PEOPLE OF STYLE Very recently you became a 51 percent shareholder in Hiref, one of the most valuable brands in Turkey. Hiref came out with the “Design Your Culture” slogan 13 years ago. How were you introduced to the brand?

Yakın zamanda Türkiye’nin en değerli markalarından biri Hiref’e %51 hisse ile ortak oldunuz. ‘Kültürünü tasarla’ sloganıyla 13 yıl önce yola çıkmış bir marka Hiref. Siz markayla ilk ne zaman ve nasıl tanışmıştınız?

We had known about Hiref for a long time. We also liked their designs. It is a unique brand. We even used to purchase their products a lot. Who would have guessed that one day you would become a shareholder in a company whose goods you used to purchase? Such is life I guess. What were the factors that motivated you to invest in the brand? As I said, it is a unique brand. Everybody knows how much we are interested in the arts. Its mission, stance and the value given to arts and culture all had a lot of impact on our decision. The basic mission of Hiref is to highlight the cultural and historical wealth of Anatolia and to present to the world our almost-forgotten handcrafts with a strong brand value and a contemporary design approach. In addition to bringing the world to Turkey, we wanted to top world brands with a Turkish brand. This was a factor too. What is unique about Hiref designs is the fact that there is a story behind every one. The story of each design is told in both English and Turkish using an elegantly designed story card included in the packaging. Hiref has appeared many times in global media, contributing to Turkey’s presentation and promotion. Hiref has three main operating fields. Retail, Corporate and Project-based operations, which are all important factors for us. How exactly do you achieve the division of responsibilities with your partners? Do you also take part in the design and production stages? Hiref already has a well-established corporate structure. As such, we do not get too involved in their businesses. They know their business well. However, we do hold brainstorming sessions in

Bu da.  Hiref, yurtdışı basının önde gelen mecralarında bir çok defa yer almış, Türkiye’nin temsil ve tanımına katkıda bulunmuştur. Hiref ‘in 3 ana faaliyet alanı vardır. Perakende, Kurumsal Çalışmalar ve Proje bazlı çalışmalar ki bizim için önemli bir faktör... Tam olarak nasıl bir iş bölümü var ortaklarınızla aranızda? Tasarım ve üretim aşamalarında da rol alıyor musunuz? Zaten kurumsal bir yapıya sahip Hiref... Çok fazla müdaheleci bir tutumumuz yok. Onlar işlerini çok iyi biliyorlar. Ama gerek tasarımda gerek üzeritimde ciddi beyin furtınaları oluyor aramızda. Her iki taraf da işini bilince inanın herşey çok daha kolay... Şansımıza bu şekilde bir ortaklık oldu.

What kind of path will Hiref follow moving forward? I believe you have a growth strategy through overseas expansion. Where do you plan to start this world tour? Yes, Hiref is planning to grow abroad, especially by focusing on the London, Dubai, Abu Dhabi and the U.S. Our advantage lies in the access rights we have to these markets. Our products are superior and elegant. Each one is a work of art. We shall tap into all possible channels using all means. Hopefully, our fortunes will grow.

After introducing several international brands to Turkish consumers over the years, this will be the first time you will open a Turkish brand to the international markets, at Demsa. To be honest, we believe that we are successful in introducing a brand to consumers. Domestic or overseas, it really does not matter much to the consumer. What is exciting here is to be able to do something for Turkey. I believe it is important for us at Hiref to promote Turkey, add to its value and boost its brand recognition. You will be bringing Galeries Lafayette to Turkey at the end of the year, I believe. Do you think Lafayette will go well with the Hiref brand? Sure, sure. Demsa will introduce Galeries Lafayette at sales outlets in Turkey. Also, in many project-based transactions, its special collection and designer accessories will be available in indoor/outdoor decorations of five-star hotel projects. Examples of this can be The St. Regis Istanbul, Hilton Taksim, Sheraton Cevahir, Four Seasons Hotel Istanbul At The Bosphorus, Swissôtel The Bosphorus, Radisson Blu, Wyndham Hotel, Jumeirah Zabeel Saray, and Shaza Hotels. This project will be highlighted. And of course Hiref wants to grow abroad, with a focus in London, Dubai, Abu Dhabi and U.S. especially.

CLASH OF PRINTS ON THE RUNWAYS From Versace to Valentino, runways saw a playful woman shining through with the clash of bold colors and prints

The runways are featuring a dance of colors and free expression of patterns this year. Each designer brings a distinct interpretation of this revolutionary change to the fashion world. The notions of art and fashion intermingle. The season’s prominent trend of printed patterns put on a glorious display on the runways, creating an air of being in an art gallery. We are embarking on an enlightening journey into the history of art, with bold and colorful flowers, parallel lines, geometrical patterns, tropical prints, and eclectic shapes. We are surrounded by patterns. So much so that even the nostalgic houndstooth becomes distinct this year, drawing attention with asymmetrically cut designs. Designers such as Marc Jacobs, Victoria Beckham, Stella McCartney and Wes Gordon each present unique interpretations. We are spellbound by a modernism in which parallel lines are colorful and sharp, all without

Meanwhile, exotic flowers captivate us with designs that revolutionize Gucci from within.

?irst timers visiting a hamam might be a bit nervous, but the process is relaxing and encoyable. Most hamams have separate areas for men and women, but the bathing rituals are similar for both. Npon arrival at the hamam, you can choose from the variety of services you wish to receive. Each person is provided with footwear, a towel to use after bathing, and another towel, known as a ‘peýtemal’, to cover up. It’s okay to wear a bathing suit, but most people will be nude underneath their ‘peýtemals’. The area came into the hands of the Ottomans in 1353, a full century before they conquered the land across the Bosphorus. Around the time of the 1453 Conquest of Istanbul the district was put under the jurisdiction of the local courts and aptly named Kadík’y, in English ÊVillage of the JudgeË. Kadík’y is also home to the Fenerbah…e Sports Club’s football stadium and on match days the streets are packed with excited fans in navy blue and yellow clothing. For the first time, the Jameel Prize an international award for contemporary art and design inspired by Islamic tradition - is being launched at a venue outside Great Britain. The Jameel Prize 4 exhibition, organised by the Victoria & Albert Museum, London in partnership with Art Jameel is opening on June 8 at the Pera Museum, Istanbul, which marks a future rotation between the V&A and guest venues from around the world. For the Jameel Prize 4, over 280 nominations were received from countries as far ranging as Afghanistan, Mali, Puerto Rico and Thailand. A panel of judges, chaired by V&A Director, Martin Roth, selected 11 shortlisted artists and designers, among whom CANAN and Cevdet Erek are two artists hailing from Turkey.

Tax Free system doubles the joy of shopping by providing VAT refunds included in the purchasing fee of goods. By completing a simple procedure, the VAT amount paid during shopping can be refunded from Tax Free Zone locations present at the airports and major customs gates. When shopping at member stores, if a Tax Free Zone sticker is displayed either on the shop window or in front of the cash register, a special Tax Free document is issued for the traveler.  Upon exiting the country, the traveler must show their purchased goods (within three months of purchase dates), Tax Free document, and passport to customs. VAT refund can be collected in cash from any Tax Free Zone or agency present at border gates.
