Grypdief slaan toe in Strand

’n

Ek was so geskok.

Almal sit net en doen niks, so ek moes iets doen. As ek in daardie situasie was, sou ek wou gehad het iemand moes my help.” Konst. Dailon Adams of speurkonst. Nondzukiso Booi by 021 854 9100 bel.

GONE WITH THE WIND: Come June/July this centuriesold Milkwood tree might not serve its purpose of being one of the main attractions during the annual Winter Wonderland festival in Gordon’s Bay. This follows after the tree, which is situated opposite the Gordon’s Bay Post Office, sustained severe damage due to strong southeasterly winds. According to Gordon’s Bay police spokesperson, warrant officer Nico Beukes, the incident occurred around 22:00 on Sunday evening. “Two huge branches suddenly broke off and landed in the parking area,” said Beukes. Victim lives in fear after robber gets bail ILLANA FRANTZ A woman from Sir Lowry’s Pass is living in fear after the man who robbed her last week, was released on bail. The woman, who wishes to remain anonymous, was on her way to work on Wednesday 27 February at around 08:00 when the incident occurred. “I stopped my car at the gate and got out to open it. As I turned around to walk back to my car, I saw a man reaching into my car and grabbing my handbag between the two front seats.” She shouted at the man and asked him what he wanted. He didn’t answer, but when she got closer, she saw a panga in his left hand. “He attempted to hit me with the panga and

screamed in my face. I retreated and lifted my left arm to cover my face. That’s when he made his escape into the bushes,” she recalls. The woman went to the police station in Sir Lowry’s Pass, hoping that her quick action would result in an arrest. “They were more concerned about my injuries and getting my statement, than actually going out to get the guy. They also told me they share a radio line with the station in Khayelitsha and would have to wait their turn to summon a patrol vehicle.” The woman was informed that the docket would be transferred to the Somerset West police station for further investigation. Two days later when she didn’t hear anything from the police, she and her boyfriend decided to investigate the incident. “I remember seeing the guy who robbed me

walking in Sir Lowry’s Pass Road about a week before the incident. He and some other guys cut wood in the forest, so we asked those guys who were with him where he was.” The couple’s investigation led them to the robber’s shack, also in Sir Lowry’s Pass, which according to neighbours, had been padlocked for two days. When the robber returned, one of the men called the woman’s boyfriend who then apprehended him. “My boyfriend loaded him onto his bakkie and drove to my work where I positively identified him. He was sitting in the bakkie, but couldn’t see me as I looked through the window. He still wore the same clothes. My boyfriend then handed him over to the Somerset West police.” When the woman asked the investigating officer on Monday what had happened to the

man, she was told that he had appeared in court, but had been released on bail of R300. “I was very angry. My whole life was in that bag – my bank cards, my ID and a charm bracelet. My asthma inhaler is worth more than the bail he paid. There was also a set of keys in my bag, which he could use to gain entrance to my house,” said the woman. Constable Suzan Jantjies, spokesperson for Somerset West SAPS, confirmed that a robbery with a weapon other than a firearm was reported. The police and the state opposed bail, but were unsuccessful. “When arrests are made by civilians, they should be wary of infringing on the alleged robber’s constitutional rights. Rather phone the police immediately,” she said. The suspect will make his next court appearance on Tuesday 9 April.

The City plans to begin building the emergency houses this month, after protests over a lack of housing in the area occurred last May. The 50 families currently living on the site were identified as those worst affected by flooding and were moved from various areas around Sir Lowry’s Pass by the City in July last year. The houses’ size will be 26 m² each, in compliance with the prescriptions of the National Housing Code. However, community members say these homes will be too small to accommodate their families, and they will not be able to extend the houses. Councillor Tandeka Gqada, Mayco Member for Human Settlements in the City of Cape Town said that structures will be open-plan to allow the residents to partition them off according to their individual needs, but residents will not be able to extend the houses. The houses will remain the assets of the City, says Gqada.

maak has always been intended to alleviate the problem of flooding, not to provide a long-term solution. He said the unhappiness over the housing arose because residents were not aware that they would qualify for a subsidy to allow them to build homes under a people’s housing process, which gives the community control over the housing project, at a later stage. The emergency housing has previously been used at an incremental development site in Mfuleni.

The City of Cape Town will soon be building 177 emergency houses in Riemvasmaak in Sir Lowry’s Pass, but some residents are concerned that the homes will be too small for their families.

According to community leader Lionel Benjamin, the houses will be erected on the site and the families allowed to move in to remove the problems caused by heavy flooding in the lower lying areas of Sir Lowry’s Pass. Only then will the property be subdivided and the community members given ownership of it.

sleutels in ’n laaikas tussen ’n T-hemp weggesteek.

Reward for pendant NIKITA SYLVESTER Somerset West resident Jenny Hurling is going to all lengths to recover her one-ofa-kind missing pendant. Hurling says that because the pendant carries so much meaning and sentimental value, she is offering a R1 000 reward to the person who returns it, no questions asked. Hurling retells the unfortunate series of event which took place on her birthday, 13 February. Her daughter Taryn Erasmus decided to spoil her mother with beauty treatments at a spa in Somerset West. Being a regular client at the spa Hurling said she had recognised a few new employees whom she had never met before. “As I entered the room for my treatment I realised I was still wearing my beads and chain with the pendant around my neck.” Hurling adding that as she battled to get the clasp undone the pendant was still clearly vis-

ible on her chain. Hurling remembers placing both her beads and chain on the cupboard beside her. After her treatment, she proceeded in putting her jewellery on when her chain fell from the cupboard. As she picked it up she noticed the pendant was no longer on it. Thinking it must have fallen somewhere, Hurling began searching the room. She called in her daughter, who was waiting for her outside, as well as some of the employees to help her look but to no avail. Hurling said she was definitely wearing the pendant when she entered the room because the woman who did her treatments was able to describe the pendant when Hurling enquired about its whereabouts. Determined to continue the search, Hurling got in contact with the owner of the spa who confirmed that although the pendant did not turn up, all the employees had undergone a polygraph test and were cleared. Despite making a case with the police, Hurling states that if her pendant is returned to her care she will withdraw the case, not press any further charges and reward the person with R1 000. “All I want is to get my pendant back. It is irreplaceable, there is not another one like that in the world, it was made especially for a loved one and passed on to me. No amount of money can replace it, means a lot to me. “Even if I don’t find it, I want to make sure that I did everything I could to get it back,” said Hurling. Anyone with information regarding the whereabouts of the pendant is asked to contact Jenny on 082 331 0338.

IN MEMORIAM

H’berg business man remembered Francois Pretorius, a well-known local businessman, passed away on Thursday 28 February 2013. Paul du Toit of Morkel and De Villiers Attorneys tells the story of how Francois came to Somerset West as a young man with his young bride Debbie in 1982 where they swiftly established themselves in this community. They were the owners of Dilly’s Supermarket in Heldervue for a period of six years and became well known and much loved. Francois then decided that it was time for a change and ventured into the property business. He soon headed Remax, Somerset West, Strand and Gordon’s Bay and was widely regarded as an expert in the property field. Francois was an outdoor person and never happier than when he was camping in the bush. He had a particular fondness for the big cats and as a keen photographer had many beautiful photographs as trophies of lions and other wild animals in the veld. He always remained humble and was a good friend to so many people often assisting quietly and in the background where and when he was needed. He was a loving husband to Debbie and father to Philip and Niki, and he loved taking his family with him to his beloved bushveld, camping, braaiing and enjoying nature. The funeral service will be held on Friday 8 March at 10:00 at the Hottentots-Holland Dutch Reformed Church.

Charles Denniston: “Francois had a zest for life. He loved outdoor adventure and thrived on a chal lenge, whether it was arm wrestling or the highest dune. He had a keen sense of humour and loved nothing more than to reminiscence about all the an tics we got up to. “Francois was loved by all, but a private person and if you broke through all the bravado, you found a genuine, caring, funloving friend who would al ways be there for you. “‘To live in the hearts we leave behind, is not to die’.”

Hy was ’n man wat emosie kon wys. Hy was ’n realis. Ou Knormoer, we gonna miss you around the fire and table.”

Ek het lanklaas sulke opgewekte, hulpvaardige mense gesien wat so opgewek hul werk take verrig. Julle maak my dag altyd so won derlik, elke keer wanneer ek pe trol in my motor laat gooi. Elize Liebenberg

SWest law enforcers march against crime Violent crimes against young women once again reared it’s ugly head in the Helderberg this week. In two separate incidents (one in Gordon’s Bay and one in Sir Lowry’s Pass) two women were attacked, robbed and threatened. In both instances law-abiding citizens came to the aid of the women to try and stop the crime and arrest the criminals, but unfortunately the good samaritans came off second best and the perpetrators got away once more. Helderbergers are sick and tired of crime, criminals and the slow moving wheels of justice and are standing up to try and do something about it. A spokesperson for the SAPS this week however warned that when arrests are made by civilians, they should be careful of infringing on the alleged robber’s constitutional rights and rather phone the SAPS to deal with the crime. It appears that officials heard the public cries to stop crime and criminals and decided to do something about it. On Wednesday a group of law enforcement officers marched through Somerset West in an effort to curb crime in the area. Let’s hope this is a regular occurrence and is followed in all areas in and around the Helderberg.

Dankie aan Kansa se Relay for Life As kanker-oorlewende wil ek net ’n groot dankie sê vir die wonderlike geleentheid Saterdagaand 2 Maart by die Hoërskool Hottentots-Holland. Dankie is nie genoeg nie. Hulle was my stapmaats by die Kansa Relay for Life. Toe ek ’n uiters moeilike tyd deurgemaak het, was hulle my steunpilare. Ek sê, Thank you Jesus vir twee wonderlike vriende in my lewe. God se rykste seën vir hulle. Met dankbaarheid.

I-Pledge vehicle safety campaign does not work in practice On 30 January 2013 my car was hit by a cargo truck on the N2. The truck swerved into the fast lane without looking and hit the left rear fender of my vehicle. The driver then (after many signals from me) refused to stop (illegal according to laws of South Africa) and I had to follow him all the way to Maitland at his stop. This was approximately 15 km from scene of accident. After I enquired as to what the driver thought he was doing he started using foul language, as witnessed by another employee. More than a month later, after

all my submissions, the company informed me that they deny liability as the driver’s version of the incident was not the same as my own. After informing the MD of the company that it was impossible to get witnesses since the driver kept driving away from the scene. The MD did eventually apologise for the inconvenience caused and promised to look into the matter. I recently received another email from that company denying liability of the accident. This shows that the same compa-

Mnr. Botha of sy seuns, of

Baie dankie, PW Botha & Seuns. Voorspoed vorentoe.

ny behind the I-Pledge vehicle safety campaign condones their drivers driving away from the scene of an accident and using abusive language to other road users. This is in a country where road accidents are a major problem and one would expect drivers of 18 wheeler trucks to be more cautious on the road. The company has contradicted itself tremendously in this situation and still did not even have the decency to apologise for the driver’s behaviour in the least.

Thanks for the improvements In these times of shocking service delivery we have been so impressed by the response received to two problems near our office in the Strand, namely the clearing of the nearby ‘tik-house’ and it’s unsavoury inhabitants (and keeping it clear) and the recent improvement in the condition of the Galloway Plein. To all those involved (Dave Venter, DA Helderberg, in particular) we’d like to thank you. Your efforts are hugely appreciated.

Rules for watering gardens In order to prevent further water wastage, residents are once again being encouraged to stick to the specified garden watering times. Especially important during summer seasons when dam levels traditionally tend to drop, the City of Cape Town’s water and sanitation department has confirmed that although there is no cause for concern, the City appeals to residents to remain water wise. The following rules apply when watering: • Only water gardens before 10:00 or after 16:00. • All hose pipes used for washing vehicles must have an auto-

matic self-closing nozzle fitted. • Residents who use borehole or wellpoint water must register or re-register their boreholes and wellpoints with the City. A new sign and certificate of appreciation will be provided to those who register new and re-register existing boreholes and wellpoints, which must be displayed prominently. Although they are exempt from the watering time stipulations, these water users are encouraged to only water their gardens during the stipulated watering times according to the City’s by-laws. Further details can be found on the City’s website.

AFS needs hosts AFS Interculture SA, a nonprofit organisation which promotes intercultural learning and awareness through exchange programmes, invites families in the Helderberg to host young foreign exchange participants. According to a volunteer and representative of the organisation, Isaac Lategan, hosting an exchange participant is like inviting the world into your own home. “It is a fantastic opportunity to expose your family to a different culture whilst building a longlasting relationship with an interesting young person from another country. “We are inviting applications from safe, open-minded and caring families who will voluntarily provide the exchange participants with love, food, a separate bed and opportunities for culture sharing with each other and our diverse communities.” Lategan added that the local youth also has the opportunity to travel, attend school and experience life with a foreign family abroad through the AFS Interculture sending programmes. With this programme, exchange participants gain more appreciation of different cultures and many become active global citizens against poverty, racism and

gender discrimination. “AFS Interculture SA has given young people from around the world the opportunity to stay with a South African family and experience our culture of ubuntu since 1958.” If you would like more information on hosting a foreign exchange participant, phone Lategan on 083 988 5706. You can also send an e-mail to info-southafrica@afs.org, visit their website www.afs.org.za or find them on Facebook.

The South African Local Government Association (SALGA) is a core partner of Operation Khanyisa, a campaign that aims to mobilise all South Africans for legal, safe and efficient electricity use. SALGA has recently committed to redoubling its efforts to combat the crime of electricity theft, which it says is responsible for municipalities losing up to R3.2 billion each year.

OPERATIONKHANYISA.CO.ZA

According to SALGA’s Executive Director for Municipal Infrastructure Services, Mthobeli Kolisa, SALGA needs to coordinate and support municipalities to act and report their action in respect of electricity theft, and to review their bylaws to have more stringent penalties against electricity theft. At the launch of Operation Khanyisa, Xolile George, CEO of SALGA, described electricity theft as “a pandemic coursing through our delivery capabilities and fiscal planning.” “Local government,” he said “plays a pivotal role in the distribution of electricity, and electricity theft hits at the very heart of the electricity distribution industry in South Africa.” “Enough is enough,” George continued. “We have joined forces with our partners in Operation Khanyisa and will stamp out this crime.” Together with Crime Line, Operation Khanyisa provides a platform for South Africans to report electricity theft anonymously, by sending a detailed SMS to 32211 (R1/SMS). 12 Distrikspos Helderberg community shows drive at Cansa Relay

Algemeen General

7 Maart, 2013

This past weekend saw the launch and successful finish of the first CANSA Relay For Life Helderberg, held on Hottentots-Holland High School’s rugby field. At 18:00 on Saturday, 60 cancer survivors, the oldest being 90 years old and the youngest six years old, led the teams for the start of an all-night relay around the field. Teams of between 10 and 15 people could enter at R75 per person. The funds will be donated to CANSA. “The Helderberg community showed drive, dedication, determination and a commitment that is unequalled and unmatched. Spirits remained high all night, with people supporting and motivating each other as the goal for can-

cer awareness remained in each and everyone’s hearts and minds,” said Colin Prinsloo, one of the organisers. He thanked the following teams: Lochnerhof Primary School (Lochie Diva’s), Strand High (Eagles), BUCO (who also sponsored the Survivor T-shirts), Hotshots, Herbalife, Clark Pools (The hair salon combo team who won the team prize for most funds raised), Care Bears and Purple Turtles just to name a few. Special mention must be made to individuals such as Johannes, who completed a total of 131 laps, and Dennis from Team Purple Turtles who completed 111 laps, totalling almost ninety seven km between the two of them. “They not only inspired everyone else, but showed team work and dedication that is unri-

valed. Special thanks goes out to HottentotsHolland High School for sponsoring the venue and all the facilities free of charge, and to the Strand Lions Club and other unsung heroes who ensured bellies were filled and energy levels remained high all night.” The organisers want to thank each and every one who took part for making this an event that will remain a beacon in the hearts of hundreds, and contributing to the success of the event. They plan to host the same event next year. To become part of this, phone Carol on 073 204 5979, email helderberg4cansa@live.co.za or find them on Facebook.

Great support for Cansa at mall The 10th annual Cansa Shavathon was greatly supported by all at Somerset Mall this past Saturday. People of all shapes, ages and sizes showed up to either have their heads shaven, sprayed or to make use of this year’s added bonus – colour hair gel. The cost were R50 for adults and R25 for children under 12 and volunteers were hard at work the whole day from 08:00 to 17:00 in the area opposite Cape Town Fish Market. According to Elnette du Toit, community mobiliser for Cansa, the total funds raised could not be confirmed yet.

The great rotation, out of bonds into equities

It has been said that investing is simple, but not easy. Global asset managers are currently talking about the “great rotation” referring to the possible move out of bonds into equities as investors try to protect their wealth against rising inflation. The investment theory is simple. The current yield on a 10 year US treasury is 1,9%, providing a 0,2% real return before tax (US inflation currently at 1,7%). If or rather when – if you believe in Keynesian economic theory – inflation begins to rise bond investors will be forced to move out of bonds or face real losses on their investments. The rather obvious alternative investment for bond investors is global equity. Developed Market Global equity indices have only just recovered to their previous highs in 2000, whilst corporate earnings have grown strongly

over the period resulting in the very favourable current valuation multiples. Keep in mind investors generally shunned risky equities in favour of risk-free bonds over the last 12 years. A current global equity dividend yield of ± 3%, with the potential for growth, is indicative of great value, offering investors a “no-brain” alternative to the dismal returns generated from bonds. If it is so simple, then why is it that the bulk of global investment money still sits in bonds? Investing may be simple, but it is not easy. Fresh in the mind of global equity investors is the massive loss suffered in 2008 when they saw almost half their wealth disappear overnight. Since then central bankers around the world

have unleashed unprecedented stimulus in order to try and promote economic growth and employment, this without much success to-date. So, although inflation concerns seem well founded, the Japanese experience of 20+ years of deflation serves to remind investors that this is not a one way bet. There is risk; however equity investors are being paid to take the risk with the equity risk premium now well above its longterm average. For the bold investor there appears to be a rather obvious trade, which the “herd” are ignoring.

Why is diesel so expensive? NIKITA SYLVESTER Although motorists and commuters gasp each time they hear the words “fuel price increase”, it has become a common occurrence. Petrol and diesel prices have indeed increased again yesterday (6 March) by 81c and 53,38c respectively. With the rapidly increasing price of fuel the Cape Town Regional Chamber of Commerce and Industry feel that this constant incline calls for a recalculation of how these prices are determined. Fred Jacobs, president of the chamber, explained that the system was devised years prior in different political and economical circumstances. The formula might even be outdated. “Business is particularly concerned about the price of diesel which is a basic input cost for agriculture and transport. It affects the price of every item of food in the supermarket,” said Jacobs. According to Peter Hugo, chairman of the chamber’s transport portfolio committee, the formula for

calculating fuel prices was a complicated one. “There should be scope for improvements and adjustments to bring it into line with changing circumstances,” he said. He continued in stating that the situation has worsened in the last 15 years with diesel now being the more expensive fuel despite the fact that it was the cheaper one to produce. “This should make us review the way the diesel price is calculated and also the various taxes on diesel. The government thought there was a good case to reduce taxes on diesel in 1998 and we think there is an even better case now,” said Hugo.

HHCC locked in a power battle with Kensington When Hottentots-Holland Cricket Club’s (HHCC) first team continue their game against Kensington on Saturday they will have to up their ante if they want to win and stand a chance of promotion. HHCC batted first after losing the toss and scored 159/4 in 60 overs. The best batsmen were Yaseen Jakoet 49*, Ruben Mathhews 28, Riedwaan Bayat 26 and Rida Rhoda 26*. Kensington went to bat and declared on 137/9 in over 59. The best bowlers for HHCC were Emaad Opperman 10-3-30, Rafeeq Baderoen 10-2-22 and Yaseen Jakoet 10-2-26. HHCC started their second innings with a lead of 22 runs and ended the first day on 17/0, which including the first innings lead, they now have a lead of 39/0. It was an all cat-and-mouse game with a 0.5 point difference between the teams chasing second spot on the log. At the end of play HHCC moved to third place in the league, however it’s the all important win that grants the victor an extra 15 points. The current point status is that Kensing-

ton are ahead of Hottentots-Holland with 0.03 points. HHCC’s Assassins (second team) beat Rondebosch by 100 runs in their away game on Saturday. HHCC batted first and scored 169/7 in 35 overs. The best batsmen were Wayne Cloete 35, Dawood Josephs 20 and Ebrahim Pedro 18. HHCC bowled Rondebosch out for 69 winning the match by 100 runs. The best bowler was Waqar Joseph with 7-4-20. The HHCC Strikers (third team) played log leaders St Augustines away and scraped through to a six-run win. The Strikers played the log leaders and batted first scoring 153/7 in their allotted 35 overs. Ebrahim Sha 52, Noor Baderoen 29 and Aqib Achmat 21 were the best batsmen on the day. This was a hard-fought close encounter by the Strikers and in the end showed character from HHCC who won the match by six runs. The best bowlers for the Strikers were Abubakr Rhoda 4-5-10, Noor Baderoen 7-3-21 and Zacharia Baderoen 4-2-18.

Pirates fight hard to beat experienced Battswood Pirates got back to their winning ways in their match against Battswood, played at Radloff Park on Saturday, with a 7-4 win. In a rather uneventful game Pirates struggled to pick up momentum after opening up a early two run lead. The left handed pitching combination of Brad de Waal and Damian Perkins proved too tricky for an experienced Battswood team and kept the opposition at bay. Midway through the game both teams picked up momentum but a strong defensive performance by Pirates gave them the edge and prevented Battswood from responding to the runs Pirates began to tally. Despite a last minute surge by the team from Chucker Road, Pirates held on to secure a win.

The masters came up against a very strong Kenfac Phillies team on Saturday and lost the match by 23-4. Despite being understaffed (seven players), the club’s u.10 team proved just too good for Silvertree and overpowered them 26-8. The second side and u.14 teams did not play this weekend. The Helderberg Pirates Baseball Club invite all players, family members and friends of the club to join them on Sunday 10 March for their annual ‘Chip and Putt’ golf day. The day was a successful fund raiser last year and the club are hoping that it will once again be a great success. To enter a four ball phone Jared Uys on 071 866 9652.

HHCC celebrates 60th anniversary Established in 1952, the Hottentots-Holland Cricket Club (HHCC) celebrates 60 years of existence, sacrifices, dedication and team spirit. In honour of this milestone, the club’s executive committee and members have decided to celebrate this occasion with the elders of the community and those who contributed to the success of this Strand-based club. “This is quite a big deal for us that the club has survived against all odds, despite coming up against very tough conditions,” said Ziyaad Salie, chairman of Club 60, a group initiated by the club to conduct relevant research for the event. He added that the community is what kept HHCC together all these years. To show their respect and appreciation, the members of the club would like to invite all current members as well as those who have been members in the past 60 years to attend an “evening of thanks” on Saturday 9 March at the Iqrah Learning Centre hall, Strand. The main guest speakers for the evening will be Beresford Williams, president of the Western Province Cricket Association,

former South African cricketer, Omar Henry, and Professor ASM Karaan, dean of the agriscience faculty at Stellenbosch University. Also in attendance will be some of the members of the Cobras cricket team. According to club members, due to their constant battle with vandalism in the area, their cricket facilities have suffered considerably. They were fortunate enough to receive four practise nets which members say are a real asset to them. HHCC currently play their home matches at the Gustrouw sports fields and at the old naval fields in Gordon’s Bay but are in the process of accepting a new turf at Abattoir sports grounds. “We hope this attempt of moving our main games to the Abattoir sports grounds will be a success and ask our community to stand behind us as we try to uphold and protect our honour by regarding the new facilities as ours – the Strand community,” said Salie. For further information regarding the event, contact Ziyaad Salie, 072 170 7613, or Ebrahim Aziz, 076 066 5594.

‘Department should withdraw all treknet fishing licences’ to save our fish On Monday morning I was notified about another massive trek of four tons of fish, mostly kob and elf from Strandfontein beach. This trek was apparently carried out by licensed treknet fisherman. There are so many shore anglers that witness these treks and who are so disappointed that these trek fishermen can keep thousands of elf and kob while individual anglers are only allowed to keep four fish of each of these species and have to return all undersize fish. I believe that these treknet fishermen have wiped out a number of complete shoals of fish that have entered our bay which is why these species are so scarce of late. If the authorities from the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries are real-

ly serious about conservation then it is time to withdraw all treknet fishing licenses. More positive news is that I received several reports of good size kob being caught on live bait at the Strandfontein and Swartklip areas on Saturday during an all-night competition. A number of kob were also caught from the old Gordon’s Bay harbour wall. The winner of the competition was Gideon Kriel who weighed in a 2,5kg kob. This fish earned the lucky anglers R5 000 and a custom-made wet suit. On Sunday there were also a few kob and geelbek caught on Blake’s Beach as well as two legal size white steenbras caught by a father and his son. Anglers fishing from small boats and kayaks in the popular venues around the Strand

area have also caught a few kob and the odd geelbek, the best being a 4 kg kob caught in the Poort on Sunday. It was recently reported that the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries is in complete disarray and an investigation about irregularities within the department is to be carried out soon. During a recent survey by Stellenbosch University it was proved that recreational boat fishing and shore angling is the best money spinner for the government. The Western Province Deep Sea Angling Association held their annual prize giving function at the Cape Boat & Ski Boat Club on Saturday night. Awards went to the following people: Atlantic Boat Club’s (ABC’s) Inshore Trophy for Best Performance by a Lady: A van Staden of Overberg Boat Club, the Top Novice Angler trophy was awarded to seven-year-old Carla Rautmann of Cape Boat and Skiboat Club (CB&SBC). West League: The Hout Bay Yacht Club Tro-

phy for Best performance by a Junior went to Sam Brown (CB&SBC), Tackle Box Trophy for Heaviest Fish: Jay Smith (CB&SBC), CB&SBC Trophy Top Angler: Gus Rautmann (CB&SBC), False Bay Yacht Club Trophy for Top Boat: Daniel Hughes Relentless (GBBAC), Atlantic Boat Club (ABC) Trophy: Top Club (Gordon’s Bay Boat Angling Club – GBBAC), South League: Kingfisher Trophy – Best Performance Junior: Juandre Geldenhuys (GBBAC), GBBAC Trophy for Heaviest Fish Junior: Jay Smith (CB&SBC), Kennedy Trophy: Most Meritorious Catch: Jaundré Geldenhuis (GBBAC), OBC Trophy for Top Angler Inshore: Daniel Hughes (GBBAC), CB&SBC Trophy for Top Boat: Daniel Hughes (GBBAC) and Kiora Trophy for Top Club: GBBAC Offshore League: Rodger Bosman Trophy for Top Angler Offshore: Nic de Kock (ABC), Purglass Trophy for Most Meritorious Catch: Nic de Kock (ABC), CB&SBC Trophy for Top Boat: Kevin Hodgson on Cloud Nine (ABC), ABC Trophy: Top Club (ABC).

CSV golf day gains momentum Great news for all golfers around the Helderberg is that the ever popular DistrictMail CSV Construction golf day takes place at the Strand Golf Club on Friday 3 May.

The format of the competition will be a Four Ball Alliance Stableford with two scores to count. Plans are progressing at a pace, for what promises to be a fun, as well as, worthy event. DistrictMail will be publishing all the participating Four Ball companies logos as well ashole sponsors as from April as well as an article with logos and photos after the event. Following the tournament there will be a function and prize-giving. Funds raised from the golf day will go

Mikyla Josephs recently competed in the girls u.13 javelin event at the University of the Western Cape where she represented the Metropole East team and obtained her Western Province colours for primary schools. This past Saturday she competed for a Western Cape team against Boland and the South Western District. Despite suffering a hamstring injury she managed to push through resulting in her being selected to represent the Western Cape primary schools team at the South African championships to be held in Sasolburg from 14-16 March. “The downside, however, is that Western Province athletics informed us that they will not be able to contribute anything towards the R3 000 required to send Mikyla to Sasolburg,” her father Edward Josephs said. Anyone who would like to contribute or make a donation towards her expenses may phone Edward Josephs on 084 8387 466.

towards PATCH who are continually engaged in the prevention and treatment of child sexual abuse in the Helderberg. Companies wanting to participate in the golf day to raise funds for PATCH may help by either entering a team. Each four ball will cost R2 850, or companies may also contribute with cash donations, sponsor a hole for R1 750 or donate prizes for the prize giving. Junior cricket – Western Province or Boland? We are in a unique situation in the Helderberg when it comes to cricket because we are on the border of Boland and Western Province. For this reason there is a tug of war between the two provinces over junior cricket in particular. Currently all primary schools in the Helderberg play cricket in the WP and all the high schools play in the Boland, while clubs play in the WP. One of the drawbacks of this system is that some of the Helderberg’s top primary school players are not being selected for WP teams, or if they are, they are not given as much game time as players from the Cape Town area. WP’s view is why should they select a Helderberg player for a WP team and invest time and money in them only to see them leave

for another province once they get to high school? I suppose this is a valid point, but unfair on the cricketers. It would be a lot easier if our primary and high schools played for the same province, whether it be WP or Boland. This would a tough decision, but it would be a decision that could benefit the Helderberg region in many years to come. It could also be another way of keeping some of our top players in the Helderberg, rather than losing them once they get to high school. In years gone by, players who were selected to play for WP, went to high schools in the Cape Town area to stay in WP, meaning that the Helderberg lost many of these talented players. Each province has its own positives and

negatives and its own set of politics as well. But sticking with one province for primary and high school could well be the answer. We have very talented school cricketers in the Helderberg region – one has only look at the number of players that represent WP at primary school level and Boland at high school level in this area to prove this. The Helderberg region is also seen as one of the stronger regions in WP primary school cricket. This is a hot topic and something that should be given some thought.

Fans want 2013 SWCC struggle against Yorkshire season to start With mixed results for our local clubs in preseason matches, it’s pleasing to hear many coaches say that they are looking at the bigger picture and not just the scoreboard. St Georges were beaten by Wesbank in Malmesbury, Raithby beat Strand Pioneers, Strand beat All Saints, Sir Lowrians thumped Eerste River and Helderberg got their season off to a win over Ceres. With these matches taking place, numbers at the various training grounds have picked up and registration of players is in full swing. The Western Provinces Rugby Football Union’s executive committee member Reuben Riffel, who is in charge of the Stellenbosch/Helderberg region, will hold his first meeting at the Charles Morkel Stadium on 12 March with club chairmen from the various clubs. I think it’s a great initiative by the Union. Thelo Wakefield is slowly putting structures in place that he “pitched’’ to the clubs before the elections. Wakefield and Danny Jones (General Manager of Amateur Rugby in the WP) will meet with Strand Pioneers management this Friday night. Games to look forward to this weekend include: Strand travelling to Hawston, Strand United away in Paarl and Helderberg face up to a Sports Foundation Squad in a funfilled day. With the fixtures for the 2013 season now finalised excitement is running high for the league matches to start. A Bok Smart Course will be held at Gustrouw this Friday night.

SWCC made a reasonable start with the bat, getting to tee at 34-0 in 21 overs. Then, with the need to up the scoring rate, there was a dramatic collapse and SWCC was all out for 71 runs. Francois Kilian obtained the top score with 42 runs. SWCC had to bowl another 12 overs to see out the day’s play, but did not take any wickets. Yorkshire has an overall lead of 115 runs when play resumes on Saturday.

The members of Somerset West Cricket Club’s (SWCC) first team have their backs up against the wall in their match against Yorkshire and will need to pull out all the stops. Last week Yorkshire batted first and scored 163 after being 113/1 at lunch. SWCC made a good comeback thanks to Francois Kilian who took six wickets for 34 runs, in just over 11 overs. Rudi Bischoff and James Wilshere also put in good supporting efforts.

CRICKET: WESTERN PROVINCE 1C LEAGUE

Tough task awaits Helderberg Helderberg Cricket Club will fight with everything they’ve got to win their match against Milnerton, which continues at the Helderzicht sports complex on Saturday. Helderberg, who are the current Western Province Cricket Association’s 1 C log leaders, need maximum batting points from this gameto maintain their lead on the log. Close behind them are Tygerberg (115.25) and Edgmead (115.12). Helderberg lost the toss and were asked to bat first. The visitors cashed in early to soon have Helderberg reeling on 15/4. They continued to fight, but were all out for 93 runs. Player/coach Mario Solomons rallied his troops before they went out to field and urged them to dig deep to try and reverse what happened and salvage a win from the match. His appeal fell on the ears of the evergreen fast bowler Adrian van Reenen who ripped through Milnerton’s top order to bag six wickets for 25 runs in 12 overs. Van Reenen was well supported by youngster Wilton Hindley who also took two wickets and Milnerton were all out for 82. In their second innings Helderberg were 86/4 at stumps and will have to put in a sterling effort to win this penultimate game and hope the other two top teams don’t stretch the gap to far. The Strand Autospares Player of the day went to Adrian van Reenen.
