Fieldwork: Doing Anthropology Around the World

Page 21

BUTONESE WOMAN GATHERING SEA URCHINS I conducted ethnographic field work in the Bajo (sea gypsy) fishing village of Wuring Laut which is located in Flores Island, eastern Indonesia. My field work included in-depth interviews, focus group interviews and informal observations and was conducted over 12 months spent living in the village and participating in local life. The aims of the research were to conduct a critical enquiry into fishing livelihoods and factors contributing to vulnerability to poverty and food insecurity; and to explore ways of improving existing circumstances and encouraging economic diversity.
