spherical, and about the size of a football. It somehow led her down the stairs, drawing her down against her will. Al­ though self-aware, Maria felt that she had no control over the situation; no option but to obey. Once at the bottom of the stairs, by the locked front door, Maria received another command. She was to bend down, and pick the object up. She fought this compulsion, angry at being co­ erced in this way, and willed herself not to pick it up. She was still thinking of Andras, and used this thought to try and somehow escape the control she was under, by con­ centrating on something different. At this point an event occurred that seems to me to illustrate the intelligence, and perhaps the humor, of the forces at work. She glanced downward, and saw not the ball of light, but sev­ eral bottles of milk. She was struck by a sudden thought that this was safe, and nothing to worry about, so she picked them up, only to find that she had picked up the ball of light. A surge of anger ran through her as she realized she had been tricked; but by then, it was too late. The next part of the experience is one of the most bizarre events that I have come across, and one of the most fascinating. Maria was somehow led, by the ball of light, through the physical structure of the front door itself. She describes the process as being like "moving through molasses," and recalls that she was aware of the internal structure of the wood, complete with splinters, gaps and knots. This was a very slow operation, but once through the door, she was pulled upward quite quickly. As she went up, she was aware of the trees below her, and al­ though she has never particularly liked heights, she knew she wouldn't fall. She felt "lost," not afraid. Her eye was
