Welcome to your November issue...

It’s getting closer by the day, and I’m not talking about the ticklish thirty days ahead for us ladies, as some of our chaps let loose that moustache once more during “Movember”. No, I’m talking turkey, trees, tinsel and trimming-up, as the whole wonderful Christmas season gathers momentum once more. Whatever you are planning over the next few weeks and hopefully finding plenty of ideas in this issue to help you, make sure to book early for your special events.

With Bonfire Night upon us, early this month, please remember to look out for our pets but also to see how our neighbours are coping, not just with the fireworks, but with the cold, wintery days ahead. Good neighbourliness costs nothing but can mean so much to the elderly who may be struggling on their own. Claire x

I see the Royal British Legion has this year put out the “Tommy 10,000 Steps Challenge.” The aim is for you to walk 10,000 steps a day throughout the month, raising money to provide vital housing, employment, and care for those who served our country. The daily exercise will, of course improve your fitness and mental wellbeing. Full details at https://rbli.co.uk/rbli-events/tommy-10000-steps-challenge.

If cycling is more your thing, then how about challenging a certain Mr Neil Campbell? On October 5th in Arkansas, the British daredevil smashed his own world record for the fastest bicycle speed in a slipstream, reaching 175.89 mph behind a pickup truck. Just watching the video footage left me breathless!

And finally:

✦ I struggled with the instructions on how to fly my new drone –it went straight over my head!

✦ I couldn’t understand why my doctor said my posture was bad... but I had a hunch

Enjoy the read … and for all you moustache cultivators, have a magnificent “Mo-vember”!

Langtoft Primary School's Reading Partnership

We’re delighted to have set up a new partnership with a school in Ukraine, offering our students the opportunity to connect with their Ukrainian peers on a project that celebrates the joy of reading.

Through the British Council’s UK-Ukraine School Partnerships programme, funded by the UK Government, we’ve teamed up with Kharkiv Lyceum No.152 to collaborate on a ‘Reading for Pleasure’ initiative. Together, we’ll explore how reading can broaden horizons, build confidence, and support mental wellbeing – fostering meaningful connections through the shared power of stories.

Ms Bytheway visited Poland to meet with her partner teacher, Yana. Together they planned a series of engaging online sessions, which will begin with our Year 3 children, who have already written letters to the children in Ukraine.

Harvest Assembly on October 2nd.

Once again, we were delighted to collect items for our local Foodbank (165kg worth!) which does a tremendous job supporting many families in need in our community with food parcels, household items and much more.

Open Days:

We are holding our Open Days for those children starting school in September 2026, on November 4th at 9:15am and November 11th at 1:30pm and again at 4pm. No booking required. We look forward to welcoming you.

Sports Ambassadors Appointed

As part of their role, the children have been busy creating playtime activities for Key Stage1 and Lower Key Stage 2 to try to get as many children engaged in sport as possible. They have had over forty children during each session, engaged and enjoying physical activity - a huge achievement that will continue throughout the year. Our ambassadors have also been spending playtime with Foundation

On Friday September 26th, our Year 6 children held a Macmillan Coffee Morning which raised an impressive £485! Their success is a true reflection of their outstanding organisation, respectful attitude, brilliant teamwork, tireless hard work—and of course, their amazing baking skills! Year 2 Fire and Rescue Workshop

In early October, Year 2 children had a visit from Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue to teach them all about fire safety. The children played a game to identify different objects that are good to play with and objects that are not and we learnt how to keep ourselves safe at home.

Have you considered helping your local secondary school?

The Deepings School is looking for members to join our community council, and help continue to embed its values of Kindness, Ambition and Respect.

The school has just received a much improved Ofsted report, which highlighted an ‘inclusive culture based on mutual respect’; ‘pupils who are actively engaged in community and charity projects’, and ‘a school which prepares pupils well for their lives in modern Britain.’ The regular Collaborative Review Day sessions - where other external teaching professionals and trustees come into the school and review lessons across different age groups - are also already bearing fruit.

We’ve also recently enjoyed excellent GCSE and A-Level results, with our sixth formers leaving us to study medicine, engineering, social work and many more subjects. So the school is happier and healthier than it has been in a long time, and you can be a part of that journey by joining the new governing body, known as the Anthem Community Council (ACC). We want people of all ages, experience, skills and abilities to join the

team, which meets four times a year - although you can put in as much time as you want.

Full training is provided for these voluntary roles, which are operational - we won’t be getting involved in telling teachers how to teach or set up their classrooms. Each ACC member will take on championing roles in key areas such as community, safeguarding, SEND and inclusion, and sustainability and climate change.

In the last four months we’ve brought in members with fantastic experience in teaching, health, business and communications, but really we’re looking for people who just care about the 1100 pupils and the staff who teach them.

Can you help us help the school? Do you have a keen eye for detail? Maybe you have a passion for the environment, or business, or sport and leisure? Perhaps you have an idea for how a school can work with the local community, or maybe you’d just like to find out more about how a school works.

And over the next couple of years we will aim to hold new events, internally and externally, including Christmas and ‘open evenings’, while also becoming more involved in existing events. And we’ll shout a bit more about the positive achievements of the school. It isn’t going to happen overnight, but if you’re like to be a part of it please let me know - email me at chair@deepings.anthemtrust.uk

Twenty Years of Delivering Peace of Mind

Last month marked a very special milestone for W&P Legal – twenty years since we first opened our doors on October 5th, 2005. Back then it was just me and we were known as “Will and Probate Services”.

Over those two decades, we’ve had the privilege of helping almost 15,000 people plan for the future with confidence - from writing wills and setting up trusts to preparing Lasting Powers of Attorney and guiding families through probate. It’s been an incredible journey, and we want to take this opportunity to say a heartfelt thank you to everyone who has placed their trust in us.

At the heart of W&P Legal has always been a simple promise: to give our clients peace of mind. Whether it’s ensuring loved ones are protected, helping to avoid unnecessary costs and complications, or simply making sense of what can feel like a maze of legal jargon, our focus has never changed - clear advice, friendly service, and real understanding.

Of course, much has changed since 2005. Families are more dispersed, care planning has become a growing concern, and technology has transformed how we connect and share information. Through it all, we’ve adapted and evolved - combining modern tools with traditional values to make estate planning simpler, clearer, and more accessible than ever.

As we look to the future, our commitment remains the same: to continue delivering peace of mind to families across the country. Whether you’re dealing with bereavement, reviewing your will, setting up a Power of Attorney, or thinking ahead about how best to protect your estate, we’re here to help - just as we have been for the past twenty years.

To everyone who has been part of our story so far - our clients, staff, and professional partners - thank you for your trust and support. We look forward to the next chapter and to helping even more people plan with confidence and peace of mind.

“Different Journeys, Same Confidence”

Rebuild what time or weight loss took away… naturally.

Your journey to feeling confident in your body is something to be proud of, whether it’s through weight loss, lifestyle changes, or simply embracing a new chapter of life. But sometimes, those transformations can leave the face looking a little different - a loss of volume, softer contours, or skin that no longer reflects how vibrant you feel inside.

That’s where AesPlla can help.

As we age, our skin gradually loses collagen, the natural framework that keeps it firm, smooth, and defined. Weight loss, while beneficial for health and confidence, can accelerate this process, leading to a hollow or deflated appearance. AesPlla is a collagen-stimulating injectable designed to work with your skin, helping it rebuild strength and structure from within.

TREATMENTS WE OFFER

Dermal fillers ✦ Lip fillers ✦ Bunny lines

Downturned corners of the mouth ✦ Gummy smiles

Profhilo (turkey neck) ✦ Hay fever injections

Fat dissolving ✦ Vitamin B12 injections

Anti-wrinkle treatments ✦ Hand rejuvenation

Smokers' lines ✦ Profhilo (five-point face lift)

Vitamin D injections ✦ Under eye treatments

Brow lift ✦ Cheek filler ✦ Excessive sweating ✦ Masseter Botox (teeth grinding) ✦

Unlike traditional fillers that simply add volume, AesPlla gradually encourages your body to restore its own collagen, achieving results that look refreshed,

balanced, and beautifully natural over time. Whether you’ve lost facial fullness following weight loss or are simply noticing changes from the natural ageing process, AesPlla offers a subtle, long-lasting solution that enhances your natural features without altering your individuality. It’s about celebrating your journey. With AesPlla, you can enjoy the confidence that comes from looking like yourself, just naturally revitalised.

At Deep-in Aesthetics, our approach is centred on natural-looking results and personalised care. Every AesPlla treatment plan is tailored to your needs.

Have you been refused a mortgage or equity release due to spray foam?

If you suspect you’ve been misled or had a poor-quality removal, act now! Contact us for a FREE survey and expert advice before it’s too late.

The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) states that spray foam may affect a property's valuation, particularly if applied incorrectly. Spray foam can reduce airflow in the roof, potentially leading to issues like mould, wood rot, and reduced structural stability.

❌ Foam left behind in eaves – Often hidden and hard to reach without proper access (scaffolding may have been necessary).

❌ Torn or damaged roofing felt – Careless removal can cause holes, leading to leaks and structural issues.

❌ Foil tacked to rafters – A common trick used to hide incomplete removal, preventing proper inspection.

Warmer Homes, Stronger Finances: The Mortgage Benefits

of Going Green

How improving insulation and heating can help your bills and mortgage borrowing.

With energy bills still high, the efficiency of your home can make a real difference to your monthly budget – and even to your mortgage options. Poor insulation or an old boiler can add hundreds of pounds to annual costs. By upgrading, homeowners can cut bills, free up disposable income, and show lenders stronger affordability.

Some banks are already recognising this link. Halifax, for example, now takes a property’s Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) into account when assessing affordability. A more efficient home means lower running costs, less financial strain, and potentially a more favourable borrowing position.

Lenders are also offering “green borrowing” products to help fund improvements. Nationwide’s Green Additional Borrowing lets existing customers borrow between £5,000 and £20,000 at 0% interest for two or five years, provided the funds are used for approved upgrades like insulation, heat pumps, or solar panels. This allows homeowners to make meaningful

changes without expensive finance.

Halifax takes another approach through its Green Living Reward scheme. Customers can receive up to £2,000 cashback for installing a heat pump, £1,000 for solar panels or batteries, and £500 for other improvements such as windows or insulation. Buyers and re-mortgagers of EPC A or B properties can also receive a £250 bonus.

The message is clear: investing in efficiency isn’t just good for the planet. It reduces bills, boosts comfort and can improve your standing with lenders. With green incentives growing, now may be the ideal time to review your home’s efficiency and your mortgage.

Self-Assessment Scams – Don’t Get Caught Out!

The Self-Assessment tax deadline isn’t until January – but if you are self-employed or a small business owner, this is for you!

You might receive an HMRC scam email, or a scammer could pretend to be HMRC over the phone or through a text message. Common tricks include offering a rebate, requesting you to update tax details, or threatening arrest for tax evasion.

Five ways to spot a fake HMRC scam

1) Fake HMRC email address: The key to spotting whether the address is real is to hover over the ‘from’ address. The actual link the text leads to will not end in @hmrc.gov.uk (which all official emails from HMRC will). Use this HMRC email address to report suspicious emails: phishing@hmrc.gov.uk

If you receive what you think is a text scam, forward it to 60599.

2) Tax rebate offers: An HMRC tax refund email is almost certainly a scam. Emails from HMRC will never offer you any repayment, tell you about a tax rebate, or ask you to send personal information.

3) Request for immediate action: Fraudsters will often try to scare you into complying by using phrases like “you only have three days to respond” or “urgent action required”.

4) Fake links and dodgy attachments: Any emails that contain links or have an attachment should be treated suspiciously. Don’t open any attachments that you aren’t expecting. These could contain viruses that will give scammers a backdoor into your computer and allow them to access your personal information, as well as your clients or customers.

5) Beware generic greetings: Be wary of emails that start ‘Dear Sir/Madam’, ‘Dear customer’ or ‘Hello’. Emails from HMRC will address you by your name. Report other types of HMRC scams

If you get:

• a message in an application, for example WhatsApp, take a screenshot and email it to phishing@hmrc.gov.uk

• a phone call asking for personal information or threatening a lawsuit, report it via the online form at www.gov.uk

• a letter, contact the HMRC team the letter says it’s from at www.gov.uk/contact-hmrc

• a message from a social media account, and you cannot verify the account it comes from, send details by email to security.custcon@hmrc. gov.uk and ignore it.

The Blacksmith Hanged for Murder

One evening in October 1787, William Mason had been drinking in a public house in Deeping St James. He set off in the dark to walk back to his farm in Deeping Fen, but half an hour later, a passer-by found him lying dead on the Spalding Road. His skull had been fractured and his cheek bone broken in several places.

An inquest concluded he had been wilfully murdered. At first, a man and woman were suspected of the crime, but soon John Wilson, a blacksmith in Church Street, Market Deeping, was arrested and taken to Spalding gaol. Newspapers printed an anonymous letter claiming that Mr Wilson had an infamous character and had frequently threatened the deceased. Readers were also informed that “several circumstances concur in proving his guilt.” Although no-one had seen him attack Mr Mason, he was publicly condemned before his trial.

John Wilson was fifty-four years old and took over the blacksmith’s business from his brotherin-law, John Harrison, whose family had owned it for several hundred years. His thatched cottage in the photograph was demolished in 1934 when the Empire Cinema was built on its site, and his smithy next-door had been replaced by a garage.

The murder trial was held in Lincoln Castle in March 1788 and lasted ten hours. With no forensic science in that era, evidence was circumstantial and based on statements from people who knew him and the victim. A guilty verdict was passed “to the satisfaction of every person who heard the trial” and he was sentenced to death by public hanging a few days later.

The gallows were opposite The Strugglers Inn in Westgate, Lincoln, not far from the Castle, and as John Wilson was a very tall man, the hangman had difficulty reaching up to put the rope round his neck. A chaplain then said a few prayers and Mr Wilson was allowed to speak to the crowd, declaring, “Had I been guilty, I should have been willing to confess it. I think it very hard in the strength and health I am in, to come to this for nothing. I leave behind me a weakly tender wife and should not wonder if the shock killed her in two or three days.” His execution was widely reported, noting that he persisted in his innocence with a firmness seldom seen in a person in his dreadful situation.

William Mason was buried in Bourne Abbey churchyard and four of his children aged between one and ten years were baptised there on the day of his funeral. John Wilson’s widow survived for another six years and a new blacksmith, Jeremiah Chantry from Thurlby, moved into the smithy in Church Street, Market Deeping.

The pair bring a wealth of knowledge, experience, and passion. Charlotte has over twenty years of teaching experience and holds a Fellowship with the IDTA (International Dance Teachers Association). Charlie, meanwhile, has fifteen years of teaching experience and has built a performance school that has taken dancers onto stages across the country. They believe they offer “the full package” – covering every aspect of dance, drama, and performance. “We each bring different strengths,” said Charlie,

“but combined, we really can tick every box. From technical training to stage skills and confidence building, we’re here to give children the best possible opportunities.” Charlotte added, “We’ve always shared a love of dance, and to be launching something new together feels so special. More than anything, we want to pass on the joy, discipline, and life lessons dance has given us.”

Their new school will welcome pupils of all ages and abilities, from beginners taking their first steps to advanced dancers preparing for the stage. Classes will be full of energy, creativity, and encouragement, with exciting performance opportunities along the way. The launch is already creating a buzz in the community, and enrolment is now open.

Families are invited to attend the Open Day on Saturday November 8th, from 9.30am – 12.30pm, with a K-Pop workshop afterwards. Regular classes will begin on Saturday November 15th at Deeping St James Community Primary School.

Market Deeping C.P.S. Scoop Prestigious Sports Award

In recognition of over five years of championing competitive sport and participation for the pupils, Market Deeping Community Primary School have become the first school in the region to be awarded the School Games Platinum Sports Mark.

This is a government-led scheme, facilitated by the Youth Sport Trust to reward schools for their commitment to the development of competition across their school and into the community.

During the last school year alone, children have played against schools from all over the area and teams have reached the Lincolnshire County Finals for girls’ football, boys’ football and boys’ cricket. They have competed in sportshall athletics, kin-ball, lacrosse, rugby, Tae Kwondo, ten-pin bowling and cross country running. Market Deeping C.P.S. staff, led by their sports lead Mrs Hayley Pickering, have organised various competitions for the schools in the Deepings and lead a range of clubs at school.

Rupert Gibson, School Games Organiser for Lincolnshire South East School Sport Partnership, said, “Huge congratulations to Market

Deeping Community Primary School … the first of the sixty-three schools across our region to ever achieve this National award.”

Headteacher, Mr Mark Ratchford, added, “We are very proud of achieving the Platinum Sports Mark and I am grateful to all the staff at our school for recognising the importance of competitive sport for our pupils.”
