Discovering the Deepings issue 126, December 2025

Welcome to your December issue...

Avery warm welcome to this, our last issue of 2025. As a new year draws closer, it’s time to look back and reflect on this year, in which so much has happened locally and further afield. For some of us, some loved ones are no longer around, but for many, new arrivals and relationships have made the future look brighter than ever.

Huge thanks go to everyone who has helped us at Discovering Magazines in any way this year. This refers to our advertisers and contributors, (with their regular features, wonderful advice, and suggestions) and, of course, our dedicated sales and editorial colleagues who this year have shown such amazing support for each other. But it is you, our readers, who make everything worthwhile for us, so many thanks to you all. Best wishes for Christmas and for 2026 – good luck, but most importantly, good health!

Claire x

Quote of the year must go to the golfer who recently shot a 13-over-par round and explained, “I thought I hit a lot of great shots out there. I hit a lot of good shots … just to the wrong spots.” These are the words of Kai Trump, the granddaughter of a certain US President! Congratulations to England’s Men on reaching the 2026 FIFA World Cup and the England Men’s Rugby going unbeaten in ten games. Now, we hold our breath over the next seven weeks, as our cricketers aim to make it a hat-trick by bringing home The Ashes! And finally:

• When I complained that the barista had served me the wrong coffee, twenty minutes late, he just smirked, “Better latte than never!”

• Next year’s Fibonacci Convention is going to be really special - it’s as big as the last two put together. Enjoy the read … and a fun-filled Christmas too!

Merry Christmas from W & P Legal... and a thought for the Turkey Coma

As the festive season rolls around once again, all of us at W & P Legal want to wish you and your loved ones a very Merry Christmas and a happy, healthy New Year.

We hope your holidays are filled with laughter, good company, and copious amounts of mince pies. It’s that wonderful time of year when the pace of life slows down a little, the to-do lists go on pause, and even the most determined workaholic finds themself horizontal in front of the King’s Speech with a tin of chocolates in hand.

But while you’re enjoying that well-earned rest, here’s a gentle suggestion (and we promise it’s a friendly one!). The Christmas and New Year break can actually be the perfect time to have those important family conversations that so often get postponed, like sorting out your will, setting up a Power of Attorney, or making sure your estate planning reflects your current wishes.

Between the leftovers, the board games, and the mild chaos of visiting relatives, it’s often the time for when the whole family is together and that’s exactly when it’s easiest to talk about the future, openly and positively. After all, it’s not a gloomy topic when it’s about giving everyone peace of mind and clarity. Think of it as tying a bow on your affairs as neatly as the one on that suspiciously re-wrapped gift from last year!

So, while we certainly don’t recommend opening your will after the crackers have been pulled, a quiet chat over a glass of something festive might just be one of the most thoughtful things you do this Christmas.

From all of us at W & P Legal, thank you for your continued trust and support throughout the year.

We wish you a restful break, a joyful start to 2026, and, most importantly, no arguments over Monopoly... It’s only a game!

Merry Christmas and a very Happy New Year!

Match the correct festive novelties with those placed in participating shop windows and win £50 cash!

A Christmas Message

It’s the most wonderful time of the year here in Market Deeping! As the town sparkles with festive lights, we at Path Mortgages want to share a little Christmas cheer and a few seasonal tips for those dreaming of a new home in the year ahead.

For some, that means thinking about more space, a fresh start, or finally making that dream move a reality. Amid the festivities, it’s also the perfect time to plan for 2026. So, as our gift to you, here are a few ways to prepare for your next home journey while still enjoying the Christmas season.

Plan ahead, but don’t panic

December can feel like a whirlwind, but it’s a great time to prepare. While many wait for January, you can get ahead by reviewing your finances now, maybe set aside part of your holiday budget for a deposit or moving costs. Not sure where to start? We’re here to help, with free consultations

available even during the festive rush.

Get ready for January

The property market comes alive in the new year, so being prepared gives you an edge. Our team can help you review your budget, check your credit score, and gather the paperwork you’ll need, so you’re ready to jump into house-hunting or remortgaging as soon as January begins.

Balance festive spending with future goals

It’s easy to get carried away at Christmas, but if a new home is on your 2026 wish list, try to avoid overusing credit or taking on new debt. Managing your finances wisely now will strengthen your mortgage options later.

Enjoy the home you have

While planning ahead, don’t forget to enjoy the present. Decorate, celebrate, and take in the twinkling lights of Market Deeping. A happy home today sets the stage for exciting new beginnings tomorrow.

From all of us at Path Mortgages, we wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

LANDSCAPING

The Winter Of 1947

Snow started to fall in the last week of January and continued through February into early March, together with strong winds which caused it to drift. A bus party from Deeping, returning from the cinema in Peterborough, had to spend all night in a snowdrift at Marholm when their vehicle became trapped. There were severe frosts, and the River Welland froze, but suddenly on March 10th, warmer air started a rapid thaw, followed by rain, and conditions just got worse.

Within a few days, melting snow and ice made the river overflow its banks. Soon, water was swirling round The Cross in Deeping St James into Broadgate Lane, and Horsegate was under water. A resident recalled watching people’s furniture floating past and boats delivering food to those who had to retreat to upper rooms. In Market Deeping, the High Street was flooded, and a Boston couple had to abandon their car in deep water. The next morning, they tried to retrieve it by boat but were prevented by floating blocks of ice.

Farmers in the fen anxiously monitored Deeping High Bank which protected their land from torrents of water in the Welland. It seemed inevitable that the bank would be breached and disaster happened on March 21st, when it gave way on the Crowland side.

The danger bell was rung at Crowland Abbey for the first time since floods in 1880, and frantic efforts were made to repair the bank. Volunteers were helped by a large contingent of German prisoners, and Buffalo amphibious tanks were put into the breach. Food was still under wartime rationing, and crops ruined by flooding were a great loss.

German prisoners of war were also brought by lorry to Deeping St James, to reinforce the earth bank behind houses on the riverside in Eastgate. The local name for a mooring was “hive” and the protective barrier was known as Hive Bank. Over time, some residents had allowed the bank to become overgrown and weakened by roots of trees growing on it.

Although the collapse of High Bank allowed water to flow away from the Deepings, it caused havoc around Crowland, and downstream, at Spalding, where men with long poles had to guide floating ice under the bridges to reduce flooding there. It was decided that a river improvement scheme from The Wash to Stamford was essential to prevent a recurrence.

As part of the scheme, a flood relief channel was excavated from Tallington to re-join the River Welland near Peakirk. Known as Maxey Cut, it was completed in 1954 and protects the Deepings and nearby villages by taking excess water from the river after heavy rainfall. This improved drainage also allowed houses to be built in lower Eastgate, where only a few cottages had stood before.

‘Tis the Season to be... Vigilant – Beware of Christmas Shopping Scams!

With the excitement of festive shopping comes a warning, as TSB has reported an 11%, year-on-year, increase in purchase fraud cases between January and September 2025. Consumers are advised to remain vigilant as purchase fraud incidents rise during the seasonal shopping period.

Many purchase scams originate on social media platforms, where fraudsters advertise counterfeit listings for sought-after or limited-availability products, such as concert and football tickets, trainers, children’s toys, home repairs, gaming consoles and other technology. Platforms such as Facebook Marketplace are particularly notable for attracting both buyers and sellers.

How to help make this time merry and not miserable:

• Choose your payment method wisely. Paying by credit card can give you protection under Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act if something goes wrong with the purchase, meaning the credit card company can potentially be held liable if there is a problem. Section 75 may apply if the goods or services cost more than £100 and up to £30,000.

• Avoid rushed transactions, and meet sellers in person if possible. Use debit or credit cards, not a bank transfer.

• Good reviews don’t guarantee legitimacy, so always prioritise secure payment methods. Scammers often target hot or rare items at seemingly unbeatable prices. Do your research and check seller reviews and profiles carefully.

• It's better to spend a little more with a trusted seller than risk your money. If considering an unfamiliar site, check Trustpilot for consumer reviews.

• Try to stick to trusted websites and platforms with secure payment options.

Reporting a scam on Facebook Marketplace

• Report the listing. Find the Marketplace listing you want to report and follow the onscreen instruction.

• Report the user. Go to the Facebook profile of the user you want to report. Click on the “…” or ‘More Options’ link, usually under their cover photo. Select “Find support or report” and follow the on-screen instructions.

• Record all conversations. Before reporting a user or scam, make sure to save or screenshot any suspicious conversations or transactions.

• Submit feedback to Facebook. If you experience a scam or see a potential loophole that might be exploited by fraudsters, it’s always a good idea to provide feedback to Facebook.

• Check out Facebook’s official guidelines for staying safe while using Facebook Marketplace, so you can avoid scams.

Wishing you a safe and peaceful Christmas.

We hope you have a relaxing Christmas, filled with happiness and treasured memories.

Looking back at this year, we would like to say a huge thank you to all our valued clients for your trust and support. It is because of your loyalty and continued instructions that we are able to survive as a small general practice, providing our local community and surrounding areas with valuable, all-round legal services.

On behalf of the entire team at Double and Megson, we wish our clients and the rest of the local community a Merry Christmas and best wishes for good health, peace and happiness for the New Year.

Deeping United Under-11 Reds Crowned “The Junior Premier League Midlands Champions”

After a very successful season last year, Deeping United Under-11 Reds wanted bigger challenges for the 2025/26 season, and we set our eyes on competing in The Junior Premier League which would mean tougher challenges from clubs further afield.

We started our journey competing against an array of teams from across the Midlands with the results going towards qualifying for either the Trophy or the Cup competition within the Midlands (Cup competition being the higher category). Deeping United qualified for the Cup competition and went unbeaten in doing so.

Deeping United was then put in a qualifying group of six teams, and they faced opponents from academies, regional talent centres and

early training centres (ETCs) such as Aston Villa and Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Deeping Cubs Take to the Air

Sixteen Deeping Apache Cubs paid a visit to Peel House in Whittlesey with their leaders recently to learn more about Radio Fenland. All the cubs accepted the challenge of speaking live on air as well as meeting the Mayor of Whittlesey, Councillor Alex Miscandlon who invited the youngsters, who were aged eight to ten, to the Town Council Chamber for an insight into what it’s like to be a mayor and representative of a town. To listen to Radio Fenland, simply download the Free App Radio Fenland to your phone or tablet. Any other community groups wishing to learn about Radio Fenland can email studio@radiofenland.com

The competition was a mix of home and away matches and we won all these games to top the Midlands Cup group and be crowned “The Junior Premier League Midlands Champions.” Deeping United Under-11 Reds are now the sole team to represent the Midlands in The National Finals to be played at St. George’s Park in Staffordshire.

Coach Cliff Barrett, commented, “I couldn’t be prouder of this group of players; they have excelled and worked tirelessly to achieve what they have. Regardless of the results to come, this experience will last a lifetime. To think they have also been competing in the Peterborough Junior Alliance League on Sundays is pretty staggering.”

Have you been refused a mortgage or equity release due to spray foam?

If you suspect you’ve been misled or had a poor-quality removal, act now! Contact us for a FREE survey and expert advice before it’s too late.

The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) states that spray foam may affect a property's valuation, particularly if applied incorrectly. Spray foam can reduce airflow in the roof, potentially leading to issues like mould, wood rot, and reduced structural stability.

❌ Foam left behind in eaves – Often hidden and hard to reach without proper access (scaffolding may have been necessary).

❌ Torn or damaged roofing felt – Careless removal can cause holes, leading to leaks and structural issues.

❌ Foil tacked to rafters – A common trick used to hide incomplete removal, preventing proper inspection.
