Project Name: SHIR HA-MA'ALOT COMMUNITY Role: Presentation Model Making Location: Irvine, California Date: Sep 2014

INTRODUCTION Shir Ha-Ma’alot is a Reform Jewish Community that provides a spiritual home guided by memory and mitzvah, committed to mentsch making & making meaning. This project is to provide the client a new master plan of the Shir Ha-Ma’alot community in Irvine, California. With the function of classrooms, temple, chapel and parking centralizing, we want to create a space for the community members to communicate.

PROFESSIONAL WORK Project Name: UCLA Garden Pavilion Role: Working Model Making, CAD Drawing, Field Researching Location: Los Angeles, California Date: Oct 2014

INTRODUCTION This project is in the Mildred E. Mathias Botanical Garden which located in the campus of UCLA. It serves as a long-term repository for unusual plants, a refugium for biodiversity. Since Lehrer Architects designed a trail for the pedestrian inside the garden, now as the visitors inside become more and more, it is necessory to have a pavilion for them with the functions of cafe, rest areas and so on. Therefore, they can enjoy a better trip.

CULTURAL INFLUENCE The site is on the Bunker Hill and next to the cultural axis of Los Angeles, several cultural nodes, like the Walt Disney Concert Hall, the Broad Museum, the MOCA, the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, create a cultural atmosphere in this area. Therefore, it becomes an essential element in our design process.

PRESENT SITUATION ---TRANSPORTATION Since the site is inside Downtown LA, the public transportation in this area is very convinient. As the graph shows, there are several metro stations around. In the meanwhile, the site is also close to Freeway 110. What particularly worth mentioning is that the street beside the site, Grand Ave, is a double-layered road. Therefore, we think it is a advantage for us to seperate the two entrances of our design.

---DEMOGRAPHIC The data in the Downtown Los Angeles Demographic Study 2013 confirms Downtown Los Angeles is a growing community that hungers for more of just about everything that a big city center traditionally offers. The Study not only solidly indicates positive and sustainable trends, it also reveals that the Downtown population continues to grow, is highly educated, affluent, and employed at levels that exceed city and county averages.

PROGRAM IN PUBLIC SPACE

A. Terrace Gallery Considering most residents living in this apartment work in art, a gallery is necessary which may give them more inspiration.

B. Cafe Since the amount of cafe in this area is not enough, we set several cafes inside the building. In the meanwhile, they provide more communication space.

C. High Bridge The high bridge between the two towers not only make them into an integrate system, but also create a continuous neibourhood.

D. Entrance Platform Because our site is next to the Broad Museum’s Plaza, we set an entrance platform on the ground level to extend the public atmosphere.

INTENTION Qingxiu Mountain has become one of the landmarks in Nanning since its remarkable natural scenery. However, the surrounding facilities hamper its further development. Therefore, the local government decided to construct some buildings not only providing some leisure places for the citizens but also exhibiting their own culture and scenery to the visitors from all over the world.

PLANS & ACCESS DESIGN This group of buildings is mainly used for exhibition and receiption since it is in the entrance zone of the whole area. From an overall view of point, the layout of the buildings is in a circle style and divided into two seperate parts. The northeast, north and west part is used for the exhibition and there are connections between each two buildings so that the visiting access is more continuous. In the meanwhile, the southeast corner is used for receiption.

TRADITIONAL ELEMENTS

In the field researching process, I was impressed with the traditional elements of the local dwellings and decided to use them into my design. The wooden structural frame and the outdoor stairs not only provide more space inside the building but also fit it into the surroundings.

GENERAL SITUATION The KEY points about the competition is “elderly community” and “opening”, our group interprets it in the following way. The design of the new elderly community should show more about sociality and naturality. People, especially the senior citizens, need to get easy access to nature, which is of human instincts. Further more, with the development of the society and the other words, serves as an indicator that the design of the sociality space and activity space should meets the demand of the elderly.

With the development of our economy and the increasing of the population, the exploration of new living mode for elders will continue. According to the reduction of the available land, we should make our design more efficient and three-dimensional. That is our initial and insistent goal.

RECREATION

In the elevation design, we choose this latticed form since it can satisfy the fundamental requirement of the daylighting and be adapt to all kinds of devision in the meanwhile. CONCEPT

As an important architectural node of the traditional planning of South China University of Technology, the site is intensly impressed by the existed axis. Both the peripheral buildings and the surrounded environment show a symmetric order. In the site plan, the library adopts a layout of homocentric square, which guarantees the respects to the original axis. In the meanwhile, divide the whole building into two separate parts. It allows the idea of making differences in a united situation and makes it more convinient to discriminate different functions. origin

FORMATION PROCESS

Library is somewhere inspires students to obtain knowledge, in other words, it is just a place which provides all kinds of possibilities for the “growth” of students. This word immediately reminds me of the bamboos, dougong and something else whose growth just like the process of our students’ study.

•Forming

•Paring

•Differentiation

•Dislocation

•Overhang

•Roofgreening

To keep respect to the existed axis in the original campus planning, the project thinks highly of symmetry.

Divide one block to two parts, distinguish them by the differences in their height.

Use the method of overhanging to create more comfortable space for students to read and get rid of being influenced by the sunshine.

Respond to the courtyards around, escavating a courtyard from the original block. It is also beneficial to build up quiet atmosphere.

Dislocate the two independent part in different direction, break the traditional symmetry in a respectful attitude.

Because of the weather in south China, cultivating shrubs on the roof is advantageous to decreasing temperature.

INTRODUCTION The MAIN purpose of this competition is to discover a new characteristic of some kind of material under a creative processing technic. In the meanwhile, use this characteristic to establish a new formation. WAX, being easy to burn, insoluble in water, with a low melting point, seems to be fragile. BACKBONE, the main component of one’s skeleton, supports the whole body with its solidness and strength. Eventually, we find a effective way to combine these two opposite objects together.

•Material

•Flammibility

•Meltability

Wax is generating from lipa distilled from animals, plants and minerals.

Candles are the most common form of wax which proves its flammibility.

The melting point of wax is low so that it can be easily transfered into liquid.

•Exploration

•Origin

•Experiment

Find some other characteristics after looking up some materials on the Internet and books.

As an organ to support human’s body and cushion severe pressure, the structure of backbone is stable.

Attempt to make the wax similar to the shape of backbone so that it can present a stable form.

•Water absorbing Use needle tubing to absorb water from beaker.

•Segmentation

•Melting

Divide the candle into some small parts.

Melt the small parts of wax into liquid form.

•Adhering Place the balloon into the melted wax and wait for a few minutes.

•Cooling Use water to cool the wax into solid form.

FUNCTIONS The Second Skin is mobile, compact, flexible and intelligent. Ideally, it can perform the very function of a house and even offer more. Minimally, the Second Skin addresses the core functions of a house, I.E. protecting its host from intruders, the environment, harsh climate and public gaze.

-The pictures on the left use the projector to show the temperature change inside the Second Skin so that it can be adapted to different weather conditions.
