matt mchugh & heather Davenport www.MattAndHeatherDC.com

Lindsay started LRRE because he believed a brokerage could do more for its agents and clients than what was being offered. He wanted his company to be different—to work more as a team not a group of individuals, to take pride in quality, and to be a part of the local community. These principles have helped shape the culture of LRRE as it has grown. Lindsay continues to play an active role in charting the course for the company and in doing so he’s fulfilling his initial goal of building a company that has a positive impact on people’s lives and engages his entrepreneurial spirit.

Years ago when Matt and Heather teamed up, they quickly realized that two is better than one.Two agents to focus on clients’ needs, two agents to negotiate for their clients and two agents who both know different aspects of the city. Matt and Heather have built a solid reputation among both buyers and sellers as excellent listeners and communicators who act as trusted advisors. They offer their clients a high level of professionalism as well as the extra time and attention for a smooth transaction process. As an established team, Matt and Heather are focused on their clients and attentive from beginning to end of the sales process.

his Georgetown Federal home has an unrivaled history. It was originally built in 1797 with brick imported from England by John Thomson Mason (nephew of George Mason). Named Quality Hill by its subsequent owner Dr. Charles Worthington, who served in the war of 1812, this home has passed through the hands of many influential Georgetown residents. Many refer to it as the Claiborne Pell house, named for the Rhode Island Senator who lived here from 1961 to 2004. This home has hosted numerous heads of state, including John F. Kennedy, who was photographed on the front steps.

Quality Hill has been extensively renovated and features over 10,000 square feet of living space with 8 bedrooms and 11 baths. Each room has a preserved sense of history with modern updates. Grand entertaining spaces with 14-foot ceilings in the living room and throughout the main floor. Mahogany built-ins in the elegant and inviting library were inspired by George Washington’s Mount Vernon. Spring in Scenic Shenandoah Charlottesville, VA Located approximately 100 miles from the District, Charlottesville has much to offer visitors, from historic highlights, to arts, and outdoor escapes. ome to Thomas Jefferson and two of the legacies he left behind, Monticello and the University of Virginia, both of which are on the World Heritage List, Charlottesville is teeming with historical locales that are great for the family. You will also find the homes of Presidents James Madison, Montpelier, and James Monroe, Ash Lawn-Highland. A definite historic must-see is Michie Tavern, established in 1784, which received travelers with food, drink and lodging over 200 years ago.The tavern gives visitors the opportunity to take part in a historical journey by recreating 18th-century tavern life, including rustic colonial midday fare.

The scenery in Charlottesville is unparalleled; whether you are an outdoor enthusiast because you love birdwatching and foliage, or prefer to take in the mountains over a glass of wine. Shenandoah

National Park & Skyline Drive have views that will leave you in awe of the natural beauty. Charlottesville has many spectacular wineries, vineyards and breweries that could keep you entertained for days. One in particular that we must suggest is Castle Hill Cider because of its unbeatable cider, architecture, and views all woven into one destination. In late April, Charlottesville historic sites take place in Historic Garden Week, celebrating the spring blooms. The Downtown Pedestrian mall is known for its impressive art galleries, including C’ville Arts, as well as live music that attracts large crowds. The Southern Cafe & Music Hall is certain to provide you with a night of entertainment and live music in an inviting, intimate setting. Once you’ve exhausted all of the entertainment options, head over to the Clifton Inn for a night of luxury at a reasonable price. Enjoy one of the many suite options for two, or a carriage house for the entire family. No matter which room you choose, it’s a room with a view; whether it be the mountainous landscape, the vast front lawn, or the property’s colorful gardens. In the morning, enjoy a complimentary Continental breakfast before heading on your way. The Clifton Inn. Photograph by Jen Fariello Photography.

Wade Davis’ Studio and Office by Travis Price Architects

project poetic Tholos to the Logos… A Scribe’s Kiva… Gaelic Nurse Tree…

his is the second studio I have done for Wade Davis in Washington, D.C. Here’s a man NBC once introduced, to his embarrassment, as “the real Indiana Jones.” Wade was being modest—because it is true, he is one of those gifted writers and explorers whom the muses love to inhabit. As Explorer in Residence for the National Geographic Society, how do you fit all of his immense world view into a small space. He not only travels the world, but travels it with an eye into culture and metaphor and sees the whole world as Joseph Campbell or Plato would. The Movement in this piece is the very subtle tension between heaven and earth. There’s a dark step that drops off, so you don’t even know that that’s a step until you take it. When you’re there you feel a pull between earth and sky. The movement is very subtle, as subtle as the plucking of a magical note, a whispered prayer. It tells you how, even for a very creative, complicated individual, if one explores, one can actually find the stillness, nature and a modernist dynamic, all in a 100-square-foot writing temple.

small but mighty spaces

Lori Graham Design + Home suggests ways to create efficient small spaces with impact Lori Graham is known for her chic design aesthetic and for creating elegant, enchanting spaces in large country homes as well as in close-in city dwellings. Whether the square footage of the home is large or small, there are always clever solutions to keep clutter at bay while also providing a room that’s comfortable and sophisticated. mong the many furnishings and accessories that make a well-designed space are vintage finds, cushy seating and dazzling chandeliers found at Lori Graham Home in Logan’s Circle, 1412 14th Street, NW, www.lorigraham.com, Graham’s home décor showroom and retail space. Mike Johnson, senior designer at Lori Graham Design and curator of Lori Graham Home’s Sixteen Fifty Nine by MRJ vintage collection, applies many small space tips in his own Shaw neighborhood condo. “Mike has a keen eye for composition,” Graham says, and “can make the most of any space—large or small.”

A

Among Lori Graham Design + Home’s top tips for creating chic, efficient and beautiful small spaces are: 1. B e reflective—Add plenty of lighting such as track lighting and pendants and install finishes that reflect light such as a glass tile backsplash. 2. C onsider what can be removed—In Johnson’s small condo, he removed closet doors to create a small wallpapered niche for his desk and replaced his bedroom door with a barn-style one to free up wall space.

6. B uy art you love—Art is one of the most important items you can purchase for a space, big or small. The art doesn’t need to be expensive, but it should speak to you. Art can be the basis for a room’s color scheme as well. 7. M ix textures—By using a variety of fabrics and finishes in a space, you can add depth and interest. 8. A dd built-ins—When possible, add shelving—built-in or freestanding—to keep clutter controlled. Shelving also provides extra places to display treasured items. 9. R emember rugs—Rugs can define a space, especially if the room is open. An ill-defined space can actually look cluttered so an area rug suggests distinctive uses within the setting. 10. H ang drapes high—Consider hanging drapes to the ceiling, even if the windows aren’t that tall. It leads the eye to the ceiling, creating the feeling of a larger space. 11. C ollect in clusters—Group collectibles together for a bigger impact, instead of scattering around a room. “Smaller rooms are great for stronger personalities and design preferences,” says Graham. “You can be bolder and louder in these small spaces. Some of the most pleasing spaces are an eclectic mix of styles. Don’t be afraid to combine modern and traditional pieces in the same room.” If you happen to be downsizing, Graham suggests paying attention to scale and don’t forget storage options, including built-ins and benches. Bar carts have been making a comeback, and in any style from vintage to modern, Graham says. They are wonderful conversation starters while adding function.

4. A dd multi-functional pieces—A glass top console behind a sofa separates one area of a wide-open room from another.

When considering where to splurge and where to save, Graham suggests splurging on the master bedroom, sofas, kitchen and master bath. “Always splurge on the spaces you spend a great deal of time in and the spaces that up the resale value of your home,” Graham adds.

5. S tay neutral—Keeping the bigger items neutral leaves room to add color in the pillows and other accessories, which can be changed for a whole new look periodically without spending much money. And dark colors are ok for small spaces—they can make a space cozy and inviting.

Photographs by Geoffrey Hodgdon

3. C reate distinct spaces—Consider painting or wallpapering an alcove to establish a foyer at the entryway.
