Whilst I would never consider myself a football fan, I’ve got to admit that those fabulous Lionesses winning the Euros in Switzerland made me think it’s maybe not so bad after all. The most impressive memory that I’m taking from the win, however, must be the heroics of England veteran, Ms. Lucia Roberta
Tough Bronze MBE. This lady not only scored goals and defended bravely but admitted, only after picking up her winners’ medal, that she’d played the whole tournament with a fractured tibia! Whenever has a middle name (‘Tough’) seemed so appropriate?
Evenings will soon be ‘pulling in’ and a sign that Christmas isn’t too far away is that last week, we found out who will be this year’s contestants on “Strictly”. Finally, for those of you whose “little ones” are either starting school this time or going on to further education … enjoy the peace and quiet, at least for a little while!

As our sun-soaked summer of ’25 continues to give, it has certainly been a belter for any sporting fan. Think Lionesses, the British and Irish Lions, Wimbledon, and particularly a nail-biting cricket Test series against India. During the latter, a swashbuckling batsman, Rishabh Pant, was to keep sports headline compilers busy all summer. Here are some that just might have appeared:
“Pant’s on Fire” … as he crashed England’s bowlers all over the Headingley ground.
“Panty Woes” … as he, had to leave the field with an injured knee.

“Pant’s Back To (the) Front” … as he returned to bat, almost on one leg! And finally …
✦ Our dog loves Classical music, especially “The Tales of Hoffmann” –we’ve started calling him “Offenbach”.
✦ I woke up last week dreaming I’d invented a new colour, but it was only a pigment of my imagination.
Enjoy the read!

The rain didn’t put anyone off on Sunday August 3rd, as hundreds of people turned up on the banks of the River Welland for the annual Deepings Raft Race.

This year’s theme, Brilliant Books, inspired teams to turn their favourite stories into floating masterpieces, with The Wizard of Oz, Animal Farm, The Hunger Games, Treasure Island, Giraffes Can’t Dance, Gangsta Granny and Guinness World Records among the titles brought to life on the water.
A total of twenty-three teams took to the river, including four teams in the brand-new ‘Craft & Raft’ event, where competitors had to build their rafts on the riverbank before launching into the race.
Kevin Barber, Chairman of the Deepings Raft Race committee, praised the community for making the day a success: “We were thrilled to see so many people supporting the teams and enjoying the day. The effort that goes into the costumes, raft designs and sheer enthusiasm never fails to amaze us.”
● Youth Race: Mockingjay
● Craft & Raft: Soggy Bottoms
● Fun Race: Treasure Island
● Business Race: Billie’s Fins Swim School
● Pub & Hospitality Race: Thirsty Giraffe

● Main Race: Captain Ahab’s Lonely Harpoon Band
● Best Dressed Raft: Deeping Tennis Club (as The Wizard of Oz)
The Deepings Raft Race committee extends a huge thank you to all sponsors, volunteers and local organisations who help bring this event to life.
Once the total raised from the event has been calculated, the committee will be inviting local charities and community groups to apply for a donation. This marks a change from previous years where two or three headline charities have been supported. For 2025, the goal is to spread the impact more widely, offering smaller donations to a greater number of local causes.
“Keep an eye on our social media channels for details of how and when to apply,” said Kevin.
Save the Date for 2026: Sunday August 2nd

After finishing their SATs, Year 6 pupils focused their efforts on a real-life project. The goal was to organise and run a pop-up restaurant, for one evening, for parents and carers. The children got to work measuring the hall and tables before creating a seating plan for eighty people. They applied their understanding of ratio and proportion to upscale recipes before researching and calculating the cost of the ingredients. They also created table number cards, signs and chocolate gift boxes which they decorated and filled with homemade truffles.
The children then became chefs, chopping and preparing all the ingredients before cooking a chilli and making lots of cheesecakes. On the night, they ran the entire restaurant, from setting the tables and welcoming the guests, to serving the three-course meal and cleaning up afterwards.
The restaurant was an amazing success - well done to our Year 6 children. What a great way to end their time at Linchfield Academy, and we wish them all the best for their continued education journey onto secondary school!

Last term, Years 5 and 6 pupils had a visit from the ASEL security team, whose Head of Guarding, Rob Cook, spoke to the children about the impact of theft from retail stores and warned the children of the implications of shoplifting, petty theft and anti-social behaviour. Rob oversees security for many retail companies including the local Tesco store. He also spent time talking about different ways companies are looking to prevent and reduce crime, including the use of robots in stores in the future.
Headteacher, Mr Mark Ratchford, said, “It was good for the children to meet the security team and for them to be reminded they are there to help keep them safe in the community and that, if they are worried about the actions of peers or others, they can turn to the team at Tesco for help when they are not in school.”

Now is the time to lift potatoes before the arrival of cold damp days and before the slugs and worms can invade the crop: make sure they are well dried out before storing them in light-proof sacks.
Onions should also be lifted and if you are keen you can string them and then hang in a cool, frost-free place such as a shed. Cut courgettes and marrows regularly because they will be finished by the end of the month, as will outdoor tomatoes. Remove any green tomatoes and place them in a drawer or shoebox to ripen.
September is an ideal time to care for and improve your soil:
Composting: As you harvest crops and pull up spent plants, collect any leaves, plant debris, and vegetable peelings to add to your compost heap. Turn the compost to aerate it and speed up the decomposition process.
Green manures: If you have empty beds, consider sowing green manures like mustard, clover, or ryegrass. These will improve soil structure, add organic matter, and help suppress weeds over the winter.
Mulching: Adding a layer of organic mulch, such as well-rotted manure or garden compost, around your perennial plants (like fruit trees and bushes) will help retain moisture, suppress weeds, and improve the soil.
Clear weeds: Before they have a chance to set seed, remove any weeds. September is the last chance to get on top of them before growth slows down in winter.
Top-up raised beds: Raised beds tend to sink over time as organic matter breaks down. Top them up with fresh compost or well-rotted manure to prepare them for winter crops or to rest over winter.

Now is a good time to plant several crops which are hardy enough to withstand the winter or are fast growing. Some examples are:
• Lamb’s lettuce, oriental leaves, winter lettuces (“Valdor” “Arctic King” or “Winter Density” are good varieties to choose)
• Spring cabbage
• Peas for early harvest next spring
• Spinach
• Onion sets.
A few jobs that need doing include:
• Cut down asparagus to 2.5cms(1in) above the ground.
• Turn the compost heap and water if it is dry.
• Earth-up or stake Brussels and remove any yellowing lower leaves or those that have fallen off as these are ideal homes for pests to shelter. Tall growing varieties may need staking against autumn winds.
• Harvest apples and pears.
• Ripen pumpkins and squashes by removing leaves to allow sunlight in.
• Plant new strawberry plants and those propagated from runners.
• Apply nematodes to control slugs and snails while temperatures are still mild.
• Feed all late crops with a general fertiliser such as pelleted chicken manure.
• When your peas and beans finish, leave the roots in the ground after cutting and composting the top growth. This allows maximum nitrogen to re-enter the soil from the root nodules.
• Clear the soil of spent crops, leaving them to rot on the soil may spread disease.
Enjoy the fruits of your labour!

Cruising in the Caribbean is a perfect winter escape, offering warm sunshine, turquoise waters, and a relaxed pace that’s hard to beat. The region’s 7,000 idyllic islands are sprinkled across the crystal waters of the Caribbean Sea, which offers excellent diving and snorkelling opportunities, with shipwrecks, turtles, stingrays and teeming shoals of fish. Step ashore for charming ports shaped by the region’s colonial history; tropical interiors with vertiginous volcanic peaks; and golden palm fringed beaches. Whether you’re flying to the region or sailing from the UK, it’s an ideal way to soak up some much-needed winter sun.

Many travellers choose to fly to the Caribbean to begin their cruise. Popular departure ports include Miami and Barbados, with direct flights from the UK making the journey relatively easy. Starting your cruise in the heart of the Caribbean allows for a more intensive islandhopping experience, to all those dreamy destinations such as St. Lucia, Antigua, Grenada, St Kitts and the Virgin Islands
For those who prefer not to fly, cruising from the UK is an appealing alternative. Though the journey takes longer, it has its own charms. Sailing from Southampton means you can start your holiday as soon as you step aboard, and the voyage often includes stops in the Azores, Canary Islands or Spain before reaching the Caribbean, allowing for a broader travel experience.
Caribbean Cruising offers excellent value for money, with meals, accommodation,

entertainment, and travel between islands all included. Whether you’re seeking beach days, colonial culture, or more adventurous activities like snorkelling or zip-lining, a Caribbean cruise offers something for every type of traveller. With winter temperatures in the Caribbean averaging a balmy 26°C (79°F), it’s no wonder so many seek out the region as the ultimate sunny getaway during the colder months.
Get in touch and let me help select the perfect cruise operator and itinerary for your own Caribbean Island escape.

Alovely client of mine once shared a thought
I’ve never forgotten: “Planning my future feels empowering. I want to live well, but also know I’ve prepared for whatever life throws at me.” This simple wisdom rings especially true when thinking about how we make decisions about our health and personal welfare.
When most of us think about “what we own”, we picture the obvious, your house, your savings, perhaps a dusty guitar in the loft we’ve been meaning to restring since 1998! But these days, a huge part of our lives exists online, and when we die, it doesn’t vanish with us. Emails, social media profiles, online bank accounts, cloud photo libraries, cryptocurrency wallets… they all keep ticking away unless someone knows how to find them.
In England and Wales, it’s estimated that the average adult has well over one hundred different online accounts, from banking apps and Amazon logins to loyalty cards, streaming services, and obscure forum memberships you signed up for once and never visited again. That’s a digital paper trail longer than most people’s arm and, without a clear record, it can be a nightmare for loved ones trying to wrap up your affairs.
The problem? Passwords and security measures are designed to keep strangers out, but after you’ve gone, even the people you’d want to have access may find themselves locked

NICK ASH, Managing Director W&P Legal
out entirely. Accounts can remain dormant, subscriptions keep charging, or valuable assets (like PayPal balances or cryptocurrency) may be lost forever. Not to mention the emotional importance of photos, videos, and messages that could be stuck in an inaccessible account.
The solution is surprisingly simple: keep a secure, up-to-date list of your digital assets and where to find them. You don’t need to jot down every password (in fact, for security reasons, you shouldn’t store those in plain text) — but you should record:
● The type of asset (e.g. email account, online bank, social media profile)
● Where it’s held (website/app name, service provider)
● Any reference numbers, usernames, or details your executor might need
● How to locate any secure password manager you use.
This record should be stored somewhere safe, ideally a sealed document with your will, or an encrypted file your executor can access and make sure it’s regularly updated.
Think of it as leaving a treasure map. Without it, your digital possessions could be scattered and hidden forever. With it, your loved ones have a clear, legal route to gather, close, or preserve your online life.
It’s not morbid, it’s practical, caring, and a little bit kind. After all, you’ve spent years building your online world. Don’t let it disappear just because no one knows where you kept the keys.

with Rob Schwarz

n this month’s edition, I’m exploring financial planning and how it differs from traditional financial advice. In my opinion, the approach of traditional financial advisers has given our profession a bit of a bad rap…
+ Only accessible by the wealthy
+ Focused on selling products
+ An expensive and opaque service
Throughout my career, I’ve worked for traditional financial advice firms as well as, most recently, co-founding my own financial planning business, Finova Money Ltd.

In its simplest form, proper financial planning can be described as…
“Planning ahead, so that you have enough money to live your desired lifestyle forever, without the fear of your money running out.”
It’s about tailoring a financial roadmap for you and your family, so that you know you’re on track to achieve the things that are most important to you.
Whilst a financial planner does all the things a financial adviser can do, the financial planner goes one step further by helping clients answer big questions like…
+ Am I going to be okay?
+ When can work become a choice?
+ Can we afford to do the things we love?

Unlike financial advice firms who may have big barriers to entry (£500,000 minimum investment, for example), proper financial planning is much more accessible.

It's for anyone seeking financial stability, whether you’re just starting out and need guidance with budgeting and saving, or whether you’re a seasoned professional, planning for life after work. As such, the level of service you require should be determined by your unique circumstances, not by how much wealth you have accumulated or ‘assets under management’.

Building a roadmap which shows you where you are today and how to get to where you want to be will give you complete clarity over your financial future.
I’m happy to say that proper financial planning is on the rise and becoming more accessible.
This may involve…
+ Getting organised and tidying up your existing plans
+ Agreeing a bespoke savings plan to fill any gaps
+ Ensuring your plan is well-protected if anything happens to you
Armed with this information, you’ll feel confident about your future, knowing you have a robust plan in place to support it.

If any of the above sounds of interest, I’d be delighted to offer a free initial, 30-minute call to see how I may be able to help – just scan the QR code below. See you next month!

Have you been refused a mortgage or equity release due to spray foam?
If you suspect you’ve been misled or had a poor-quality removal, act now! Contact us for a FREE survey and expert advice before it’s too late.
The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) states that spray foam may affect a property's valuation, particularly if applied incorrectly. Spray foam can reduce airflow in the roof, potentially leading to issues like mould, wood rot, and reduced structural stability.
❌ Foam left behind in eaves – Often hidden and hard to reach without proper access (scaffolding may have been necessary).
❌ Torn or damaged roofing felt – Careless removal can cause holes, leading to leaks and structural issues.
❌ Foil tacked to rafters – A common trick used to hide incomplete removal, preventing proper inspection.

What is Swanky Rags?” I hear you ask… maybe Peterborough’s best kept secret when it comes to Prom, occasional wear, and weddings. We have been dressing ladies in the finest of gowns for all their special occasions since 2006 and we are going from strength to strength. As styles change, so do we and we aim to have the most sought-after designs in store, at all prices to fit everyone’s budget.
Prom ’25 was our biggest and best yet. Such a huge success and all our swanky girls looked absolutely stunning in their chosen dresses, some of which can be seen on our Instagram and Facebook pages, through photos they have sent us of them in their dresses.
The Prom 2026 season kicks off with some very exciting news… we are going to the EXCLUSIVITY of the UK’s leading designer and supplier of Prom Dresses, Evening Wear and Leavers Party Dresses in the UK: PROM FROCKS – which guarantees no saturation of the same brands in every shop selling the same dresses. That’s a scoop! We are so excited to be bringing this brand to Peterborough stores and have already been to choose our dresses for Prom ’26, and they are dazzling.
One question we always get asked is, “When should you start Prom shopping?” and the answer is unbelievable, but October is the perfect start time – our appointment book is now open and starting to fill up for half term. “Why so early?” you may think. Well, we get our new season dresses in September/October and it's always ‘first come-more choice’ as we only sell one style of dress to one function – not even in a different colour. To ensure this, we keep a Prom log and as the dresses are sold to each school, they are logged to that school, and we don’t allow customers that attend the same school to even try on any dress that may have been logged.
Right now, we have a massive sale on with prices from £50, so if you can’t wait and want to grab a bargain, contact us at www.swankyrags.co.uk, or follow us on Facebook and Instagram and get yourself an appointment now.

If you’ve been renting a council house for a few years, you might be sitting on a big opportunity: the chance to buy your home and get onto the property ladder.
Thanks to the government’s Right to Buy scheme, you could get up to £24,000 off the purchase price of your home (that’s the current cap in our region). And while the discounts aren’t as generous as they used to be before November 2024, it’s still a serious saving.
● You already know and love your home - no need for a costly move!
● Enjoy the discount; up to £24,000 could make a huge impact on your mortgage.
● You’ll be investing in your future, instead of paying someone else’s.
● You can decorate, improve, and even extend your home more freely.
But it’s not all sunshine. Owning your home means you’ll be responsible for repairs and maintenance, and you’ll

need a mortgage, so it’s worth chatting to an adviser about what you can afford. Since the government announced these changes in late 2024, councils across Lincolnshire, including South Kesteven, have seen a spike in applications, often up to ten times the usual monthly volumes.
If you’ve lived in your council home for at least three years and you’re curious about what’s possible, have a chat with us. We can go over how much you could borrow and what your monthly costs could look like, going forward.

It is never too early to think about ‘winter-proofing’ your property and your pocket. Energy saving remains a hugely important topic, as does trying to get the very best deal when it comes to heating, insulating and protecting your home.
However, this is something the fraudsters will also be aware of, with numerous scams out there. These will most likely involve people pretending to be energy suppliers, regulators, or other associated companies to gain your trust and trick you into sharing personal and/or financial information through cold calling, social media, emails, website pop-ups or texts.
Scams to be aware of:
Solar Panels: Some scammers might use the fact you have solar panels to try and pressure you into maintenance contracts. Beware also of fraudulent companies texting to mislead homeowners by saying their ‘solar panel warranty has expired’ or companies that contact or cold call to sell you a ‘maintenance package’ while pretending to be with the certified Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS).

Ofgem Energy: This is where a scammer claims to be from the energy regulator Ofgem. They may ask you to change your bank details or provide personal information to get funding or cheap energy. Ofgem will never ask you for personal information, sell you energy, or show up at your house.
Home Improvements: Be cautious if a company contacts you claiming that your home poses safety risks. Common scams may involve offers to install energy efficiency upgrades that promise to reduce your utility bills or claims that your spray foam insulation requires removal.
Meter Scams: Smart meters are free to install. Your energy supplier should organise the installation, carried out by a qualified professional. Scammers may impersonate your provider or another company to trick you into agreeing to an installation, sometimes requesting an upfront fee or personal details.
Energy Rebate: Although the Energy Bills Support Scheme £400 Government energy bill rebate ended in March 2023, some scammers are still trying to trick homeowners into handing over personal and financial details.
If you think you may have been the victim of fraud, report the scam to Action Fraud and Citizens Advice.

The chill of the freshly cut ice, the roar of a loyal and energetic crowd and the thrill of the hard-hitting pace of the UK’s fastest indoor sport –all guaranteed when the “Wendy’s Peterborough Phantoms Ice Hockey Club” take to the ice for the 2025/26 season in September.
The Phantoms are about to embark on a new dawn at the club, following the departure of long-serving and much-loved Head Coach, Slava Koulikov, at the end of last season. The new man at the helm, Ashley Tait, has over one hundred Great Britain international caps to his name, alongside an esteemed club career –marking an exciting appointment for the Phantoms.
Despite ice hockey being one of the fastest growing sports in the UK, many local people may not know that Peterborough has a team – a successful one at that, with several trophy successes in the cabinet over the last ten years. The sport itself is played in three periods of twenty minutes, with the clock stopping at each whistle, ensuring maximum entertainment for the duration of every game. And, unlike most other team sports, ice hockey is always played to a conclusion, with the enthralling prospect of overtime and penalty shots a genuine possibility on a weekly basis.
The Phantoms play in the Planet Ice National Ice Hockey League, the second division of the sport within the UK, and consistently prove to be stern, competitive opponents for everyone in their division. The Phantoms’ team consists of several hometown heroes, long serving Brits, bright local prospects and skilled players from overseas – culminating in a brilliant group, full of talent and desire to battle hard for the club.
On the weekend of September 6th and 7th, the Wendy’s Peterborough Phantoms welcome foreign opposition to Planet Ice Peterborough for a pair of eagerly anticipated pre-season fixtures against Neuillysur-Marne of the French second tier. The new league season begins two weeks later!
If you’d be interested in going to watch the Wendy’s Peterborough Phantoms, fixtures can be found at www.gophantoms.co.uk/gameday/2025-26-fixtures with tickets available to purchase online at www.gophantoms.co.uk/tickets.
Two family tickets (2 adults +2 juniors) are up for grabs to see any home Wendy’s Peterborough Phantoms Ice Hockey game this season.

For your chance to win one of these, just answer the following question: In which part of Peterborough do the Wendy’s Peterborough Phantoms Ice Hockey Club play their home games: a) Orton Bushfield b) Werrington c) Bretton?
Email your answer to sales@discoveringmagazines.co.uk or post to Discovering Magazines, PO Box 164, Bourne PE10 1ET Closing date for entries: 20/09/25

For several months, Deeping people had been robbed of a huge amount of property.

Everything from beehives, pig troughs and grindstones to hammers, spades, kettles and baskets; ironmongery of all kinds and children’s prams had been taken. When the thief was captured and brought before magistrates in the Town Hall, a large crowd gathered outside. There was reported to have been much hissing and booing and considerable commotion and excitement. It was in February 1866, and a local photographer captured the scene, providing us with the earliest image of the Market Place.
The thief was later tried at Bourne Sessions and sentenced to eighteen months of hard labour. His hoard of stolen goods was spread out in the Market Place, and the Town Crier summoned villagers to identify and reclaim their possessions.
Another event caused a great sensation in October 1897 when a battalion of the Lincolnshire Regiment marched into the centre of Market Deeping. It was a rare sight as the custom of marching infantry had died out with the coming of the railways. The soldiers were on a recruitment mission and, despite it being a rainy day, many onlookers enjoyed the spectacle.
In May 1900, people from Deeping and neighbouring villages created their own dramatic scene to

celebrate the relief of the siege of Mafeking during the Boer War. Some dressed up as famous generals, wounded soldiers, John Bull and Britannia, with many banners flying. Horses, ladies on decorated bicycles, and the fire engine joined in a procession through the streets which ended in the Market Place where the National Anthem was sung, and a Punch and Judy booth erected.
A few years later in 1907, General William Booth’s visit was more sedate. Known as the ‘grand old man’ of the Salvation Army, he stood in an open motor-vehicle and addressed a large crowd of all denominations near the Town Hall. Easily recognised by his long, white beard, he was said to be very heartily received.
Over centuries, the Market Place has hosted celebrations for numerous royal events, when buildings were decorated with flags and garlands.

For the coronation of King George V in June 1911, a twelve-hour programme of entertainment included a parade from Langtoft headed by Mr Gibbons’ traction engine pulling wagonloads of children. It caused a great stir when it drew up outside The Bull, and a late-evening firework display completed festivities.

In recent times, Deeping Carnival parade brought music and colour to the streets each summer with decorated floats. In June 1978, their theme was ‘Nursery Rhymes and Fairy Tales’ and the winning entry depicted the Pied Piper of Hamelin, shown here rounding the corner near Jack Blades’ shop.

If you’ve ever thought about giving singing a go, NOW is your chance! We’re inviting around forty women to join a fun, ten-week singing project, starting in September.
Working towards a fantastic live performance at The Cresset on November 6th, you’ll learn to sing, meet new people, perform live on stage AND raise money for Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice, with plenty of laughs along the way!
Over one hundred women sang last year and raised thousands of pounds for charity. Most of them had never sung, rehearsed or performed as part of a group – or in public – before, and here’s what they had to say:
✦ Loved every moment and wish I could do it all over again!
✦ An amazing experience… the support was fantastic!
✦ Fabulous experience shared with a great group of women!
Annette Mawby, Community Fundraiser at Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice says: "We're completely in

awe of the passion and dedication that participants bring to this project. The funds raised help Sue Ryder continue to support people going through the hardest times of their lives, ensuring no one faces dying or grief alone.”
#Sing4Life2025 kicks off with introduction sessions at the John Mansfield Campus in Peterborough (PE14HX) on September 4th (7pm-9pm), September 5th (7pm-9pm) and September 6th (2pm-4pm).
There’s NO pressure - just a friendly introduction and a chance to meet the team and some of the other women who’ll be taking part.
