Nanoscience @ Department of Physics Research & Facilities Durham GJ Russell Microscopy Facility (http://www.durham.ac.uk/ electron.microscopy) is a joint facility between five Faculty of Science departments (i.e. Physics, Chemistry, Earth Sciences, Engineering and Biology) based in the Department of Physics at Durham University. Staff are engaged in research with Durham University’s Faculty of Science as well as in collaboration with industry, and have a wealth of experience in dealing with many different characterisation requirements. The facility consists of several state-of-the-art electron microscopes (see below) for materials characterisation with extensive facilities for sample preparation. n Hitachi SU70 Scanning electron microscope (SEM) equipped with

energy and wave dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX and WDX respectively), cathodoluminescence and electron beam induced current (EBIC techniques) n JEOL 2100F Transmission electron microscope (TEM) equipped with EDX, electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS), energy filtered TEM (EFTEM) mapping and cryo-tomography

n FEI Helios Nanolab Focused ion-beam (FIB) microscope with EDX, gas

injection system, ‘slice and view’ and TEM sample preparation facilities

The Durham GJ Russell Microscopy Facility is particularly interested in forming collaborations in the fields of nanoscience and nanotechnology as well as novel materials for energy generation (photovoltaics, fuel cells etc.). Staff have expertise in extracting structural and chemical information across length scales ranging from the underlying microstructure of the material to crystal defects, such as interfaces, at the atomic scale.
