Mad Men Season 6 Focuses More on Women By Alessandra Stanley

There’s been an amazing amount of soap opera in “Mad Men” — affairs, abortions, divorces, suicide, heroin addiction, even a Hare Krishna conversion — but the series has not yet become laughable, mostly .because it has never lost its dark sense of humor But the women of the show, more than the men, are the ones who defy expectations and break ground. The show about so-called mad men was always a paean to the sane women who serve them. As the series prepares to shut down, the men seem spent and preoccupied by death; it’s the women who keep us wanting just a little bit more. Time is on their side, and so are the writers. Peggy (Elisabeth Moss) and Joan (Christina Hendricks) began as secretaries and fought their way out of the steno pool and into careers of their own, a step ahead of the mainstream women’s .movement. And here, at least, there is no backlash On “Mad Men” it’s been the stay-at-home mothers who seem distracted and neglectful, while the working mothers like Joan, handing off her baby to her mother to race out the door and back to the office, seem nurturing. Peggy, who put her unwanted infant up for adoption in the first season, isn’t very maternal with her subordinates, .but she does seem happily married to her work It’s Betty (January Jones), raising her three children with a loving new husband, who appears childless — barren in feeling if not in fact. When Megan (Jessica Paré) filled in as a baby sitter, she was more loving to Betty’s children than Betty, though she lost a little of her “Sound of Music” sweetness once she became their stepmother None of these imperfect mothers are as repellent as Pauline (Pamela Dunlap), Betty’s mother-in-law. In the premiere Pauline has a chance to display her special, incongruous blend of neurotic neediness and deadpan cruelty. ,Particularly when measured against all these unusual

undefinable women, the men of “Mad Men” conform to type — and the biases of the era. Brits are polite and unknowable; WASPs are snobs and heavy drinkers; Jews are smart, brash and pushy; and blacks barely visible. Don has fewer ethnic tells than most because his whole persona is an invention. In the season premiere a young man in a bar can’t peg this stranger who is handsome and dapper but ”?square, not hip. He asks Don, “You some kind of astronaut Identity isn’t just a theme of “Mad Men,” it’s one\ of the series’s recurring jokes. We know who Don is by now, and where he is most likely headed. It’s the women in his life who keep us guessing .

D Diana Hovhannisyan, or Dina, as she prefers to be called, this morning as well is awakened by her dog, Chanel, in her house in Ajapnyak, Yerevan. Usually, the crazy schedule would find Dina since the early morning. She would dress up, put her accessories on, make her hair and run off to yet another press conference. BUt this morning was different: it's her day off , so she remembers to have .her coffee and breakfast together with her parents It's been a big year for Dina: first, she was acknowledge as the Most Outstanding Student of the YSU. Already being a reporter at the prestigious ElBaby magazine and MediaMax Media Company, Diana was chosen to be .the PR manager of Dorians for their trip to Eurovision We think that Dina, at only 21, is a role model for young girls accross Armenia. In the interview she tells Genteel all about her success story and how she handles the 5 men of Dorians Genteel: Dina, dear, thank you tons for agreeing to !host us on your day-off Diana Hovhannisyan: Thank you! I am really excited .to have you here GT: Alright, let's start with your job, and get it out of the way. How did it happen that, in just 21, you were ?chosen as the PR manager of Dorians DH: It was quite unexpected, really. I have been writing for bravo.am for over a year now, and their !bosses were the ones handling the whole trip. They

were looking for someone with journalism knowledge and fluent English. And here comes me! It's a music industry, a completely different world for me. Plus,I have never done anything PR related. But I thought, ?why not give it a shot GT: Let's talk about the band for a minute. Dorians - a ?band consisting of 5 men. How do you handle all that DH: Well when I first got involved in this job, I thought it’s going to be really hard to handle 5 men. But soon I found out that it isn’t hard at all. Of course all of them are very different; all of them have their own personality and ambitions, but I manage to have pretty good relations with all of the guys. Believe me, there aren’t any obstacles. Or, wait, there is one! Some of the guys wake up late, and when I call them in the morning, they don’t pick up the phone! This drives me

.absolutely CRAZY GT: I presume friendships are created in the working process. How is your relationship with Gor, the lead ?vocal of Dorians DH: Right now, I can't say that Gor and I are friends. I mean we don't just hang out. Every minute of our time together is spent on working. But I can say that we are in pretty good relations: we have even developed some inside jokes, which makes me happy. It means .that we both are comfortable working with each other GT: Now, when you are dealing with PR, what do you ?think is missing in that industry in Armenia DH: There is one major problem: big companies, artists, bands don't find it necessary to have a PR manager dealing with their figure. I think it is essential for them to understand that maintaning correct

public appearance is important for the success of any company or public figure. And this is a job for .specialists GT: How important is it to follow fashion trends in the ?job that you are doing DH: I hear some journalists and PR people say: “We can’t be fashionable, we have a busy schedule”. I call BS on this. People in these two industries have to be extra fashionable, because they meet new people all the time and they have to leave an extra impression on them. And by saying fashionable I don’t mean wearing high heels and uncomfortable but amazing dresses: fashionable doesn't mean uncomfortable. One can, for example, wear flats, throw on some jeans and a shirt, put some trendy shades and trendy jewelry and still be .fashionable

DH: I am actually happy to see that the industry develop with such a speed! I mean both Armenian designers and the youth. They do follow the latest trends and it is pleasing to see that they develop their .own style and taste in clothes GT: A lot of young women in Armenia tend to follow a certain scenario of their lives: graduate highschool, uni and get married. In your opinion, how important ?is it for women to have their own career DH: You’re so right! That scenario makes me so sad. I mean, you can always get married and have kids, you don’t have to do it when you’re like 18 or 19. In my opinion career is really important for a woman, as it makes her strong and independent. And yes, why not, I’m career-driven. I don’t just dream, I make goals and try my best to achieve them. I think this should be encouraged in today's youth: in the 21st century a woman cannot afford depending on her man, or on anyone else in that regard. Besides, early weds miss out on all the fun stuff: and career .achievements is one of the major things ?GT: Is there a special someone in your life already Channel, 2 years old DH: Unfortunately or fortunately I’m still single. Jumper: DoggyStyle When people ask me why, I always answer that I don’t have time for my love life, but I’m so sure that GT: So, what's your day like? I mean, with such when I find that special someone I’ll always find time a crazy schedule, working with ElBaby, bravo.am .to spend with him and Dorians, how do you manage to have time for GT: You are 21, gorgeous, fashionable and ?yourself, and look so marvelous successful: I am sure a lot of young women reading DH: Do I really? (smiling) Welll, my schedule is pretty this would love to take a piece of advice on the crazy: I have interviews constantly and I also have to .secret of your success be present at any press conferences that Dorians are DH: First of all thank you so much for your kind having. I sometimes forget about the breakfast, lunch words! I really appreciate it! I think that the secret or dinner. But you know, I feel like the more things I of my success comes from the movie “The pursuit have to do, the more time I end up having. Besides, of happiness”. Remember when the kid’s dad in when you do what you love ,you tend to sacrifice the movie tells him "Hey. Don't ever let somebody .many things for it tell you... You can't do something. Not even me, GT: Looking at you, I see you keep yourself in shape! all right?”. This phrase helps me a lot in my daily ?How important is sports/healthy lifestyle for you life. When people thinks I’m not strong enough for DH: Well, healthy lifestyle is really important for me. I something, I try my best to prove them wrong. And it don’t smoke or drink /sometimes I drink but a little/. I actually works out very well each time. I don’t drive, and this is why I’m always on foot running .can say, it's a great ,motivation from here to there. And about sports, I adore sports, GT: Ok, Dina, we will let you enjoy the rest of your but I don’t have much time to do sports. During the day-off with Chanel. Thank you so much for having holidays though I ski, swim, horseride and play tennis. !us !I wish I had time to go to gym though DH: The pleasure was all mine! Thank you, this was GT: What do you think about the fashion industry in .fun GT: Alright, enough about the work! I see your trendy .friend is also here. Tell me some more about Chanel DH: When I first met her, she was 4 months old back then and she was partly black she later changed her color, believe me it seemed like she was wearing the little black dress by Chanel. This is why I decided to .name her Chanel My doggy is my best friend. When I’m upset about something only she can make me happy. As we never leave Chanel home alone, sometimes I even take her to work with me, this happens when my parents are !also out. My co-workers adore her
