Coastline & nautical charm

Family fun on West Wittering’s Beach

Chic, sandy and unspoilt, West Wittering’s beach and sand dunes will more than whet your appetite. The classic promenade of beach huts adorning the shoreline, combined with clean, crystal clear waters have long made it a favourite destination for sporty sailors, sassy surfers and families looking for a traditional bucket and spade holiday alike. It is no wonder it’s considered one of the premier ‘Blue Flag’ beaches in the country. Take a walk around East Head’s wild and grassy sand dunes – a ‘Site of Special Scientific Interest’ and a wetland site of international importance. Popular with wind and kite surfers, the shallow lagoons and sandy flats also provide ample opportunity for ramblers and cyclists as the beach lands can be enjoyed all year round. Nearby Pagham Harbour Nature Reserve is home to all kinds of wildlife – including waders, kestrels, barn

owls, oystercatchers, weasels and voles, plus butterflies and dragonflies in the summer. Botanists too can enjoy the variety of unusual and rare plants including the ‘Childling Pink’ and ‘Southern Marsh Orchid’. Moving East along the Manhood Peninsula, Selsey is ideal for family summer holidays and cosy winter breaks offering diving and snorkelling to cycling and bird watching. Add

a bit of kayaking, golf and fishing, there’s plenty to keep the whole family occupied all year round. All of these activities are made better thanks to Selsey’s sunny ‘microclimate’. Laze on the beach and watch the small fleet of inshore fishing boats bring in the famous ‘Selsey Crab’. Later, treat yourself to such ‘tastes of the sea’ at the many restaurants, seafront cafes and waterside pubs serving fresh locally caught delicacies. Depending on the season, the crab, shellfish and lobster are menu favourites, or eat piping hot fish ‘n’ chips whilst strolling along the promenade. Friendly family owned shops line the colourful high street, offering crab lines, windbreaks, surf boards and of course, buckets and spades!

the RNLI Lifeboat Station and its museum depict the daring rescues of the RNLI. Keep your eyes peeled and you might even see the launch of the lifeboat! Whether you want to camp under canvas or relax in furnished comfort and style, this coastal region is particularly well served with a wide range of accommodation establishments for those who cannot resist the call of the seaside.

In summer, Selsey buzzes with the sound of music and festivities. The variety of fêtes, carnivals and festivals is guaranteed to entertain the whole family. Not to be missed,

Picturesque Bosham, located towards the east of Chichester Harbour, is well known as a excellent sanctuary for migrating wildfowl and a wonderful centre for sailing. Famous for its oyster harvesting, traditional boat building and fishing, this pretty village is now a hive of activity with its sailing club and arts and crafts centre. There’s even a church that dates back to Saxon times and is depicted in the Bayeux Tapestry!

Downs & Historic Towns Experience world famous polo, afternoon cream teas, antique shops brimming with treasures and spectacular South Downs scenery; just right for a cosy retreat or tasteful holiday.

Discover Petworth

12

www.visitchichester.org

Nestled in the beautiful scenery of the South Downs National Park, Midhurst and Petworth are full of character and bursting with old world charm. Georgian architecture and old half-timbered buildings sit easily alongside stylish boutiques and fashionable eateries. Midhurst’s famous past resident, HG Wells, is known to have set many of his stories in the town, including his best-known novel “The Invisible Man”. On the edge of the town, features the grand Tudor ruins of Cowdray House; Cowdray Park which hosts polo’s most prestigious event – The Gold Cup. In the summer, watch as dashing polo players mingle with couturier-clad ladies and chic gentlemen! Cup polo is played every weekend and bank holiday from April to September with additional midweek sessions too.

The South Downs National Park is the newest National Park and the tenth to be designated in England. Why not walk, ride or cycle part of the South Downs Way, which crosses the district from Bury to South Harting, passing Roman roads, Bronze Age burial mounds and Iron Age hill forts along the way. Other scenic trails include the Sussex Diamond Way, from Midhurst to near Petworth, the Lipchis Way from Liphook to Chichester, and the Serpent Trail from Haslemere via Midhurst and Petersfield.

Petworth, with its winding streets and quaint old buildings, gives the impression of ‘time standing still’. But beneath this tranquil façade Petworth boasts the South’s best collection of antique shops, where ‘sought-after’ collector’s items and affordable treasures can be picked up. Petworth House, which adjoins the town, is tranquilly located amidst parkland designed by Capability Brown. Built in 1309, finally completed in 1696, this National Trust gem is crammed with paintings by Turner, Van Dyck and Reynolds. Don’t miss Polo at Cowdray the chance to settle down with Park a picnic and enjoy an open air concert or the Petworth Festival in July with its musical performances, lively lectures and art exhibitions.

Discover Roman remains at Fishbourne Roman Palace

Steeped in history, Chichester’s cathedral, with its fine Norman arches, 12th century architecture and collection of modern art is a great landmark from which to start your journey. Ancient circular walls surround the city with four major thoroughfares within. These intersect at the central Tudor Market Cross, providing not just a compass point for North, South, East and West streets but also a focal point and resting spot for busy visitors. Discover the history of Chichester at The Novium, the City’s newest major attraction where you can view the remains of a Roman bath house. See more evidence of past Roman life at the recently refurbished Fishbourne Roman Palace and its hands-on ‘Collection & Discovery Centre’. In the City, wander along to The Guildhall which was once part of a grand Fransiscan Friary that stood in Prioy Park and is now used for exhibitions and events or take a journey to the stars and visit the South Downs

Planetarium, one of the largest planetaria in the UK. Take a ride back in time on board a vintage bus at the nostalgic Amberley Museum and Heritage Centre or experience the past 500 years in authentic buildings at the Weald and Downland Open Air Museum, as well as visiting historic houses, parks and gardens at Petworth, Goodwood, Uppark, Parham and Stansted. To the east of Chichester lies Tangmere Military Aviation Museum, with aircraft and aviation memorabilia depicting scenes, many from the ‘Battle of Britain’. For those who enjoy messing about on the water, how about a trip around Chichester Harbour aboard Solar Heritage, a solarpowered catamaran?

A Hassle Free Stay

What is a quality assessment? Quality Assessment seeks to help advise you, before you book accommodation, on the different levels of quality, facilities and services you can expect as guests. Visit Chichester Assessment Scheme Visit Chichester is committed to providing the highest quality facilities and ensuring the best possible stay for visitors to the district. VCAS gives small and independent B&B/Guest Houses and self-catering businesses the option of being assessed by a local and flexible scheme. It involves quality control checks by experienced local accommodation assessors to ensure that all the participating accommodation establishments meet a minimum and acceptable standard of quality. Businesses that have been assessed have achieved the required standards in all sections. Cleanliness and hospitality are a high priority for these businesses.

20

AA Rosettes show achievement in offering exceptional quality in food. AA Red Star Award indicates hotels that stand out as the very best in the UK. They are selected for their exceptional quality of accommodation and customer service. Green Tourism Business Award (GTBA) Businesses awarded the GTBA are assessed once every two years. They are graded against over 120 measures of best practice, reflecting a balance of environmental, economic and social issues. Accessibility Across the Chichester region, businesses are committed to welcoming all visitors. Many take particular care to ensure their properties are accessible to guests with disabilities. Please use our key to symbols opposite to identify accessible properties. Please contact accommodation providers directly to discuss any specific requirements.

Holiday Parks: This category includes Holiday Parks, Touring Parks and Camping Parks or any combination of these. The rating for Holiday Home, Touring and Camping Parks reflects the overall quality of the park. This includes parks which cater for Touring Caravans and/or Tents and may or may not include Caravan Holiday Homes, some of which may be available for hire.

Hotel Rating: This category includes Hotels, Country House Hotels, Small Hotels, Town House Hotels and Metro Hotels. A hotel must have a minimum of 6 bedrooms (en-suite with private bathroom), be licensed and offer dinner (unless suitable for Metro Hotel category). Guest Accommodation: This category includes B&Bs, Guest Houses, Farmhouses, Inns, Restaurants with Rooms, Guest Accommodation and Rooms only. These properties are likely to be smaller than hotels with perhaps more of a family home feel and approach. Self Catering: Self catering accommodation has its own kitchen and bathroom facilities. Most properties take bookings by the week, generally from a Friday or Saturday but short breaks are increasingly common.

Gold & Silver Awards: These accolades are given to hotels and guest accommodation with exceptional quality in all areas, especially service and hospitality.
