Halifax is a large, coastal region in Nova Scotia, Canada. Surrounded by seascapes and picturesque lakes, Halifax is the perfect balance of hip and historic, with experiences as diverse as the visitor’s imagination. Whether you are looking to sample craft beer or classic lobster, surf North Atlantic swells, or quietly connect with our pristine coastal wilderness, we have memories waiting to be made. Our diverse region is evolving and there’s never been a better time to visit. Come see why everyone is talking about Halifax.

DID YOU KNOW? The Halifax Harbour is one of the deepest and largest natural, ice-free harbours in the world, ranked alongside Sydney, Australia and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Halifax boasts one of the world’s longest waterfront boardwalks. The promenade runs for 10 city blocks and is visited by 2 million people each year. Halifax leases the beloved Point Pleasant Park from the British for one shilling a year and has a 999-year lease! CNN featured Halifax’s Central Library in its list of “10 Eye-Popping New Buildings” in 2014.

The Fairview Lawn Cemetery has the world’s largest collective group of graves from the Titanic tragedy. What’s more, the graves are aligned to form the curved “hull” of a ship. The #1-rated Halifax attraction on TripAdvisor is the Halifax Public Gardens, one of the finest surviving examples of a Victorian garden in North America. The Halifax Citadel National Historic Site is the most visited National Historic Site in Canada. The practice of firing a daily “noon gun” began in 1856 and continues to this day. It has been more than a century since the Great Halifax Explosion of 1917; the largest man-made detonation prior to the atomic bomb of 1945 in Hiroshima, Japan. Civil rights pioneer and former resident of Halifax’s North End, Viola Desmond, is featured on the Canadian $10 bill.

A NOTE FROM

MAYOR

MIKE SAVAGE As Mayor of the Halifax Regional Municipality, I look forward to welcoming you to our beautiful port city and our many special coastal communities. Halifax is the heart of Atlantic Canada — a world class destination with a laid-back sensibility and a legendary history of welcoming people.

ACADIAN HERITAGE

From storytelling, humour, and customs to songs, step dancing, fiddle and pipe music, there are so many ways to learn about Gaels and Gaelic culture, traced back to both Scotland and Ireland.

NORTH END HALIFAX VERIFIABLY COOL: THE NORTH END RENAISSANCE The vibrant and trendy North End piques curiosity with its much-lauded restaurant and shopping scene and lively nightlife. And it’s filled with history; following the Great Halifax Explosion of 1917, the majority of the area was destroyed. This made way for the development of iconic neighbourhoods such as the Hydrostone, which is now a locally-loved market with shops and restaurants. You will also find the North End featured on the Canadian $10 bill, along with local civil rights activist Viola Desmond. Home to over 350 independently-owned shops, restaurants and businesses, as well as an eclectic group of artists, musicians, poets and painters, you’ll pick up on the relaxed, creative energy of the area from its colourful saltbox houses, craft cideries and thriving arts scene. The North End also features some of the best examples of Halifax’s architectural heritage, including the Little Dutch Church, the Armouries and the Creighton Field Heritage District (Gottingen Street is over 250 years old). Gottingen and Agricola Streets are both great for an inspired stroll and hip street style. This is an iconic neighbourhood you’ll want to return to again and again. #ilovenorthend

A MUST VISIT: AFRICVILLE MUSEUM 5795 Africville Road, North End Halifax

For over a century, Africville in the North End was home to many Black Nova Scotians until it was demolished to make way for Halifax’s industrial expansion in the 1960s. The Africville Museum, located in a replica of the community’s Seaview United Baptist Church, showcases the resilience of the area’s original inhabitants. africvillemuseum.org
