BOATS BY BRAND
SHOP CERTIFIED: WHY BUYING AN NMMA CERTIFIED BOAT MATTERS
Choosing an NMMA Certified boat is key to ensuring you’re buying a safe, reliable boat that you can enjoy for years to come. Learn about the benefits and importance of choosing certified when you’re buying a new boat.
WHAT IS A CERTIFIED BOAT?
Although the U.S. Coast Guard has minimum requirements established for all boats built and sold in the country, these are just bare minimums. NMMA Certification goes beyond those federally regulated requirements to ensure the highest level of boating safety:
• To become certified, manufacturers must pass third-party, hands-on inspections and meet other specific benchmarks.
• NMMA Certification is a voluntary program, so when you’re looking at a certified boat, you know that the manufacturer has decided to go above and beyond the legal bare minimums.
WHAT DOES CERTIFICATION COVER?
If you can stand on a boat and point to it, the inspectors have probably checked it out!
Virtually every system ranging from electrical to steering to plumbing is assessed. And they all must meet the standards set by the American Boat and Yacht Council (ABYC).
HOW TO FIND AND IDENTIFY A CERTIFIED BOAT
How do you know if a boat you’re looking at is certified? Here are a few ways:
1. Look for the NMMA Certified logo: You’ll find it on the boat’s capacity plate (or yacht plate, in the case of larger boats). In addition, you’ll often see it displayed on manufacturers’ websites or printed materials.
2. Check This Boat Show Guide: The Boats by Brand page lists all the boat brands available at the show—certified boat brands are identified with the NMMA Certified logo to make it easy for you to know which boats on display have met certification standards.
3. Use Other Discover Boating Resources: After the show, be sure to check out DiscoverBoating.com. All boats listed in our Boat Finder and all manufacturers featured in our Boat Brands and Manufacturers listings are certified.
THE BENEFITS OF OWNING AN NMMA CERTIFIED BOAT
There are many benefits to owning an NMMA Certified boat, most importantly, the higher bar set for safety. NMMA takes boating safety seriously, and you can rest assured knowing that your certified boat meets our standards.
Other certification advantages include:
• Studies have shown that NMMA Certified boats are seven times less likely to be recalled by the U.S. Coast Guard when compared to uncertified boats.
• Certification goes beyond boats in some cases, extending to trailers, PWC, and even marine oils. When you use certified products, you can have a higher level of confidence in their safety and quality.
• Manufacturers that meet NMMA certification standards always have a point person (or people) who know the standards inside and out. These individuals are experts on safety standards and can spot potential problems before they turn into serious issues.
THE BOTTOM LINE?
An NMMA Certified boat is a safer boat, and that means you can feel confident about your decision when buying one!

Peace of Mind
THE IMPORTANCE OF BOAT INSURANCE
Embarking on the open water is an exhilarating experience, filled with the promise of adventure and relaxation. Whether you’re a seasoned sailor or a weekend cruiser, safeguarding your vessel with proper insurance is not just a choice—it’s a necessity. Explore the reasons why every boat owner should prioritize boat insurance for a worry-free voyage.
UNPREDICTABLE
Waters
The open water can be unpredictable, with unexpected storms, collisions, or other potential accidents. Boat insurance can give you financial protection if there is damage to your vessel, providing coverage for repairs or replacement.
Damage
AND INJURY
Accidents on the water can result in damage to other boats, docks, or even injuries to passengers. Boat insurance offers liability coverage, which can pay for damages or injuries you’re liable for while boating, up to specified limits, and lawsuit costs if you’re sued. This includes damage you cause to another watercraft or if someone on or near your boat is injured and you’re found to be legally responsible.
THEFT AND
Vandalism
Unfortunately, boat theft and vandalism are realities that boat owners face. Boat insurance has comprehensive and collision coverage that can protect you against events outside of your control, including theft and vandalism.
Payments
Accidents on the water may lead to injuries for you or your passengers. Boat insurance offers a range of optional medical payments coverage limits, helping to cover medical expenses if you are in an accident or someone is hurt on your boat, regardless of fault.
PEACE OF MIND FOR
Financing
If you financed the purchase of your boat, most lenders require insurance coverage to protect their investment. Having boat insurance not only fulfills these requirements but also gives you peace of mind knowing that your financial interests are safeguarded.
Flexibility
Some water municipalities and marinas may require proof of insurance for docking or accessing certain areas. Boat insurance allows you the flexibility to explore different destinations without worrying about entry restrictions.
EMERGENCY TOWING AND
Assistance
Progressive boat insurance can include optional Sign & Glide® On-Water Towing coverage. If your boat is disabled or breaks down on the water, Sign & Glide® pays for on-water towing, jump starts, soft un-groundings, and fuel delivery.
WRECKAGE
Removal
If your boat sinks, Progressive boat insurance will cover the cost of removing your boat from the water (if removal is legally required).
Investing in boat insurance is not just about protecting a valuable asset; it’s about safeguarding the memories, experiences, and joy that come with your on-water adventures. Don’t let unforeseen circumstances disrupt your journey—navigate with confidence, knowing that Progressive boat insurance has you covered. Ensure a smooth and worry-free voyage, because when it comes to your boat, peace of mind is the ultimate luxury.
We Share It
In a nutshell, my role at Progressive is to acquire customers for our motorcycle, boat, and RV insurance and protection products. My colleagues and I feel that we have a distinct advantage when designing our products, because as owners ourselves, we understand your unique needs and share your passion for these vehicles.
In my case, this has been a lifelong passion. From a young age, I'd ride on the back of my dad's Suzuki on Saturday mornings as we got out of the house and checked out local garage sales. Over the years, I graduated from a moped to my first grown-up bike: a beautiful blue Suzuki Katana.
After getting married and starting a family, my priorities changed, but I never lost my passion for motorcycles. I inherited a 2000 Harley FXDX after my father hung up his helmet, and I'm beginning to create those weekend memories with my own children, who don helmets and long pants for a chance to take short, low-speed rides on the back of "dad's motorcycle."
My most recent source of adventure if a Polaris RZR side-by-side that I got last fall. It's a four-seater, which means my wife and two kids can come along, and we take it trail riding in the beautiful mountains of Pennsylvania and West Virginia. I think of it as part market research for my day job and part family getaway. It's a great excuse for my family to trade in our iPads, video games, and other distractions for lunch on the trails. We already have many years' worth of stories to laugh about around the dinner table. (Yes, Kevin, I'm talking about that "shortcut" you suggested.)
I'd be remiss if I didn't also mention watercraft and RVs, which, of course Progressive also insures. After selling the Katana, we gave boating a try with a Sea Ray cabin cruiser and a pair of WaveRunners. In fact, I can honestly say that I either own or have owned every major type of vehicle we insure at Progressive, with the exception of an RV, though we often go camping with my in-laws in their Forest River Mini Lite.
Needless to say, I insure all of my vehicles with Progressive. The reason is obvious; I know Progressive is just as passionate about these vehicles as I am, so I know our polices are exactly what people like us need.
Being properly insured is important, not only for the vehicle, but to protect against liability and the unknown. I want to protect my family and our financial stability, as well as cover potential medical costs and vehicle repairs. My whole family enjoys getting away from the day-to-day with these toys, and knowing we're insured when we go out gives us all the peace of mind we need to make those memories even more special.
