SIR LOWRYSPAS: GRUONGELUK

STRAND: GASLEKKASIE

‘Selfstabber’ trial in November ALLAN Mayne (47), who claimed he’d been attacked in the underground parking area of Somerset Mall on 12 June, appeared in the Somerset West court last Friday. He is expected to enter a plea on Friday 2 November. After the alleged attack, a message claiming a man had been brutally stabbed at the mall spread rapidly among social networks such as Facebook, as well as email and instant messaging services such as BBM and WhatsApp. However, security footage of the parking area

shows a man’s arm moving in a stabbing motion toward his body. After a few minutes, he struggles to get up and then falls over the railing near the circle at the underground parking section, where he was later found. Mayne was arrested at his Somerset West home on Friday 22 June and charged with defeating the ends of justice. He appeared in court on the same day and was granted R1 000 bail. His bail conditions stipulate that he must report to Somerset West Police Station every Friday between 06:00 and 18:00.

Missing a fish? THE police are calling on the owners of any missing koi fish in the Somerset West, Strand, Sir Lowry’s Pass and Gordon’s Bay areas to get in touch with the station. If you’d like to report a case to the officers of Gordon’s Bay Police Station, you can do so by dialing 021 856 2677.

NEWS SUMMARY A GRUESOME accident on the N2 between Gordon’s Bay and Sir Lowry’s Pass claimed the life of a 25-year-old woman from Stellenbosch. The incident happened on Tuesday at 08:10 when a truck crashed into the Nissan bakkie of Thelana Kotze. According to eye-witnesses, it appears as if the brakes of the truck had failed as it came down Sir Lowry’s Pass. The truck then collided with Kotze’s bakkie, dragging her vehicle a further 100 metres before ending on its side. Kotze was a grade 1 teacher at Somerstrand College in Gordon’s Bay. She was the only occupant in the vehicle at the time of the accident. - page 1 A FIRE broke out at the popular Farmhouse coffee shop at the Trading Post centre in Somerset West on Friday 31 August. The owner, Christo Franken, says he received two phone calls from Gordon’s Bay security at 19:00, as well as from the owner of Chez Max – a neighbouring restaurant – informing him of the fire. Upon his arrival, the fire department had everything under control. According to Theo Layne, Fire and Rescue spokesperson, the cause of the fire is an electrical short circuit. The damage is yet to be estimated by the insurance company. Franken says the shop will also be getting a face-lift when they repair the damage. - page 5

STRAND: ROBBERY

Suspect arrested

High-speed chase

METICULOUS police work after a business robbery in Strand on Tuesday last week resulted in the arrest of a Grabouw man. Last week DistrictMail reported that a woman working at Incredible Technology Deals in the Co-Op Building in Beach Road had been threatened with a knife, choked until she was unconscious and tied up with computer cables. Upon regaining consciousness, she managed to attract the attention of the staff of the neighbouring businesses. An undisclosed amount of money and some of the woman’s personal items were stolen. Investigation of a case of business robbery led the police to a man in Grabouw. According to a police report, some of the stolen items were found in his possession. The suspect was arrested on 6 September and appeared in the Strand Magistrate’s Court the following day. Station commander colonel Shaun van Wyk thanked the community for the information that led to the arrest. People with additional information are urged to phone detective warrant officer Jaco Snyman on 021 854 9100.

SEVEN men appeared in the Strand Magistrate’s Court yesterday (Wednesday) in connection with a business robbery that took place last week. At midday on Thursday 6 September, a group of men entered the Strand Cash and Carry in Main Road. According to a police report, the men assaulted the cashiers and demanded money. “They made their getaway in a bronze-coloured Toyota Avanza with an undisclosed amount of cash, cartons of cigarettes and other items taken from the business,” says Constable Mbulelo Mafuna, spokesperson for the Strand police. The police sped to the scene, and the drama culminated in a high-speed chase along Main Road. The men were cornered in Broadway Boulevard, near the Altena Road intersection in Strand. “Firearms, cash and various items from the Cash and Carry were found in their possession.” At the time of going to print, the outcome of the suspects’ court appearance was not yet known.

Caught in a flash Police recovered the stolen items.

A 23-YEAR-OLD man from Grabouw was arrested and charged with public indecency last Friday. According to the Strand police, the man is alleged to have exposed his genitals to two women on Strand beach, near the water slide. One of the women, who was walking her dog, informed her husband about the incident, and he and others gave chase and caught the man. The police made an arrest soon afterwards. The suspect appeared in the Strand Magistrate’s Court on Monday; he was released, and warned to be in court again on Tuesday 23 October, when his case is expected to be heard.

This was the geta way vehicle used in the robbery.

SOMERSET WEST: CYCLING ACCIDENT

Cyclist survives collision NIKITA SYLVESTER

LEARNING LEADERS: SHARE, an adult learning centre in Somerset West, recently won a gold award at the Western Cape Education Department’s Metro Adult Learners’ Week awards ceremony. The pu pils and staff who were awarded certificates and trophies at the ceremony are (from left) Lena Joos, Katriena Kok, Florence Davids (Afrikaans teacher coordinator of levels 1 to 3), Elizabeth Khombane and Lin Helme (centre manager).

SOMERSET West cyclist SanMarie Vosloo-Stander (36) is recovering at Mediclinic Vergelegen after being flung from her bicycle in an accident. Vosloo-Stander says that she does not remember much of what happened that morning as she lost consciousness after the collision. Vosloo-Stander’s cycling buddy, Paul Cox, says they had decided to go for a training ride on Friday morning last week. “We started off near the Steynrust bridge and were just going for a quick ride along the R44 from Somerset West to Stellenbosch and back,” explains Cox. He says they were both riding well inside the yellow line when the accident occurred. Vosloo-Stander recalls seeing a very large vehicle passing her so

closely she could feel the wind in its wake. Attached to the vehicle was a trailer, and one of its wheels edged all the way inside the yellow line. “The trailer clipped me from the back and I flew over the bike.” She landed on the back of her head, causing her helmet to break and her skull to crack. She also sustained a brain haemorrhage, a fractured tibia and numerous bruises and lacerations all over her body. “I suffered a concussion and don’t remember much of what happened next. I remember hearing a voice, I remember the grass poking me in my face, I remember being in the back of the ambulance and being wheeled into ER.” She was later told of a man who had stopped to pray for her alongside the road just after the accident. Cox says that Vosloo-Stander is a very experience cyclist who knows what she is doing, and the incident came as quite a shock.

“I feared for her life. I was very concerned,” says Cox, who added that the paramedics arrived within minutes and were “absolutely brilliant”. He explains that the driver of the vehicle returned to the scene and took full responsibility for what had happened. The driver, who wishes to remain anonymous, says he would really like to visit Vosloo-Stander in hospital. “I am so sorry about what happened,” the driver says. “I feel very guilty. “I hope she gets better soon, and I will try to repay her as best I can.” Vosloo-Stander, who has been cycling for the past five years, says she is just grateful to have survived. “It happened so quickly. It could have been much worse. “The prayers and blessings helped so much; now I’m praying for a speedy recovery so that I can get back on my bicycle.”

SOMERSET-WES: BRAND

Koffiewinkel ly groot skade JAMEY THOMAS

’n

Residents say no to Strand casino ILLANA FRANTZ ABOUT 500 petition letters have been collected in opposition to a casino in Strand. This follows after neighbours and businesses around the building on the corner of Hammond Street and Gordon’s Bay Road received letters on 21 August, notifying them of plans to establish a casino. Ebrahim Adams, who lives right behind the building, says he discovered that only six of the closest neighbours and businesses had been notified. He then informed the rest of the community.

A community meeting on the matter was held in the Iqra Learning Centre last Wednesday. Adams, a former high school principal, says the gambling establishment, which will have a liquor licence, would offend the moral and religious convictions of the community. “We are concerned about the degradation of the community and a decline in moral standards as a whole,” says Adams, who has been living where he is for 40 years. The community fears a casino would have an impact on nearby schools and religious institutions. “This community is deeply

plagued by the evils of drug addiction, alcoholism, crime and unemployment,” Adams says. “I believe such an establishment will add to these social ills, and we cannot afford permission for it to be granted.” Cheryl Walters, director for planning and building development in the City of Cape Town, confirms an application to operate a pub on erf 11381 was received on 7 August. “Thus far, the district office has received two objections to the application. This is still an open application, thus the City cannot provide any further comments at this time.” The closing date for comments and objections is 21 September. Another meeting is being planned for next week. Phone Adams on 082 202 0579 or email adamse@telkomsa.net.

Chilanga children get brand new wheels

THURSDAY 6 September will long be remembered by 14 children at Chilanga Riding School as the day they each received a new wheelchair.

The wheelchairs were donated by six sponsors after LeeMcQueen of Guts 2 Glory – a non-profit foundation whose main aim is to raise funds for disabled and poor athletes – made an appeal to each of them. Lee, who is also an athlete and competes in natural bodybuilding competitions, says every year she works to think up innovative and exciting ways to raise funds for people with disabilities. She calls it her Crazy Chick Challenge (CCC). This year she turned her focus on Chilanga Riding School in Somerset West, a non-profit organisation that offers horse riding to improve the quality of life for more than 200 poor children with mental and physical disabilities. This year, she says, “My CCC was to get 10 companies to sponsor a wheelchair and get 10 able-bodied athletes to race against Clifford Martin, a wheelchair athlete. “My aim was to teach people how difficult it is to be disabled, and to be able to donate the chairs to Chilanga,” Lee says. “I sent out a request for companies to sponsor the wheelchairs, and the following companies participated and donated: Business

Management Training College of SA (five wheelchairs), PharmaChoice (four wheelchairs), Philwest Helderberg (one wheelchair), JAG Foundation (one wheelchair), Guts 2 Glory (two wheelchairs) and The Real Thing (one wheelchair). “The turnout for walkers and runners wasn’t that great, and we made no money, but we achieved our goal of 10 wheelchairs. “Then PharmaChoice surprised us on the day with four more chairs.” Lee says Groot Constantia Wine Farm sponsored the venue. To see more about the race, find Guts2Glorysport on Facebook or visit www.guts2glory.co.za. Lee’s involvement with people with disabilities started when her son broke his back in a quad bike accident and was almost disabled. Thankfully, he made a full recovery, but the event was a turning point. “It was there and then that I vowed if his life was spared I would dedicate my life to disabled folk. “One day I met Kathy Ashwell, who’d heard about what I was doing, and she introduced me to Sally Kluth, the founder of Chilanga. “I was amazed by what Sally was doing, and try to assist where I can.” For more information about Chilanga call Sally on 021 852 1467 or Megan Campbell on 074 182 1866. SIR LOWRY’S PASS: ANIMALS

7

Hadida’s happy landing A GOOD samaritan has taken pity on an injured hadida that blew onto his porch during a rain storm a few weeks ago.

José Rodrigues, who lives on the Knorhoek farm in Sir Lowry’s Pass, says he found the bird with a broken leg and took it in. He approached the World of Birds in Hout Bay to find out who could help him treat the bird’s leg. They referred him to the Klapmuts Bird Clinic, and upon speaking to Dr GF de Beer, he says, he was immediately impressed with the man’s obvious caring nature. On 5 September the bird, Wally Hadida as José fondly refers to him, was admitted to the clinic. “There they took x-rays of his broken leg, and an operation

had to be done. The doctor inserted a pin into his leg, which has to be taken out again in a month’s time.” José is full of praise for the doctor, who handled the case with sensitivity and care. But to José, the cherry on the cake came when Dr De Beer slashed the price of the whole operation by more than half. The bill amounted to over R4 000, but José only ended up having to pay R1 400 for Dr De Beer’s expertise. Asked why he decided to take care of the bird, José states, “What if it was a baby that had been dropped on my doorstep? I would have taken care of it, so the same goes for Wally.” José says he didn’t do any of this to get attention – he simply wants to highlight that there are still people out there with caring hearts.

Wally Hadida is recovering well.

EDITORIAL COMMENT

Healing hands help hadida

LETTERS

‘A total disregard for the law is what kills’ I REFER to the street poster and the subsequent article on page 3 of DistrictMail (6 September). The poster blares out: “Freak accidents kills two”. In my humble opinion, I do not see how the sequence of accidents as reported could be referred to as “freak”. One pedestrian knocked over and killed, driver was allegedly drunk. . . that is not a freak accident. Then, at the same incident, a bit later another driver is arrested for rubber-necking whilst drunk, is apprehended and put into a police

van. Along comes another vehicle, slams into that police van and kills the apprehended driver inside the van. That might be a form of poetic justice, but not a freak accident either. My point is that these are not freak accidents, these are caused by alcohol abuse. Drinking and driving equals murder. A total disregard for the law is what kills. With the silly season soon upon us it would be an idea for the newspaper to publish shock pictures of accidents that were the result of drunk driving.

Give statistics, let the victims’ families be interviewed and tell how their lives have been destroyed. All the blameless victims – children with no parents, parents with no children, and those wheelchair-bound for the rest of their shortened lives, all because of that “one for the road” mentality. Maybe, just maybe, you will make a difference, and if people have been drinking they will think twice before getting into their cars.

BOBBY SAVOSNICK GORDON’S BAY

IT’s really heartwarming to know that, despite the troubled and difficult times in which we are living, there are still people who genuinely care for creatures that cannot fend for themselves. On page 7 of this week’s DistrictMail, we feature a story about two caring people who took pity on a young hadida, which had broken its leg, and helped nurse it back to health. Hadidas are not everybody’s favourite birds, as they make a huge racket and their faeces make a big mess. For these reasons many people either chase these big harmless birds away or, even worse, shoot them. But one caring Helderberg farmer showed compassion for the young bird and took it in. Realising the bird had broken its leg, he was referred to a vet at the Klapmuts Bird Clinic. After x-rays it was determined that an operation was necessary, and a pin was inserted into the bird’s leg. The vet who performed the intricate surgery then surprised the farmer by charging him less than half of the bill. These two inspiring and caring people really deserve praise for their unselfish and caring attitudes. The bird is recovering well and being fed on a diet of lean mince meat, antibiotics and vitamins, and is well on the road to a full recovery.

Sies man. Kind deed at Graham’s is the hit of the party I WOULD like to take this opportunity to thank Graham’s Appliances for their exceptional service. On Saturday 25 August I woke up only to discover, to my dismay that a very important, small washer on my dishwasher was missing. I frantically went out in search of one as I had invited 29 guests to a birthday party at my house later that day.

Just before 12:00 I arrived at Graham’s, stood there forlornly and explained my dilemma to the gentleman working at the spares counter that morning. He said that they had no stock of this little elusive part and my heart sank. I was told to wait and, a minute later, he was back and popped a little washer into my hand that he

had taken off an old machine in the back. I offered to pay for the part but was told to “please enjoy your party”. That is what I call going beyond the call of duty. This gesture ensured that the evening was a huge success. When in doubt, call Graham’s!

Tight budget holds back road resurfacing WOULD you please investigate why the many potholes in Gustrouw, especially in Ouma Fransman Avenue and surrounds, are only patched and the roads not resurfaced completely? My mom stays in this area and I know she is a diligent ratepayer. Surely she and all the other residents deserve the service delivery they pay for.

SHIREEN SEDRES

Councillor Brett Herron, mayoral committee member for transport, roads and stormwater, responds:

The City of Cape Town understands the frustration of residents in Gustrouw, but it is unfortunately not possible to resurface all of the roads that are in need in Cape Town during the current financial year. Interim measures, such as patching and filling, are therefore the best solution. Potholes result from the combination of a number of factors: cracking of asphalt surfacing, water penetration, traffic loading, loss of surfacing, poor repair work, poor adhesion between base and seal levels, et cetera.

At this time, limited budget prevents the Roads and Stormwater Department from resurfacing or rehabilitating the road during the current financial year. As soon as funding becomes available, extensive work will be conducted. In the interim, the department will continue to repair potholes as and when they occur. Residents are reminded to please assist the department by reporting potholes as soon as they notice them to the City’s call centre on 0860 103 089.

A word of thanks and a word of disgust after the attack WELL done and thank you to the doctors and staff of Helderberg Hospital. I would like to thank all who attended to one of my colleagues,

who was attacked and stabbed on the way to the station. Your manner showed kindness, professionalism, and attention to detail. To the thirty-something people

who heard the screams, and who choose to just stand around and do nothing, I hope this never ever happens to you!

GRATEFUL COLLEAGUE

GB licence centre is well worth the weather RECENTLY my husband and I had to renew our drivers’ licences. The day we chose to visit the centre in Gordon’s Bay was very cold, windy and rainy, so it was a nice surprise not to have to wait for long in a queue for eye testing, which was done by two very

efficient gentlemen. Our licences were ready for collection after three and a half weeks. Again, the weather was dreadful but the friendly service of the ladies at the collection department more than made up for having to

go out in such weather. Please keep up your friendly, efficient service to the public, and congratulations to the head of the centre – your staff are a compliment to you.

PEUGEOT South Africa has appointed two new brand ambassadors – and a more diametrically-opposed pair is hard to imagine! On the one hand, soccer star and outgoing Orlando Pirates Player of the Season, Andile Jali, gets a Peugeot 4008 to drive, and on the other, Afrikaans pop icon Kurt Darren can look forward to a 508 GT. If the two ambassadors represent the opposite ends of South Africa’s diverse culture, then the two cars represent the opposite ends of Peugeot’s increasingly broad product rang Says Peugeot South Africa’s Managing Director, Francis Harnie: “The choice of Andile and Kurt as our brand ambassadors for 2012/13 is evidence that

Peugeot is once again part and parcel of South African life, and we believe that they’re both true to the values of our brand. “Their passion for their chosen profession makes them admired and respected, not to mention the fact that they’re seen as stylish and influential.” Jali is already familiar with the Peugeot brand, having enjoyed the use of a 508 as part of his prize for being chosen as the 2011 Orlando Pirates Player of the Season. Being recognised as such was proof of the midfielder’s popularity with a broad cross-section of the sports public and he is highly regarded as a role model. A 4008 is the ultimate crossover and perfect for a

young man on the way up, thanks to its sexy good looks, go-anywhere ability - by virtue of its selectable four-wheel-drive, and effortless performance. Darren is also a firm favourite with the public thanks to his clean-cut image, and the lanky Pretoria ‘boytjie’ appeals to young and old alike. He’s looking forward to his first experience of the Peugeot brand, and with a potent and luxurious 508 GT sports sedan – the flagship of the passenger car range – he won’t be disappointed. “We’re very proud to have Kurt and Andile on board, and are certain they’re going to have many miles of happy motoring with Peugeot,” concluded Harnie.

34 Distrikspos Audi A4 3.0TFSi quattro S-Line: the cute shuffle 13 September, 2012

HANJO STIER ARE we alone in the universe? Who shot JR? Can a man do the dishes without complaining? What’s the meaning of life? These may be questions of grave importance, but they pale in comparison to the following: should you buy a diesel or petrol car? Time for a quick refresher course: internal combustion engines use a highly explosive mixture of liquid fuel and air to create controlled explosions, which drive a combination of pistons, rods and gears to provide your car’s motion. Petrols and diesels both follow this concept, but have some crucial differences. Diesels work under higher pressure (compression) so they don’t require spark plugs because the coarser liquid spontaneously combusts. The upside is superior twisting power (torque) while the downside is a lack of speed – a diesel’s compression won’t allow it to rev as high as a petrol motor. In recent years, both applications have benefited from computerised engine management, direct and high-pressure injection, plus the rediscovered forced induction provided by superchargers or turbochargers. The latter has become a prerequisite for a modern diesel as the two make quite a cute couple. Driven by exhaust gases and prone to lagging, the modern turbo is brilliantly complimented by a diesel’s low-speed clout. Its petrol sister requires turbos with twin-scroll technology or the instant res-

ponse of the perpetual supercharger to suit its love of higher revolutions. Why did I put you through this little science lecture? Simple – we just tested two very similar cars whose only difference was the fuel they require. A few weeks ago I drove a black Audi A4 3.0TDi (turbo-diesel) and last week I found myself in a dark grey A4 3.0TFSi

month ago made a better noise and both cars use the 7-speed double-clutch DSG gearbox to viciously launch off the line, shift gears instantaneously or cruise at such low revs that my father questioned the merits of the rev-counter. Although we couldn’t source both vehicles at the same time, their looks, specs and interiors are identical. The only diffe-

SPEED. This A4 3.0 V6 engine is helped on its way by an added supercharger. Power is now a meaty 200kw. O-100kph blasts past in 5,4 seconds. Pic: Galimoto Media

(supercharged petrol). Last-named has a 3-litre petrol V6 which is spoon-fed by a twin-intercooled supercharger across its entire rev range to produce 200kW (272hp) or 400Nm. Power delivery with torque vectoring is instant (which offended the driver of a CFM-registered A6) with the only disadvantage being a slightly muted exhaust note. Amazingly, the A4 3.0 TDi (180kW/500Nm turbo-diesel V6) I drove a

rences will be your colour choice and the amount of ticks you make on the pricey options list. Being of a quattro (four-wheel-drive) disposition, these cars require you to adapt to their low-speed steering shuffle and fall in love with their incredible highspeed road holding. Ride comfort is commendable if somewhat firm, steering feedback is good, the cabins are superbly built and both sedans felt absolutely rock solid.

Motors Motoring

The diesel carries extra weight due to its cast-iron engine block (to resist the higher pressures) and I felt it produced a little more under-steer before the Quattro and computers stepped in. They both have massive boots, excellent brakes and a start/stop system, but let’s not avoid the major issue any further: consumption. The petrol A4 has unbelievably good torque, but uses more revs and more fuel to get going, resulting in our daily average of about 11 L/100 km (claimed 8,4) as opposed to the diesel’s eight (claimed 5,7). Both cars are limited to 250 km/h and the petrol TFSi gets to 100 km/h half a second faster (5,4). This is balanced by the TDi’s superior torque output which just manages to trump the TFSi’s pulling power in daily traffic, especially low-revving acceleration. I desperately wanted to award the petrol car the prize for drivability, but I simply can’t. They’re very close and I think the TDi takes the win. Their power delivery is remarkably similar, the diesel sounds more gruff, is more fuel efficient and even R1 000 cheaper than the R504 000 TFSi petrol model. Warranties (1-year/unlimited km) and service plans (5-year/100 000 km) are also identical which is why (gulp) I would go for the diesel. I even wanted to declare the 3.0 TFSi pointless, but you need to consider two things. Firstly, 50ppm diesel may not be readily available in remote areas, and secondly, some people (like my better half) simply prefer the smooth and quiet petrol. - Galimoto Media

Ford introduced their top-selling Figo onto the South African market back in 2010. Since then it has won over the hearts of many students, first time buyers and budget seeking individuals. Ford has sold thousands over the past two years and the Figo’s recipe is proven spot-on. The Figo is not so much a brand new car as an extension of a previous-generation Fiesta (which it is based on). The standard 1.4 Ambiente retails for R118 670, while the 1.4 Trend comes in at R130 000. Ford also offers a rather brilliant 1.4 TDCI diesel derivative and that will set you back R132 620. I recently had a go at what Novel Ford in Paarl calls a Figo Novelsport edition. They took the standard Figo (Ambiente or Trend) and just added to its “bling” factor and street cred by slapping on some sporty extras. The add-ons start off with the most noticeable 17” black rims. First thoughts where that they are a bit too bling, but after seeing them on a clean white Figo in the sun, my mind changed rather quickly. Novel Ford went further by lowering the suspension, adding a freeflow exhaust, a roof spoiler, foglights and some slick decals/stickers. All this can be

yours for an extra R12 000. If you are an avid “street racer” or just finishing school the deep growl from the freeflow exhaust will put a smile on your

changed. That isn’t exactly a bad thing. Seats are comfortable, but could do with more side bolstering. I found the gear-lever a bit high, but the shifts felt se-

face. The larger rims and lowered suspension have some drawbacks too. Potholes or speedbumps are not welcome when you drive a Novelsport Figo. The comfortable ride on the standard car has now disappeared and the lowered suspension just adds to the misery. On the interior side nothing has

cure and solid. Steering feedback is helped by the bigger wheels, although the steering still felt light. A good cd/mp3 player with useable buttons completes the dashboard facia. The sound quality from the speakers are also acceptable for a car in this price bracket. The boot and petrol lid switches are

reached from the driver seats. I would however like to have the electric front windows which are standard on the Trend model. Head room is ample although the rear leg room (as suspected) was a bit tight when carrying larger passengers. Fuel economy is also hampered by the large wheels and the freeflow exhaust. One tends to accelerate harder because of the noise it makes, but be prepared to suffer on your tank range. You will lose between 100-150 km and have a harsher ride. Acceleration from 0-100kph takes 13,5 seconds and the little Figo runs out of steam close to 170kph. Standard features include ABS with EBD, two front airbags and key-operated central locking. These safety features make the Figo an attractive option and puts it above its main rival the VW Polo Vivo (ABS & EBD are optional extras on the Vivo). Other rivals include the Toyota Etios and Hyundai’s i10. Every Figo comes with a standard 4 year/120 000 km warranty and 3 year/100 000 km roadside assistance. Service plans are available but not standard. The Novelsport Ambiente retails for R129 900 and the Trend and TDCi models are also on offer with the same kit. Having driven the standard and the diesel variants I’ll still put my money on the 1.4 Ambiente as it is still the best value in this segment. For more information on the Figo or any other Ford and Mazda vehicles contact Novel Auto on 021 870 7000.

BMW 640d: the tasty presence HANJO STIER CARS come in all shapes and sizes but, more importantly, with wildly differing applications or purposes. Some are cheap, some are fast, others are rugged and a handful are fast ’n flashy. You get few that do it all and even fewer that do it well, so I’m always happy to review a car with limited applications. In fact, I’m not just happy to review them, I’m prone to love them and occasionally buy them. The new BMW 6-Series is just such a car although it’s ever-soseverely out of my reach. All it claims to be is a sophisticated GT, a suave grand tourer to whoosh you and your significant other through the countryside in style and comfort. That’s why I love big luxury coupés: they are engineered for (apologies, Jaguar) space, grace and pace. Plus, they float between sensible sedans and sexy sports/super cars - also price-wise. The GT is for discerning drivers who want to treat themselves to more than a luxury sedan, but to less than a brash and unpractical sports car. I wasn’t too crazy about the looks of the previous Six Series yet its new-age grace eventually

grew on me. This latest generation didn’t look very promising in digital media, but cuts a dashing figure in real life. I wouldn’t call it stunning; however, the car has presence, smooth lines and interesting details. Even dull ’n dreary white, the colour of delivery bakkies, couldn’t ruin the car’s distinctive features which blend well into the BMW design language: the bulging nose, those trick headlights, profiles with organic curves and strong creases which flow into a complicated rear end with groovy light clusters. Open one of the long doors and you’ll immediately notice the following: the exterior hides its size well, as there’s loads of room inside. The rear seats are a bit cramped because, let’s face it, this car is all about the driver and passenger who enjoy acres of space and a beautifully curved dashboard like those in BMWs of days past. Our test vehicle was partly trimmed with red leather (R10 900) which made for a very tasty combination with black leather and silver inlays. Real metal and red stitching drew the same attention as crisp displays and superb finishes – even after 11 500 km and countless testers, this car felt expensive and brand new.

There are many colours and extras to choose from including the blow-your-mind Bang & Olufsen stereo for a blow-yourmind R49 800. Everything’s automated and for the technically-challenged amongst us, the more complicated stuff (self park, surround view, lane assist, head-up display, speed limit recognition, night view, active cruise control) is optional and selectable. BMW’s iDrive infotainment system is reasonably intuitive and well integrated into the new, flat ’n shiny instrument panel with multi-colour dials and highresolution multi-function displays. The fat steering wheel is loaded with buttons and turns a super-quick (R21 800 option), relatively light, but direct mechanism. Before that happens, you’ll have to start the 640d’s engine which is actually a 3-litre turbodiesel straight-six worth an astonishing 230kW (313hp) or a simply staggering 630Nm of maximum torque. From 0-100 km/h takes just 5,3 seconds (we clocked 5,6) and top speed is the usual limited 250 km/h. All this power is sent to the rear wheels via a clever 8-speed automatic gearbox with shift paddles and various drive modes. Do yourself a favour and fork out another R34 500 for Adaptive

39

SLEEK. BMW’s 640d is yet another immensely impressive diesel from the German giant. With a monumental 230kw/630nm this diesel is a pure beast.

Drive Control whose five modes change the 640d from a comfy cruiser to an edgy sprinter or sparing commuter. With optional dubs (20-inch rims), the rubber has ridiculously low profile, but somehow the computerised ride still manages spongy comfort next to rockhard handling. There’s plenty of power to get naughty, but the driver aids and grip levels were so sophisticated that I dared not push beyond what I already thought was impressive. What this car absolutely shines at is covering vast distances at high speeds, high comfort and low stress levels. On top of that, it’s got amazing frugality, hilarious power reserves and with the R9 600 massage seats option ticked, the ability to unsettle your passenger because it (and I quo-

te) “touched me inappropriately!” Back in daily traffic, “Eco Pro” mode and a standard stop/stop system can tone the car’s thirst down to the 5,4 L/100 km claimed by BMW. We averaged 8-9 L/100 km, which is quite remarkable considering the car’s weight and substantial fire power. Equally impressive is the claimed average CO2 output of just 143g/km. The 640d costs R889 000 ,but you should aim for a cool million to get the properly-spec’d, full Monty version. My impressions were mirrored by many passengers and a very excited hotel valet. The 640d isn’t overly ostentatious; it’s quietly attractive, highly sophisticated and an absolute dream to drive. - Galimoto

Chinese JMC comes to the Boland JMC (Jiangling Motor Corporation) entered the South African market with their unbeatable bakkies, double cabs and light trucks in 2010. JMC is now also represented in the Cape Town Metropolitan and Boland areas, when JMC Helderberg (Pty) Ltd recently opened their doors at 267 Main Road, Strand. JMC is the leading Chinese manufacturer of diesel bakkies, double cabs and light trucks of up to 3 tons load capacity. JMC vehicles are being distributed very successfully in more than 20 countries and approximately 300 dealerships. The sales in the RSA are growing by more than 50% per annum, sufficient proof of product acceptance and buyers’ satisfaction. The JMC products are no frill vehicles, virtually unbeatable in the price value chain. JMC carries all service and smash parts in its local warehouses. All vehicles come with a three year or 100 000 km warranty and services are due at 10 000 km intervals. JMC Helderberg offers oil services at less than R1 000. JMC Helderberg is managed and coowned by Klaus Linning, who in recent times led the team that transformed Fiat Helderberg into the leading Fiat and Alfa dealership in the Western Cape. If you are in the transport or leisure business and believe in value for money and unbeatable fuel economy, please contact Braam or Ben to test-drive the JMC vehicle of your choice. Among others, Ferrus is the author of the poem I’ve Come to Take You Home, written in honour of Sarah Baartman, affectionately known as Saartjie. “What an amazing woman Diana is,” says Jo Swart, chairperson of the Night Shel ter. “We were so grateful that she shared her own personal sto ry from her childhood with us, and told us how she’d come to the point of writing the poem.” The women also enjoyed refresh ments from Appletiser, magazines from JOY!, and gifts from Life Church. “It was a wonderful afternoon,” Swart says, “enjoyed by the shelter clients, staff and committee members.”

YAHOO! email users are warned to be on the lookout for hackers trying to take control of their personal email accounts. The hackers gain access to a person’s email account and send out scam emails to all their contacts. This was brought to DistrictMail’s attention last week when two separate emails were received within two days, claiming that the senders had been robbed of all their belongings and were stranded overseas in desperate need of financial assistance.

An extract from one of the emails reads as follows: “This is shameful, I need you to help me with a loan of 1 450 pounds to pay my hotel bills and get my self home. I will reimburse you soon as I get back Home. I will appreciate whatever you can assist me with. Let me know whatever amount you can help me with.” Somerset business LBA Productions fell victim to these hackers last week Wednesday. As a result, all their contacts built up over the past nine years have been lost. The email

address of Jason Adonis from LBA (jason_adonis1@yahoo.com) no longer exists; he is now using jasonadonis374@yahoo.com. Adonis says he reported the matter to the police, but a case could not be opened as he had not suffered any financial loss. DistrictMail has since been notified of numerous similar incidents with regards to Yahoo! email accounts. All efforts to reach Yahoo! administrators for comment have thus far been unsuccessful.

COLUMN: FISHING

Snoek shoals now more widespread At the weekend boatmen caught less snoek than during the week, and at different venues owing to the southeasterly wind that picked up on Thursday and Friday and dispersed the fish. Last week Strand professionals who fished in Table Bay were rewarded with a bonus catch of “slender tunny”, which often run along the West Coast to Table Bay with the snoek shoals when bait is abundant. Boatmen have many different names for these small tunny, including “small bluefin” and (incorrectly)

“big-eye tunny”, as well as “little tunny” and “mackerel tunny”. I was fortunate to see part of a catch of these tunny on Roach Wessels’ boat Kill. To see what they look like, have a look in Professor Smith’s book (The Sea Fishes of South Africa), at plate 65 on page 298. Just after the southeaster slacked off a bit on Saturday, quite a number of professionals were pleasantly surprised to find big shoals of yellowtail just inside Cape Point. Quite a number of katonkel were also boated there over the same period. The Western Province Deep Sea Angling Association held a very successful South League competition at

Struisbaai over the weekend. The event was hosted by Overberg Skiboat Club, and competitors weighed in snoek, red stump, red roman, hottentot and silver fish. Gus Rautman, skipper of Seacat, ran from Gansbaai almost all the way to Hermanus to find snoek; his crew landed eight fish. His daughter Karla (7), a novice, landed a 3,65 kg snoek, but her second fish was taken by a seal. The snoek that had been plentiful off Kleinbaai had moved to the Kleinmond side of Hermanus. Most of the fish caught in the competition were silver fish of just over 1 kg. A gurnard of over 3 kg was also boated. On Saturday Somerset West angler Louis Visagie and friends caught nine big snoek about 8 km southwest of the Steenbras River mouth before their pike bait was exhausted. The snoek were between 0,9 and 1,1 m long and weighed between 3,2 and 4,4 kg. Local shore anglers appear to be

crawling out of the woodwork after the recent inclement weather. A few of these anglers managed to land a few kob of 50 cm and slightly bigger from Blake’s Beach and Harmony Park. Betty’s Bay regulars are still catching galjoen and the odd kob at Dawidskraal and from Die Been area. Louis Visagie told me about his recent fishing trip to Linene, Mozambique, where they caught plenty of fish but suffered losses of almost R30 000 to theft. Louis said several valuable items were stolen while he towed his boat to Mozambique. The the happened while travelling at night on the 60 km dirt road to Pumene, which takes two hours and passes through several villages. Louis said that at night thieves jumped on the boat and took a tent, stretcher and a luggage bag estimated at R12 000. On their return, about 10 km from Pumene, they lost four reels and a fishing bag, estimated at R15 000. Louis said poverty is at the root of

Despite the theft he said the trip was wonderful, and the fishing extremely good, with quotas of bonito and king fish. He added that the visibility of sea is about 15 m and the water temperature 23 °C. To hear more about his trip call Louis on 082 882 8275.

SOCCER: DE BEERS VS BELLVILLE

Draw for De Beers DE BEERS hosted Bellville City at home this weekend and came away from the game with a 1–1 draw. The first team hit some decent form over the past four games, having drawn one and won two, but Bellville City are at the top of the league, and are fighting for promotion. About midway into the first half, Chris Beukes received a great ball from the left and scored. Bellville continued to attack, but De

Beers defended well and kept them at bay. The second half started evenly, but then a harsh decision against De Beers saw Bellville level matters with a penalty. Minutes later a De Beers’ players was sent off, but De Beers regrouped as Bellville turned up the pressure. However, a Wipco Man of the Match performance from captain Wayne Arlow kept the team together, and Bellville were unable to score again.

SINCE March 1957, the Hottentots Holland High School (HHH) drum majorettes have graced the streets of the Helderberg, but a shortage of funds could halt their march. This was brought to light when the reunion committee of the class of 1982 approached the school. It was decided the drummies would benefit as they were in desperate need of new boots since boots had not been replaced for 10 years.

Six local clubs might be promoted this season AFTER the disappointment of last season, when none of our local clubs won their leagues, fans are now on the verge of possibly seeing six clubs promoted. As predicted, our clubs will fare much better on the road while being as tough as nails at home. Let’s look at this week’s league-deciding fixtures: Helderberg vs Bellville (away) Helderberg will have to approach this game as a league-defining fixture. Bellville are competing with NNK for the second promotion spot in Super B, and this could make them very dangerous. Berge will want to go into their last two fixtures with less pressure, and they could achieve this by winning on Saturday. If Bellville were to gain promotion to Super A, it would definitely affirm the Northern Suburbs as a rugby stronghold. Referee: Matt Kemp Prediction: Helderberg to win a close game St Georges vs Scottsdene (Gustrouw) The Lulus are still unbeaten in the second round of matches, and are piling on the points. Scottsdene at home should have been pencilled in as a five-pointer, but winning is priority, es-

pecially as other promotion contenders Kraaifontein host UWC and Hamlets host Paarl. Referee: Nathan Swartz Prediction: St Georges to win with a bonus point Strand United vs Silvertree (Malta Park) United is the only club in the Helderberg to face possible relegation. Losing on Saturday would be a small disaster for the club. What complicates matters even more is that the other relegation candidates are playing against each other, which adds to the pressure of a win. Silvertree are always better at home, and are performing better than last season. Referee: Sinethemba Nrulwa Prediction: United to win by 5 Macassar vs Milnerton (Theo Marais Park) Macassar are assured of promotion but have very little chance of winning the league. Although they have been winning their matches, their performances have been topsyturvy and they’ll want a convincing display on Saturday. Milnerton do have a way of disrupting their opponents verbally, and Macassar should be wary of this. Referee: Christo van Heerden

Prediction: Macassar to win by 15 or less Raithby Universals vs Rocklands (Raithby) RU’s mathematical chance of promotion depends on too many other results going their way. Rocklands also fell away in the second round and have not travelled well at all. Raithby have performed much better under new coach Desmond Williams. Referee: Martin Tities Prediction: RU to win by 10 or more Strand vs Young Wesleys (Gustrouw, Friday night) Strand are playing great rugby this season and winning the big away games has set them up not only for promotion, but winning the league as well. Young Wesleys, on the opposite end of the log, should not be too much hassle for Strand, but playing under lights on a cool evening could count in their favour. Referee: Rodville Martin Prediction: Strand to win by 15 or more All Saints vs Atlantis (Helderzicht) All Saints’ season has come down to these 80 minutes, and they could not have asked for a tougher opponent than unbeaten Atlantis. Home ground advantage should count for something as this is the furthermost game

from home for Atlantis, and if All Saints get their passionate supporters there in numbers, it could just be a day All Saints will remember for a long time. Referee: Neels Erasmus Prediction: All Saints to win by 5 or less Strand Pioneers vs Peninsula (Abattoir) Pioneers are concentrating on building for the future and should start taking some sort of shape now as they are capable of beating the top teams in the league – they are the only ones to have beaten Masi with a bonus point. Peninsula have been bolstered by an influx of players from the Navy, but show no improvement. Referee: Cassiem Orrie. Prediction: Pioneers to win by 10 or more.

SIR Lowrians scored an emphatic 121–0 win against Lagunya at Sir Lowry Park. The 20-try win was a running rugby spectacular, and the Navy Train completely dominated Lagunya in all facets of play. The scoreline could have been even higher had Sir Lowrians used every opportunity. The backline was given ample space and had an excellent day, with centre Adrian Herman making many line breaks. Fullback Tervin Britz once again showed his class and outpaced the Lagunya backs to score three tries. Earl Rose could not be kept out the action, scoring a hat trick and setting up his backs to run at Lagunya. Lagunya simply had no answer. Hooker Thurston Meyer excelled as ball carrier, also scoring three tries. Lagunya, disappointingly, did not show much character. They also only sent two teams to the field, thereby giving the Sir Lowrians u.20 and third teams a win by forfeit. Sir Lowrians’ second team also gave a strong performance, winning their match 73–0. They’re close to clinching the league yet again. This weekend the Navy Train travels to Eersterivier, who have a strong home record. Sir Lowrians will replay the fixtures that had to be postponed due to unfit playing conditions on 24 September at Sir Lowry Park.

RUGBY: HELDERBERG VS BRACKENFELL

Helderberg smash Brackenfell

H

elderberg battered Brackenfell into a 57–24 defeat at the Charles Morkel Stadium in Strand on Saturday, and by doing so firmly secured their spot at the top of the log. Brackenfell opened the scoring with an early penalty goal (0–3). In the 12th minute flyhalf Charlton Cloete was on hand to pick up a ball from a tackle and pass to right wing Ashwill Peters on Brackenfell’s 10-metre line, set for the winger to accelerate to the try line. Cloete converted (7–3). Two minutes later Cloete added a penalty goal (10–3). In the 17th minute inside centre Elroy Tandy broke strongly and the ball travelled through several hands to reach lock Mynhardt le Roux, who passed to number 8 Carel du Preez, who goose-stepped his way through for a magnificent try. Cloete again slotted the kick (17–3). Brackenfell responded with an excellent try by their flyhalf, which was converted (17–10). Late in the half the home team attacked with gusto, first to the left, then to the right, finishing off with flyhalf Cloete sending fullback Gerhard du Plessis over for the final points before the break (22–10). After the change-over flanker Gary Williams was the main role player in another attacking surge, culminating in a superb try by right wing Ashwill Peters. Cloete again converted (29–10). The visitors then scored a try through solid work by their forwards, which they converted to bring the score to 29–17.

In the 14th minute replacement number 8 JP Crafford, having come onto the field a minute earlier, ran through untouched. Cloete converted (36–17). In the 22nd minute Carel du Preez and left wing Bradley Mentoor combined well before putting captain and outside centre Enrico Swartz in a gap to score. Scrumhalf Armien Bailey, now at flyhalf, converted with ease (43–17). Brackenfell added a converted try (43–24). In the 36th minute JP Crafford peeled from a line-out to dot down, and Bailey converted (50–24). Finally, replacement Breyten Isaacs used a quick cleanout from a ruck to feed Ashwill Peters, who completed his hat trick of tries. Bailey succeeded with the conversion (57–24). Helderberg have three games left to play with 66 log points. NNK are on 55 points, with two outstanding matches; Bellville are third with 53 points. Outsiders Primrose are fourth on the log with 44 points and four games to play. Other results: Helderberg II 75, Brackenfell 10; Helderberg III 86, Brackenfell 8; Helderberg u.20 A 55, Brackenfell 26; Helderberg u.20 B 7, DurbBell 31; and Helderbertg IV 10, Brackenfell 14. As may be seen from these results, this was certainly a happy day for Helderberg – all four teams smashed Brackenfell and in the process scored 43 tries against 9. At the Charles Morkel Stadium on Friday Helderberg’s u.20 B-team take on DurbBell C at 18:45, and Crusaders IV battle Villager at 20:00. On Saturday the first, second, third and u.20 A teams will hit the field against Bellville away.

Helderberg number 8 Carel du Preez, with ball in hand, breaks through Brackenfell’s defence on his way to score an excellent try for his team. Supporting him is Gary Williams. Helderberg won the match, played at the Morkel Stadium on Saturday, by 57–24. PHOTO: PETER BEE
