derby Sir Lowrians beat Macassar 2418 in a thrilling derby played at the Macassar sports grounds on Saturday. Thousands of spectators pitched up to witness this long-awaited encounter between the raw, yet talented Macassar team, and the star-studded Sir Lowrians team which included three former Springboks as

well as former provincial player and Vodacom Cup player in the form of Sydney Tobias. The game started off at a blistering pace and a fierce battle also ensued between the two packs of forwards. After one particularly robust exchange a fight broke out and three Macassar forwards and one Sir Lowrian forward were sin binned.

Sir Lowrians took advantage of the three Macasar players who were sin binned for 10 minutes and scored a converted try. Macassar however fought back hard and were rewarded with four penalties that were converted by Garth de Bruin (3) and Bradley Daniels (1) to bring the half-time score to 12-7 in Macassar’s favour. The second half started with high

intensity from both teams, but it was the Sir Lowrians team that drew first blood with two unconverted tries by their backs to lead 12-17. Macassar struck back with a penalty by Bradley Daniels (15-17). Sir Lowrians then stretched their lead with a converted try to make the score (15-24). From then on Macassar dominat-

ed possession and attacked their opponents line from every corner of the field. Their efforts paid off when they received a penalty which they successfully converted to change the score to 18-24. The last 10 minutes saw Macassar playing in their opponents 22-metre area, but the Sir Lowrians defence held firm to prevent them from scoring any points.
