D
escribed as “The Queen of Harps”, Welsh harpist Catrin Finch has delighted audiences with her performances in the UK and worldwide. Inspired to learn the harp at
the age of five, her rise to prominence started almost immediately, achieving the highest mark in the UK for her Grade VIII exam at the age of nine. She studied with Elinor Bennett for eight years before entering the Purcell School. Catrin graduated from the Royal Academy of Music in 2002 where she studied with Skaila Kanga and received the Queen’s Award for the most outstanding student of her year. Some of her many achievements include:
• Collaborations with composer Karl Jenkins on stage and disc, including the première of a double harp concerto commissioned by H.R.H. the Prince of Wales. • Half a million hits on You Tube for her performance of Karl Jenkins’ Palladio. • Recording for most of the major international recording companies, including Universal Records, Deutsche Grammophon, EMI and Sony Classical, both solo and with notable artists such as Bryn Terfel, Sir James

Inspiring Creative Minds A converted chapel on the outskirts of Cardiff, Acapela offers a beautiful and peaceful environment to inspire creative minds. Originally constructed in 1835, the building houses a traditional concert hall featuring timber flooring and a high ceiling, providing fantastic natural reverberation. The studio and concert venue is now a flourishing arts hub. Officially opened in 2007 by entrepreneur Hywel Wigley and international harpist Catrin Finch, Acapela has seen a constant stream of both established and up and coming artists both to record and perform, including Bonnie Tyler, Karl Jenkins, Julian Lloyd-Webber, Gruff Rhys, Charlotte Church and Cerys Matthews, and young artists such as Ellie Makes Music, Rusty Shackle and Remembering August. It has quickly become one of the leading studios and arts venues in Wales, at a time of struggling cultural austerity. Acapela has a full programme of events scheduled for the next few months and concert goers can look forward to local girl and former X Factor star Lucie Jones, Big Mac’s Wholly Soul Band, Catrin Finch, comedian Rod Woodward, Radio 2 Folk Award winners Josienne Clarke and Ben Walker as well as folk sensations Spiro. These names are in addition to the regular bimonthly nights such as Jazz @ Acapela, Classical Café, Acapela Soul Club, and Acapela Unsigned (where once the legendary Alan McGee of Creation Records and Mike Smith, Head of Music, Virgin/EMI were in the audience)! This wonderful music can be enjoyed with a fine and varied selection of local craft ales and ciders which can be purchased at the fully stocked bar.

It’s nearly ten years ago since we purchased Acapela, and it has since been on a long artistic and musical journey with us. In 2006, we were expecting our first daughter, so having a studio in the house was no longer practical, and it just so happened that the “Horeb Chapel” had closed its doors to the congregation for the final time, marking the end of an era in its life. After the necessary building work, we officially re-opened its doors as a recording studio and welcomed both local and international musicians to record with us. More recently, we have been welcoming artists for live events and concerts, and it has been the greatest pleasure for us to see this wonderful old Chapel sing again with music and merriment. Acapela is a labour of love, and our team is passionately committed to the arts and music. There is a warm welcome here for everyone, and we hope you can enjoy some of our up-coming events. Thank you for your support!

Working Grandparents to Be Given Paid Leave The Government recently announced that it is proposing to introduce a legal right for grandparents to take paid time off work for grandchildren caring duties.
The announcement serves as a reminder to employers and employees alike that the Government is seeking to further enhance so called ‘Family Friendly Rights’.
Whilst the detail has yet to be announced the plan will involve extending the current system of shared parental leave to cover grandparents, as well as the child’s mother and father.
Whilst this is good news for employees, many employers, particularly in the SME sector will be concerned at the increasing legislation which allows employees either a right to time off or a right to apply to work flexible hours.
Parents will be able to share up to 50 weeks of leave and up to 37 weeks of parental leave pay, currently £139.58 a week or 90% of average weekly earnings, whichever is lower, with a nominated working grandparent.
Employees already have a number of rights, collectively referred to as Family Friendly Rights, although many are subject to qualifying criteria.
These include: Maternity Leave Up to 52 weeks leave and 39 weeks Statutory Maternity Pay.
Flexible Working Employees have a right to make application to work flexibly.
Adoption Leave Up to 52 weeks leave and 39 weeks Statutory Adoption Pay.
Parental Leave Up to 18 weeks unpaid leave for each child under 18 years of age.
Paternity Leave Up to 2 weeks leave paid and Paternity Pay of two weeks.
Shared Parental Allows new parents the choice to take up to Leave 50 weeks leave in total on the birth of a child instead of maternity, paternity or adoption leave.
Dependant’s Leave Unpaid leave to deal with particular family or household emergencies.
Whilst flexible working legislation has often been met with a cool response from employers, the UK government’s Fourth Work Life Balance Employer Survey showed that 97% of employers surveyed had at least one form of flexible working available and that 79% of flexible working requests in the UK in the survey period were agreed by the employer. It may well be that employers recognise that employees who are able to maintain a work life balance are more contented and as a result more productive.

How Do You Choose The Right Residential Care Home? Listen to What The Residents Say! When looking to make a decision on the choice of a residential care home it is always very difficult to know that you are making the correct decision. Of course a personal visit to the home will hopefully give you assurance that you are making the right decision for you or your loved one. However listening to what the residents and their family and friends say about the home is probably one of the best ways to see exactly what standards of care the home provides.

Remember When You Were Young!! If you are of a certain age you will certainly remember Scribble Downs. The thrill of opening a Kellogs Cornflakes pack and putting your hand into the cornflakes to search for the rub down stickers is remembered fondly by everyone. Everyone had their own favourite – whether they were aliens, pirates, cowboys, princesses or fairies – siblings would wait patiently for the cornflakes to slowly lower in the packet. Then the free for all began as families fought to get the rub down packs as they appeared in the bottom of the packet. Loved and missed by all, the moment a parent sees the Scribble Down range they immediately want their child to experience the thrill of this great craft and design activity — as they did many years ago. Since their launch in 2012 Scribble Downs have now sold over 1 million items across the UK and worldwide.

Developments in technology and other social factors have changed the way we work and the types of work that we do. Leading us to the shape of the industrial landscape today where services are the dominant industries in England and Wales. Technological advances and better transport links also had an impact on the manufacturing industry. In 1841, a third of the working population (36%) worked in manufacturing but this had fallen to just 9% by 2011. However, over time, technological advances have allowed process lines to become more mechanised and require fewer workers to operate them. Heavy industries, producing large volumes of low-value goods, such as steelmaking, have become more efficient and so are able to produce the same amount of output from fewer manufacturing sites employing fewer people. These heavy industries have been
replaced in part by smaller industrial units producing high-value goods, such as the aerospace and electronics industries. Whilst the manufacturing base in Wales has been affected by these historic changes, manufacturing industries in Wales are seeing a renewed optimism with major investment in new technologies being evidenced across Wales. In July 2015 the CBI reported that optimism in small and medium-sized manufacturers had improved in the last quarter and that this was set to continue. At Sigma Recruitment we have seen real evidence of this in the increased number of manufacturing companies now recruiting and the good news for those working within the sector is that there are now excellent job opportunities available in many engineering and technical skill sets. So if you work within the manufacturing sector please do submit your CV to us via our website so that you do not miss out on the exciting opportunities available. If you are an employer in the manufacturing
sector and looking to recruit then contact us today and take advantage of our unique internal database of over 45,000 registered manufacturing personnel looking for their next career move in Wales. A little coordinated effort from you and your vet team can help overcome the vast majority of vet phobias to the benefit of all concerned, especially your pets! It maybe a little more difficult to establish whether or not your veterinary care provider is up to date and progressive, or lolling in the ‘noughties’. Vaccination advice changes quickly in the animal world as well as the human field. Over the past decade, there have been huge advances in veterinary dental care, diagnostic imaging, endoscopy, orthopaedic surgery, physical therapy and the use of therapeutic laser to name a few. Check out the website blog and Facebook page and talk to the reception and nursing team about recent changes and developments.
So what sort of things should you be looking for and what questions should you be asking when you choose the people to help you care for your non-human family members? Convenience of location and ease of car parking are obviously important considerations. For something as important as your pet’s health, however, you really should investigate a little deeper. Word of mouth recommendation is very important, but also look out for testimonials from existing clients on the practice website; even better are comments entered on an independent review website such as www.goodvetguide.co.uk. Thinking about the practice website, please remember to check it out. A website is a great introduction to any vet practice and

Posh Fish and Chips in Llandaff! Faced with the thought of another ready meal from the fridge after another long day at work, myself and my other half decided on venturing out to find some more satisfying fayre! It was clearly evident as we walked through the door that this was no ordinary “fish and chippy” as the smartly dressed uniformed staff attentively looked to ensure that our orders were taken. The fish bar provides a selection of dishes that show a real dedication to providing the very best in fish gourmet dinners and would I am sure match many of Cardiff ’s quality restaurants. With a large seating area (over 35 covers), the choice to eat in or takeaway is available. I was tempted by the smoked cod and spring onion fishcakes served with a home-made tartar sauce, mushy peas and chips. The quality of the food was excellent, the chips obviously made from the fluffiest of potatoes and a cut above your usual local fish and chip shop. But the fishcakes were certainly something special, served piping hot and delicately made, with the spring onion providing a wonderful kick to every mouthful. Looking at the menu the standard of cooking is clear to see with a range of signature dishes.

Looking After Your Pond And Water Garden Ponds are a lovely addition to any garden and can provide a rich habitat for a range of wildlife. However, without care ponds can soon become an eyesore with overgrown plants, weeds and water that is unhealthy for fish and other wildlife. Occasional cleaning and regular maintenance is required to keep your pond healthy.
Pond Cleaning And Maintenance
1
Start by preparing a holding tank in a shady spot for fish and deep water plants; use some pond water in the tank, unless it is particularly cloudy. Marginal (water’s edge) plants will survive out of the pond as long as they are kept moist and shaded
2
The easiest way to drain the pond is to use a pump, which can be rented for the day from a machinery hire shop
3
As the water level falls, remove fish as they become visible
5
If you find any, put larger pond creatures into the holding tanks.
4
Remove plants as the water levels drops, placing them in the holding tank. Take the opportunity to re-pot or divide plants if necessary
