Think of your pet before you leave The summer holidays, considered an annual highlight for most people, have finally arrived. Throughout the year, people find themselves planning and saving for that big end-of-year holiday away with the family. But what about our four-legged family members who have to stay behind? What will happen to them when families spend weeks away from home? Each year the happiness and fun that accompany the holidays, are overshadowed by the horror stories of pets in distress, who were left to fend for themselves. In most cases, it’s usually the animal welfare organisations that fight for the rights of animals and are forced to come to their rescue. So before you embark on your well-deserved break, please ensure that your pets are taken care of. See our Pet’s Page (page 20) for advice.

Where was the support for our local Carols by Candlelight? People of Gordon’s Bay, you do not know what you missed on the night of Wednesday 28 November. In spite of the howling South Easter, the annual Carols by Candlelight was held at the Naval Base, preceded by the Sunset parade. I have been to the Carols for eight years and each time have been impressed by the amount of people attending, and also by the organisation of the event by the Lions club and the staff of the base. However, I was so disappointed to note that the numbers had dropped considerably this year. The tradition was discontinued for the last two years, but reintro-

duced again this year. It was advertised on posters around the village and also in your monthly magazine. Because of the inclement weather the event was relocated to the main hall, so the candles were able to keep burning. The enthusiasm of the cadets was amazing as they sang their hearts out, not only when it was their turn to sing to us as a choir, but also during the singing of the Carols themselves. The Navy Band travels all the way from Simon’s Town to accompany the carol singing and this year, as always, they were so professional. At the end of the concert, Father

Christmas arrived to give all the little ones a gift. He always seems to know when to come. A lot of time and trouble was taken to ensure that the evening was special for all who attended So please, to all the residents of our little village, make an effort to support our very own piece of the Navy next year. I know of a number of residents who attend the Carol concert at Vergelegen regardless of the weather, so perhaps they will consider joining us at our celebration next year? Let us make a new motto for “The Bay in the Mountains,” Local is Lekker!

A WINDY AFFAIR: Surfers and kite surf ers alike have taken advantage of the southeasterly winds experienced in the Helderberg these last few days to flock to Strand beach to prac tise their sport. The South African Weath er Bureau forecasts that the southeaster will blow until Tues day next week.

Sincerest condolences from Ward 84 to family of wind victim The tragic death of a nine-year-old at The Silver Oaks Lodge in Somerset West, after being struck by a falling tree, came as a shock to us all. On 30 November a tree fell over due to strong winds experienced in Cape Town during the course of last week. The tree, with its roots

on private property, fell outside of The City of Cape Town’s auspices. Even though The City of Cape Town have various measures in place, including pruning programmes for trees on public property, this sometimes is not sufficient to prevent injury and dam-

age against the forces of Mother Nature. I want to extend my sincerest condolences and offer my fullhearted support to the family members of the child involved.

Mag die Here julle seën.

Ek kon nie glo dat my kontant, dokumente en juwele so vinnig gevind is nie. My grootste verwagtinge is oortref. Brief verkort – Red. Zelda Menmuir
