GORDON’S BAY: CONSTRUCTION WORKER MISSING

R escue e ffort iin nv ain Rescue effort vain The NSRI Gordon’s Bay’s sea rescue crew and the police diving unit in action on Tues day morning, searching for the body of Mziwokholo “Patrick” Ndzombane (left) at the spot where he was last seen. The search commenced at 11:00.

JAMEY THOMAS

T

he body of a 28-year-old man, who is presumed to have drowned in Gordon’s Bay on Monday, has still not been found. According to Gordon’s Bay police communication officer, warrant officer Nico Beukes, the incident occurred around 13:00 on 28 January. Two men, Zandile Royi and Mziwokholo “Patrick” Ndzombane who worked at a construction site near the whale watch lookout point, clambered about 50 m down a nearby cliff to cool off in the water.

“Since the construction site was above the area where they cooled off, the men went down to the sea daily during their lunch break,” said Beukes. Apparently on this particular day Patrick was standing on a rock, bending down to wash his face when a big wave knocked him into the water. A panicstricken Patrick kept calling his friend for help, but because Zandile could not swim, he made his way back up the cliff in search of help. However, when he returned a couple of minutes later, Patrick had already disappeared under the water where he was last seen. “A search team under the command of

Clive Tessner from the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) Gordon’s Bay Station 9 was immediately launched. Metro Mountain Search and Rescue, as well as the Gordon’s Bay ambulance service also rendered some support and assistance.” An extensive sea and shore search by the police diving unit, which was further assisted with a diving platform by the NSRI Gordon’s Bay’s sea rescue craft Jack Riley, was also initiated. According to a statement released by the NSRI, the search on Monday afternoon revealed no sign of the missing body. “Due to the strong sea current and extreme challenges presented, the search

was called off,” said Beukes. The search, as planned, did continue the following day at 11:00. However, despite their efforts, no body was recovered. “The next step is probably to wait until the body washes out. We will be circulating e-mails to police stations in surrounding areas imploring them to notify us if the body should wash out in their area.” An inquest docket has been opened. The Gordon’s Bay police have confirmed that Patrick is originally from the Eastern Cape but resided in Nomzamo, Strand with his wife and two children. The family could unfortunately not be reached for comment at the time the newspaper went to print.

Xolile Nqambuza, by 021 854 9115 bel.

Vegetation fires cause delays on N2 JAMEY THOMAS AND NIKITA SYLVESTER The five fires that occurred in the Helderberg and its surrounding areas on Monday (28 January) not only resulted in soaring temperatures, but also left motorists feeling the heat. Motorists travelling on the N2 were confronted by heavy traffic congestion caused by two vegetation fires in particular, which broke out between Baden Powell and Macassar Roads and the N2 and R102 (in the direction of Firgrove). According to Chief Inspector Merle Lourens, media liaison officer for Cape Town Traffic Services, the N2 (outgoing) at the Macassar turn-off was closed at 14:14. The N2 (incoming) was closed at the R102 at 14:55 due to thick smoke and fire fighters in the area. According to Theo Layne, spokesperson for the City of Cape Town’s Fire and Rescue Services, a total of 21 fire fighters responded to the blaze near Firgrove around 13:35. However, additional resources were requested, as well as traffic assistance for the smoke hazard presented on the N2. Eventually seven City of Cape Town traffic officers and two officers from Provincial Traf-

fic rendered their assistance. “Fire fighters battled the blaze for four hours and 23 minutes. Luckily, no injuries were sustained,” said Layne. According to Lourens the N2 (incoming) was reopened at 17:55 and the N2 (outgoing) at 18:12. “Motorists were advised to assist by taking alternative routes and not cause more congestion by ‘rubber-necking’,” she said. NEWS SUMMARY On Thursday 17 January, a Strand High School pupil was attacked by three men and hit over the head with a firearm just a few meters away from the school. According to this Gordon’s Bay resident (14), the incident occurred between 07:15 and 07:30 while she and two of her friends were on their way to school. “I eventually screamed for help but the man with the firearm told me to be quiet and hand over my phone.” - page 2 An animal lover from Somerset West says her children are deeply traumatised after their 11month-old cat was recently bitten to death right in front of them by a dog without a leash. Corné Davies lives across from Radloff Park and says pet owners regularly walk their dogs there. She says although there is signage clearly indicating that all dogs need to be kept on a leash, this appears to be the exception rather than the rule. - page 4

“Ek was kwaad, maar ek het my cool ge-

hou.

Church now playground for vagrants ILLANA FRANTZ Four suspects were arrested after being caught with drugs on the grounds of the historical Dutch Reformed Church in Church Street, Somerset West on Friday 25 January. According to Somerset West resident Beatrice Wiltshire, the church and the CDB as a whole, have become an eyesore. “We wrote letters complaining

about the state of affairs to the authorities, but there is still little improvement. “Parts of the town centre have slipped into a decline of slum-like proportions. At times it is rife with gangster activity and it’s mostly a no-go zone,” she said. Wiltshire said the church’s decline accelerated from about June last year when the cul-de-sac in front of the church became the site of an illegal taxi stacking facility. “At that time a small nursery

school which occupied the premises, was forced to move out and the building stood empty, hence the grounds becoming a site of vagrant activity.” According to Wiltshire the iron gates at the front and back of the church were removed and graves were vandalised. The electrical supply to the church was disrupted by copper cable theft. Windows were broken into, in order to gain access and the inside of the church was also badly vandalised. “The historical graveyard now resembles a squatter camp.” On Friday 25 January a member of the Helderberg Crime Watch (HCW) visited the church grounds in another capacity. He noticed untoward activities on the property and called for assistance after which a response vehicle arrived promptly. Four suspects were detained after dagga and mandrax were found in their possession. SAPS were called to the scene and the suspects were arrested. NIKITA SYLVESTER The 18-year-old Indigenous Plants Nursery at the Helderberg Nature Reserve is set to close and cease operations by the end of March this year. Friends of Helderberg Nature Reserve say although they and many residents sincerely regret the closure of the nursery, they have agreed to see method in the madness.

Penny Smith overlooks the Indigenous Plants Nursery that will close by the end of March 2013.

According to David Macdonald, vice chairman for the management committee of Friends of Helderberg Nature Reserve, the biodiversity management branch of the City of Cape Town has requested that The Friends close the nursery to comply with the City’s flora management policy which no longer permits nurseries and plant propagation within reserves due to the risks of hybridisation and invasive species. “We understand that this policy constitutes best conservation practice and we accept it as a necessary step to help ensure that Helderberg Nature Reserve will qualify to be formally proclaimed as a municipal nature reserve under national environmental regulations.” Proclamation will provide the best possible long-term protection against pressures from land developers and radio towers. Linda Wienand who assisted in establishing the nursery 18 years ago and has been a faithful volunteer until now, says although she is rather shocked and upset about the closure they had a good run. “We helped educate the community and helped many eco-schools in the area,” explains Wienand. She says that residents should continue to

plant indigenous plants in their gardens, “it is water-wise, as succulent plants don't need a lot of water and it attracts various kinds of birds and butterflies.” Macdonald added that the nursery was subsequently expanded to become a popular source of plants and advice for many gardeners. “We are most grateful to all the volun- Loyal servants to the Indigenous Plants Nursery, Linda Wienand, teers who have Sylvia Jones and Penny Smith have spent more than a decade worked so hard over working at the nursery. the years to care for the delicate cuttings and shrubs and have pro- Cape. “We recommend that residents contact othvided service and advice to the public.” According to Osman Asmal, director of the er nurseries in their area for information on environmental resource management depart- indigenous plants and to find out what indigement for the City of Cape Town, the plants sold nous plants they have on offer.” A closing-down sale is currently being held at the Indigenous Plants Nursery at the Helderberg Nature Reserve were purchased from at the nursery with most of the remaining several larger nurseries within the Western plants being sold at 30% discount.

Family members die on same date On 18 January 2003 Elna du Toit’s daughter, Heloise Schwab, was treated with medicine for a bladder infection. She had an allergic reaction to the medication and died. On exactly the same day, a decade later, Du Toit laid her mother, Francina Lategan, to rest next to her daughter after she had died from cancer. “It’s a terrible time for me. My mother was ill with cancer and I brought her home and she died in my arms,” says Du Toit. “They are buried next to each other. It opens the hurt again for one, and brings back all the memories.” Du Toit lost her 22-year-old daughter when she took her to a Gordon’s Bay doctor to get a prescription for her bladder infection. The prescription was filled by their usual pharmacist opposite the doctor’s rooms. Schwab, who unknowingly was allergic to penicillin, took the medication as instructed, but broke out in a rash shortly afterwards. Du Toit rushed her back to the pharmacy, but by the time they arrived there, she had started turning blue. The pharmacist administered injections to Heloise, but by the time an ambulance arrived, she was unconscious and had to be resuscitated. Schwab was in a coma for eight days, before she died. The case went to court, and dragged on for five years, but neither the doctor nor the pharmacist was found guilty of negligence. “She was alive and healthy. She only had

an infection. After seeing the doctor and the pharmacist, she died, but they say no one is responsible,” says Du Toit. “One can never make peace with it. There is no closure.” The trauma still haunts Du Toit. “Every time a family member has to go to a doctor, I’m in a state. The fear starts all over again.”

Mail Patience absent on roads at time of fire Fire fighters and traffic officials in the Helderberg had their hands full fighting fires and controlling traffic on Monday. An estimated 7 000 hectares of land, including farmlands, alien vegetation and indigenous fynbos, were destroyed in raging veld fires which swept across the Boland. These runaway fires were fanned by winds in excess of 40km/h and caused huge clouds of smoke over the Helderberg, making visibility difficult for motorists. Extra traffic officials from the City of Cape Town were called in to try and ease the traffic congestion. While all of this was happening motorists, who had been stuck in bumper to bumper traffic, were hooting and shouting abuse at other motorists and traffic officials – some even overtaking on the left side of the road putting firemen’s lives at risk and making matters worse. If everybody just displayed a little more patience and did not only think of themselves and looked at the bigger picture things would have flowed a lot smoother.

Dankie Neville Cooper Baie baie dankie aan Yellow Wood Tree Felling. Neville Cooper en sy mense het my uit my grootste penarie gehelp. Die grootste boom op my erf het op my motorhuis geval. Dit was op ’n Saterdag. My motorhuis se deur kon nie oopgemaak word om my Mercedes uit te trek nie. Ná vele oproepe het ek by Yellow Wood Tree Felling uitgekom. Hulle was regtig baie vinnig by my. Ek sal julle altyd aanbeveel.

SMOKY SUNSET: The fires and smoke experienced in the Helderberg this past week led to some spectacular sunsets, such as this one taken by Peter Bee on Strand beach earlier this week.

Restaurant patrons grumbling in Gordon’s Bay During September I purchased vouchers from City Slicker for meals at Harbour Lights Restaurant in Gordon’s Bay. During the second week of December, we made a reservation and mentioned the vouchers. We called the following morning, explaining that we wanted to bring along two more paying guests. On arrival at the restaurant my fiancee produced the voucher upon which the waiter said they do not accept them. I asked to speak to the manager and when I asked what the problem was, he stated the voucher had expired as there was a printing error on it. I asked why he accepted the reservation, but he denied having had the conversation with my fiancee. I then insisted on speaking with the owner, who was on the way.

Fifteen minutes later a man arrived introducing himself as the brother-in-law of the owner. After listening to my story he apologized, stating it was a misunderstanding and asked us to stay and enjoy the evening. A little while later another man came to our table saying he was the owner and would not honour the vouchers, and unless we were prepared to pay, we should leave. It was the worst treatment I have ever experienced in a restaurant. There was obviously some disagreement between the restaurant and City Slicker, and I and my guests had to bear the brunt of it. City Slicker has responded to my complaint by offering to refund the vouchers. Patrons beware!

from

Harbour

Lights and City Slicker: We featured a promotion for Harbour Lights Restaurant in Gordon’s Bay on our website from 24 -26 September. This promotion consisted of vouchers valid from 27 September to 5 November. There was an error on our side and an incorrect expiry date was featured (27 December instead of the 5 November). As soon as the error was discovered, we corrected the expiry date. However, we were not able to amend vouchers that had already been edited and printed by the first clients. This unfortunately resulted in clients printing vouchers with an expiry date of 27 December. We apologise profusely for any confusion arising from our technical error and propose a full refund to all clients who did not have the opportunity to use their vouchers because of this error.

Remember to use the Consumer Protection Act Over the past few months I have experienced major problems – on two separate occasions – regarding the return of defective goods within the warranty period with a large retail store in Somerset West. From the comments of other disgruntled customers at the returns counter, it is obvious that many people are not aware of their rights

in terms of the Consumer Protection Act. With this in mind I would like to draw the attention of your readers to section 56 of the Act, which provides that when returning defective goods to a supplier during the warranty period, a consumer has the right to opt for either a refund, a replacement or repairs to the item. Furthermore, in the absence of a specific warranty

Overthrust, all the way from Ghanzi in Bot swana, will perform at the SummerFest’13 at the Klein Libertas Theatre in Stellenbosch this weekend.

All-metal variety at SummerFest’13 at Klein Libertas Helderberg rockers and metal-heads are in for a treat this weekend with the all-metal festivities at SummerFest’13. It is presented by www.metal4africa.com and takes place at the Klein Libertas Theatre in Stellenbosch this Saturday. Of particular interest this year is the inclusion of a band travelling all the way from the dusty town of Ghanzi in Botswana. This band, Overthrust, plays a rough blend of old-school metal crossed with their African heritage. Patrick Davidson, event coordinator for SummerFest’13, said this is a first for Overthrust. “The Botswana metal-heads have taken on the role of ‘guardians’ in their local communities. When Overthrust organises a gig in Ghanzi, it becomes a whole weekend affair which includes litter clean-ups, car and motorcycle washing for fundraising. Funds raised are donated to a local orphanage,” he said. The show will not be complete without a strong contingent of Cape Town locals. This includes, among others, Infanteria (Table View) who are launching their debut album at the event; Suiderbees (Durbanville); The Warinsane (Bothasig) and My Dark Fugue (Paarl). Entry fee is R70 at the gate, and the venue opens at 16:00. Additional information can be requested from darkfiend@metal4africa.com.

"USINESS -!),

New team to lead Winter Wonderland The Gordon’s Bay Winter Wonderland Festival is proud to announce that a new team will be organising the event for 2013. Every year around June/July, Gordon’s Bay comes alive with flickering lights and begins to bustle with hundreds of visitors. The new team of volunteers to the Winter Wonderland family are, Allan and Jeanette Budge, Ruben van Berge, Marlene Bramley, Anton Gerber and Tania Scheepers. Kevin Wearing and André Paulson will be in charge of fundraising. According to Tania Scheepers, events coordinator for Winter Wonderland 2013, a whole new look and a list of exciting events are planned. Some of the activities include a music concert, a variety of exciting food and funky arts and crafts and a host of surprises for the whole family. The new enchanted fairy forest promises to transport visitors to a world of fantasy and

magic. The ever popular ghost house will make its well anticipated return as well as the beach side fun fair, always a winner with young and old alike. Employers’ remedies against unprotected strikes The recent spates of industrial action in the agricultural sector, which commenced in November 2012 and continued on 9 January 2013, are nonprocedural and unprotected. Employee behaviour has also been characterized by intimidation, violence and severe destruction of property, totalling in the millions within the Western Cape. Employers should consider any of the following options as a remedy against such illegal strike action. ) Restraining interdicts: Section 68(1) of the Labour Relations Act gives the Labour Court exclusive jurisdiction to grant an interdict restraining any person from participating in a strike that does not comply with the provisions of the Act, or any conduct in contemplation or in furtherance of such a strike.

) Compensation: Similarly the Labour Court also has jurisdiction to order the payment of ‘just and equitable compensation’ for any loss attributable to an unprotected strike. ) Discouragement: As in the case of protected strikes, the employer may withhold wages during unprotected strikes; Employers can also consider other measures to persuade workers not to strike, like e.g. withholding bonuses, rewarding nonstriking employees with an additional bonus; the refusal to back-date wages after a wage offer has been rejected. These options must however not unfairly discriminate against the strikers or amount to victimization. ) Disciplinary action short of dismiss-

al: The disciplinary penalty most commonly imposed on strikers after their return to work is a written or final written warning. However, the Code of Good Practice: dismissal expressly states that unprotected strikes may be regarded as a form of misconduct justifying dismissal. ) Lock-out: A further option to consider is to lock-out employees until they comply with the employers proposal. ) Termination of the contract: Dismissal is the ultimate sanction an employer can impose on unprotected strikers, assuming it is procedurally and substantively fair. In reële terme verarm jy elke jaar.

HHCC just too good for Sherwood Hottentots Holland Cricket Club’s (HHCC) first team scored a convincing eight-wicket win over Sherwood Manenberg in their match played at Gustrouw sports grounds last weekend. Sherwood resumed day two of the match on 16/3, 75 runs behind the first innings total set by HHCC. They managed to score 120 runs in their second innings which left HHCC 32 runs for victory. The best bowler was Yaseen Jakoet with 11-3-11, well supported by Gasant Moller, Emaad Opperman and Riyaad Oliver, each bagging two wickets. HHCC Assassins (second team) beat Wynberg by two wickets in their oneday match. Wynberg batted first and scored 184/8 in their allotted 35 overs. The best bowlers for HHCC were Ebrahim Pedro 7-3-32 and Fahdil Combie 7-2-31. HHCC passed Wynberg’s score in the 30th over with 8 wickets down.

The cricketers who played for the Hot tentots Holland Cricket Union in the 1952/53 season were the runners up for the Barnato Trophy. The club are hoping to hold a 60th anniversary cel ebration this year. The best batsmen for HHCC were Dawood Josephs 51, Yusri Jabodien 40, Ebrahim Aziz 28* and Hishaam Slamdien 27. HHCC Strikers (third team) played WPCC in a one-day match on Saturday and lost the game by eight wickets.

HHCC batted first and scored 179/4 in their allotted 35 overs. The best batsmen were Ridah Rhoda 94 and Morné Engelbrecht 31. WPCC passed the HHCC score in the 18th over with only two wickets down. HHCC are calling on all former players that played for the club since it was established in 1952 with the idea of holding a 60th year celebration. Players should contact the following players for further information as a function in aid of the celebration will be held towards the end of February or early March 2013 (venue and date to be confirmed): Ziyaad Salie on 072 170 7613 or Rafeeq Baderoen on 078 412 0029 or e-mail: rafeeqb@nedbank.co.za. Food will be on sale and all profits will be used for the 60 year celebration.

IRONMEN AND WOMEN: These triathletes from the Helderberg completed the Ironman 70.3 triathlon in East London on Sunday 20 January. They are (from left) Jason Smit, Helgo Hohenstein, Dianne Hoffman, Irene van den Berg and Howard Warrington. The race consisted of a 1.9 km swim, 90 km cycle and 21 km run and they had eight and a half hours to finish the race. They are all members of the Strand Athletic Club, 226 Triathlon Club and the Vineyard Swimming Club. Howard and Helgo will be competing in the full Iron man in Port Elizabeth in April this year. This race con sists of a 3,8 km swim, a 180 km cycle and a 42 km run. They will have 17 hours to complete this gruelling challenge.

Yellowtail come on the bite in Struisbaai During the past weekend the warm water and southeast winds were not conducive to shore angling and catches were poor. The long-awaited elf shoals have still not shown up and anglers fishing from kayaks and small craft in Melk Bay and Die Poort only caught a few small kob and white stumpnose. One angler trying for kob with prawn bait at Verleëbank only had one size copper stumpnose (bronze bream). Members from Gordon’s Bay Shore Angling Club also had limited success during their recent competition. One member, Johan Niemand, fishing at Die Dam landed a 5 kg kob and fellow member JD van der Merwe bagged a 6 kg Steenbras at Pearly Beach on Saturday. The stiff southeast winds also kept weekend and professional boat men from going to sea from Simon’s Town. Earl Fenwick and two crew members fished in Struisbaai on Saturday and had their full quota of yellowtail within two hours. He said these fish were all jigged or trolled near the bottom and were plentiful and quite a few fathoms down. Most of the fish were in

the 6 kg class. Besides the yellowtail on 6 mile bank other boats fishing during the night and early morning also had fair catches of geelbek. Two towing vehicles were stolen from Millers point last Thursday and have not yet been recovered, so be aware. False Bay Angling Club, sponsored by Olof Bergh Brandy, fished the sixth of their ten competitions of the season on Saturday 19 January. A gale-force southeaster made conditions miserable, but the anglers managed to catch a few fish. False Bay again won the day with a total of 509.33 points. The best False Bay angler of the day was Phillip de Jongh with six smooth houndsharks caught on the Strand reefs with a total weight of 98 kg. This increased False Bay’s lead to 1 178 points. False Bay Angling Club have been invited to fish the first South African Club Championships in April 2013. The three top clubs of every association affiliated to the South African Shore Angling Association have been invited to participate in this historical event. Barry Wareham, a KwaZulu Natal provincial and Protea angler was on holiday in Strand recently and relayed the following sto-

ry to me. He said he wanted to catch a yellowtail from Rooi Krans with his specialised spinning reel and 11 foot rod. His success with the iron candy couta casting spoons, and in particular the new green glow, gave him confidence to keep trying even though he hadn’t seen a fish in three outings. “On my last outing I had just changed from a proto-type new GT ice cream lure, which was skipping on the water in the windy conditions, to the glow green Couta casting spoon “On about my fourth cast I saw a predator just under the surface that came flying at my spoon. “It’s first attempt was a complete miss, and it became even more determined on the second, so much so that the spoon came right out of the water and I felt a distinct knock on the braid. “I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw him zig zagging to and fro trying to locate the spoon again. As soon as it saw the lure he came in even more aggressively and smashed it again. “When I tightened up and made sure that I was ‘vas’ the fish opened its mouth and shook its head from side to side.” Barry said the challenge then was to get from the side wall, next to the railway line in Simon’s Town, to the beach about 100 m away.

Visiting KwaZulu Natal provincial and Protea angler, Barry Wareham, with the yellowtail he caught off Simon’s Town beach on a glow green Couta casting spoon recently. On the beach the fish had one last run towards a reef 40 m away, but Barry turned it and got it to the beach. The yellowtail was 79 cm long (from mouth to fork in tail) and Barry said he couldn’t stop admiring the beauty and strength of his first yellowtail on this spinning rod and reel. For all your reel repairs and services contact Art on 021 854 3831. Send your fishing news and photos to bjridgway@telkomsa.net

31 Januarie, 2013

The first couple of weeks of the new school year are dominated by athletics and swimming, but now let’s turn our attention to cricket. This time of the year is always an exciting time when league cricket starts for primary schools in the Helderberg. There are 14 schools in the Helderberg taking part in the league this year and these include Applewood (Grabouw), Rhenish Primary and Eikestad (Stellenbosch. The youngest age group will be u.7 (minicricket) all the way through to u.13. The u.13A age group is always a hotly contested group, and this year will be no different. Schools like Beaumont, Somerset College, Rhenish, Eikestad, Lochnerhof, De Hoop, Hendrik Louw and Somerset House boast strong sides this year and it will be interesting to see

how they fare. There are also some exciting events coming up this year. Rhenish Primary will be hosting their 6’s competition this term with Beaumont hosting the DistrictMail 6’s later this year. As usual there will be some fantastic young talent on display from all over the Helderberg region. A number of our players from u.11 through to u.13 level represented WP last year and I’m sure this year will be no different. Good luck to all the cricketing schools in the Helderberg, may you have a fantastic cricket season ahead!

Sevens rugby is the name of the game With the club rugby season around the corner, rugby fever is running high in the Helderberg.

SEVENS TIME: Stalwart Helderberg Rugby Club veteran, Gary Williams, gets sand wiched between two St Georges players during the Helderberg Rugby Club Sevens Tournament last year. Helderberg RFC will be hosting their ninth annual Sevens tour nament at the club on Friday 8 and Saturday 9 February. The event will be spon sored by DistrictMail and Klipdrift and 20 teams will be playing for the R20 000 in cash prizes and the Ricky Petersen Sevens Shield. The action kicks off on Friday evening at the Charles Morkel stadium from 18:30 and will finish on Saturday after noon at 14:00. Previous winners of the tournament have been the hosts and St. Georges who have both won the tournament four times. There is still an opportunity for four more teams to enter the event. Clubs interested in playing may call Ricky Pe tersen on 072 127 5537. PHOTO: PETER BEE

Pirates pummel Mavericks once again Helderberg Pirates first baseball team beat Milnerton Mavericks by mercy rule for the third time this season in the match played at Radloff Park on Saturday. A characteristically strong pitching performance by Brad de Waal prevented Mavericks from posting any runs on the score board while aggressive batting by the home team allowed Pirates to open up an 11 run lead early in the game. This lead gave Pirates the opportunity to try new comer Damien Perkins on the mound and he didn’t disappoint. The game ended in style with Garth Uys hitting a grand-slam home run in the penultimate frame bringing the final score to 18–0 in just over 90 minutes.

Badminton Somerset West Badminton Club starts practising for the new season on Tuesday 5 February at the Beaumont Primary School hall in Van der Merwe Street, Somerset West. Practices will be held after this every Tuesday and Thursday evening at the hall from 19:30. The club are in need of new players and would like all former players and anyone interested in playing the sport to join them. Anyone interested in playing badminton may contact Mike on 082 4108 172.

Pirate’s second side were on the wrong end of the mercy rule when they travelled to Devonshire. The masters came up against a typically strong Lansdowne side who proved too powerful for them, despite their gutsy, resilient performance. On Sunday 3 February the Helderberg Pirates Baseball Club are hosting a fun softball day at Radloff Park. All sports lovers are encouraged to enter teams of seven to eight to play in what should be a fun filled day, or simply come and support family and friends. There will be a jumping castle for children and a cash bar for the adults on the day. For bookings and enquiries please contact Sara on 072 3994 900.

With the usual movement of players, appointment of new coaches and the bantering on the various social media websites, the standard of competitiveness has definitely been raised. February has traditionally been the month for sevens tournaments. With the more established Helderberg and Macassar tournaments, Strand Pioneers has now also come to the party and will be hosting their first ever, Spar Cinnamon Square sponsored Sevens Tournament. With three tournaments now being hosted in the Helderberg, I think our region can safely claim to be the sevens rugby hub in the Western Cape. News from the Pioneers management is that their tournament will take place this coming Saturday at the Abattoir Sports Grounds, starting at 10:00 with the current top-ranked

sevens team in the Helderberg, namely: St Georges, Strand United, Helderberg, Belhar, Strand RFC, Sir Lowrians and host Pioneers all in attendance. Three spectators stand a chance to win cell phones sponsored by Mobile Net Cinnamon Square in a fun-filled rugby atmosphere. This tournament serves as the perfect opportunity to fine tune combinations before the Helderberg Sevens. This tournament is taking place on the weekend of 8 – 9 February with huge prize monies amounting to R20 000. The start of the league is scheduled for 6 April, so spectators can look forward to quite a few pre-season warm-up matches till then.

DistrictMAIL HEARTBEAT OF THE HELDERBERG

TENNIS: AUSTRALIA

Wayne excels in Oz S

eventeen-year old tennis star, Wayne Montgomery from Somerset West excelled in not one but three major tennis tournaments in Australia this month.

The first was the Adelaide AMT where he lost in the semi-finals, the second was the Traralgon ITF where he lost in the singles quarterfinals to Nick Kyrgios 6–1, 6–1 and the third was the Australian Open (Juniors) where he again came up against Kyrgios (this time in the quarter finals) and again lost 6–1, 6 –1. This was an outstanding effort by Montgomery as Kyrgios, from Australia, is the number one International Tennis Federation (ITF) u.18 player in the world. Wayne is currently ranked number seven in the u.18 (ITF) in the world and is the current number one seeded u.18 player in South Africa According to Wayne’s father, Pierre, he has been playing tennis since he was four years old. He progressed through the age group ranks in South Africa rapidly until reaching the no 1 u.18 spot in SA. In January 2012 he went on a five-week tour (three tournaments) to Australia where he gained tons of experience, but lost mainly in second rounds of singles, and won the Traralgon tournament in doubles. Later in the year he toured in Europe for seven events

from 11 May – 8 July achieving the following results: Finalist Santa Croce (Italy) in singles in May, quarterfinalist in Italian Open juniors (Bonfiglio) singles in May, semi-finalist at Wimbledon juniors doubles in June. His next tour was to the USA/Canada from 16 August to 8 September where he was the winner in singles and doubles in the USTA Hardcourt tournament in Maryland in August and reached the quarterfinals of the US Open juniors (New York) singles in September. Wayne still represents Paul Roos Gymnasium at all their school tennis events, when he is at school, and catches up on schoolwork whenever he’s home.

SWCC snatch defeat from jaws of victory Somerset West Cricket Club’s (SWCC) first team lost their two-day match against Langa by seven wickets despite a commanding lead. SWCC started the second day on Saturday at Radloff Park with a 52 run lead and nine wickets remaining. After a solid enough start, wickets began to tumble at regular intervals and the home team were eventually bowled out for 109 runs after 57 overs. Only James Wilshere (32), who opened the batting, managed to put up real resistance. Jacque Fourie and Luigi Scheffers were the only other batsmen who chipped in with some runs. With a overall and comfortable lead of 148

runs SWCC took to the field confident of an easy win. However, this was not to be and the Somerset West fielders wilted as they toiled in the hot afternoon sun attempting to bowl out Langa for the win. Langa showed real fighting spirit as they slowly but steadily took control of the game and chased down the runs convincingly ending on 150/3 after 53 overs. A lack of bowling penetration as well as dropped catches and a flat pitch has resulted in SWCC losing 4 out of 5 two-day games this season. SWCC will have to focus and work really hard on their game, if they want to stay in this league next season.
