DistriksPOS HARTKLOP VAN DIE HELDERBERG

According to a police report, the incident happened at 15:30 on Thursday 19 September when a young man gained entry to the woman’s home by breaking the glass of the patio door at the back of the house. The intruder found the woman in the main bedroom where he overpowered and attacked her. According to the police, the man assaulted the woman by hitting her over the back of her head with a heavy object. It is alleged he then fled the scene with a laptop. The board and management of Helderberg Village confirmed the incident and said the woman had to be hospitalised. “The intruder robbed her of valuables like her laptop, cellphone, money and jewellery before running away,” said Helderberg Village CEO Vagn Nielsen. He added that the victim was able to alert the Village security on the premises by pressing the panic button. She was also able to provide an accurate description of her at-

tacker. Swift reaction by various roleplayers resulted in a man closely fitting the description being apprehended and taken into police custody the same day. However, he was released after questioning as he could not be linked to the crime. According to Nielsen it is believed that the suspect was an employee of a building contractor working at a nearby site. Captain Anneke van der Vyver, Khayelitsha SAPS Cluster Commander, says that a case of house robbery is being investigated and that no arrests have yet been made. “Village security remains at a high level with special emphasis being given to building contractors and their staff working on the estate. “The doctors treating the woman are satisfied with her progress to date and the board and management wish her a speedy recovery,” says Nielsen. Van der Vyver could not confirm if any similar incidents had recently occurred within the Village. People with information about the incident or the stolen goods, can phone warrant officer Carleigh Nomdoe at the Somerset West Police Station on 021 850 1336.

HELP FIND HER: The Gordon’s Bay police request the public’s assistance in finding Monique Rank who was reported missing. She was last seen on 17 September, walking from Firlands Farm in Sir Lowry’s Pass where she also attended school. Anyone with information about Rank can phone Ida Born on 072 214 7439.

Search for young man’s body still on The Gordon’s Bay police and the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) are still searching for the body of a young man after it disappeared in the water at Gordon’s Bay beach last Thursday. According to a police report, the incident happened at about 17:25 when the man was spotted walking on the rooi plein, the parking area opposite Gordon’s Bay beach. “The man was dressed in a black ski pants and as he was walking in the parking area he bumped into a stationery vehicle. “The driver of this vehicle confronted him, but the man simply mumbled something to him and continued to walk into the direction of the sea,” said warrant officer Nico Beukes, spokesperson for the Gordon’s Bay police. Eye witnesses noticed the man putting diver’s weights around his waist, before jumping off the pier into the water. Bystanders ran towards the pier where the man had jumped off, but he was nowhere to be seen. They then contacted the police who then alerted the NSRI. The police’s diving unit was also called to the scene, but the members had to abandon their search due to poor visibility and rough seas. The search continued but without any success. The identity of the victim is still unknown. People with information, can phone Detective Const Fanie Hendricks on 021 856 2317.

Misdaadbrokkies / Crime snippets Winkeleienaar gewond

Franklin Plaatjies by 082 469 3359 bel.

Robbery suspect arrested

) One suspect was arrested and two are still at large following a business robbery in Sir Lowry’s Pass last week. The incident happened on Saturday 14 September when three armed men entered the store at about 11:25. It is believed that one of the men ordered the shop assistant to lie down while his accomplices collected money, cigarettes and airtime from the shop. They then fled the scene in an unknown direction. Later that same day a 22-year-old man was arrested while sitting at a nearby shebeen. The man was positively identi-

fied by an eyewitness and charged with the robbery of a business. He appeared in the Somerset West Magistrate’s Court where his case was postponed for further investigation. No shots were fired during the robbery and no one was injured. The other two suspects are still at large. People with information can phone the Somerset West police on 021 853 1303.

Advocate Solwandle by 021 856 2317 bel.

De Beers Ave to be closed until December De Beers Avenue between Flamink and Forsyth Roads to Plymouth Avenue, will be closed temporarily in order to carry out upgrades. The work forms part of the municipal infrastructure upgrades required for the Helderberg Hyper development that is currently under way. The aforementioned section of De Beers Avenue will be closed from 22 September to mid-December, but the roads will be open for the December holiday season. Traffic will be diverted via the main road running through the mall and business area, i.e. Jigger Avenue, Centenary Drive and Forsyth Road. Upgrades will include full reconstruction

and re-grading of the road, kerb and channel to both road edges and the installation of stormwater pipes, footways and lighting. In addition, the intersection at Forsyth Road, Flamink Road and De Beers Avenue, which is currently a four-way stop, will be upgraded to a traffic circle. Simultaneously, the median of the main road through the mall and business area will be closed at the Jigger Avenue intersection, compelling traffic to turn left only into Activity Spine when approaching from Jigger Road east and west. The work will cause temporary disruption in the area and the City thanks residents for their patience during this period.

Monique and her husband Callie, were abducted by Al Quaeda Rebels in 2000. Monique will give a talk on Tuesday 1 October from 19:00 at the Erinvale Golf Club at 19:00. Tickets cost R180. For more information about the HSSG and to book your ticket, call 021 854 8118.

Strand boat fisherman drowns At the time of going to press on Wednesday afternoon one Strand boat fisherman had drowned and another was missing at sea. The man that drowned was Anthonie de Wit (better known as Tone) and the man still missing is Piet van As. The incident happened when the boat they were fishing in capsized between 3 and 5 nautical miles off the coast near Kleinmond at 10:00 on Monday. This unfortunate and tragic loss will be deeply mourned by the large boat fishing “family” in the Strand and in fact by all fishermen around the Cape. An incident such as this just proves that no matter how experienced and cautious the skipper of a boat is an accident at sea can happen. The skipper of the boat Phillip Schoeman (53) , who has been fishing on boats since he was a young boy is a well-known as respected boat captain. The other crew on board were his son Phillip (junior), Alwyn du Plooy and Joe Williams all survived and were rescued by the NSRI. Fishermen are aware of the dangers facing them every time that they go to sea, but this profession is in their blood and is simply something they must do, no matter how dangerous.

What has happened to our post office system? A friend from America recently posted some Catholic postcards to me. They did not arrive. He then contacted the post office and was sent an e-mail simply stating “What will be, will be”. I find this type of service delivery atrocious. I write regularly to a partially blind friend in Durban. It sometimes takes six weeks for her to receive my letters. She in turn sent a letter to her brother in Ireland and the letter was sent to Taiwan! What has happened to our post office system and to service delivery?

My eerste skrywe aan mev.

TINKIE STRAND

Shanie Boshoff, Hoof- uitvoerende beampte: ACVV skryf:

Is SA becoming the dumping ground of poor produce? When I came to South Africa from Europe, some 30 years ago, I noticed that the prices of imported goods were often cheaper than locally produced goods, so I started enquiring about cost margins and benefit calculating. Most people were astonished by my questions and the general answer I received was that businesses don’t calculate and put the highest mark-ups on items for the biggest benefit. Then if the item doesn’t sell, they lower the price until it sells well. If the product doesn’t give shop owners a big benefit, they take it off the market. Isn’t that a primitive approach? It seems that not much has changed since I arrived here 30 years ago. I once read there is no market for hybrid or electric cars in South Africa. What nonsense! It’s simple if you don’t import or produce a product there will be no market for it.

Well the same goes for these hybrid cars. But first verify the cost to support such statement. When I was in Reunion recently all our friends there drove hybrid cars. They’re not much more expensive than other cars and the increased cost can be recuperated from the fuel saving. They are also nice to drive and environmentally friendly. Unfortunately the prices in South Africa are much higher than in Europe so one can never recuperate the investment on fuel saving, which is why there is no market for these vehicles. Of course, as long as the government is thriving on high fueltaxes, oneshouldnotexpectany changes. The biggest difficulty in South Africa is the thinking behind selling any product. In most other countries, the thinking behind selling a product is to make a living out of it for oneself and for the staff. In South Africa the mind set is to

see how quickly businesses can enrich themselves. If it is not quick enough they’re not interested. Even if the product is not so good aslongasitsellsandmakesthebusinessman rich quickly they will try and sell it. This is poor egocentric mentality! How does the country, business, staffandgeneralpublicbenefitfrom it? This is why South Africa is inundated with scrap, poor materials, inferior appliances, bad products and even bad service and why it is fast becoming the dumping ground of poor produce. Most of those narrow-minded businesspeoplewillcomplainwhen shrewd foreign nationals come and take over their businesses. The only way this can stop is if businesses call for government protection to promote an artificial market, rather than trying to change their fossilised minds!

What point does these speed bumps have, other than the fact that the counsellor in the area wanted them? C. Deutschmann

Thanks to the Somerset West police services for going that extra mile I was filling up our Mercedes at the BP Service Station on Main Road opposite Virgin Active on Tuesday evening 20 August, around 20:00 when my husband called to tell me our Honda had overheated and broken down on the Macassar off-ramp on the N2, travelling towards Somerset West. As he could not contact our mechanic, he asked if I could come and tow the car home. On approaching the off-ramp, I noticed two police vehicles with their blue lights flashing. My heart skipped more than just one beat! To my relief, my husband was standing under a street-lamp on the side of the road with one of the officers waiting for me. As I was somewhat nervous of towing, especially at night, I asked if one of the officers could possibly assist us in towing our car home. They all readily agreed and assisted with fitting the steel tow-rope, escorting us and

steering the Honda home behind my husband and I. To facilitate towing on Wednesday, we were planning to leave the car on the roadside overnight as we have a rather steep driveway into our garage. Once again the officers advised against it informing us that car-theft, especially this particular model, was on the increase in our area at present. Many thanks once again to them for advising and informing us. We would like to go on record in expressing our sincere gratitude most specifically to warrant officers Strydom, Hattingh, Vercuil, and constable Michaels. They were extremely helpful, very courteous and all went more than just that extra mile to help us. Keep up the good work. DORIS AND DEREK SOMERSET WEST

Hermien van den Bergh (right), author of The Adventures of the Un stoppable Trackeroo and the Crew: The Land of Honestasia, at the recent book signing. Pictured with her are Callum and Daniella Finlayson.

A read that will thrill young readers Author Hermien van den Bergh recently held a book signing at Wordsworth in Somerset Mall at the book launch of The Adventures of the Unstoppable Trackeroo and the Crew: The Land of Honestasia. Trackeroo and the Crew are on a top-secret, life-threatening mission to earth. Entering the earth’s atmosphere via the roots of a tree, it is their mission to launch a secret weapon in the Concrete Jungle to annihilate a mysterious killer bug created by the Whicked Wheed to annihilate all earthlings. The Whicked Wheed is enraged by their audacious attempt to sabotage his evil plan and commands his ferocious army of Snatchers headed by the Vile Guile Ruler of Mayhem, comprising Rabble Rousing Ringleaders and the evil hordes of Robbers and Rogues.

While their mission is nerveracking at times, the antics of the lively mélange of characters are hilarious. They provide plenty of fun and smiles to calm down the nerves of anyone brave enough to follow their epic journey. “The story promotes honesty, courage, love beyond self, responsibility, diligence, forgiveness, social justice and personal problem-solving. It addresses head on the tough stuff that children deal with such as bullying, death, violence, rejection and vanity, and it inspires children to make the right choices and to stay on the right track in life,” said Van den Bergh. ) One lucky teen can win a copy of this book. To enter, simply SMS the title of the book, along with your name and surname to 34421. Entries close at 12:00 on Monday 30 September. Each SMS costs R1,50. The book is also available at Wordsworth in Somerset Mall.

Coping with seasonal allergies Spring is here, and while that means a welcome end to the winter weather, for many South Africans it also signals the beginning of runny noses, itchy eyes and constant sneezing. According to the South African Allergy Society, as many as 20–30% of South Africans suffer from allergic rhinitis, otherwise known as hay fever. “Over 500 million people worldwide suffer from hay fever, with children and adults 30 to 40 years old, experiencing the worst symptoms, says Allison Veinings, executive director of the Self-Medication Manufacturers Association of South Africa (SMASA). “Allergies result when the immune system identifies a foreign substance, such as dust or pollen, incorrectly, then classifies it as harmful and treats it as such,” explains Veinings. Hay fever, in particular, is the result of outdoor allergens such as pollen, and is periodic in nature. Grass is one of the main triggers of hay fever in summer, with allergic conjunctivitis (the allergic inflammation of the delicate membrane covering the inner and external part of the eyelid) being the most common seasonal allergy. More prevalent among

those with asthma, eczema and hay fever, its symptoms include redness and excessive watering of the eyes, swelling of the eyelids and whites of the eye, and itchiness. Winter allergies cause similar symptoms to summer allergies such as an itchy nose and eyes, sneezing and watery eyes, and are generally triggered by the use of heaters or fireplaces – the mould spores and insect parts that are often trapped in these objects are released into the air and find their way into the nose, setting off a reaction. Other indoor triggers are animals and mites. “Following the time line of how and when irritations start, can highlight whether someone is a seasonal allergy sufferer,” says Veinings.

“The best remedy for allergies would obviously be to avoid allergens completely, however, as this is not always possible, a sound knowledge of self-medication and responsible self-care is key for hay fever sufferers,” she concludes. SMASA, which advocates responsible self-care throughout the year, suggests the following actions to maintain a solid selfcare routine during allergy season: ) Keep a pack of tissues on hand for days when allergies are at their worst. ) Use eye drops to relieve itchy, watery eyes. ) Use an antihistamine to reduce nasal itching, sneezing and discharge. ) Use a decongestant during winter to clear mucus. As with any ailment or illness, prevention is better than cure. Consult your local pharmacist, nurse or health professional for the correct over-the-counter products to manage hay fever and other seasonal allergies and schedule an appointment with your doctor if symptoms persist. RUBRIEK

Is Capitec goed genoeg?

MTB Classic on Lourensford The Spur MTB Classic, one of the oldest fun mountain bike rides on the Western Cape MTB calendar, is taking place at the Lourensford Estate in Somerset West this Sunday (29 September). The fun ride offers four MTB distances, as well as kids events: • 15 km fun ride for children and novices – the route provides an opportunity for the casual rider who wants to enjoy a ride along orchards and vineyards. • 27 km fun ride for beginners – this route adds a loop to the 15 km route and offers an introduction to mountain biking. With roughly double the effort of the 15 km route, a brief ascent takes riders around the Blue gum dam with panoramic views across the valley and False Bay. • 38 km challenge for intermediate, but fit riders – this event provides the challenge of real mountain biking that will test your fitness, as well as your technical skills. Winding climbs along the slopes of the Helderberg leads riders to the highest point. A fast and hairy descent on the return guides to a number of awesome single tracks and thrills. • 57 km challenge for advanced riders – this route includes all the pleasure of the 38 km event and adds a loop to the Vergelegen side of the estate. More climbs, descents and single track will surely test your skills. And, fun events for toddlers are the 0.5 km and 1.5 km events, and the 3 km race for small children aged 10 and under. All finishers will receive medals and Coke. Refreshment stations are on the routes. Don’t miss the lucky draw after the event,

Seen here is Derek van den Berg from the Basin MTB Club toughing out one of the previous gruelling mountain bike rides. as all riders will stand a chance to win great prizes, including dinner and spa vouchers, accommodation at Erinvale Hotel and a giant simple single bike. The routes are designed and managed by the local Basin MTB Club, and it is important to note that this is a seeding event for Die Burger MTB Challenge 2014. Late entries will be available for all distances at registration on Friday at Dirtopia Trail Centre on Delvera Farm (12:00 – 18:00), Saturday at Sportsmans Warehouse in Somerset West (10:00 – 15:00) and Sunday morning at Lourensford Estate from 07:00. Visit www.dirtopia.co.za for information; phone Dirtopia Trail Centre on 021 884 4752; or e-mail theteam@dirtopia.co.za.

Kob fishing expected to pick up It appears that after the recent stormy seas the fishing season looks set to finally commence for most species of fish. This time of the year, especially the coming month of October, is always the best month for kob. Along our stretches of coast from Strandfontein, Macassar, Harmony and right round the coast to Kogel Bay there have been reports of reasonable galjoen catches with the odd white steenbras and kob. The Western Province Shore Angling Association’s monthly competition was held on Saturday and besides good galjoen catches only two kob, some cow sharks and spotted gulley sharks were weighed. Once again the members of the Brink family did well. Jan having his full quota of galjoen while his son Jano had one galjoen of 49 cm. Hillary Brink caught two galjoen at the Blokhuis at Macassar. Morné Visser weighed in one kob from Melk Bay beach. On Sunday kob, steenbras and galjoen were caught from the Strandfontein area. The recent stormy waters and high tides should open up most of the gullies on all our beaches and between the reefs exposing many kind of baits. There are also large amounts of red bait washed ashore and many anglers are stocking up while they can. The belman shoals often come to feed in the shallows as well. During the North weather Gordon’s Bay harbour wall, Bikini Beach as well as Black Rocks and Vogelsteen below the “five houses” are all good steenbras and galjoen venues. Also during the North both at high and low tide, Kogel Bay beach right up to the rocky area on both sides are white steenbras territory from either end of the beach. The fishing off the reefs is excellent for galjoen and dassie.

While writing about white steenbras and not trying to throw a cat among the pigeons could any angler or reader honestly claim to have witnessed a steamer of 20 kg (42.2lb) being weighed by means of an electronic scale. A 20 kg steenbras was weighed by Anton Dekker at Gordon’s Bay fisheries about 20 years ago. It was caught on prawn from Bikini Beach. I asked Anton to weigh the fish correctly because it beat my personal record of a 17,5 kg steamer caught on Melk Bay beach also on prawn. The biggest kob caught in our area was a 62,7 kg fish (138 lb) from the front of the Strand jetty by Koos Theart. We used the Strand station scale to weigh the fish. Many older readers and anglers will remember the legendary master of white steenbras Willie Morries. This man often caught “meneer” steenbras in the Hermanus area and from our local beaches. He was also one of the best distance casters around. This morning I was sad to hear that an old friend of mine and well-known Strand boat fisherman Tone de Wit drowned and fellow angler Pieter van As is missing at sea. They were crew members aboard the boat Aralda III which capsized near Kleinmond at 10:00 on Monday. The skipper, Phillip Schoeman and crew members Phillip Schoeman (junior), Alwyn du Plooy (all from Strand) and Joe Williams (from Brackenfell) survived and were rescued by the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) at around 19:00 on Monday evening. The boat apparently capsized when they were trying to pull up the anchor rope which had become stuck on the ocean bottom.

STRAND UNITED SURPRISE STRAND RFC WITH 32-26 VICTORY

Crowd-pleasing derby Strand United surprised everyone when they pulverised Strand RFC with a 32-26 win in their derby clash at Abattoir Park in Strand on Saturday (21 September). After leading with 26-5 at the break, Strand United took the foot off the pedal. Man of the match Muneeb “Duddy” Daniels contributed 22 points by landing five penalties, a drop goal and two conversions. Daniels dictated the game from the flyhalf and he completely dominated play from the pivotal position. Strand United scored their 26 points with tries scored by Fareez

and Ruschin Petersen in the first half, blowing Strand out of the park. Strand United forwards dominated up front and in the process took four tightheads. “Polly” de Mornay and Salaam Bonza was prominent on attack and defence and made it possible for Magdien Hercules and Tayyebs Arnold to play to their strength. Strand RFC took control in the second half and scored three further tries. The second half, however, ended up with Strand United on the attack once again. This derby win bodes well for the future and both teams can look back on a crowd-pleasing rugby match.

The derby clash between Strand RFC and Strand United was well attended by scores of supporters who flocked to Abattoir Park. However, it was this crowd of youngsters that kept the players on their toes.
