Hutong Opens In Dubai

The contemporary Northern Chinese restaurant and bar Hutong is now open on the ground floor of Gate Building 6, DIFC, Dubai. With award-winning locations in London, New York, Miami, and in its home Hong Kong, Hutong brings a fresh take on Chinese cuisine with its occasionally fiery Northern Chinese dishes, dim sum and beverages. The new restaurant features a bespoke interior design inspired by the heritage of the Silk Road where Arabic and Chinese influences merge. Born in Hong Kong in 2003, Hutong restaurant quickly became much loved for its contemporary and occasionally fiery Northern Chinese cuisine as well as its stunning views of the Hong Kong skyline. The restaurant received many awards including the first Michelin star awarded to a Chinese restaurant in the city. Today there are five Hutongs in the family - London, which opened in 2008 in The Shard, Europe’s tallest building; New York and Miami opened in 2019 and most recently Dubai. Hutong’s Dubai menu incorporates signature dishes from London and New York as well as new dishes created exclusively for the Dubai restaurant. The signature Red Lantern is served to the table in a traditional Chinese wood basket overflowing with red Sichuan dried chilies. Crispy pieces of soft-shell crab nestle between them, infused with spices and lip-numbing chili essence. Hutong’s Roasted Peking Duck with Pancakes is delicately carved at the table. The whole duck is carefully prepared for 24 hours using a traditional recipe said to have been developed over one hundred years ago for the Emperor, making the duck skin crispy on the outside while the meat remains moist, tender and flavourful. Hutong’s dim sum, is also main feature, with the famous Dim Sum Platter served at lunch and at dinner. 10 | Dining and Nightlife Middle East

Amongst the dishes specially created for the Dubai restaurant is Suen Cai Yu - a Seabass and pickled cabbage crispy dumpling. For dessert, a playful take on the traditional Chinese favourite, Bao and Soy Milk - a white chocolate covered, sesame and caramel mousse resembles a “bao” and is served on top of a praline sesame crunch. Sprinkled with lime zest to resemble scallions, the “bao” is complemented by a perfect scoop of house-made soy milk ice cream served in a marble and glass “cone.” Hutong takes its name from the narrow streets and back alleys of old Beijing (Peking as it was called then). The hutongs were bustling with all forms of the city’s life. Peking sat at the end of the famous Silk Road along which in the Qing Dynasty a rich variety of produce and goods travelled between China and the Middle East and Europe. The design inspiration of Hutong in Dubai is drawn from the part of the Silk Road around Xinjiang in the west of China and Kyrgyzstan, meeting point and a melting pot for Arabic and Chinese cultures. The design, conceptualised by David Yeo and brought to life by London based Fabled Studio, brings together strong Arabic elements with Chinese elements. Dubai residents will feel at home in the room but will be surprised by some of the unusual Chinese features. The restaurant is situated on the ground floor of Gate Building 6 in DIFC with majestic towering ceilings and a mezzanine. There are 88 seats in the main dining area, a distinct bar with 9 seats and 2 private dining rooms with a total of 24 seats. Outside is an expansive and discrete terrace. Tropical Vibes At Amazonico

18 | Dining and Nightlife Middle East

Taking up three levels in the posh DIFC Pavilion, Amazonico makes a splash before we even enter the building. From its exterior, the three-level location practically glows with various shades of green. Similar to the original venue in Spain, there’s lush planting, and the atmospheric lighting beckons us closer. We enter on the ground floor, which is home to a sumptuous lounge, and the restaurant’s sushi counter. With a brightly lit bar, high ceilings, and luxe seating, this level looks like the perfect place to start or end the evening. As our reservation is in the main dining room, we follow the hostess up the winding staircase and into the main dining area. We walk up (and up) the stairs and into the expansive room, which immediately feels a bit like stepping into the rainforest. There’s a fancy lift (have your mobile phone ready for a fun selfie), for those in heels, or for guests with any mobility issues. With views of Emirates Towers, in the cooler months, the outdoor section would be the best bet for seating. Be advised that the tables are quite close together, so, who knows, you might overhear an interesting conversation. Once seated, we also note the additional attention

to detail at the table - including romantic candlelight, and playful plating. I have a tree frog, while my dining partner’s plate is emblazoned with a jaguar. After our waiter walks us through the extensive menu, highlighting some of the signature dishes, we settle to make our decisions. The menu itself is broken down into a variety of sections, including salad and vegetables, raw and marinated plates, Amizonico ‘bites,’ wok dishes, fish, charcoal meats, and sides. With a play of Latin and Asian flavours, there are some unique dishes to try. We begin with smaller plates, including Guacamole con Erizo. We ordered this mainly because we’ve always wanted to know how avocado and uni would taste together. While the avocado shines, we wish there was a bit more uni flavour to enjoy. Served with a green plantain crisp, the dish is also slightly difficult to eat. Also, while there are frog legs on the menu (!), we bypass these and instead order Aquachile, which is our favourite dish of the night and definitely one to order. The base of red snapper in this February | 19

ceviche is inspired, and the blend of citrus and spice is nearly perfect. My dining partner has his eye on the Patacones Mechados, which arrives in a set of six small bites, set on crispy plantain. While the presentation could probably use a bit of attention, and we would like a bit more texture, overall, it’s an easy dish to split. We round out the starters with Atun Okinamasucon Caviar. Toro Tuna is another favourite of ours, and we’re a bit shocked to see it diced so finely. Perhaps this is a homage to a Latin dish we’re unaware of, but we prefer a bit of a rougher chop on this gorgeous protein. Tempted by the sushi offerings, we decide to try the Lomi-Lomi roll, which is a straightforward dish, with king salmon, avocado, and coriander. Fortunately, we’re won back over by the Entrana Marinda. While we don’t see (or taste) much of the chimichurri, the flank steak (such an overlooked cut), is cooked to perfection. Served on a unique flat pan, the dusting of salt on the side is all that’s needed for seasoning. For our side dishes, we ordered Coliflor and the Papas Cordillera. The roasted cauliflower is a bit moister than our usual preference, but we do enjoy the inclusion of black garlic cream and cashew nuts. The fried Peruvian potato adds a nice bit of starch, although we would prefer the accompanying rocoto sauce to be served warmer, rather than at room temperature. Overall, we’d also love to see a bit more on the menu for vegetarian diners.

Given the amount of food we consumed, we give a pass to dessert. We also quickly peek at the vibrant atmosphere of the Copacabana inspired rooftop, which is also home to a one of a kind private dining space. We see this location as the perfect spot for a date night or after work drinks. Would we go back to Amazonico? We’re definitely up for a drink in the lounge or taking advantage of the rooftop views. Service is highly attentive and knowledgeable. Azura Panoramic Dining

22 | Dining and Nightlife Middle East

Today we are visiting The St. Regis Abu Dhabi to try the revamped menu at Azura Panoramic Lounge. For those that have not previously visited, Azura is spread across three unique levels, the top level being for dining whist the other levels lend themselves more to drinks and light bites. We make our way up to the top level. The décor is light with natural tones and plush comfortable seating. The views are spectacular and as the name suggests Azura truly does offer panoramic dining with sweeping Corniche views all to the backdrop of the Arabian Gulf. It is somewhat fresh this evening and the team do offer us blankets and a heater, although the breeze coming off the ocean its quite refreshing after a day in the office. Some may remember the previous menu which offered a tapas style of dining, that has now been replaced with the new revamped menu that focus more on hearty Mediterranean dishes. The menu is easy to navigate and is split into appetizers, soups, mains, sides, Azura signature table grills and desserts. We do debate ordering Azura signature table grill, made to be shared by two guests the table grill offers a choice of seafood grill AED 500 or meat grill AED 400 and comes with

mixed salad, steamed rice and steak fries. Eventually we decide against it, mainly because I would prefer the seafood and my dining companion would rather the meat, so unable to agree we opt to select our own dishes. Wanting something light and warm on this cool evening I start with Lentil Soup. My dining companion opts for the Grilled King Crab Legs served in a mouth-watering herb butter. Seeing the portion size of the crab legs I offer my assistance. Chef has done well to add just the right amount of seasoning to the crab legs, allowing us to also enjoy the rich seafood flavours without overpowering the crab. The Lentil Soup is not the usual yellow style we have come accustom to in the UAE but instead chef has opted for brown lentils with thick vegetables. We have a choice of six main dishes to choose from, my dining companion selects the chef’s choice of Short Rib Burger – slow cooked USDA short rib on the bone, taleggio cheese, fresh basil, chipotle sauce with duck fat potato fries. I opt for the Black Cod with Miso – soy, pickled ginger, bok choy and Asian dressing. February | 23

The mains are served piping hot and nicely presented. The Black Cod is perfectly cooked and glides off the fork, to the taste the light miso undertones are evident. The USDA short rib is a great protein, although we would prefer the rib to be served pulled, as it is slightly difficult to eat and the overwhelming taste of the ribs (as good as they are) do distract from the other flavours. We cannot deny that Azura offers exceptional value for money, remember we are dining at a St. Regis, the portion sizes are extremely generous, and prices are in line with most fine dining restaurants in the city. That said had we known in advance the portion size we may not have ordered the sides, Steak Fries and Steamed Broccoli with Almonds. Wanting to end on a sweet note we opt to share the Blueberry Crème Brulee, the contrast of sweet and slight acidity of the blueberries makes for a fine finish to our dining experience. Personally, we enjoyed our time at Azura. I would have liked to have seen a few more vegetarian options on the menu and a few 24 | Dining and Nightlife Middle East

lighter dishes, that said if you like seafood or meat the menu will cater well to your requirements. Azura is a stunning venue and its views are unrivalled, service is, as one would except from a St. Regis impeccable, this is an ideal venue for a group of friends looking for a relaxing ambiance to catch up over a nice meal. A Muscat Must, Siddharta Lounge By Buddha-Bar

26 | Dining and Nightlife Middle East

Located on the 6th floor of the gloriously modern W Muscat is the stylish Siddharta Lounge by Buddha Bar, which is the perfect place to spend a relaxed and sophisticated evening in the capital city of Oman. Situated on the rooftop, overlooking the stunning coastline of Shatti Al Qurum, holiday mode is maximized within minutes among the laid back atmosphere of the venue. Access to the restaurant is via the first floor of the hotel, where our reservation is confirmed, and we’re whisked up on a private lift to the restaurant. Once inside, there are plenty of delightful and whimsical touches in the design of the venue. We especially like the lace-edged cabanas, water features, unique seating arrangements, and the modern Moroccan touches. Of course, the most Instagrammable element is the infinity-edge pool, which surrounds a sunken bar.

creative. The options for food are broken down to maximize sharing with friends and family. There is a selection of tapas, a raw bar, salads, sushi and sashimi (and yes, that includes the Siddharta Lounge sushi burger), and main courses, which lean heavily towards seafood (which makes sense, given the location).

To start, we order the Crispy Octopus, served with edamame beans, crispy rice crackers, and truffle mayonnaise. The portion is generous, but perhaps we would have preferred a crispier texture, however the octopus is cooked well, and the rice crackers are a delicious addition. From the raw bar, we order the Scallops Carpaccio, which are served with lime, fennel shavings, and hazelnuts. The presentation, in charming little shells on blue sand (!), is unique, but we think the knife work on the protein could be a bit more cohesive, as the scallops are somewhat awkward to eat. After being shown to our seats, we discover the menu is To round out the first course, we decide on a sushi roll and split straightforward, with plenty of international favourites for every palate. Officially focusing on ‘a selection of coastal Mediterranean the Crunchy Shrimp Volcano. The rolls are sliced thin and topped cuisine dishes and delicious bites, as well as Asian favourites,’ we with shrimp. It’s a dish we would order again. see plenty we want to try. For our mains, we choose the Tiger Prawns a la Plancha, and as a side, how could we say no to Parmesan Truffle Fries. The prawns are the absolute star of the evening, and although served in an odd number - difficult to share evenly - the cook was absolute perfection. Served with Sicilian dressing and vegetable ratatouille, we think the dish might have better accompaniments but are willing to overlook these as the prawns are tender and delicious. The fries are almost done in a tempura-style, with subtle flavouring. Given the amount of food we share, my dining partner and I decide to overlook dessert but see a few tempting options to try for our next visit.

Would we go back? Absolutely! With warm hospitality, stunning views throughout the day (and night), and an excellent menu, Siddharta Lounge is one to add to any visit to Muscat. Whether or not you’re staying at the W Muscat, make a reservation at this stunning venue and aim to go around sunset to get the most out of the experience. Crispy Octopus, OMR 12 Scallops Carpaccio, OMR 9 Crunchy Shrimp Volcano, OMR 9 Tiger Prawns, OMR 18 Parmesan Truffle Fries, OMR 3

Given the relaxed destination and overall vibe, we like restaurants where there is no wrong way to approach the menu, and Siddharta Siddharta Lounge by Buddha-Bar, W Muscat, Oman, Lounge by Buddha Bar delivers on this expectation. Also, it would +968 22 120 000 be rude not to mention the music, a laid back soundtrack which By Courtney Brandt adds to the overall atmosphere. The Grill

February | 37

We have been invited to Marriott Hotel Al Forsan to try the revamped menu at The Grill. Upon our arrival we are warmly welcomed by the team and offered a seat in one of the semi-private booths. The interiors at The Grill are more casual in comparison to other steakhouses in Abu Dhabi, meaning that you wouldn’t feel out of place bringing your young family to The Grill as you would other steakhouses in the city.

For mains I opt for the Grilled Salmon with a side of Paris Mash and my dining companion selects the USDA Tenderloin 220g with Homemade BBQ Sauce and a side of Chip Shop Chips. I did have some questions in regards to the Paris Mash, which apparently is made with a heavy amount of dairy. Not being the biggest dairy fan, I ask the team if they can alter the recipe, after a brief conversation with chef, he adapts the mash to my liking. The Grilled Salmon is perfectly cooked and served with a slice of The menu at The Grill is displayed on one page and offers a range grilled lemon and long stem broccoli. Meat eaters will appreciate the Tenderloin 220g is cooked well done, as requested, and the Chip range of cuts from USA, Australian to Argentinian. The Best Of The Mediterranean At Olival Eatery & Bar

The sun is shining, a cool breeze is blowing, the creek is running, and birds are tweeting, no, sadly we are not on a Mediterranean vacation, but we think we may have found the next best thing. Nestled amongst the lush foliage of Habtoor Grand Resort guests will find Olival Eatery and Bar, offering sumptuous Mediterranean fare, set in what can only be described as one of the most relaxing settings in Dubai.

For mains I debate between the Mixed Seafood Grill which comes with prawns, calamari, scallops, octopus, fish and grilled baby vegetables and the Organic Salmon, a pan seared salmon with basque condiments, beef chorizo and rocca cream sauce. Having already enjoyed an excellent octopus starter I opt to try the Organic Salmon, the fact that Olival is serving an Organic Salmon is a big plus. My dining companion opts for the Welsh Lamb Chops cooked in ghee lamb cutlet and served with a creamy polenta and tomato ragout. I am thrilled to see Welsh Lamb on the menu, it’s such a great protein. Both dishes arrive piping hot and immaculately presented. Notably both portions are extremely generous. The salmon effortlessly flakes off the fork, the basque condiments are the perfect accompaniment and the rocca cream sauce adds a diversity in the dishes texture, overall, I would reorder this dish without hesitation. The Welsh Lamb Chops are being enjoyed by my dining companion, who compliments chef on the unique merging of flavours. Although we did order a side of Roasted Mashed Potatoes and Fries, we could have probably done without them.

Given the mains portion size and having had a starter we leave little room for dessert and even though we do try to convince ourselves otherwise we soon realise that we are unable to eat another bite. However, on our next visit we do look forward to trying the Duo Lemon Pie. The menu offers a range of tasty dishes and guests are spoilt for choice. We would highly recommend leaning towards the seafood dishes as this is Olival’s speciality, especially the fresh seafood display. Brunch Bliss At Jumeirah At Saadiyat Island Resort

44 | Dining and Nightlife Middle East

It’s a beautiful sunny Friday afternoon as we make our way to the tranquil Jumeirah at Saadiyat Island Resort. Located on the shores of one of the best beaches in the world, Saadiyat Island Abu Dhabi. It should come as no surprise that Jumeirah at Saadiyat Island Resort has quickly affirmed itself as one of the most picturesque destinations in the United Arab Emirates.

We begin with the fresh seafood, a few shucked Oysters, Lobster Tail, Crab and Mussels. The Oysters are extremely fresh and tasty, we refrain from having a second portion as we are conscious to pace ourselves. Next, we sample the Smoked Salmon, which comes in a variety of infusions alongside the Salmon Nigri and Avocado Maki.

Today we are visiting White restaurant which plays host to the monthly brunch series. Every month Jumeirah at Saadiyat Island Resort hosts one brunch, the theme changes monthly ensuring guests can always experience something new upon each visit, the theme today is countryside and has a wild west American theme, fully equipped with games and a rodeo bull.

Since our last visit we have noticed a welcome addition of more vegetarian and vegan options such as the Mapo Tofu a Chinese style stir fry and the Vegan Sushi Rolls, both are delicious.

Wanting to move onto something warm for mains I head over to the seafood grill station and select the Grilled Lobster Tail and Spiced Sweet Potatoes. Passing the Tandoori station, I cannot We take a seat outside so we can enjoy the live duo. been nothing short of fantastic. We take a break and enjoy watching as guests try their hand on the rodeo bull ride, needless to say we don’t quite muster up the courage to try it ourselves, although it does look like good fun. The atmosphere at the brunch is relaxed yet entertaining with the duo playing a host of modern and classic tunes.

We would most definitely look to return again and the fact that the brunch theme changes monthly is a big plus. The next brunch will take place Friday 21st February 2020. A Carnival atmosphere with festive flavours forms the theme for this February’s brunch, inspired by a carnival fiesta. It promises to be an enchanting gastronomic explosion of flavours, sensations, live performance and Carnival masks. Lights, Camera, Action At Pacific Groove

48 | Dining and Nightlife Middle East

The recently launched Paramount Hotel has a unique approach to their hospitality, and that strategy also includes its Californian themed dining outlet, Pacific Groove. From the website, the venue is “inspired by coastal road trips, fresh salty air, and honest ingredients. Pacific Groove transports guests from Dubai straight to the sunny shores of Santa Monica.” A tall order, perhaps, but we keep an open mind as we make our way to the first floor. With an open, modern layout, guests can stop first for a drink at the bar or proceed directly into one of the cosy dining rooms to enjoy their meal. Upon arrival, we appreciate the natural elements, contemporary design, open floor plan, and atmospheric lighting that Pacific Groove offers.

plenty of wagyu offered in town, the simple approach and generous portion of the Wagyu tataki, allows the flavours of the protein to shine. We could easily see this dish being split among a larger group.

Similarly, the Ahi Tuna Crudo, is also a hit and the most beautifully presented dish of the evening. For vegetarians, the Compress Watermelon is a refreshing treat, served up with goat cheese, aged balsamic vinegar, and raspberry - it’s a fresh dish we would order again, even if we think the pricing is a touch high. Offering some original recipes, Pacific Groove wows us with King Crab Cake, as well as Lightly Smoked Beetroot Salmon. The petite crab cakes pack a lot of flavour, and we like the slight sourness of the accompanying pomelo salad. Similarly, the salmon has just The menu offers exclusively Californian cuisine, and we think it’s enough of smokiness and beetroot not to overpower the fish. As a well-executed idea. Jumping straight into what’s available, with everything we’ve ordered so far - we would happily have each we order a selection of starters (mainly because they all look fantastic). We start with a simple, but delicious, ceviche, the Pacific, dish again. featuring fresh sea bass, sweet potato, red onion, and tiger’s milk. Although we choose the option with fish, we’re also delighted to see vegetarian ceviches on the menu. Next up, while there is February | 49

Could a trip to California even be complete without sushi? Pacific Groove does things their own way with the ‘Ink’ roll, which utilizes squid ink to create black sushi rice. The portion, like many of the dishes, is also generous. We would definitely be curious to see what other sushi dishes are available on another trip. One of the most outstanding dishes of the dinner is one of our main courses, the 18 Hour Wagyu Short Ribs, which literally falls off the bone. Served with potato puree and kale gravy, these are an absolute highlight, and probably our favourite dish of the evening. While we like the cook on the Wood-Grilled Octopus, our other main course, we would change the presentation, which is a bit cluttered with the smoked corn puree and potato chips. Desserts bring a mix of decisions, and while we like the Walk in the Woods, with its raspberry crumble, blueberry namelaka, blackberry sorbet, and the Absolute Chocolate, which includes a mix of chocolate including dark crumble, milk namelaka, bitter caramel, and chocolate ice cream, it’s the lighter My Lemon Pie which is our favourite. Although all of the desserts are worth ordering (and sharing), the meringue, citrus crumble, and yuzu all add up to an outstanding sweet treat.

many a Dubai institution, service is friendly and attentive. If you have a moment to speak with the chef or his team, it’s well worth a chat. Would we return to Pacific Groove? Happily! If in the mood for well done Californian cuisine which lets the food shine, then we would need to look no further. Seeing their Friday Cine-Matic brunch offer, we might have an excellent excuse to return. Lum’a Spa is located at the beautiful Grand Hyatt Abu Dhabi Hotel and Residences Emirates Pearl, on the West side of Abu Dhabi’s popular Corniche. Lum’a Spa offers ‘a traditional, powerful and luxurious selection of spa experiences, using the finest quality products rooted in science to defy aging and restore energy’. We enter the hotel and take the lift to the spa. Lum’a Spa is located a short walk away from the wellness and gym area of the hotel. Once entering the spa, we are warmly greeted by the team. Lum’a Spa boasts 11 treatment rooms alongside relaxation and consultation rooms. Highlights of the facilities include the sauna and steam rooms, ice fountains and a popular Hammam. The bespoke menu features treatments ranging from HydroPeptide facials, relaxing massages, invigorating body scrubs to tranquil journeys. For today’s visit I have selected the 60 minute Traditional Thai Massage treatment, which is designed to expose exceptional flexibility and mobility and relieve muscle and joint tensions through stretching, compressions and yoga techniques ensuring it reawakens a guest’s life force and flexibility. My companion decides to try the 60 minute Luma Five Element Aroma Massage treatment. This treatment includes a powerful aromatherapy massage inspired by both Eastern and Western massage techniques to stimulate circulation and release an exhilarating sense of balance and renewed energy. The five elements are related to, wood, to revitalize and renew, fire, for vitality and energy, earth, for equilibrium and clarity, metal, to purify and refine and water, to relax and calm.

For the Thai Massage I am provided with loose fitting pyjamas. Initially, I must admit, I am slightly concerned as I highly doubt I will be able to comfortably perform the Thai Massage. A few flashbacks to a holiday in Thailand, where I had previously attempted the treatment had resulted in me being left in more muscle pain than relaxation. However, assured that this time it will be different I opted to roll the dice and try again. And I am very happy I did. The therapist was clearly very experienced and although there was a lot of stretching, she was able to easily feel my bodies limits and ensured that by the end of the treatment my muscles were left feeling loose and not overstretched. Would I try it again? Yes, I would, but only with a therapist I know really understands how to professionally perform the treatment, like the therapist that did my treatment at Lum’a Spa. Both treatments started by cleaning and purifying the feet in a large basin, ensuring the ultimate hygiene. The treatment rooms were very comfortable and immaculately presented. Two points that are extremely important when visiting any spa facility. Although the Traditional Thai Massage did not require any oil (as it is more focused on stretching movements) the Lum’a Five Element Aroma did, and my companion was able to select a relaxing lavender oil which added to his overall experience. Both therapists were highly professional and fully explained the treatments in advance, they both performed the massage treatments with care and precision, allowing us to relax and unwind.
