FIELD TRIPS TO DISCOVERY SCIENCE CENTER

Visit The Science Center Plan a field trip to Discovery Science Center this year. Our large scale exhibits, interactive programs, and science demonstrations by our trained science center staff all align with the California Science Content Standards. • Structured grade level field trip programs with grade-specific activity booklet and a science demonstration. • Plan to spend at least 2 hours for our basic field trip. • A FREE child admission ticket for every student attending the field trip to return to the Center, a $12.95 value. • Group pricing starting at only $9 per student. • Minimum group size is 15 students (2 free chaperones). • Admission fees are waived for required number of chaperones (1 to 8 ratio). • Additional adults are discounted to $11 each. • Reservations for the field trip must be made in advance. Water Education Workshop-style Classes and Field Trips (Grades 6 & 8) Sponsored by Irvine Ranch Water District This two-day program features a hands-on water chemistry lesson in school and a field trip to the San Joaquin Marsh in Irvine. Students use chemical test kits to determine aspects of water quality, conduct simulated biological surveys related to water quality issues, and explore current technologies. Taught by highly trained Science Center staff, this program utilizes a high-tech, student-response, keypad system to introduce students to resource conservation.

Resources Assembly and Field Trip (Grade 6) Sponsored by Orange County Waste and Recycling Having trouble teaching about resources? Let us do it for you! FREE 45-minute assemblies taught by the highly trained Science Center staff utilize a high-tech, studentresponse keypad system to introduce your 6th grade students to the CA Science Standards on resources. Topics include renewable and nonrenewable resources and a foundational understanding of the three “R’s” — Reduce, Reuse, Recycle! In addition, all students participating in this program will visit Discovery Science Center on a FREE field trip to explore the newest permanent exhibit, Eco Challenge, where the goal is to become the next Green Superhero! FREE materials for all students will be distributed, including informational activity booklets and household hazardous waste containers for home. In addition, classroom teachers will receive waste bins for their classroom. Bookings are very limited, so call 714.913.5030 soon.

Other topics within the California Science Content Standards taught during this program include (1) identifying dependent and controlled variables in an investigation, (2) knowing the natural origin of the materials used to make common objects, and (3) understanding the consequences of converting resources into useable forms. In addition, the students will become empowered and inspired to make a positive difference in their lives and on the environment. All students will receive a free recycled, reusable book bag and booklet. Bookings within the cities mentioned are very limited, so call soon. New: A portion of the 6th grade students in the Huntington Beach area will qualify to receive an added free field trip to the Science Center this year.
