A destination

WORTH DISCOVERING! Located at the mouth of the Gulf of Saint Lawrence, only 12 miles from Newfoundland, the archipelago consists of several islands: Saint-Pierre (population: 5,500), Miquelon-Langlade (population: 600), as well as Île aux Marins and several small uninhabited islands.

"A perfect blend between culture and nature, Saint-Pierreet-Miquelon will charm you with its tranquility, traditions, and way of life ". V I S I T O R G U I D E SA INT-PIE RRE -E T-MIQUE L ON

The town of Saint-Pierre is developed around a cove protected by several islands. As early as the 16th century, this natural harbor attracted large fishing and trading vessels, as well as most of the new arrivals. Ten minutes away by boat, Île aux Marins is an excursion not to be missed. This small island bears witness to Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon's fishing history. Since the 19th century, Miquelon has been the centre of agricultural activities on the archipelago. The island is home to produce and livestock farms and is also a hot spot for coastal fishing. Coquille Saint-Jacques (scallops), lobster, goose and duck foie gras, and a craft brewery are just some of the delicious specialties you will find here! Langlade, connected to Miquelon by a sandy isthmus called La Dune, is a summer getaway for residents of the archipelago. Bustling in the summer and quiet in the winter, this island is where locals like to gather to enjoy the warmer season. Travelling to Saint-Pierre et Miquelon means discovering its people, traditions and way of life, and untouched natural beauty

BIODIVERSITY WA I T I N G T O B E E X P L O RE D. . .

- it's a trip that will change you. Locals are proud to represent the only piece of France in North America, while also leaning into several Canadian influences... it's a beautiful mix of cultures to explore. Come see for yourself! We invite you to visit our home.

A B I T O F H I S T O RY . . . With their varied landscapes – sea and lagoons, moorland and forests, sand and rock – our islands are a rich source of biodiversity. Over 300 species of birds, both resident and migratory, traverse the skies of the archipelago. In the water, whales roam between the islands while seals bask along the shore. The land boasts a rich diversity of terrain that is home to a wide variety of flora.

Long before the arrival of Europeans, the islands of the SaintPierre-et-Miquelon archipelago were inhabited by indigenous groups who had occupied the region since 3000 BC. These groups were gradually driven out by the europeans, starting in the 15th century. Before any official exploration, fishermen from Brittany and Normandy established seasonal settlements in Saint-Pierre. In 1604, the first permanent settlements were established. During the same period, Basque whalers also came to hunt around Newfoundland. On October 21, 1520, Portuguese explorer João Alvares Fagundes, having sailed along the coast of Nova Scotia, the Gulf of St. Lawrence and the southern coast of Newfoundland, officially discovered the Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon archipelago, which he named the “Island of the Eleven Thousand Virgins” in memory of a legend about St. Ursula and her companions. Portuguese ownership of these islands was short-lived and, by 1530, the original name had fallen out of use and the name “Saint-Pierre Islands” appeared on nautical charts.

For foodies: the charming tea rooms of Saint-Pierre are the place to go for an artisanal ice-cream and homemade pastries. Love to shop? Go for a stroll along our streets to check out the many boutiques… You will feel like you have left North America and arrived in mainland France. To finish the day, experience life with the locals by heading to "Saline" #20 where you’ll find the Zigotos.

Every year in June, we celebrate Sailors’ Day, a commemoration in honor of our lost seamen; the tradition is deeply rooted within our local culture. The cathedral is adorned with ships’ flags and pennants while mass is held. After worship, a traditional brioche is shared among the congregation as a symbol of solidarity. The procession then moves to the harbor for a blessing of the vessels.

This 100% Basque sports and cultural event is held every year in August and lasts a whole week featuring traditional Basque pelota games (pala, joko-garbi, barehanded) with teams playing every night, dance demonstrations by the Orok Bat group, traditional music with bands and choir, Basque games of strength and of course Basque food. Come discover our identity and learn about our Basque roots!
