Katherine’s Korner

Welcome to the 2024-25 Rotary year! I'm excited about the year ahead Together, we can advance our mission and uphold the values that define us as Rotarians, showcasing our impact in communities worldwide.

This year, our focus is on 'adaptation ' Living in Stratford, where theater often involves adaptations, this concept resonates with me In Rotary's Action Plan, adaptation is crucial as we strive to remain relevant and impactful amidst new challenges and opportunities

So, what’s the difference between change and adaptation as we navigate our evolving service landscape? Change is constant, happening regardless of our wishes Adaptation, however, is our response to change the way we adjust, refine, and evolve not just to survive, but to thrive in new circumstances

During the pandemic, the world faced unprecedented change, disrupting social norms and routines. Our ability to adapt determined how successfully we navigated these times. By embracing new technologies and innovative approaches, we discovered more efficient ways to 'do Rotary '

Rotary has a rich history of adapting to meet global needs. From its beginnings as a fellowship, Rotary has transformed into a global humanitarian powerhouse. This evolution involved not just changing activities, but adapting our approach, tools, and vision

For over a century, we gathered in person, rang bells, and took attendance a model that served us well As the world changed, so did Rotary In 2016, our Council on Legislation recognized that “people have changed, the world has changed, and we need to change also ” This led to new meeting models like e-clubs, passport clubs, and impact clubs

So if people have the heart and the hands for service then there's a way for them to come into Rotary We must expand our reach and ensure our clubs mirror our communities If your Rotary Club looks like your community, you have a handle on the future. If not, there's a great opportunity to grow and invite more individuals to experience the Magic of Rotary.

Keep in touch! I’d love to hear your club’s story of adaptation.

DISTRICT STORIES

THE MAGIC OF ROTARY

This year’s theme, The Magic of Rotary, urges members to recognize and amplify the organization’s power to save lives Rotary International President-elect, Stephanie Urchick, emphasizes that the magic lies in our collective efforts, with every project completed, every dollar donated, and every new member recruited

At the Rotary International Assembly in Orlando, Florida, Urchick shared an inspiring story from her experience installing water filters in the Dominican Republic She recalled two boys watching as dirty water turned clean through a filter One boy excitedly asked her to "show the magic again," highlighting how such projects can transform lives

Stephanie also stressed the importance of balancing continuity and change, urging members to champion Rotary’s Action Plan and work towards peace. A presidential peace conference themed “Healing in a Divided World” is planned for 2025, building on Rotary’s long history of promoting peace through its global network of peace centers.

Additionally, she reiterated Rotary’s commitment to eradicating polio and encouraged members to push for support from elected officials and government leaders. Emphasizing diversity, equity, and inclusion, she called for embracing change to make Rotary more inclusive and relevant.
