Staying Healthy

D U R I N G T H E H O L I DAYS

The holidays can be stressful, and we end up eating rich and unfamiliar foods, which can upset your system and cause weight gain. So I have selected four products that can support your gut and immune health throughout the season: Vitamin D, Acerola Powder, Fibre and Probiotics. Vitamin D supports our immune system and is also a building block for serotonin, which is our happy neurotransmitter. When we lack Vitamin D, it's hard to build serotonin, and we start feeling blue. So it's great for mood support. Acerola Powder is freeze-dried Barbados cherry - a whole food complex, a rich, bioavailable source of natural Vitamin C - so the absorption rate is much higher than with regular Vitamin C. It’s a favourite of mine to boost the immune system.

The Fibre I have chosen is low FODMAP, low in sugar saccharides that can cause gas. It completely dissolves in your drink and tastes a bit like a pina colada. You can drink some before a party to fill you up a little bit, so you are less likely to overeat, and it will help you maintain regularity. We’ve all been at a party, had something to eat and then we're like, Ooh, that gurgle hits. I like to throw a couple of probiotic pills into my purse, so when I experience that gurgle or start feeling gassy or cramping or bloating, I can take one right away. Probiotics are excellent for daily maintenance of gut health, as well as if you have a gastrointestinal flare-up. COURTESY OF NICOLE RYGAILO, RHN, HOOPERS PHARMACY & VITAMIN SHOP

Regeneration Outreach Community recently celebrated its twentieth anniversary of serving people in need in our community. With an increase of meals served by approximately ten percent this year and with a growing number of people facing homelessness, Regen has been sensitive and creative in helping to meet the needs of those in our community who are living in poverty. Recent developments at Regen have included increasing our capacity for rescuing food through partnerships with restaurants, grocery stores and logistic chains. With support from local businesses, churches and other private donors, Regen has purchased a refrigerated truck and commercial refrigerators and freezers that have allowed food to be put into the hands of those who need it most. Regeneration has also launched the Regeneration Thrift Store, located just minutes from the downtown core at 253 Queen St. East. This promising venture had its grand opening on August 30th and will support future sustainability as the needs of Brampton grow and shift. It relies heavily on donations and volunteers from Brampton community members. The hope is that this store will allow for future services for guests as Regeneration continues to respond to the needs of the most vulnerable in our downtown. As the need for primary healthcare has been evident for Regen’s valued guests, a significant investment, with the help of donors, has been put into creating a space for nurses, residents and chiropractors to meet one-on-one with clients who face barriers in receiving medical attention. This space has allowed medical professionals to meet with guests, managing chronic illnesses that could otherwise result in trips to emergency and extended hospital stays. We asked Grettel Comas from Baci Gifts to give us her secrets for building a perfect gift basket. Here are her best tips.

Who is it for?

When I am building a gift basket, the first thing I ask is, Who is it for? What does that person like? Is it a woman? Does she love jewelry or is she more into home decor? Is she into clothing? It’s the little details that are going to guide me in selecting what goes into the gift. For example, if you know the person’s favourite colour, you will be pleasing this person twice, not just for the gift they are receiving, but also by the colour because it’s going to be there. The connection is there.

What is your budget? Next, consider your budget. You can create a beautiful gift, and it doesn’t have to be expensive. A scarf or a pair of slippers in an unusual container can be the perfect gift & will delight the eye. If you can spend more, you can create a more spectacular basket.

Container or Theme? Sometimes you select the container you are going to work with, and other times, you start with a product and build around it. If I have a handbag, I’m going to introduce products that are going to work for the person who is going to receive this.

E

If I have a baby gift, and a wagon to fill, I have to build surrounding the shape of the wagon. No two gifts are the same. That is what makes it interesting.

Presentation is everything. Presentation is as important as the gift. If it is beautiful and pleasing to the eye, it is already a gift. At Baci Gifts, we have fancy paper and gift boxes. Everything has to look pretty either in a gift basket or in gift wrapping. We have luxurious organza to wrap our baskets as well as cellophane. It’s the extra touches that make the gift, such as rich ribbons, a spray of berries or even a few crystals.

What’s hot right now. Charcuterie boards are trendy right now. They are fantastic gifts for men and women. You can put some foodie items with them. Jams, spices, preserves, or you can go with wine and cheese.

PARADISE Whether you’re sitting around a holiday dinner table with your closest family, sharing a decadent dessert at a local coffee shop with your significant other, or crowded around the kitchen counter eating from takeout containers with your friends - food brings people together! According to Culture Trip, Brampton is becoming the new foodie destination in Ontario. With some of the hottest foodie personalities and chefs, such as Suresh Doss and Matty Matheson, making appearances at the local farmers market this past summer; it’s no wonder that Brampton is the hot spot for a variety of different cuisines and the place to be if you’re looking for unique and delicious dining experiences. 9 QUEEN CHINESE (9 QUEEN ST. E.) boasts a carefully curated menu, with an intricately decorated interior complete with beautiful murals and is the perfect place to visit when you’re craving authentic Chinese food. However, if you’re looking for comfort food, look no further than LITTLE SHOP OF ICE CREAM (1 THEATRE LANE). Contrary to what the shop’s name suggests, this shop is more than just ice cream - think gourmet grilled cheeses filled with toppings such as jalapenos, pears, pesto, and mac & cheese and homemade soups just like grandma used to make!

If you’re looking for a restaurant with boho-chic decor, a full bar and Eastern-European flair, check out QUEEN GYPSY (10 MAIN ST. S.). Offering full restaurant bookings, this cozy spot in Downtown Brampton serves up authentic EasternEuropean fare, such as goulash, cabbage stew and pork schnitzel and is the perfect place to warm up on a cold, winter evening. If you’re looking for more flavours that remind you of home, pop into LA FAVORITA LATIN MARKET (18 QUEEN ST. W.) for traditional South and Central American foods, such as empanadas, sweet pastries, and miga sandwiches, while MI CHURROS (HARMSWORTH LN.) promises the best churros in all of Downtown Brampton. AFRICAN MARKET (19 QUEEN ST. W.) sells traditional African foods and items that you can’t find anywhere else in the city and is the perfect spot for those looking for a taste of home.

For those looking for a quick snack, pop into DAS BREZEL HAUS (25B MAIN ST. N.) for authentic, handmade German pretzels that come in fun flavours such as chocolatedipped, smores, cinnamon sugar, and more! And if that won’t satisfy your sweet tooth, MACARONZ (43 QUEEN ST. E.) will surely do the trick. The French-inspired shop serves brightly coloured macarons in every flavour imaginable, as well as mini donuts and a selection of artisan teas. If you’re looking for a unique dining experience, plan a dinner at BLACKSTONE STEAKHOUSE AND GRILL (31 GEORGE ST. N.).
