Welcome to your November issue...

It’s getting closer by the day, and I’m not talking about the ticklish thirty days ahead for us ladies, as some of our chaps let loose that moustache once more during “Movember”. No, I’m talking turkey, trees, tinsel and trimming-up, as the whole wonderful Christmas season gathers momentum once more. Whatever you are planning over the next few weeks and hopefully finding plenty of ideas in this issue to help you, make sure to book early for your special events.

With Bonfire Night upon us, early this month, please remember to look out for our pets but also to see how our neighbours are coping, not just with the fireworks, but with the cold, wintery days ahead. Good neighbourliness costs nothing but can mean so much to the elderly who may be struggling on their own.

Claire x

The countdown is underway to Christmas... a time of year that alongside the special celebrations also brings increased expense for families throughout the land.

The cost of everything seems to be rising at present and the seasonal presents for family and friends only adds to the financial burden.

However, in my household December is nothing... it’s November that’s the big spending month as it is littered with birthdays!

November brings my son and my birthday on the same day, my daughter’s – which was coincidentally on the same day as my late father’s – my granddaughter’s and father-in-law’s, not to mention a number of close friends.

This month will see celebrations for all the ages... from two years old to ninety!

I have often pondered why November is so full of family births and have come to the conclusion that there must be something in the Fen air each February...

HOW TO AVOID ANNOYING ‘POP-UPS’

Windows 11 comes with several built-in features that are enabled by default. Little old Microsoft wants you to think they are helpful, but unless you’re completely new to Windows, these features, that often ‘popup’ at the wrong moments, can be irritating, are rarely used and moreover, are an invasion of your privacy. It is therefore best to turn them off.

However, the big question is, which ones can you disable safely without breaking the system?

Tips, suggestions and annoying notifications

Windows loves to offer you tips on how to get the most out of your PC. If you would rather it didn’t, you can stop it by going to:

• Start > Settings > System > Notifications, then scroll down, and expand Additional settings Untick the three boxes for ‘tips and suggestions related to optimising your Windows experience.’

• Next, go to Settings > Personalisation > Start and switch off ‘Show recommendations for tips, shortcuts, new apps, and more.’

Diagnostic data

Windows 11 collects a lot of information about your computer to send to Microsoft to improve its services. This diagnostic data falls into two types: required and optional. Required data includes basic device details, settings, app compatibility, and configuration, all of which are required to keep the system functioning reliably. Optional data includes device health, usage, websites visited etc. Whilst Microsoft doesn’t allow you to stop sharing all diagnostic data, you can choose (and we highly recommend that you do) to stop sharing the optional data:

• Start > Settings >Privacy & Security (on the left sidebar) > Diagnostics & feedback Under ‘Windows permissions,’ expand the ‘Diagnostics data’ menu, and toggle off the ‘Send optional diagnostic data’ option. You can also prevent Microsoft from using diagnostic data to offer personalised tips, ads, and recommendations. Scroll down, click the ‘Tailored experiences’ menu, and turn the toggle off.

• To delete the diagnostic data Microsoft has already collected, click the ‘Delete diagnostic data’ card and press ‘Delete.’

Disable Targeted Ads.

Windows 11 collects user data to personalise the adverts you see. These targeted ads may appear in apps, the Microsoft Store, and other areas within the operating system. If you find ads popping up on your Windows 11 device annoying and distracting (and to limit the amount of personal information shared), you can disable targeted ads as follows:

• Start > Settings > Privacy & Security (on the left-hand side). Under ‘Windows permissions,’ expand the ‘Recommendations and offers’ section where you will find a setting labelled: ‘Let apps show me personalised ads by using my advertising ID.’ To disable targeted ads, toggle this option off.

Although, advertisements will still appear after disabling targeted ads, they will be less relevant to your interests, thus providing you with more privacy.

You can disable these settings after upgrading to Windows 11 or on a new laptop with Windows 11 already installed on it. Once you’ve done so, you’ll have improved privacy, fewer annoying notifications, and improved performance due to the reduction of background processes.

Don't miss Wisbech Christmas Fayre

Indulge in all things festive at Wisbech Christmas Fayre in the town centre which is free to enjoy on Sunday, December 14th.

The fayre includes eighty stalls offering quality gifts and delicious seasonal food, live music and dance, children’s attractions, an indoor craft fair and interactive family activities.

Meander from the Market Place to the High Street, The Crescent, library, museum and Horsefair Shopping Centre taking in the sights sound and smells of Christmas and meet Santa!

Be sure to visit Wisbech Library, in Ely Place, where you’ll find an indoor craft fayre, and Wisbech Museum, in Museum Square, for an historical Christmas food display and tasting along with a ‘Crafty Little Christmas’ exhibition.

Cllr Chris Seaton, of Fenland District Council, said: “We know our town Christmas events are rightly a highlight of the year and festive season for many and we look forward to seeing thousands of people filling our towns once again and enjoying all that’s on offer.”

Wisbech Christmas Fayre is a Fenland Four Seasons event supported by a committee of dedicated volunteers involving Fenland District Council, Wisbech Town Council, Wisbech Horsefair Shopping Centre, Wisbech Library, Wisbech and Fenland Museum, Wisbech Projects, Wisbech Lions, the National Trust’s Peckover House and Wisbech Rotary Club, with contributions from many more.

Fenland District Council provides some seed money to each of the Four Seasons events, an officer to support in the coordination and planning of them, support with bookings and administration and to ensure staffing for many aspects of the on-the-day running.

Walking, cycling or travelling by public transport to the event is encouraged for those who can.

To allow the event to happen, it’s usual for there to be no parking on or vehicle access to the following roads from 5am to 7pm: Bridge St, York Row, Post Office Lane, The Crescent, Ely Place, Castle Square, Castle Mews and Union Place, Hill St, Union St, Market Place, High St, Little Church St and Church Terrace. Vehicles parked on those roads between those times may be towed away at the owner’s expense.

Motorists are urged to use free council car parks in Chapel Road (PE13 1RG), Somers Road (PE13 1JF) and Church Terrace (PE13 1BL). Horsefair Shopping Centre car park, Churchill Road, will also be free for the day.

The event is making a welcome return after high winds led to cancellation last year.

A week before Wisbech Christmas Fayre, March Christmas Market will be held, taking place from 10am to 3pm on Sunday, December 7th.

BLHRT will be at the St Peter's Church March Christmas Tree Festival with a display tree called ʻRAIL200 THROUGH THE YEARSʼ from 12 noon to 8pm on Friday, 12th and from 9.30am to 5pm on Saturday, 13th December.

Come along, enjoy the beautifully decorated trees, and don’t forget to vote for your favourite – we hope it’s ours! Let’s celebrate the season and 200 years of railway history together!

Come and talk to us on our plans for the BLHRT leading up to the 2027 180th anniversary of the March to Wisbech Branch Line opening.

We will have items of merchandise there, including clothing, mugs, jam, fridge magnets and place name totems.

There will also be some special membership packs available, of which the adult member version will contain 1 x Adult Yearly Membership, 1 x BLHRT Mug, 1 x BLHRT Jam, 1 x BLHRT Unlined Beanie Hat, 1 x Bramley Fridge Magnet, 1 x Bramley Totem and a BLHRT Xmas card to welcome the new member. BLHRT are reaching out to the local communities to find people who would like to join and become members to initially help clear the vegetation, so we can assess what is needed to have the track at the correct standard to run on. We also need fences and gates erected and platelayers’ huts rebuilt.

When we receive the correct permissions from NR we will then be able to start looking at what is required to rebuild the signal box and Station House at Coldham and the signal box at Waldersea, and work out the costings of those projects.

In 2027, it will be 180 years since the March to Wisbech Branch Line was opened in May 1847 and we would like to try and have the Coldham to Waldersea section open as a heritage railway by then. We have been in talks with the CPCA and Network Rail and will continue to be in contact with them as to how this fits into their vision of the line’s use in the future to connect Wisbech and local area back to the main line at March. Thanks for reading this article; we look forward to hearing from you or seeing you on 1st and 3rd Saturdays of the month, with other possible workdays if there are enough members to run the day.

Thank you, Chair BLHRT

What If...? Scott

With the Budget at the end of the month, there is always a period of speculation beforehand and then a period of speculation afterwards, both in terms of what will be included and then how will this affect everyone, and this year’s Budget will be no different.

This therefore leads onto many different conversions both internally with colleagues and peers, but also with clients. With the basic question being “What if...?”.

Sometimes this question is very easy to answer, with announcements having been made some years before a change comes into effect, although perhaps the detail is lacking when it is first announced. There are of course changes that happen immediately, or are discussed for many weeks within the media. Whether this is unbiased discussion or not is open to question.

As an example, what if National Insurance were to be increased for employers? Well the effect has been higher employee costs, which have been either passed onto the consumer or suffered by the employer.

Recently the media has been suggesting that National Insurance could be applied to rental income, however is this the income or is this the profit? What would the effect of this be? A

reduction in the number of landlords, more sales of property, a reduction in the value of property, the list could be endless.

However, where there is an action there is a consequence for tax purposes, and it is important that the correct advice is taken at the appropriate time, and from the appropriately qualified individuals.

This is certainly an important aspect of providing advice, and an example of this has been recently seen. HMRC are taking steps to ensure that tax advice is being provided by suitably qualified individuals, and here at Whitings LLP we have many with years of experience and qualifications to be able to provide the advice.

Let’s see what the Budget brings, following which we shall be making our own observations.

here’s no need for people to suffer in silence if they feel they have hearing problems. That’s the message from Clearer Hearing Ltd which says people should treat their hearing just as they do their eye-sight.

“People shouldn’t be afraid to come in and have their ears checked; they shouldn’t sit at home in silence. We are here to give advice and have many regular customers at our Wisbech clinic, many of whom have been with us for years with some coming from as far afield as north Norfolk.”

Jackie Mantle, manager of the company’s Wisbech and St Ives branches, said: “Most people have their eyes tested every year and they should treat their hearing the same.”

FENLAND FAMILY HISTORY SOCIETY

History has shaped how we are as individuals. My family came to England in 1885 from one of the many Scottish Islands. I find it fascinating how our national flag was created. There is a story about how it has been flown.

It was in 1606 that Scotland joined England and a new flag was designed showing the two different crosses together on one flag. Ireland joined about two hundred years later. In 1801 the flag of Ireland needed to be added, but it could hide the white cross of Scotland. A design was made to show the white cross of Scotland as a wider white diagonal cross against the blue background. As Scotland joined first, the broader white diagonal cross is flown on the hoist or pole side of the flag. Ireland’s white background is shown on the fly side of the flag. Many years ago, a ship was raided by pirates. The cabin boy flew the Union Jack upside down. A passing ship saw it and knew it meant they needed help as they were in distress and so went to save them. I notice many of the national flags in Wisbech are flying upside down; maybe they are in distress. Should we offer our help?

RESEARCHERS

Our team enjoyed our first research session at the Red Lion pub on North Brink, Wisbech. We had varied requests. One gentleman wished for help to research his family, which our researcher was very willing to show him. Another learnt many things about her naughty grandfather who had appeared in court for assault. Another was helped to search for her unknown father. We will be back again offering our free help; the next one will be on November 19th at 6.30pm -8pm.

RESEARCH SESSIONS

Our researchers can be found at three different places at different times of the day. As mentioned

above, our newest research session is on the third Wednesday of every other month in the restaurant of The Red Lion. Others are on the first Tuesday of every month in Wisbech library at 10am-12noon and at Baytree Garden Centre in Hilgay on the second Monday of every month at 11am-2.30pm. We can help you no matter where your family originate. Why not come and meet us?

MONTHLY MEETINGS

Monthly meetings are held on the fourth Thursday each month in the evening at Wisbech Library from 7pm-9pm, except August and December. November 20th will be our end of year buffet and will feature a 'sharing family history & research' session. Visitors are always welcome to join us at our meetings for a donation of at least £2 to help with the hire of the room.

EVENTS TEAM

The events team arranges displays to match the theme of the event being held. We research and display some interesting facts about the theme of the event. We will be at St Augustine’s Church from December 5th to help celebrate Christmas and the wonderful trees. If you would like us to attend an event for you, please contact us.

SPEAKERS

Our speakers are available to attend groups and clubs to give talks in the local area. Our talks are very amusing as well as informative. They include: ‘We're going down the pub - a talk on local' history’; ‘History of Elgoods’; ‘Wisbech heritage’; ‘The Littleport Riots’; ‘The Fun of Family History’; ‘My Naughty Great Aunt Eliza’; ‘The Ups & Downs of Being a Magistrate’; and ‘The Sad Tale of The Blacksmith's Family’.

For further information on any of the above please phone me on (01945) 587723. Email: bridget25hunter@btinternet.com

Craftspeople from the Fens are invited to make and donate a fabulous tree decoration for Wisbech and Fenland Museum’s latest fundraiser A Crafty Little Christmas.

The museum is keen to promote the variety and excellence of handmade work produced in the Fens and help to secure its own future at the same time.

Only decorations that can be hung on a Christmas tree will be sold for a fixed price of £7 at Wisbech and Fenland Museum’s Crafty Little Christmas exhibition from December 6th to December 20th. All proceeds will go toward supporting the museum to stay open.

Submissions can be sent or delivered to the museum reception desk which is open from 10am to 4pm,

Wednesday to Saturday from now until Saturday, November 19th. For further information email info@ wisbechmuseum.co.uk

Meanwhile, black and white photos taken by the Vicar of Guyhirn’s daughter that tell the story of the Fenland village community up to the mid-twentieth century are on display at the museum until November 9th.

Miss Margaret George, or Maggie George as she was fondly known, was nineteen when her father moved to Guyhirn as vicar just as the First World War was ending and the exhibition reveals every detail of community life in Guyhirn over thirty years from 1918 to 1948.

She had honed her skill as a photographer on the Kodak Box Brownie she was given as a child and left thirty albums with captions and ten thousand negatives recording every baptism, wedding, fete, seaside outing, farm activity and funeral.
