STRAND: BUSINESS TO CLOSE
Worker killed in robbery ILLANA FRANTZ
The owner of a bakery in Strand has decided to close his doors permanently, after a robbery on Monday left one of his employees dead. Deon da Silva, owner of Deon’s Bread Slicing in Smit Street, George Park, says he is opting to close his business out of fear that more people would get hurt if he were to continue running. Da Silva says he had been doing deliveries
Deon’s Bread Slicing for the past 12 years. The men then fled the scene in a white Mazda Midge with over R10 000 in cash. The staff members, in a state of shock, ran to neighbouring businesses to ask for help. The police were called and Da Silva was notified of the tragedy, and both rushed to the scene. Paramedics were also alerted, and though a helicopter was dispatched, Phumzile Salman (30) from Nomzamo died on the scene as a result of the gunshot wound to his head. “They could have just taken the money and
in Grabouw when the incident happened at 09:00 on Monday. According to his five staff members, five armed men posing as customers walked into the shop. Once inside, they pulled out their weapons, moved everyone to the toilet at the back, and demanded money. “They forced my sister to go the safe and hand over the money. “When one of the men caught one of my workers looking at him, he shouted, ‘Don’t look at me!’ and he shot him in the head,” says Da Silva, who has been running
left,” Da Silva says. “Why did they have to shoot him? “Everyone is still very emotional and sad about what happened,” he continues. “I also feel very down, as I was the one who had to inform his family. He had been working for me for three years.” A docket for business robbery and murder has been opened. The investigation continues, and no arrests have yet been made. Anybody who can shed light on the matter is urged to call Detective Warrant Officer Jaco Snyman on 0 021 854 9100.

SOMERSET WEST: STREET PEOPLE’S CENTRE
Homeless centre awaits fate JAMEY THOMAS Due to considerable opposition, it appears the fate of the Helderberg Street People’s Centre is hanging in the balance. The lease of the Helderberg Street People’s Centre in Somerset West expired in August, and whether it will be renewed is yet to be decided. DistrictMail has received a number of objections to the renewal from local residents and organisations. Peter Ford, chairperson of the Helderberg Residents’ Action Association, says there is strong opposition to the centre’s present location. “It is situated in the heart of the business district, in an area that urgently needs intervention to reverse incipient decay,” writes Ford. “If this is not done, the town will gradually deteriorate and its citizens will abandon it for other areas.” Ford says the centre draws people from other areas to the CBD daily, who then hang around and “contribute towards the general untidiness” of the area. Somerset West resident Ingrid Morrison also believes the centre should never have been allowed to operate in Busy Corner, not to mention next to a liquor outlet, outside of which, she says, the police arrest drug dealers regularly. “It should also not be situated opposite a library, close to a primary school, and within walking distance of old-age homes,” writes Morrison. In her letter to DistrictMail, she says criminals “hide amongst the ‘homeless’, many of whom are not truly homeless but refuse assistance from social services, choosing to live
TAKING A STAND AGAINST DRUGS: Andrew Arnolds of anti-crime and -drug organisation City of Light shows on a map of Broadlands Village the route along which they, in conjunction with the Lwandle police, will march against drugs on 3 November. Arnolds says the high-crime area has 28 drug houses. The march will start at 12:00, after an address by Lwandle station commander Lieutenant Colonel Bongani Mtakati at 08:00. Phone Andrew Arnolds on 084 689 0820 for more information.
The Helderberg Street People’s Centre is situated in Victoria Street. on the streets and continue in their self-destructive habits”. On the other hand, Ian Greer, chairperson of the Helderberg Street People’s Centre, says the centre’s current site is the ideal one from which to run it. “We do not wish to be moved out of the centre town and out of sight, where we will be inaccessible to those requiring help. “We would gladly relocate, provided that a premises could be found that is accessible and amenable to both the poor and our volunteers,” says Greer, who says the centre does more than merely provide hundreds of homeless people with clothes and food – it also gives them the opportunity to obtain an education.
Greer says almost 2 000 people have signed and submitted a petition to the City, requesting that the centre stay where it is until a suitable alternative can be found. “Eight churches gave their support, and NGOs have voiced their support for the centre. These voices need to be heard.” Stuart Pringle, a ward councillor and chairperson of Subcouncil 8, says he is working on the establishment of a skills development centre, for which premises have already been found. This ties in with the City’s plan for a job-seekers’ database or centre, together with a social development precinct that is intended to bring together the many initiatives dealing with homelessness, making it convenient for
those who need its services. “It will allow people to give responsibly to those in need, while growing the skills base and transforming the town into a people-centred environment where business can thrive, jobs can be created and poverty reduced.” The City of Cape Town’s Property Management Department has advertised a proposal for the centre’s lease renewal, and all comments and objections, along with the centre’s responses to them, will be considered before a decision is made. A prayer meeting on the issue will be held tomorrow (Friday 26 October) at the United Church in Somerset West at 10:30. ) Read the letters on page 8 for more.

And the rain came down NIKITA SYLVESTER
his past month, numerous streets across the Helderberg were flooded by raging storms.
Last Friday, the stormy weather once again took unprepared residents by surprise, and many battled to enter and exit their homes and workplaces due to the waterlogged roads. Subcouncil 8 chairperson Stuart Pringle says the City of Cape Town conducts a “winter readiness programme”, during which drains are cleared, to prevent flooding. “Obviously the very heavy falls this year have resulted in flooding in spite of this,” says Pringle. Having been informed by the City of Cape Town’s Roads and Stormwater Department of-
Helderberg residents were greeted by snow on the Hottentots Holland Mountains on the morning of 19 October.

ficials, he explains that this flooding occurs from time to time because the underground stormwater systems are only designed to cater for smaller, more frequent rainstorms. “Roads act as a secondary system for the transport of stormwater, and will therefore always be full of water when the capacity of the underground system has been exceeded,” says Pringle. “In instances where properties are flooded, we do our best to source funding to address the problems.” According to the WeatherSA, the weather for the upcoming week is expected to be mostly warm and sunny. No rain has been forecast. ) See the tables to the right for the rainfall figures. Rainfall exceeding 50 mm in one day is considered severe. New Liquor Act discussed in meeting GORDONSBAAI: HAASBOERDERY The Somerset West police will hold a meeting on Monday 29 October to discuss the new Liquor Act. It will be held at the Somerset

Hiervoor moes Charl hom ’n addisionele R2 500 gee,” sê Aletta. Sy vertel hulle het later, toe hul dogter by hulle kom kuier het, uitgevind dié man is eintlik ’n skurk. “Dié man het R40 000 verloor.”

SIGN OF THE TIMES: New signs for dog owners are being put up along beaches by the City of Cape Town’s Sport, Recreation and Amenities Department. “For many, dog-walking is an important part of their coastal experience,” says councillor Tandeka Gqada, mayoral committee member for community services. “However, the City also recognises that dogs can, at times, negatively impact on the experience of other beach users. The City has allocated a mix of dog-free beaches where no dogs are allowed; beaches where dogs are allowed on leads at certain times; and beaches where dogs are allowed to run free.” Helderbergers can walk their dogs west of Gordon’s Bay main beach. SOMERSET WEST: CABLE THEFT
Park robbed of light NIKITA SYLVESTER AND ILLANA FRANTZ
everal days after Reitz Park was endowed with lighting, cable thieves struck, leaving the park in darkness once more.
Somerset West resident Des van Niekerk made the discovery last Thursday while walking her dogs in the park. “We saw piles of earth next to where the cables had been laid. They had been stripped close to the bank of the Lourens River.” Ward 84 councillor Stuart Pringle was informed of the incident on the same day. “The idea was to create an area where the community could walk in the evenings with the lights to make it easier, safer and a more pleasant experience,” explains a disappointed Pringle. He says he decided to install the lights after he had the council put up a fence along Reitz Street last year to keep vehicles off the park.
Van Niekerk, who has been living in Fagan Street for the past five years, says she’s very unhappy about the theft. “It was horrible to see how taxpayers’ money was wasted. It’s also sad to see how easy it is for them to steal.” Pringle adds to this sentiment. “It is sad when a community takes ownership of a public space and wants to make use of it, but a majority of criminals seek to ruin things. It would be tragic if we were forced to lock public open spaces at night to protect the people’s assets. “I am currently working with several community groups and organisations to look at ways to secure our parks without turning them into gated areas,” says Pringle. Although the City of Cape Town will repair the lights, it’s turning into a costly exercise – the amount spent on the project from ward 84’s budget allocation came to R50 000. Pringle has notified the City’s ferrous metal theft unit, which is investigating the matter. It has also been reported to the police.
IN MEMORIAM: Boet Deysel (64), sales manager of the local Cash Converters, died on 21 October. He was well loved by his staff and clients. Matrics put pen to paper for last time Monday morning marked the start of the final 2012 matric examinations for some 48 000 pupils in the Western Cape. For many grade 12 pupils this is also the most stressful and difficult time in their school career, as they put pen to paper for the last time in a school uniform. Parents, families and friends should be supportive and understanding, and help these young adults complete the most important examinations of their lives. The fear for the majority of these grade 12s is that they will be writing external exams, and have absolutely no idea at all of what to expect, which in turn leads them to worry and stress more. Even for those hard-working and diligent pupils who have worked hard for the entire year and have prepared well for these finals, the fear of the unexpected still looms. Schools understand and know all too well the trying times that matrics go through, and look out for students displaying signs of severe stress, depression or even suicidal tendencies. These students are closely monitored and encouraged to speak to counsellors if they feel they are not able to cope. However, students who have prepared well for these exams should show fewer signs of stress than their siblings who have not put in the same amount of effort. Plenty of sleep, a healthy diet, exercise and fresh air during breaks will all help alleviate the stress.
Town centre soup kitchen debate gets warmer The invitation to a prayer meeting in support of the Street Peoples’ Centre is a fine initiative by compassionate people who give of their time and energy to alleviate the suffering of the poor and homeless. I hope, though, that the earnest prayers for guidance will include all parties – not only our councillors and the officials of the City of Cape Town, but also those who support the soup kitchen. Among those who offer considerable opposition from some sectors of the community, to which Ian Greer refers, are many worthy citizens who share his compassion for the homeless, but who believe that a Christian response to their needs can and should also be compatible with the interests of a wider and deserving public. The present dispensation is incompatible with those needs. I know of strong opposition over at least four years and probably longer to the present siting of the soup kitchen run by the centre. This is not necessarily opposition to the soup kitchen, but to its present location. It is situated in the heart of the business district of the town, in an area that urgently needs intervention to reverse incipient decay. Right now, vigorous and determined efforts are well under way by councillors, civic organisations, citizens, business leaders and the City to redress the decline and to develop a vision for an improved town centre. If this is not done, the town will gradually deteriorate to a point
where its citizens will abandon it for other areas. As it is, some business premises are not lettable at reasonable rentals or to stable tenants, and this situation is worsening. The soup kitchen is in this area and, over and above the homeless of the town, it attracts outside people to the town centre every day who inevitably tend to loiter and contribute towards the general untidiness. The problem is made worse because, regrettably, at this stage the town still has difficulty in providing amenities like conveniences and rest rooms. Furthermore, it is clear that many of those who receive free soup are in fact people in employment in the town, who understandably take advantage of a free benefit. The fact is that the Street Peoples’ Centre is providing a free service to many people who are not those whom it was originally intended. Mr Greer believes that his organisation is in the right location. It seems that his view does not to take into account that the town centre has to serve all the citizens of Somerset West, numbering many thousands, most of whom contribute heavily through rates and taxes to maintain the town. Their interests and their concerns are certainly reasonable and entitled to fair consideration. Increasingly, people are reluctant to use the CBD and prefer outlying areas, where possible. Business, too, tends to migrate out of the CBD. This is the lifeblood of the
town draining away. The soup kitchen is not the sole cause of this, but it is a serious contributory factor, and this is why many people consider it undesirable that the lease should be renewed. There are in fact other active and effective organisations which also seek to alleviate the problems that the Street Peoples’ Centre addresses. Oasis, a non-profit NGO, has achieved noteworthy results in rehabilitating homeless people among their own families and in assisting others with problems of illness and substance abuse. The subcouncil and the City are actively and urgently engaged in establishing an unemployment and skills training centre not far from the town centre. It is the intention that such a centre should provide accommodation for a soup kitchen. While these arrangements are incomplete, it is clear that the problems of the homeless are a matter of serious attention for many. I hope, therefore, that the prayer meeting will entreat divine wisdom and guidance for all the parties to recognise that a solution to the problem of the centre should also accommodate the legitimate interests of the townsfolk, and that the welfare of all is achievable within the spirit of goodwill and compassion that exists if everyone is willing to grasp the available hand of friendship and cooperation.

Objections to soup kitchen come from ‘a broad spectrum’ One would hope that Ian Greer’s prayers for the “poor and most vulnerable” members of our society will include the mostly elderly rate- and taxpaying residents who live in the adjacent residential areas and who see the value of their properties, their life savings, greatly reduced as a result of the deterioration of the CBD, largely caused by the soup kitchen, which to a great extent serves not the “homeless”, but employees of nearby businesses. This soup kitchen should never have been allowed next to a liquor outlet and in a location – Busy Corner – where law enforcement agencies arrest drug dealers regularly. The fact that liquor bottles and cigarette butts litter the areas where the vagrants sleep attests to
this. It should also not be situated opposite a library and primary school, and within a short walking distance of a concentration of oldage homes. It is a fact that criminals are known to hide amongst these “homeless”, many of whom are not truly homeless but refuse assistance from social services, choosing to live on the streets and continue in their self-destructive habits. It is also a fact that this flies in the face of the City’s “Give Responsibly” programme, which aims to “teach a man to fish” and has seen so many successes at the fairly recently established Oasis centre, which concentrates on reintegrating people into society, as well as skills training and employment
opportunities, thereby reestablishing a sense of self-respect. This is true Christian charity. It has been known for many years that the 10-year lease of the soup kitchen would come to an end this month, and most organisations have worked with the authorities on its relocation to a precinct more conducive to the wellbeing of the homeless. There have been objections to its present location from a broad spectrum of organisations and residents representing the wider community – not a minority, as Mr Greer’s letter would imply. His statements to the contrary are thus disingenuous.

Beautiful? No more I lived in the most beautiful town of Somerset West from 1961 until 2006. I came back for a holiday this month, and what a shock. This town has now become any of the many small towns going down the drain. Main Road has become dirty, and what with all the shops – for example, the R5 shops – and the people trading in Main Road and side rows, it is horrid. I always wanted to come back, but now no more. Please, can the town get its act together?

rie of Februarie terugkom. Toe ons uitloop, vra ek dié man wat nou? Jare terug was dit All Pay, toe almal rekenings by die poskantoor of bank moes oopmaak.

Watch out for robotrunning prisoner van There is a need to warn motorists to use extreme caution when using the green light to move forward at the major intersection in the Helderberg. The driver of the police van used to transport prisoners to the local magistrates’ courts disregards the traffic lights when they turn red against him and proceeds though the intersection at high speed. Asthefirstinlinetousethegreenarrows to the right up the R44 at the Lord Charles
intersection, only very prompt breaking saved me from a collision with that police van. Surely the volume of traffic in the morning rush warrants a traffic police presence at the major intersections, which are so often the scene of gruesome accidents. Motorists, please look both ways before crossing, even with the green light in your favour.

Science vs cancer
sophisticated piece of science and engineering has found a home in Faure, and will be of huge benefit to those tasked with the diagnosis of cancer.
iThemba Labs and NTP Radioisotopes officially unveiled the Siemens 11-MeV cyclotron – a particle accelerator that sends charged atomic and subatomic particles on a blazing radioactive roller-coaster ride – at iThemba Labs in Faure on 19 October. The cyclotron will produce enough of a compound called 18F-FDG to meet the demand of the two cancer diagnostic centres in the Western Cape for the next 15 to 20 years. Before this, the centres were forced to share the yield of a cyclotron with other groups, and sometimes had to draw stock from Gauteng. Termed a “radiopharmaceutical”, 18F-FDG is needed for scans using a technique known as positron emission tomography–computed tomography (PET–CT); the compound is injected into a patient, and the scanner traces its path through the person’s body. Among others, the technique is greatly useful in finding tumours. iThemba Labs, a facility forming part of the Na-
tional Research Foundation, together with NTP, part of the South African Nuclear Energy Corporation (Necsa), had the cyclotron installed and ready to rumble in September. One of the two facilities to benefit is the PET–CT Centre at Tygerberg Hospital. The facility, launched in April, serves patients from Tygerberg, Groote Schuur and Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospitals. The other facility is the Cape PET–CT Centre at Panorama Medical Centre. The diagnostic service, offered to more than 10 people a day, is critically reliant on 18F-FDG. “We are pleased to be able to assist the medical community and contribute to meeting the needs of patients,” says Dr Gillian Arendse, manager of community interaction and training at iThemba. And it’s come at a pivotal time. Quoting Dr Gro Harlem Brundtland, director-general of the World Health Organization, Arendse says: “The global burden of cancer continues to increase. In the year 2000, 5,3 million men and 4,7 million women developed a malignant tumour, and 6,2 million died from the disease. The number of new cases is expected to reach 15 million by 2020.”
Dr Zeblon Vilakazi (director of iThemba Labs) cuts the ribbon during the unveiling of the new cyclotron as Phumzile Tshelane (CEO of Necsa), standing to the left, looks on.
Lord Charles ball brings in big bucks for charity The seventh Lord Charles Hotel Charity Ball raised a phenomenal R125 000 for those in need – the biggest amount ever generated by the event. The money is to be divided between two local charities, the Imibala Trust Sponsor-a-Child project and the Erinvale Care and Help Organisation (ECHO). The charity ball – which incorporates an auction – was first held in 2005. Generously contributing to each event since then, all of the Somerset West hotel’s service providers deliver their products or services at cost price, thereby maximising the amount donated to good causes. “Last year, in spite of the tough economy, the charity ball raised R106 000,” says Angela Jacobson, sales and marketing manager for the NH Lord Charles and Plettenberg Bay hotels. Among the items that fetched the highest prices were: a painting of former president Nelson Mandela, which sold for R36 000; a Shaun Pollock cricket bat, for R5 500; and a Marieke Prinsloo-Rowe sculpture, for R4 000. At the official hand-over of proceeds, ECHO representative Lynette Pullen said the money would be used for workshops for students and also for toiletry packs for the aged in the community. ECHO currently supports 22 tertiary-level students.
Seen here (from left) are Mariette de Villiers (Imibala Trust), Angela Jacobson (NH Hotels SA sales and marketing manager), Lynette Pullen (ECHO), Sonia Leibrandt (Imibala Trust), Adrienne Fromage (Lord Charles procurement manager), Serge Foulon (NH Hotels SA managing director) and Jaco du Plooy (Lord Charles revenue manager). “ECHO’s main focus is on education, with the spotlight on our ECHO Development Programme (EDP),” said Pullen. Imibala Trust Sponsor-a-Child administrator Mariette de Villiers said the Lord Charles has supported children through the Sponsor-a-Child programme for several years. A total of 470 sponsorships have resulted from this, and there are some children who have been sponsored for the last four years. “This year the R62 500 raised will sponsor 81 primary school children
and six high school children,” said De Villiers. Serge Foulon, managing director of the Lord Charles and Plettenberg Bay hotels, says NH Hotels International and the Lord Charles are very proud to contribute towards the education and the future of young South Africans. “To be able to give a contribution of R125 000 towards our two main charity organisations – ECHO and Imibala – is truly incredible. I am also very proud of the hard work of the team that made this event possible.”

Daar’s ’n ou in my aarbei smoothie: “My hart behoort aan jou, aan jou..” Die woorde draai soos ’n lied in my kop.

Zimbabwe, Warm Heart, Ugly Face: This is the traumatic story of hyperinflation and the debilitating consequences it had for the people of Zimbabwe. It starts with the author’s arrival in the late ’90s in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe’s second largest city and once the industrial heartland of the country – before the violent takeover of the white-owned farms. The author takes the reader through the 10-year period from 2000 to 2009, characterised by centralised control of all facets of life and an economy in free-fall, as well as the desperate measures adopted by ordinary people and the businesses in the community to survive.

A CALL FOR COMPASSIONATE CARE: Western Cape minister of health, Theuns Botha, recently addressed representatives of local hospices and care facilities for the elderly at the World Hospice Day celebrations hosted by Helderberg Hospital in Somerset West. He commended the attitude of compassion so evident in the care given by Hospice workers, and called upon all health care employees to embrace this work ethic. According to Botha, 70% of the WC health budget is spent on preventable diseases and a healthier society in future requires a willingness on the part of individuals to make important lifestyle changes. But his department is also determined to improve the way clinic staff treat patients and he called for a behavioural change amongst professionals in this regard. “We cannot change the illness, but we can change the way you are treated,” he said. “Facilities, medicine and equipment alone are not enough; the human factor is of vital importance.” Here (from left) are Martin Lund (chairman of Helderberg Hospice), Dr Liz Gwyther (CEO of Hospice Palliative Care Association of SA (HPCA)), Zodwa Sithole (HPCA Kwazulu-Natal), Minister Theuns Botha and Elizabeth Scrimgeour (Drakenstein Hospice). Seen here, from the left, are Sonette Hayes, Sally-Anne Dicks, Nicky Droomer, Natasja Mitchell, Sheldene Toogood, Mandy Baltaretu, Alain Du Four (MD of Skinceuticals), Jonathan Toogood, Mia Valentine and Renee Campbell.
The six patients, who could not afford private health care, had already been on a waiting list for eye surgery. Ophthalmologist Dr Paul Keet took time from his busy schedule to do the operations. Keet says the aim of the project is to create awareness among patients. “This is an annual project organised by the Ophthalmological Society of South Africa,” he elaborates, “who approached us and asked
us to volunteer our time and to do these operations.” Somerset Surgery practice manager Sheldene Toogood says the day clinic was opened three years ago. “We supplied the theatre time for these operations to thank the community for supporting us throughout these three years,” she says. Toogood says Somerset Surgery is a registered day clinic with two surgical theatres, and that most types of day-case surgery can be accommodated in this very conveniently located, state-of-the-art facility. Southern Africa’s top slimmer chosen
GroundCrew DM 62011
Cambridge Weight Plan SA, a Strand-based company, held a lavish gala evening to announce the Southern African Slimmer of the Year 2012 on 13 October at Emperors Palace in Johannesburg. The event was a celebration for all who had reached their goals and transformed their bodies and health for the better, but the top award went to Odette van der Haar, the August 2012 slimmer of the month winner. The slimmer of the year was chosen from a group of nominees made up of slimmer-ofthe-month winners, as well as slimmers who were nominated by their consultants for having shown a significant change in weight and lifestyle through following their weight plan. On the night the nominees’ consultants were given the opportunity to motivate why their client should be the slimmer of the year, and after the judges chose the top three they got to share their personal journeys with the audience, who then voted for the winner. Odette clearly struck a nerve with the audience and walked away with the welldeserved honour; the results were clear for everyone to see. Her journey began more than a year ago, when the scale read a dangerous 112 kg, but thanks to a well-spotted Groupon voucher, sheer determination and the support of loved ones, she now weighs a healthy 65 kg. As part of her award, Cambridge Weight Plan SA will send Odette and her consultant, Lusel Gumanska, to the UK in November to represent Southern Africa at the International Slimmer of the Year event.

Veteran Valiant back at Bertie’s Moorings
BLAAUWKLIPPEN: FEES VIR DIE FAMILIE
Veteran singer Valiant Swart will return to the stage at Bertie’s Moorings in Gordon’s Bay this weekend, after an absence of several months. Taking some time out from a gruelling touring schedule that has seen him travelling to all corners of SA, Valiant is currently spending a few weeks playing gigs in and around his native Stellenbosch, before hitting the road again for yet another spate of performances
in other provinces. Aside from strumming and singing in a vast variety of locations – from Loeriesfontein in the Namakwaland to the Sun City Superbowl (performing in front of 30 000 people over two weekends) – he has also kept himself busy writing his regular magazine columns, doing session work in the studio and composing songs for a new album, planned for release next year. Joining Valiant at the Bertie’s gig will be his old guitar cohort Basson Laubscher. Apart from his work with the legendary Zinkplaat and numerous other blues based projects, Basson has been the regular lead guitarist in Valiant’s band for the past seven years. The duo have performed together at Bertie’s numerous times, and each time has been a blast. Sunday’s performance is sure to be yet another fine display of blues and folk-rock by two seasoned muso’s. It starts at 18:00 and entrance is free.

Getting to grips with the future of the economy
From start to finish
his week’s article is for those starting their working lives and for those ending their working lives.
Benjamin Franklin, one of America’s founding fathers, once said, “Drive thy business. Let it not drive thee.” A career can make you comfortable, but owning a successful business builds wealth. The average career person effectively sells his or her time and knowledge in exchange for financial reward. This is extremely limiting in that you only have so much time to sell. Especially if you consider all the time you initially “invest” in gaining the knowledge. For anyone in this position it is essential to provide adequately for the time in their lives when they will no longer be able to sell their skills. When this time comes they should not view this in a negative light, but rather as a time to focus on other things. Distinguish clearly between who you are and what you do for a living. You are not a lawyer or a doctor, you only practise law or medicine. When you end your career you simply stop practising – your life has not ended with your career. Retirement is not society telling you that you’re no longer of any value, but rather giving you the financial freedom of your time. I am of course assuming you are in the 5% of South African’s who will be able to retire financially independent. For those starting their working lives, keep Benjamin’s advice in mind. If your plan is to create wealth, then you will need to build a business that is independent of yourself. By do-
ing this you create something of value, something that can be sold or provide you with an ongoing income, without you having to sell your time. This is financial freedom. As a career person you are only likely to achieve this goal near the end of your career through many years of saving, while the entrepreneur or business owner may achieve this objective early in their working lives by simply taking a chance. The future for successful young South Africans lies in their entrepreneurial abilities, not their future career plans.

“To be in business the focus is to stay in business”, was nog ’n aanhaling waarop hy klem gelê het.
NEW RECRUIT: First National Bank is pleased to introduce the brand new manager of its Strand branch, Abrie van Zyl, to all its customers in the Helderberg. “Please feel free to visit the branch in your own time to get to know one another,” a spokesperson says. “Abrie will be pleased to be of service.”
The Gordon’s Bay Business Forum will host an economic presentation by Nicky Weimar, senior economist of the Nedbank Group. On Wednesday 14 November at the Villa Via Hotel in Gordon’s Bay, Weimar will share her knowledge and experience as well as provide a glimpse into what can be expected from the economy in years to come. If you are concerned and serious about your financial future – whether you are a business owner or a stayat-home parent – this is an opportunity not to be missed. The cost of R185 per person includes a three-course meal, served with wine on the table. Seats are limited and bookings essential. Contact Cathy at Leapfrog on 021 856 1535 or at email@example.com. Heavy weather disrupts fishing T his past weekend was not conducive to shore or boat angling due to the strong winds and rough seas.
According to some of the local “manne” there was also an unusual current reported by boat anglers and shore anglers wading to deeper reefs. One of the local regulars, Jurie van Niekerk, braved the weather to fish at some of his usual venues for kob. He says although the current was strong and the water cold, he fished Verleëbank using a 6/0 hook and a kob trace, but was rewarded with a 3,1 kg dassie (blacktail) and 2,5 kg white stumpnose. He was using a float to keep the hook suspended in the current. Most older fishermen believe that when a large white stumpnose is bagged, it’s a “go-home fish” and a sign of colder water. I personally believe a good-sized white stump is one of the preferred braai fish, with a good texture and pure white meat. Adiel Frieselaar reports that there have been good catches of kob, when the weather permitted, further along the coast. He says his best kob was 13 kg, caught from Struis-
baai Plaat on Saturday. Adiel caught several kob here of between 3 and 13 kg; he says the big fish was taken on live bait at “Die Mond” outlet. Now that the galjoen season has closed, the news about the recent Windjammer competition, held just before the close of the season, has come to light. Anglers report that the best galjoen of the
day was a massive galjoen of 6,1 kg, caught by Baasie Basson. Two other galjoen were caught by Tertius Krynauw, both weighing 2,5 kg. It is alleged that both anglers made their catches by using red bait spiced with a mixture of a few drops of aniseed oil and a drop of Mercurochrome. This mix was apparently the same “muti” that the legendary late Willie Morries used to doctor some of his red bait. The Cape Boat and Skiboat Club’s deepsea competition commenced on Wednesday, and it appears that the weather could allow fishing in the deep on Thursday, Friday and Saturday this week. There are four provincial teams and eight club teams taking part in the competition. Good news for deep-sea anglers is that there have been reports of three yellowfin tuna caught last week 30 miles West of Cape Point. For all your reel repairs and services, contact Art on 0 021 854 3831 Send your fishing news and photos to 2 email@example.com

Sensei Niel van Zyl (left) with ninth-dan Kiyoshi Yonemoto sensei from Japan, one of the top Goju Ryu masters in the world.
Japanese master visits Strand dojo Ninth-dan Kiyoshi Yonemoto sensei from Japan, one of the top Goju Ryu masters in the world, recently visited the African continent and the Helderberg for the first time. He was hosted by sensei Niel van Zyl and sensei Pietman Faasen of the Seiki Kan dojo, based at Hendrik Louw Primary School in Strand. Yonemoto sensei, a shiatsu and acupuncture practitioner by profession, studied under the tutelage of the late grandmaster Sosui Ichikawa (10th dan). He teaches the “connection” between kata (form) and kumite (fighting), as well as the meaning of the kata, how to apply it and how to use it effectively in hand-to-hand combat. “Most Goju Ryu – meaning ‘hard-soft way’ – schools put the emphasis on the ‘go’ part of goju,” Yonemoto says. “I think the secret of goju is hidden in the ‘ju’ – this is the softer part of goju.” He has never claimed his karate is better than that of any other school, saying his way is “not better, only a bit different”. He studied with grandmaster Ichikawa for 34 years, but says he is not Ichikawa sensei’s successor as each person is original. “My teacher was a martial arts genius, therefore no one can truly be his successor.” Sensei Niel van Zyl, Seiki Kan chief instructor, first met Yonemoto sensei during 1993 in England. “Yonemoto changed my perceptions about karate profoundly,” Van Zyl says. “I am obliged to him as, he opened his home and his dojo to me and my students. “It was always my dream to bring him to Africa, and after many trips to Japan and 19 years later, he conceded and agreed to come. “Without the support of my top student – Pietman Faasen, a very serious and compassionate martial artist in his own right – this dream would not have materialised,” Van Zyl adds. Anyone interested in practising karate – be they beginners or experienced karateka – may contact sensei Niel on 082 877 5335 or sensei Jackie on 083 997 4765.
Southey’s ton puts Helderberg on top Helderberg scored an impressive 264/9 in the first innings of their match against Wynberg on Saturday. Wynberg had only seven overs remaining on day one and were 35/0 at stumps. The match started at 14:00 due to a wet pitch from the heavy rain the night before. Captain Vincent Castle lost the toss and was asked to bat. Helderberg got off to a quick start but the sticky pitch proved difficult to bat on, and they were soon in trouble on 51/5. Newcomer Stephen Southey (111*) and Mario Solomons (34) then came together and steadied the innings. By tea they had brought the score to 81/5. Solomons lost his wicket just after tea, which saw evergreen Adrian van Reenen come to the crease. Together with Southey, he took the attack to the Wynberg bowlers. The two batsmen produced a mixture of clean, selective cricket shots and power hitting that entertained their supporters and left the fielding side looking on in amazement. Van Reenen was eventually caught on the boundary for 60 (four fours and five sixes), while Southey continued to play shots at will. He eventually reached his century in the 59th over and ended the innings on a brilliant 111 not out.

Helderberg clubs shine at WP Rugby Awards
ast Wednesday night the Western Province Rugby Awards were held at Kelvin Grove in Newlands, and what a glitzy occasion it turned out to be.
Pirates scalp Philippi Angels After their poor performance last week, Pirates fought back with a vengeance to beat the newly promoted Philippi Angels on Saturday. Despite the wet conditions, Pirates proved too strong for the Angels. Aggressive batting early on in the game allowed Pirates to open up a considerable lead, with home runs by Garth Uys, Justin Smith, Brad de Waal and Darren Chalmers. This was backed up with a strong pitching effort by Brad de Waal which gave Pirates a chance to use some of their less experienced players a chance to pitch. With the rain becoming too heavy and the requirements for a legal game being met, the game was ended with Pirates 12–3 ahead. The second team missed out on their chance to capitalise on the
young Goodwood Academy team in their match played at home on Saturday, and lost their match 6–3. The home team failed to take advantage of Goodwood’s slow pitchers early on and, despite a three-run homer by Byron Trichardt and a solid pitching performance by Nicolas van Loggerenberg, Goodwood were able to constantly edge in runs and win the game. Both Pirates teams are in action again this Saturday at Radloff Park at 13:00 and 15:15 respectively. Congratulations go out to Pirates players Nicolas van Loggerenberg and Myles van Heerden, who have been selected as finalists for junior sportsman of the year at the Cape Town City District Sports and Recreation Awards evening. The winners of this coveted award will be announced later this year.
Hoërskool Strand wys hul staal as gholfkampioene stryd al hoe feller begin woed.
Somerset West–Gugulethu match evenly poised Somerset West will have to draw on all their resources if they want to win their first two-day match of the season against Gugulethu, which resumes in Gugulethu on Saturday. Gugulethu, who are chasing a total of 197, are currently 63 runs behind Somerset West with five firstinnings wickets remaining. When Somerset West arrived at Gugulethu Cricket Club on Saturday morning they expecting to find unfit playing conditions due to the heavy rain on Friday. However, the field and pitch were in fairly good condition, and the starting time was only delayed by 35 minutes.

WP players were all in attendance to add spice to the evening, and clubs were rewarded for their efforts during the 2012 season. Of the 32 Saturday leagues in the union, 11 were won by Helderberg clubs. That is one third of the union’s trophies. Congratulations to Strand RFC, which also won the award for most disciplined club of the year. An award that really baffled many was the club player of the year, awarded to Alconray Botha of Tygerberg. That one player out of nearly 18 000 across the Cape could be singled out is ludicrous. On what criteria was this player selected? Whatever the answer, I’m sure each club has at least five play-
tive inputs cover the needs of the club? Are we ahead of those around us? Are we innovative and inspirational? Do we analyse our own contribution, commitment and dedication on a regular basis? Does our enthusiasm rub off on the rest of the members? Is our communication with the rest of the club perfect? Do we still have the best man in each job? How far away are we from achieving our goals? Club administrators should realise that the business of running a club does not have an off-season. Good luck!
ers who fulfil those criteria. Who made up the selection panel? Did they watch each and every club play at least once this season? Furthermore why were clubs not granted the opportunity to submit nominations? These are but a few questions that come to mind, and I strongly suggest that the union either scrap this award entirely or let each division have a club player of the year voted for by the clubs in that league. The club rugby season has ended, so what now? It’s very important that clubs utilise the next few months (before the start of the summer holiday season) to plan ahead for the next season. Club committee members must take a hard look at themselves and the club structure, and should ask themselves the following questions. Have we become complacent? Do we still understand and respect the duties of each administrator? Do our collec-
