THE new owners of South Fork Superette in the Strand received an unfriendly welcome to the neighbourhood when armed robbers struck last week. The incident happened last Friday at about 10:00, when Jibon Khan was alone in the store. His brother Jony, who rushed to the scene after he heard about the robbery, explains that a group of armed men ambushed the shop. “My brother was standing over there,” he says, pointing to the fridges. “About five men, some with guns and some with knives, came in. They wanted money. They pushed my brother into the toilet at the back and helped themselves.” Jony says one of the men stabbed his brother in the back before they left him in

the toilet to rob the shop. The men then took money from the cash register, as well as cigarettes, airtime worth R2 500, and toiletries such as soap, deodorant and shampoo from the shelves. Jony and his brother are originally from Bangladesh, and have been living here for about two years. He says they took over the store on 5 January, and this is the first time they have been robbed. “I don’t know what to say or how to feel about it. My brother is still very scared and jumpy.” After the men left, the police were called to the scene. According to the police report, one man had a gun and two others had knives. A case of robbery is being investigated. Anybody who can help solve the crime is urged to phone the police on 021 854 9100.

GORDON S BAY The sparkle is gone: The illuminated snowflake in Gordon s Bay, forming part of the decor of the recently established Winter Wonderland tourism initiative, was reported stolen on Monday. The light was put up in December as a teaser ahead of Winter Wonderland, to be held in June this year. Margot Paulsen, convenor of the initiative, says the 1,8 m light was put up by three people using a crane. She contacted the municipality after she noticed it was gone, but they could not help explain the disappearance. Paulsen says one snowflake is manufactured at a cost of R1 200, and the theft is a great loss to the organisers as they are reliant on the generosity of residents and businesses. 0 Margot Paulsen on 082 467 3060 if you can help find the missing light.

NEWS SUMMARY RESIDENTS of the Somerset West Night Shelter protested against management on Monday after, they claimed, they were made to leave their rooms without prior notice, and returned to find the rules had changed. During a meeting held last week, the residents say, they were asked to empty their cupboards of clothes and bedding ahead of cleaning scheduled to take place this Wednesday. But they claim they were caught by surprise when the cleaning operation started on Monday. “We all had to leave the premises, even the sick ones,” says Rodney Abrahams, who has been living there for the past three months.– Page 4 A BUFFALO attack six months ago did not stop him from participating in the Cape Argus Pick n Pay Cycle Tour for the 11th time. In September last year, Ryno Magson (42) from Somerset West was attacked by a buffalo in the Rooihoek campsite in the Baviaanskloof. His lungs, ribs and kidneys were severely damaged. Ryno healed remarkably, though, and he was able to get on a bike in December to start training. It was a very emotional experience when he crossed the finish line – for him and the friends and family who supported him on the day. He completed the race in 3 hours, 47 minutes. – Page 5

Inwoners betoog by skuiling JAMEY THOMAS

Beware the crayfish con A SOMERSET West shopper was caught in a fishy scam when she bought a box of “crayfish tails” out of a car’s boot in a parking lot. D Wallis says she was approached by a man offering 15 crayfish tails for R150 in the parking lot behind Jordan Shoes Factory Shop last Thursday. “This seemed a bargain, so I went to look at them. He and two other men were selling boxes of crayfish tails, calamari, salmon, sole, et cetera. from the boot of his car.” Wallis says she asked the sellers how she could be sure she was buying

real crayfish tails. They opened one of the boxes and showed her individually wrapped blue plastic packages shaped like sausages, all the while assuring her that the product was legitimate. After telling the men she’d lay a charge of fraud if they were conning her, she handed over her money. “Once at home I defrosted one of the packages and found that, although fresh, it was minced fish (probably hake), compressed into the sausage shape and frozen. There were also only 12 packages, and not

My oefening vir die toer was ook op my eie pas, soos dit vir my gemaklik was.”

Skool steeds in spervuur JAMEY THOMAS

Child Welfare evicted NIKITA SYLVESTER

THE Child Welfare office in Macassar seems to have lost the battle to keep its doors open. The office received an eviction notice on Tuesday, and it’ll have to leave within 30 days of that. The Macassar office of the Helderberg branch of Child Welfare South Africa has operated in this residential area for six years. But neighbours have for the past two years been campaigning for its eviction. The organisation applied in late 2010 to the City of Cape Town to rezone the single-residential building, situated in a cul de sac in Monaco Crescent, from which it runs. Cheryl Walters, director of the City’s Planning and Building Development Management Department, says the application was advertised, and seven of the eight homeowners in the cul de sac objected with a signed petition. The residents in question don’t feel the area is suitable for an organisation such as Child Welfare. With the influx of people, they claimed their properties were being used as toilets, and complained of noise pollution and traffic and parking problems. “We believe that a business of such nature should be run in a CBD,” wrote the residents in their petition letter. So it was that the organisation’s application for rezoning was refused last year . Upon receiving the refusal letter in February 2012, Child Welfare had 21 days to appeal. Desmond Timm, chairperson of the Helderberg branch of Child Welfare South Africa, submitted a

He explains that, despite the appeal, the organisation is still required to find alternative accommodation and cease all activities.

‘We have no idea what to do. We have been left destitute.’ “We have no idea what to do. We have been left destitute, and just hope that the community will support us in our plight,” says Timm. Olivia Adams, senior social worker at the Macassar office, says the branch is well established in the area; it is in a central loca-

tion and easily accessible by those in need of its services. “We are not a business, but a non-profit community organisation. We don’t buy children!” She argues that the office’s clients hardly ever visit the office in large noisy groups; they usually go individually, by appointment, as they have personal matters to address, she says. Adams says, if worst comes to worst, one option would be to find a spot at the Somerset West Child Welfare office. “Most of our clients would have to make use of public transport to get there. This would cost them a lot of money. The Macassar community will suffer.” Indeed, many in the community feel strongly about the impending move. Child Welfare has been flooded with dismayed letters from Macassar residents, as well as letters of support from the local police and CPF.

Somerset West cries foul

Expect delays

HEALTH fears are being raised over the expanding minefield of filth and refuse besmirching Somerset West’s CBD. Last Friday (9 March) DistrictMail took a look at the area around the taxi rank and found that the stormwater channel alongside the Church Street Methodist Church – in which vagrants have been living for years – is now being used as a toilet and rubbish dump. The cement slabs initially used to cover the channel have been removed, while litter, rotten fruit and vegetables, and human faeces now occupy the channel. Beatrice Wiltshire, a Somerset West resi-

dent who was recently accompanied by an armed guard on her tour of the area, is disgusted. “It is unpleasant to see, smell and endure these conditions – which pose a serious health hazard,” she says. Vagrants apparently started to use the street as a toilet when a required fee of R1 was initiated at the public toilets at the old taxi rank. The fee was recently stopped by Inyameko Trading, contracted by the municipality to maintain the toilets. “The toilets are open 24–7 at no charge, but still some of the vagrants prefer using any open space or corner, especially at night,” says Sicelo Ofisi, one of the workers on toilet duty. Taxi rank master Daniel Roberts says the toilets and area were in a worse condition before Inyameko Trading took charge. “It is disgusting to work in an area where vagrants are having sex, using drugs and defecating,” says Roberts. Stuart Pringle, chairperson of Subcouncil 8, says he’s aware of the deplorable situation. “The City currently conducts daily cleaning operations in the CBD, and in addition the City’s Law Enforcement officers and the In-

District Robotic war and peace

Rugby wins at Morkel Stadium CONGRATULATIONS to the organisers of the inaugural Community Day held at the Charles Morkel Stadium on Saturday. The event included the longawaited match between a Sports Foundation team and Helderberg Rugby Club’s first team, as well as a potjiekos competition and a primary schools sevens tournament. Hundreds of rugby fans, old and young and from all walks of life, poured into the grounds to watch this highly anticipated match. A highlight for many of the fans was the match-up between the famous Rose brothers from the Strand. Earl made a guest appearance for the Sports Foundation team, while his younger brother Jody is playing for Helderberg this season. What a showdown it proved to be, with Jody scoring all 13 points for Helderberg (a try, conversion and two penalties), and Earl driving home three penalties. Supporters for both teams were well behaved and enjoyed the historic rugby match as it unfolded in front of them. If ever there was proof that sport could unite communities, well this was it.

SINCE Monday 20 February, we have had to sit in heavy traffic due to a new robot that was installed on the corner of Beach Road and the R44. This robot is totally unnecessary as the lane coming from Beach Road flows into the R44 with a totally separate lane, and does not disturb approaching traffic. There have never been any problems on this road, and never this heavy traffic. This letter is to establish why a robot was put there, and what the Traffic Department will be doing about the traffic build-up that occurs now and the accidents waiting to happen. I know of several people who have sent letters to the Traffic Department to complain about this. The build-up of traffic is so bad that motorists have decided to ig-

nore the red robot and continue onto the lane flowing into the R44. It is so bad that it is an accident waiting to happen, as motorists now take the second lane, a rightturn lane in the direction of Victoria Road, and use it as a left-turn lane onto the R44, thus creating chaos, confusion, and a build-up at the next robot going towards Somerset Mall. We need some answers here please, as there is chaos every morning. We are now forced to use another road to go toward Somerset Mall, because there is just too much traffic here. It was never like this before the robot. Please help and get some answers about this.

Melissa Whitehead, executive director for Transport, Roads and Stormwater in the City of Cape Town, responds: There has always been a signalised pedestrian crossing across the slip lane. However, there was a fault with the pedestrian signal. The signal was activating every signal cycle instead of only when pedestrians pushed the button. Vehicular traffic was, therefore, stopped far more often than normal, leading to long vehicle queues. The fault was rectified earlier in the week and the Transport Department has had reports from motorists that the situation has now returned to normal. Residents are urged to report traffic signal faults to the Transport Department on 0 0860 001 948.

Bravery I WOULD like to extend a big thankyou to the Gordon’s Bay and Strand police, all the security companies operating in Gordon’s Bay, and all the members of Firlands Farm and Firlands Park Neighbourhood Watch. Thank you for helping us with our security, which was lately severely threatened by criminal elements intruding our homes and properties. Without you all we would have been in big trouble. They all deserve a bravery award.

Farewell, and thank you I HAVE been promoted to join the quality and oversight team at our regional office in Cape Mail, Goodwood. My last day at Somerset West Post Office will be 30 March 2012, and so I take this opportunity to bid you all farewell. Nigel Norvall: looking back on an illustrious life

Nigel Norvall.

WELL-known estate agent principal Nigel Norvall, of Nigel Norvall Properties, died on Friday 9 March. Norvall, a larger-than-life formerZimbabwean farmer, was father to five girls. He started his schooling at Plumtree School, where he won colours for rugby and water polo. Following this, he graduated from Gwebi Agricultural College as he, together with his two brothers, took over the running of the Norvall farms, an enor-

mous farming enterprise, outside Bulawayo, Zimbabwe. He was an outstanding achiever and spent time in the USA after he won a bursary to study agriculture. He brought back innovative ideas, and Norvall farms became a nationfeeding empire. Norvall, described as a natural and confident leader, did his officer training course during the army years and progressed up the ranks from lieuten-

ant to major. Finally, he was offered the rank of lieutenant colonel, which he declined, as the farm required too much attention at that stage. All three Norvall brothers earned their private pilot licences and flew their own planes. As the war years took their toll on the farming community, the Norvall farms were purchased as “model” farms. Nigel Norvall and family moved to Somerset West, where he in-

itially directed a computer software company, and latterly his estate agency. He will be remembered as an absolute gentleman whose word was binding and unshakeable. His sense of humour, albeit somewhat risqué, will be a quality sorely missed by all who dealt with him. Nigel, the man, the husband and the father, will be greatly missed by the girls he has left behind.

“I HAVE the capacity to make a difference in the lives of others in a similar situation,” says 25-year-old Paul Steyn, a Gordon’s Bay resident who lost his leg in an accident at school 12 years ago. At the age of 13, Paul’s foot got caught in the blades of the school lawn mower. After spending six months in a Pretoria hospital, his right leg was amputated just below the knee owing to gangrene. Paul gathered the courage to complete his schooling, and soon realised he had a passion for community work. “I got involved in quite a few community projects and fundraisers, and built up an extensive network of contacts,” he says. Paul went on to establish his own non-

profit organisation, The Paul Steyn Foundation, to raise funds for deserving people who can’t afford prosthetic limbs, and to create awareness of the plight of those who have lost a limb. He also started his own website, where people who have lost a limb can share experiences, ask relevant questions, support one another and discuss any problem they might be facing. “Before I received a prosthetic leg as part of my settlement from the Department of Education in 2005, I made use of crutches,” says Paul. “I did receive a donation for an artificial leg, but the fit was wrong and was of no use to me. “But I regard myself as lucky. A person on a low income or with no medical aid – like me – would never be able to afford the cost of a prosthetic limb.” Funds are raised through corporate sponsors and donations from individuals, but Paul feels that, since he is the founder of the organisation, he has to do his bit as well. Therefore, to demonstrate the mobility that his prosthesis allows him and can afford to others, Paul arranges fundraising walks on a regular basis. Paul recently completed a walk from Montagu to Cape Town. He left Montagu at the start of February, making his way past Robertson, Worcester, Ceres, Wolseley, Tulbagh, Riebeeck Kasteel, Malmesbury, Philadelphia, Melkbosstrand and Bloubergstrand, finally getting to Cape Town after 308,7 km of walking. He managed to raise R10 000. “During the next walk I plan to raise an amount equivalent to 10 prosthetic limbs – which cost between R30 000 and R80 000 each,” he says. Paul’s next fundraising walk will take place in July; he’ll make his way from Port Elizabeth to Cape Town.

Mediclinic gets a facelift

Invasive plant species might negatively impact Antarctica s ecosystems. ble, with most regions of the continent cooling at first and then warming as the ozone hole recovers. Some areas of the peninsula will continue to warm. “By keeping current climate data and climate change forecasts in mind, our analyses reveal that the likelihood is high that many foreign species will be able to establish and become invasive, both now and within the next 100 years,” Chown explains. “With climate change, areas such as the Antarctic Peninsula, Ross Sea and the East Antarctic coastal regions will become highrisk areas because it is easier for plants to survive and establish on ice-free ground in these sectors. “We are convinced that this study will provide the explicit evidence required for future management decisions aimed at conserving Antarctica,” Chown concludes.

MEDICLINIC Stellenbosch is set for a full-scale revamp, starting in the month of March. During this project the entire hospital will be rejuvenated and the internal look refreshed; some equipment will also be replaced. All possible precautions will be taken to ensure minimum discomfort to patients, a hospital spokesperson assures. “We guarantee that the daily flow of activities at Mediclinic Stellenbosch will not be interrupted by this project, and we apologise for any inconvenience caused,” says hospital manager Carol van Zyl. The upgrade will take place in several phases, the first of which was scheduled to start in the labour ward early this month. Among other changes, the labour rooms will each receive their own private bathroom. Births at the hospital will not be influenced by this project as arrangements have been made to temporarily move the labour rooms and all their equipment. The next phase will be announced in due course; Mediclinic Stellenbosch looks forward to the opening of its new 10-bed day ward at the end of the project in September 2013. You can contact the hospital’s client service manager on 0 021 861 2160 to find out more about the project.

Traffic trouble in Irene Avenue THE City of Cape Town is laying a new stormwater pipeline in Irene Avenue, Somerset West. The work will entail some disruption to traffic, the City warns. The affected stretch of Irene Avenue runs from Parel Valley Road up to the Geelsloot. Rehabilitation work will also be done on this section; construction started last week and is expected to last eight weeks. During the work Irene Avenue will be limited to one-way traffic. Part of the thoroughfare will be closed for the duration.

Signage indicating detour routes will be placed, but regular road users are asked to avoid the affected section. “The construction work to be undertaken is essential, and will unfortunately cause inconvenience and disruption,” a spokesperson says. “The City apologises for the inconvenience caused, and we thank residents in the area for their cooperation and patience.” For emergencies or general enquiries, contact Irafaan Sambo (Gibb Engineering and Science) on 0 073 513 7861.

Take a walk with Sir Richard’s Ghost AUTHOR, broadcaster and adventure journalist Patricia Glyn will present an inspirational talk, Footing with Sir Richard’s Ghost, next Friday at Bontevlei Farm. Glyn has walked 500 km through Zimbabwe to raise funds for animals left desperate by political turmoil. She has climbed Kilimanjaro and Aconcagua, and documented the Discovery Everest expedition. In 2005 Glyn walked from Durban to the Victoria Falls in the footsteps of her ancestor, Sir Richard Glyn, who in 1863 made the hazardous

International artists demonstrate THE Western Cape Watercolour Group’s next monthly meeting takes place on Saturday 17 March at 14:00 in the Library hall in Somerset West. Local watercolour artist Dan du Toit will show a unique video presentation of world-class watercolourists demonstrating their expertise. “The artists in the presentation demonstrate their

mastery of the watercolour medium with confident brush strokes,” says Dan, “and give insight into the way they relate their artistic vision of subject matter onto the paper, portraying the essence of the landscape beyond the obvious to create an impressionistic work of art.” The meeting and demonstration are open to all. The entry fee, which includes refreshments, is R10 for members and R20 for visitors. For more information phone Diane White on 0 021 851 2520.

A torte worth the trouble Susina Jooste is the director for academic development at the Private Hotel School and can be contacted on 021 881 3792. SACHER torte is one of the world’s bestknown classical tortes. It is named after the Sacher Hotel in Vienna, where it was created and is still served today. It is a dense chocolate cake in which much of the flour is replaced by ground toasted almonds, and it is glazed with apricot jam and coated with hard ganache. Sacher torte with chocolate ganache Sacher cake 100 g butter 70 g castor sugar 3 egg yolks 1 whole egg 100 g chocolate, melted 3 egg whites 30 g castor sugar 30 g cake flour, sifted 5 ml baking powder 100 g almond, toasted and ground 100 g smooth apricot jam

Hard ganache 100 g cream 200 g chocolate

Decoration Marzipan “S” discs Method ) Preheat oven to 180 °C; grease the sides of 4 x 12 cm or 2 x 20 cm cake pans and line with parchment paper. ) Cream the butter with sugar until light and fluffy. Gradually add the egg yolks and whole eggs, mixing well after each addition. ) Add warm, melted chocolate all at once and incorporate immediately. ) Whip egg whites and sugar to soft-peak stage. Gradually fold one third of meringue into the creamed mixture. ) Sift flour and baking powder together and combine with the nuts. Gradually fold the batter, meringue and flour together in three batches. ) Spread the batter evenly into the cake pans with the back of a spoon or an offset spatula. Bake until the cake is puffed and springs back when gently pressed (about 30 to 40 minutes). Remove from the oven and let it cool down on a wire rack. ) Slice the cake horizontally in half and spread with apricot jam. Seal and coat the top and sides with jam. ) Glaze with melted hard ganache and re-

frigerate until set and firm. ) Score into 12 portions. Garnish with marzipan or white chocolate discs, or write the word “Sacher” on each slice.

Chocolate ganache is a mixture of chocolate and cream. The ratio of chocolate to cream determines the consistency of the ganache when it is cool, and varies widely. A basic dark ganache for glazing cakes such at the Sacher torte consists of 2 parts of chocolate to 1 part of cream by weight. A much lighter ganache can be made to fill cakes with a mousse-like consistency. By using 2 parts of cream to 1 part of chocolate by weight, the ganache can be whipped after it is fully chilled. Whipping will incorporate air and stiffen the mixture, resulting in a light chocolate cream that can be used as a filling for a Black Forest cake. Couverture is a mixture of fat (cacao butter) and solids (cacao mass, sugar and milk powder) worked together to create a smooth, homogeneous mass. Between 30% and 40% cacao butter is used. The more cacao butter a couverture has, the lower its viscosity is and the more expensive it will be. Couverture must be tempered when used to obtain the best results. Cacao powder is yielded by the finelyground, pressed cake left after the cacao butter has been pressed out of the cacao mass. White chocolate consists of cacao butter,

sugar and milk solids. It is, strictly speaking, not a chocolate since it does not contain chocolate mass. Baker’s chocolate is also referred to as coating chocolate or chocolate glaze. It is similar to couverture, except the cacao butter has been replaced with another type of fat, usually vegetable oil. This is easier to use since it does not have to be tempered. General rules Chocolate or couverture should always be cut into small pieces before melting. Use a serrated knife. By cutting the chocolate into small pieces, a collectively larger surface area is exposed to the heat source. Before melting, make sure the stainless steel bowl is very clean and dry. A water bath with a temperature of around 50 °C works best to melt chocolate. No moisture of any kind should ever come into contact with chocolate, since it will cause the chocolate to seize – making it useless. Gently stir (massage) the chocolate until all of it has melted, then remove from the heat.

Plasma or LCD? TVs demystified SHOULD you invest in a plasma television or buy an LCD screen? The website offers the following advice: When choosing between LCD and plasma TVs, you’re actually selecting between two competing technologies, both of which achieve similar features (such as bright, crystal-clear images and saturated colours) and come in similar packages (3,5- to 5-inch depth flat-screen casing). To complicate matters further, price and size are rapidly becoming non-issues, as LCDs are now being made in larger sizes, and at prices competitive with plasma TVs. Despite all these similarities, these

technologies differ in how they process and display incoming signals. ) Plasma flat screens consist of hundreds of thousands of individual pixel cells, which allow electric pulses (stemming from electrodes) to excite rare natural gases, usually xenon and neon, causing them to glow and produce light. This light illuminates the proper balance of red, green, or blue phosphors contained in each cell, displaying the required colour combination. Each pixel cell is essentially a microscopic fluorescent lightbulb, receiving instruction from software contained on the rear silicon board. ) Whether spread across a flat-panel

screen or placed in the heart of a projector, all LCD displays come from the same technological background. A matrix of thin-film transistors supplies voltage to liquid crystal–filled cells sandwiched between two sheets of glass. Hit with an electrical charge, the crystals untwist to filter white light generated by a lamp behind the screen (for flat-panel TVs) or one projecting through a small LCD chip (for projection TVs). LCD monitors reproduce colours through a process of subtraction: they block out particular colour wavelengths from the spectrum of white light until they’re left with just the right colour.

LED TVs are a new form of LCD television. ) Plasma technology has the better picture quality in normal to low room-lighting conditions, and is better in four out of five picture-quality categories. LCD TVs are great for sunroom-type environments. Also, LCD monitors are generally better for public displays, due to the bright room-light environment. –reviewer: Phil Conner

The Somerset West Music Society’s next concert, Amor hai Vinto, explores the idea that the most profound moments in life and love are those where seemingly contradictory emotions, such as joy and sorrow, pleasure and pain, hope and despair, occur simultaneously – as they inevitably do. Exceptional music from the early and high Baroque periods will be performed by members of the Cape Consort – Lente Louw (soprano), Hans Huyssen (baroque cello) and Andrew Cruickshank (harpsichord). The programme includes instrumental and vocal works by Monteverdi, Frescobaldi, Strozzi, Bach, Handel and Vivaldi, and takes place this Sunday at 16:00 in the Somerset West Library hall. Tickets are available at the door to non-members at R55 for adults and R30 for students. For more information phone Essie Koekemoer on 0 021 856 1847.

Wield your pen and win THE race is on to find South Africa’s best letter writer. The Post Office is inviting pupils up to the age of 15 to take part in the 41st International Letter Writing Competition. The task this year – write a letter to a sports figure you admire, explaining what the Olympics mean to you – coincides with 2012’s biggest sporting spectacular, the Olympic Games. The competition is run annually by the Universal Postal Union (UPU), and the winning entry from each country competes for the title of best letter writer in the world. Each provincial winner will be given R5 000, while their school will be given R15 000. The school with the most entries will win R10 000 – and the national winner, in addition to being entered into the international competition, will get R15 000 for themselves and R25 000 for their school. The Post Offices invests in the competition not only to encourage literacy amongst children, but to create awareness on topical issues that will encourage children to put pen to paper. “It is an essential and fundamental tool to have the ability to read and write,” says Angela Abrahams of the Post Office. “The competition provides a fun and creative way of learning and developing literacy skills.” Entries close on 31 March. Get your entry forms at For more information phone Nancy Moetlo on 0 012 649 6554.

Warming up: Some 125 musicians from 14 schools gathered at Somerset College recently to prepare for the ninth Winelands Orchestral Festival held on Sunday 4 March. A junior orchestra, consisting of primary school pupils, and a senior orchestra for the older students, joined the rehearsal. Ahead of this music teachers at regional schools select, propose and compose musical pieces, which are practised during the weekend by the participants. Dr Tim Nuttall, headmaster of Somerset College, remarks: “I had in mind an image of mountain tributaries tumbling down the rocks to form a river of music in the valley. And what a wonderful repertoire it was, from Tchaikovsky through to Simon and Garfunkel, to funk rock and a resounding homegrown minimalist piece composed in Stellenbosch!” Here Simon Chapman, director of music at Somerset College, conducts the senior orchestra in the chapel at a recent recital.

Can your school do the can-can? THE Collect-a-Can National Schools Competition offers great cash prizes to schools that collect the most cans every month. There are also prizes for schools that collect the most cans throughout the year. “Collect-a-Can strives to build awareness around the recyclability of cans,” says Collect-a-Can spokesperson Zimasa Velaphi. “Our school competitions aim to educate learners to be sensitive, informed and aware of the importance of recycling for the environment, and to demonstrate the economic benefits of recycling. All types of cans – food, beverage, polish, paint and aerosol cans – are recyclable, and can be

sold to Collect-a-Can for cash.” Collect-a-Can’s National Schools Competition runs until October. Subsidiary competitions will include the CAN Craze Competition from June to September, during which pupils will work together to build a creative structure out of 300 or more cans. The Guinness World Record–Attempt Competition, meanwhile, will reward schools with prizes for cans collected in October in a bid to boost collection numbers and beat a world record for collecting the most used cans in one month. The Artistic Expression Competition is set to be introduced at tertiary level, giv-

ing students an opportunity to get involved. Pupils are invited to write to Collect-aCan’s Can Man to suggest prizes and explain what would benefit their schools. Letters can be mailed to The Can Man, PO Box 30500, Kyalami, 1684. Entry forms for the competitions will be made available shortly at all Collect-aCan branches, as well as on the organisation’s website, For more information contact the Collect-a-Can head office on 0 011 466 2939. Painting the town red SIX Grade 10 pupils from Paul Roos Gymnasium, eager to do their bit for the community of Sir Lowry’s Pass, got the chance to help out when they heard about a local project. The lads caught wind of Klaar Gepraat, an initiative run by Duraline, a few weeks back; determined to make a difference, they decided to paint all the low-cost houses in Sir Lowry’s Pass. The boys were put to work and started painting the first house on Thursday 1 March; with teamwork and a little elbow grease, they made life a little better for many. If you’d like to join the fun, contact Lounelle Nortjie of Duraline on 0 021 853 0471 or at 2

Harcourts goes platinum F

OR the fifth year running Harcourts Platinum in Somerset West has been the top Harcourts Office in the Western Cape. At a recent regional awards function held in Cape Town they scooped all the top agent awards, as well as the numberone office in the Western Cape, and another Platinum Award. Says principal Steve Caradoc-Davies: “I’m really proud of the achievements of our team. We’ve enjoyed another 30% increase in business over the past few months, and it’s the result of hard work, dedication, and excellent customer service from our entire team.” A number of agents in Harcourts Platinum received Bronze, Silver, and Gold Awards. Within the Harcourts International real estate group the highest achievement is Platinum status, which was achieved by a record number of agents from the local office. Michael Pashley and Jason Hutton both achieved Platinum – but they are no stranger to this elite group of agents. In addition to this, Lee Coetzee and Di Gillespie also received their first Platinum Awards – a great achievement for them, given that they are both relatively new to Harcourts Platinum. “These awards are for the third and fourth quarters of

2011,” says Caradoc-Davies. “We’re extremely excited about the next awards for 2012, as we are already enjoying record sales this year. “January and February saw Harcourts Platinum write over 40 sales at a sales value of over R50 million – which is really exceptional in this market.” Harcourts Platinum attribute their success to their worldclass service, comprehensive written marketing plans – which include Boland SOLD advertising – and leading-edge technology, which ensures maximum exposure to buyers. Asked what their secret for success is, Caradoc-Davies responds: “No one else can offer a property seller what we can. We commit in writing, and we deliver. Our agents leave no stone unturned to ensure our properties get maximum exposure, and sell for the best price the market will pay.” Harcourts Platinum are also the sole agents for Kelderhof Country Village and the Kings HillpropertiesinSomersetCountry Estate. Make your flowers last WHY do some flowers wilt as soon as you arrange them in a vase, and others bloom for days? To avoid disappointment, buy quality flowers from a trustworthy retailer supplied by a reputable grower. In-store water (in the buckets) should be clean and fresh-smelling, and the flowers should be stored in the coolest spot possible. Pick up your flowers on your way home so they do not lie around in a hot car. As soon as you reach home, pop the stems into a bucket of fresh water. The

vase you use should be very clean – not harbouring old bacteria or fungi. Glass is best as metal pots can interfere with the pH of the water. Try these simple steps to add to the life of your charming flowers: ) Trim at least two centimetres from the bottom of the stems to remove damaged tissue. Use secateurs or a clean, sharp, non-serrated knife – not kitchen scissors – and avoid tearing or smashing the stems. Cut diagonally to increase the surface area for water uptake, and to re-

duce further crushing of the stem. In addition, a stem cut this way will not flatten against the base of the vase ) Remove any leaves that will be submerged in the water – they will soon begin to rot. ) Remedies such as aspirin, lemonade and vodka are designed to nourish the flowers and control bacteria and fungi growth, but experts agree that a commercial cut-flower solution is the best way to improve longevity. Chrysal mimics the solution a plant naturally draws into its flowers. It contains all the necessary ingredients, and it’s the product of choice for most commercial flower producers. ) Watch the water level in the vase, and

replenish when necessary. ) Crucially, place your vase in a cool spot out of direct sunlight. ) Don’t position the vase near ripening fruit – ripe fruit exudes ethylene, which speeds flower decay. Finally, a professional grower explains a few common errors: ) Pricking stems causes dehydration ) Spraying leaves with or immersing flowers in water causes botrytis ) Using hot water on chrysanthemums initially results in quicker water uptake but ultimately reduces vase life. ) Cold water kills the cells in tulip stems. ) Sugar encourages bacterial growth. ) Bleach can damage cells.

Trying to keep your cut flowers alive for longer can sometimes feel frustrating, especially with the confusing mass of quickfix remedies around, but by following the easy pointers above you can give your flowers a fighting chance.

Renault Sandero 1,4 - the cheeky cheapy ted in-line four cylinder petrol engine developing 55kW (75hp) or 112Nm, claiming 7L/100 km and 164g CO2/km averages. In theory, this gives you a 700 km+ range from the 50 L tank and 71-odd hp/tonne from the Sandero’s 1050 kg kerb weight. Despite the puny numbers, let me assure you that this little engine is much livelier than its figures suggest. The 1.4 Sandero zips around town with verve and ease, even with passengers, but highway speeds and undulating countryside will be its undoing. The 1,4 motor is much happier at high revs than its 1,6 equivalent, which is a good thing, because you’ll have to thrash it regularly to maintain 120 km/h or more. 0-100 km/h takes 13 seconds (we shaved 0,2 off that) and top speed is an alleged 165 km/h. Sandero 1.4 is happiest as a daily commuter around town and, as mentioned, responds to throttle input with vigour; as well as a pleasing 8V growl and rushing gas noises from the exhaust system. Its 4,020 mm length is easy to oversee and a 10,5 m turning radius helps with parking. Pity the steering wheel isn’t adjustable. - Galimoto Media

Hanjo Stier LIKE many South Africans, I don’t always agree with new car pricing strategies and as a result, all cars I’ve ever bought were pre-owned. Thus it’s a refreshing change to test one of SA’s cheapest (and locally built) vehicles in the Dacia-flavoured shape of Renault’s Sandero. Our local line-up of 1,6 8V Dynamique and 1,6 8V Stepway (read our report here) have recently been joined by the 1,4 8V Ambiance model, slotting in behind the Stepway’s reasonable asking price of R149 900 and the Dynamique’s affordable R129 900 - this 1,4 model costs just R109 900. Its round shape and cheapy interior might not be overly appealing, but at a smidgen over hundred grand most people will agree that it’s a lot of metal for your money. Renault also tempts new buyers with the promise of its 5-year/150 000 km mechanical warranty and 3-year/60 000 km service plan. Standard kit includes feather-light power steering, a

good air-conditioner, remote central locking, a singleDIN CD/radio with 4 tinny speakers, manual mirrors, windy windows, two airbags, four hubcaps and ABS brakes with EBD who, despite utilising drums at the back and 185 mm rubber, are quite vicious. The exposed wipers have a budget look to them, but work flawlessly – front and back – and for such a cheap car, the Sandero has impressive main and dipped lights. The indicator sounds weird and only uses one bi-directional instrument lamp, kinda like a Citi Golf, and that gave me a prolonged warm buzz. These control the efforts of a 1,390cc 8-valve fuel-injec-

SA part of Yaris Hybrid roll-out THE new Yaris Hybrid launch at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show marks a new, major step in Toyota’s full hybrid roll-out strategy to core models in Europe and certain key markets including South Africa (June 2012). It combines the ingenious packaging and urban agility of the Yaris model range with the unique driving experience and efficiency of Toyota’s full hybrid powertrain, the Hybrid Synergy Drive (HSD). Following the launch of the Auris HSD in Europe in 2010 (South Africa in 2011), the Yaris Hybrid is Toyota’s second core model to feature full hybrid technology, and brings this remarkable powertrain to the biggest volume

segment. The new flagship of the Yaris model range, the Yaris Hybrid, features an exclusive, aerodynamically efficient exterior design. Featuring the new design face of the Toyota brand, it combines a new, more assertive trapezoid opening frontal design element with the Keen Look design implemented on the front lamps. The Yaris Hybrid features the first downsizing of Toyota’s HSD powertrain. Combining a new, 1,5 litre petrol engine with a lighter, more compact electric motor, transaxle, inverter and battery pack, the new system is 20% lighter than that of an Auris Hybrid. Thanks to the reduction in size of every key HSD component and both fuel tank and battery installed under the rear seat, the Yaris Hybrid features an identical occupant space and the same 286 litre luggage capacity to that of the conventional models. The Yaris Hybrid’s highly efficient, 74 kW powertrain offers a leading balance of performance and CO2 emissions in the

B-segment, whilst allowing customers to frequently drive in modes that emit zero NOx, PM and CO2 emissions. In fact taking data from a variety of journey types, it can be seen that the cumulative effect of the full hybrid powertrain leads to high proportions (up to 66%) of zeroemissions operation.

ADVANCED. Combining striking design, urban agility, functionality and segmentbest packaging with the innovation, efficiency and envi ronmental credentials of Toyota’s full hybrid technology, it represents the most advanced Yaris yet by Toyota.

More style in Benz C-Class Style Edition THE Mercedes Benz C-Class is the highest-selling model series, and therefore of particular importance for Mercedes-Benz. The current series has found well over one million buyers worldwide since its launch in March 2007. Since the market launch of the first C-Class in 1982 (then known as the 190 model), Mercedes-Benz has sold more than 8,5 million vehicles in total in this segment. In 2010, too, the C-Class was repeatedly topping the registration statistics. Since 2008 the saloon has been the unbeaten world market leader in its segment. A total of more than 2 000 new components distinguish the latest generation of the Mercedes-Benz C-Class from its predecessor.

With the Style Edition the central star takes prominent place on the radiator grille and is the focal element at the front. The front and tail-end section of the new-generation C-Class are styled more strikingly, the front being brought closer to the brand’s new design idiom. The C-Class has been given a new bonnet made of aluminium, and its contour in the area around the headlamps and the radiator grille emphasises the V-shape of the front end. In this new-generation model, the tail lights are even more neatly integrated into the tail end by a continuous covering lens. The particular impression of depth is achieved by a centrally located LED indicator, which appears to float in front of the red upper and lower light bands. The sporty and highquality dashboard, with stylish new trim concept has been enhanced. The touch surfaces of the controls are more finely detailed and galvanised. With its stepped extension, the instrument cluster’s panel now also accommodates the central display. The control panel of the new-generation communication and information unit has keys with highgloss surface inserts. The C 180 BlueEFFICIENCY model has a four-cylinder in-line engine with a displacement of 1 796 cc. This direct injection engine has a power output of

115 kW and 250 Nm of torque, and an impressive CO2 emission value of 150 g/km. The four-cylinder petrol engine features direct injection and turbo-charging, excel with high performance and exemplary economy and stands for systematic downsizing. The direct fuel injection facilitates higher compression and thus a better thermodynamic efficiency rate, which becomes apparent where fuel consumption is concerned. The core element of the new engine is the homogeneous direct injection. At a pressure of up to 140 bar the fuel is fed via a high-pressure line to injectors leading to the combustion chamber. This lowers fuel consumption and also considerably reduces pollutant emissions. The prices for the Mercedes-Benz C-Class are as follows: C 180 BlueEFFICIENCY Sedan ‘Style Edition’ R359 000, C 200 BlueEFFICIENCY Sedan ‘Style Edition’ R379 000 and the C 200 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY Sedan ‘Style Edition’ R380 000.

Thomas goes from beggar to businessman NIKITA SYLVESTER

AFTER spending some time on the street as a homeless, jobless drug addict, 26-year-old Thomas Kameni was given a second chance at life – and now runs his very own car-wash business. It was a few months ago that Thomas met a man who, to him, turned out to be an angel

McLachlan. eni and Lyal am K as om Th

in disguise. “I was sitting on the pavement at Shoprite Checkers in Somerset West when I saw this man pull up in a very nice car, and thought I should ask him for something,” says Thomas. He approached the man with the sweetest smile and most polite greeting he could muster, asking for money or something to eat. But the man told him that this wasn’t the way to make a proper living: “We must use our hands to work, not to beg.” So Thomas told the man he was willing to work for his money, and earned himself an invitation to the workplace of his benefactorto-be the following Monday to wash his car. This is exactly what Thomas did, and so the friendship and business relationship between Thomas Kameni and Lyal McLachlan began. The two began planning how they could make the car-washing business a permanent venture for Thomas. “Having this business is very important to me,” Thomas says. “I have a wife and fiveyear-old son back in the Eastern Cape because I couldn’t support them here. I want to make a success of this so that they can live with me here, and I can care for them.” With his own uniform, website and flyers,

Businessman Thomas Kameni.

Don t do it for the money THERE is a TV programme in the UK called Your Money or Your Life, in which the presenter interviews clients who are usually in desperate need of financial planning. Part of his approach is psychological; he discusses the client’s aspirations, their relationship with money, their parents’ attitude towards money. This information allows him to create a mental picture of his client’s goals and factors, which might prevent the achievement of these goals. With this in mind I would like to step away from my usual approach and discuss our reasons for working. I recall some words of wisdom, which went something like this: “Dance as if nobody is watching, work as if you don’t need the money, and love as if your heart has never been broken.” The anonymous author is telling us to put our fears of the past and future aside and to live in the moment, for this is living life to the full. Why do you go to work? Is it to pay the bills? Are you a victim of a typical financial rut – got a spouse, got kids, got debts, so it’s off to work I go? South Africans are notorious for accumulating assets, usually compliments of their very friendly bank manager. These assets include holiday homes, bigger houses, bigger cars, etc. I refer to this as the hamster wheel: the faster you run, the faster the wheel turns and the faster you must run to stay on. The only difference is the size of your wheel. “Work as if you don’t need the money.” People often tell me that if they were to win the lotto they would quit

Thomas’s Car Wash – as the business is called – sees about 25 to 30 customers a week. His business is run mostly from Myburg Street, Somerset West, where he washes the cars of customers coming in and out of surrounding shopping complexes, as well as at businesses such as a nearby guest house. His dream is to, one day, run his business from his very own property. “I would like people to bring their cars to be washed,” he continues. “I would like to create jobs for others too, and have employees who will wash the cars. I would like to have transport for my workers, and place for an office.” Thomas says he’s truly grateful for the opportunity he was given, and is positive about his future, adding that although things are tough at times, he now at least has something to eat and a roof over his head. He’s also proud to say his life is now drugand alcohol-free. And Lyal’s thoughts on the matter? “I think Thomas has helped me more than I’ve helped him,” he says. “I believe that we all have the same abilities, no matter who we are or where we come from – it’s whether or not we take the opportunities God provides us with that makes us different.”

working immediately. This troubles me. What kind of life are you living if the only reason for going to work is to get paid? Keep in mind the average person works eight hours a day for about 30 years of their life. What do you do for your pay cheque that you would do differently if you did not need the money? Put your fears aside and take a chance to discover the opportunities that exist for the person who lives for now. If you love what you do, you never work a day in your life! The most successful people do what they love for the love of it, and not the money. Don’t let money be your motivator.

Galjoen galore caught last weekend SHORE anglers who enjoy targeting the wily galjoen will be pleased to hear that several anglers had very good catches of this fish all along the coastline during the past weekend. Dawid van der Merwe of Betty’s Bay reports that quite a number of locals caught their full quotas from the old whaling station and from Castle Rock. There were also reports of galjoen all along the coast right up to the Struisbaaiplaat and rocks. I heard that one or two white steenbras were also caught during the weekend. Anglers must bear in mind that the quota for steenbras is one per angler, and the size limit is 60 cm. The quota for galjoen is two per angler, and fish must be a minimum length of 35 cm. I would like to remind anglers that it is illegal to catch undersize fish and keep more than the legal quota. Please release all your undersize fish so that our next generation can also enjoy our sport. On Friday afternoon Blake’s Beach delivered two three-kilo leerfish (garrick). One was caught by Willis Kriegler, the crack Strand spinner man, and the other by an unknown visitor. On Friday night two anglers filled their quotas of elf on Blake’s Beach, and on Saturday morning Blake’s Rocks came to light with a

few good-sized kob and elf. The boats that did go out at the Poort only caught a few kob, white stumpnose and elf. The regular small boats that persevered at Hangklip Bay found up to 10 geelbek per boat for their trouble. This is the time of the year that very good catches of geelbek can be expected by boats and shore anglers at Betty’s Bay venues. Raymond van Rensburg and his brother in law James Crause went fishing just outside the Poort on Sunday in Raymond’s boat, and were pleasantly surprised when James hooked a 18,7 kg yellowtail on fresh sardine. James said the fish put up a magnificent fight and, after 15 minutes, he was rewarded with this beauty. Rayner Ras had some good catches of bonito at the Island at Mossel Bay

last weekend, all caught on Rapalas. Rayner says hundreds of these bonnies were caught there. Boatmen fishing around Struisbaai reported excellent catches of yellowtail, skipjack, tuna and marlin there over the weekend. Helderberg shore angler Eric Stone caught a kob of 3,723 kg (71 cm) on Sunday morning at Harbour Island. The experimental nets that have been rigged up along the Fish Hoek coast to catch scallops and whelks have caused the death of a 4,3 m female great white shark, about 15 years old. It is obvious that the shark was attracted to the bait in one of the nets, and then became entangled in the nets. Although these nets are small, it is possible for sharks and other sea animals to be caught in them. I strongly believe that all netting along our coastline should be abolished. In False Bay, when trek nets are full of bait fish and other sea creatures, they attract smaller sharks and rays, which will in turn lure bigger sharks to the coastline. This could cause unnecessary problems. For all your reel repairs and services, contact Art on 0 021 854 3831 – and don’t forget to send your fishing news and photos to 2

See the water warriors: Blue Rock, the cable-skiing resort on the N2 near Sir Lowry’s Pass Village, will host the 28th Western Province Swimming Championships on Sunday. A total of 125 swimmers from all over South Africa will be swimming in various age groups and distances from 09:00 to 11:00. The prize-giving will take place from 11:00 to 13:00. Spectators are encouraged to go and watch the best swimmers in SA in action at this venue; the arena at the Blue Rock Restaurant and the walkways on the water offer a perfect view over the whole lake for spectators to watch the swimmers while having something to eat and drink. The Blue Rock Restaurant will be open from 07:00 on Sunday. Blue Rock will also be offering holiday camps for children from 25 to 28 March. The youngsters will get to learn water-skiing, kneeboarding, wakeboarding, rock-jumping and swimming, and take part in a multitude of team-building exercises. Accommodation, three meals a day and 24-hour adult supervision are included. For bookings and enquiries, send an email to 2 or call 021 858 1330; alternatively, pay a visit to

SWCC beat a game Yorkshire

Helderberg hammer Gugs

SOMERSET West secured a hard-fought sixwicket win against a resolute Yorkshire team in their two-day match that ended at Radloff Park on Saturday. Yorkshire resumed their second innings on 12/0, still 42 runs behind the host team. The visitors batted well on the hard, dry wicket that offered little assistance to the bowlers, and they went on to score a commendable 237/9 in their allotted overs. Off-spinner James Wilshere, who bowled a marathon spell of 23 overs, was the best of the home team’s bowlers with figures of 23-62-63. He was ably supported by Brendon Simpson (9-2-16), Lucien Simpson (16-1-54), Shawn Dicks (9-1-22) and Vernon Davids (9-1-20). A weary Somerset West team, who had been in the field all day and then had to chase 184 runs in 40 overs to win the match, man-

HELDERBERG cemented their top spot on the Western Province Cricket Association’s 1 D log with an emphatic innings and 22-run win over Gugulethu at the Helderzicht sports complex on Saturday. Day two of the match resumed on Saturday with the visitors needing another 66 runs to make Helderberg bat again. The home team had other ideas and never gave their opponents the chance to settle down. Captain Vincent Castle and fellow open-

aged to do so, losing only three wickets. Rudi Meyer (18) and Shawn Dicks (38) opened the batting for Somerset West and put together a partnership of 48 runs. Lance Ravens (32*) and Ebrahiem Gafieldien (80*) added an 80-run partnership to the total to take the game away from the visitors. The good news for the home team is that they scored 23,325 points out of a possible 25 points from the game. With Helderberg having already won the 1 D log and promotion to the 1 C league, Avendale, Fish Hoek and Somerset West will be fighting it out for second place and promotion in their last matches, which start this weekend. Somerset West play Cravenby at home; a convincing win with maximum points could secure them second place, but this will only happen if Avendale and Fish Hoek, who will play against each other, draw their match.

ing fast-bowler Adrian van Reenen immediately let rip and destroyed the opposition with their devastating bowling attack. It took Helderberg only 40 minutes to remove the last seven wickets and destroy Gugulethu’s chances of a fight-back. Castle was this week the destroyer in chief, taking five wickets for 34 runs in his 13 overs, which included two maiden overs. He was well supported by Van Reenen, who took two wickets for 17 runs in 15 overs, with six maidens.

HHCC eke out a narrow win ALTHOUGH they made things difficult for themselves while chasing 75 runs, Hottentots Holland Cricket Club (HHCC) finally managed to eke out a two-wicket win against Atlantis. The match was played on 3 and 10 March at Gustrouw. Log standings (2 A log) at the start of the weekend saw five teams in contention for the top spot, with the difference between fifth and first teams being only five points. HHCC lost the toss and fielded first. A good opening spell by R Naidoo and G Moller had Atlantis at 17 for 3 after 11 overs. Atlantis fought back taking their score to 43 for 3 after 17 overs. HHCC bowlers E Daniels and R Oliver then bowled a brilliant spell of 18 overs to take 7 wickets for 45 runs, bowling Atlantis out for 88 runs. The home team got off to a rocky start, losing both openers in the fourth over. An outstanding partnership by R Rhoda and E Aziz steadied the innings to steer HHCC to 152/8 declared after 55 overs. E Daniels with 10-4-30 and R Oliver (8-320) were the best bowlers, while R Rhoda (55) and E Aziz (40) top-scored. Atlantis also struggled in their second innings and were 46/5 after 21 overs at stumps on day one, thanks to some great

bowling by Oliver and Naidoo. HHCC started day two with high hopes of a win and a short day in the field. Atlantis had other plans, and a sixth-wicket partnership of 35 took their score to 81/5. Oliver then entered the bowling attack for his second spell and took two wickets in four overs. Atlantis were all out soon afterward for 138, leaving a target of 75 for victory. The pick of the bowlers were R Oliver (16-5-27) and G Moller (16-2-23); and the top batsmen E Aziz (17) and H Slamdien (16). The second team beat Rondebosch by 82 runs in their one-day match played at the Navy sports ground in Gordon’s Bay two weeks ago. HHCC scored 101 all out and bowled out their opponents for 19. The best bowlers were R Baderoen with 7-5-4 and S van de Lilly with 3-1-4. Batsmen J Harris (24) and Z Baderoen (20) top-scored. The seconds also beat Northerns Goodwood by 101 runs in their one-day match at Radloff Park last weekend. HHCC scored 171 in 35 overs and bowled out their opponents for 70. The best bowlers were B Achmat with 7-3-21 and R Baderoen (7-2-8). R Appolis (50) and F Crombie (25) top-scored.

Thursday, 15 March 2012 ARGUS-FIETSTOER

ARGUS CYCLE TOUR Pedal power: Michael Lord (third from left) has been adjudged the most promising u.16 junior cyclist in the Helderberg, completing the 110 km Cape Argus Pick n Pay Cycle Tour on Sunday in an excellent time of three hours and six minutes. Presenting him with his prizes are (from left) Pieter Schoeman (Fabi Sportswear), Alf Robinson (Helderberg Cycle Safe) and Hertzel Brodovcky (Grahams). This is the 22nd year in which DistrictMail, together with Grahams and Cycle Safe, has offered a prize to a Helderberg cyclist completing the famous race. Included in Michael’s prizes were a cycling shirt from Fabi Sportswear and safety gear from Cycle Addiction.

Guest star: Earl Rose made a guest appearance at inside centre for the SF Barbarians in the match against Helderberg on Saturday. He scored all 12 points for his team, while his younger brother Jody, who he was playing against, scored all 13 points for Helderberg.

Big hit: Helderberg scrumhalf Breyton Isaacs tries to escape the tackle from Raees Adams and Dale Wilson during the match.

Charity champs: Rugby players, coaches and officials of the Helderberg Rugby Club are seen with the Sports Foundation Barbarians and a host of supporters after the historic match between the two teams on Saturday. Helderberg won the closely contested match 13–12. The SF Barbarians were represented by players and officials from Strand Pioneers, Raithby Universals, Strand United, St Georges and Strand. SATURDAY saw the conclusion of the first ever Rematch Sport Charity Cup hosted by the Helderberg Rugby Club, and I think it’s safe to say that it was a success, as it is a new concept – not only to the players and management of the clubs, but to the supporters as well. After Helderberg thrashed Wellington last week, the local Sports Foundation (SF) Barbarians squad gave them much stiffer opposition, with the Rose brothers match-up proving to be very interesting indeed. I wonder whether these two have ever previously played against each other. With the initial resistance against this concept slowly fading, I want to make it clear that the Sports Foundation is in full support of all the rugby clubs in the region, and respects their heritage. It must be understood that the clubs that weren’t involved this past Saturday did have confirmed commitments at other events, and were correct in sticking to their word. So where to from here? The Sports Foundation is in the process of arranging more games against Super League opposition, but also respects that the clubs’ league campaigns take priority.

The Sports Foundation would like to thank all the clubs involved – their players, supporters and management – for their support. Last Friday also saw a very good All Saints side host Strand Pioneers and run out convincing 18–0 victors. Coach Denzil Davids should be a proud and happy man. This week sees Helderberg host Kraaifontein and Macassar host Violets, while Strand United are away to Busy Bees. There will also be a Strand derby between Strand Pioneers and St Georges at Abattoir. Many would see this as a David vs Goliath clash, but I’m sure Pioneers coach Anwar Josephs would disagree. I’m jumping the gun a bit, but I would also like to make mention of the St Georges RFC Top-8 Tournament starting next Wednesday, and the Raithby Universals RFC tournament over Easter weekend. I will be giving more information about that tournament in the weeks to come.

League games start in Lwandle LAST Sunday De Beers hosted Bellville in another round of pre-season friendlies and came up against some stiff opposition. The De Beers combined first and second team lost their first match 2–1, and their second game 4–0, while the third teams drew 2–2. This Sunday De Beers host Everton United. The seconds play at 13:00 and the firsts at 15:00. The first round of league games got underway in Lwandle last weekend with Mighty Pioneers beating Young Stars 5–1, Juventas beating Bloemfontein Pirates 6–2, and Two for Joy beating Black Aces 7–2. Defending league champions Young Chiefs collected three points as their opponents, RDP, did not officially register in time for the match. Lwandle Soccer Association chairperson Linda Pistoli asked me to coach their district side, who play friendly matches on a monthly basis against some top teams from higher leagues. This past Tuesday we hosted Chippa United, who campaign in the National First Division (second highest league in SA), and on 21 March we play against a team from the Vodacom League. Last week I wrote that De Beers had played against Nelson’s Academy, when

in fact they had played Strand Academy. This was brought to my attention by Agmat Daggia from the club. The Strand Academy will campaign in the tough Mitchells Plain District this season. Last weekend the team played in a tournament in Lavender Hill and beat Hawks 2–0; this Sunday they play their second match against Waca United. Nobody was able to make any headway on the leaderboard, so things stay as they are for now, with Mr Ribeiro leading the race towards the end-of-season prize of a replica shirt of his choice. Predictions for this weekend start with tonight’s second leg between Athletic Bilbao and Manchester United in the Europa League. The second game is in the FA Cup between Liverpool and Stoke, and the last game is on the local scene with the derby between Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs. Three local cricket clubs aim for promotion THREE of our local cricket clubs are in with a good chance of gaining promotion to a higher league. After slipping up against Kensington, Helderberg bounced back with a good win and have all but secured promotion into the 1 C league – a fantastic effort considering it is their first season back in 1 D for a while. What makes this performance even more impressive is that they have won the 1 D league; that isn’t done too often, especially in the first season in a league. Somerset West are currently lying in fourth place in the 1 D league. They will be disappointed after topping the league for most of the first half of the season. They do still, however, have a chance of going up to the 1 C league, but need

to win their last game and hope that one or two results go their way. Hottentots Holland Cricket Club (HHCC) are currently joint fourth in the 2 A league (all top-four teams have the same number of wins). HHCC have a great chance to get promoted to the first division if they finish strongly. Good luck to all these teams; the more teams we get playing in a higher league, the better it is for cricket in the Helderberg. Unfortunately rain had the last say in the Dunedin test match between New Zealand and South Africa, and put an end to South Africa’s chances of topping the test championship standings. There are, however, still two tests to go, and it is imperative that SA play well in

these and pick up a series win, especially in view of the fact that they will be playing against England next. It’s going to be a great series, with SA having a great chance of toppling England to take over the number one spot in the world. The only worry is that after the New Zealand series we don’t play any international cricket until July. Gary Kirsten and his team will certainly have their work cut out for them to get SA match-fit for the England series.

Match exceeds expectations Jody’s brother Earl, guesting for the SF Barbarian team, shrunk the lead to 7–3 after a successful penalty attempt. The only other first-half score came from a Jody Rose penalty to give the hosts a 10–3 half-time advantage. After the break the Barbarians had the strong wind behind them and took full advantage of this. Earl, who grew up in the Strand, used the wind well and slotted a long-range penalty from three metres inside his own half to change the score to 10–6. He followed this up soon afterwards with a beautiful angled kick, about 50 m out (10–9). However, Jody was next on the scoreboard with another penalty into the wind to give Helderberg a four-point lead (13–9). Earl closed the scoring with a final penalty to end the game 13–12. In the final analysis Jody beat Earl 13–12, and one can only wonder what dad Enver had to say about that. Other results: Helderberg II 20 – Violets I 7. The primary schools sevens tournament, played at the club earlier that day, was won by Metho Squirrels.

The programme for this Saturday’s matches against Kraaifontein is (Helderberg teams first): A field at 13:25 – u.20 A vs Kraaifontein A; 14:45 – II vs Kraaifontein II; 16:00 – I vs Kraaifontein I. B field at 13:35 – III vs Kraaifontein III; and 14:45 – u.20 B vs Macassar A.

THE historic Rematch Sport Charity Cup game between Helderberg and the Sports Foundation Barbarian team at the Charles Morkel Stadium on Saturday was an unparalleled success. Although Helderberg won the hardfought encounter 13–12, rugby was the real winner of the day, attracting one of the biggest crowds seen at Helderberg’s club in many years. The Helderberg Sports Foundation Barbarians were made up of players from Strand United, Strand Pioneers, Raithby Universals, St Georges and Strand as these clubs did not have any other commitments on the day. They were coached by Winston Baard and, considering the short time they had to practise for the match, certainly made a good account of themselves. The rugby match itself was characterised by close marking and uncompromising defensive tactics. Neither team allowed the other much freedom on the offensive, therefore, the end result was hardly a surprise. As the match progressed it began to display all the ingredients of a derby game. The teams realised each other’s strengths and nullified one another’s efforts effectively. After two failed attempts Jody Rose opened the scoring for Helderberg in the ninth minute with a great break and a try next to the posts. The conversion was a formality, and Helderberg took a 7–0 lead.

Just play and you could be lucky!
