A NEW LEVEL IN THE NIGHTCLUB WORLD HAS BEEN REACHED

One of the finest nightclub spaces in the nation has been reborn. The Hotel Rock Lobby will be presented to the public on Friday, March 22nd. Dramatic is the only word that comes close to defining the design, sound system and atmosphere in this world class nightclub. Manhattan niteclub veteran Tommy Finneran and promoter Josh Sagman have created an A-Team of professionals in niteclub design and operation that have reached the goal of creating something the planet has never seen before. Jeff Reiss was brought in to prepare and design a sound system that features over 70 speakers meticulously placed in recessed and flying locations,

creating 20 sound zones of various levels, making conversation possible throughout the entire club. Dancing, unlike on PGA Blvd., will be permitted everywhere including a long catwalk and numerous bars, VIP areas and the massive dance floor. This is an upscale environment where you can wear your best and feel right at home with the surroundings. Within the confines of the many areas all genres of music will be heard from Dance, R &B, Rap, Hot 80’s and live appearances. Rock Lobby and Hotel are two distinct club venues within one space. Rock Lobby will be a more casual concept while the Hotel area will be more ultra-chic, modeled towards a boutique European hotel. For information call 651-1110 or visit www.hotelrocklobby.com. The nightlife world has a new center - live life to it’s fullest - be there.

GOOD TIMES FOR DINERS AS RESTAURANT CHOICES MULTIPLY E

conomy in recession? You wouldn’t know it from the recent business openings in our area. In fact many cities in the south are experiencing an explosion of new restaurants & niteclubs. In the downtown Atlanta area, 13 new restaurants opened in March. Every area of WPB is experiencing new openings. The Northwood area celebrated the opening of Sueno Latino restaurant, which is drawing great reviews by locals who appreciate the $5.95 lunch special. Owner Domingo Reyes has done an outstanding job on this space and is serving food that is extremely pleasing and tasty. Service at Sueno Latino is quick, the food is cooked fresh and the atmosphere is spotless, all important ingredients to success. See this page for info. Northwood Village is having events to celebrate new openings, recently at the Garden House and on Saturday, March 22nd from noon to 5PM there will be another Promenade event. The events feature free food from local restaurants, beverages and deals on all kinds of marvelous items. Bring the kids to the Saturday event - there will be an Easter Egg hunt and they can have photos taken with the Northwood Easter

NIGHT LIFE

BARON BEATTY Bunny! There is so much happening in Northwood they will be having the Promenade events every third Saturday of the month. This is a great social scene drawing WPB Commissioners and the Mayor to them. So if you’re looking for face time with a local politician this is the place to get it. Downtown WPB has experienced multiple openings of several restaurants and the new Hotel Rock Lobby at City Place. All of these are taking place as we head into the summer season, formerly a cemetery for new businesses. Our area is experiencing what Ft. Lauderdale went thru in the 1990’s. The year round business provided by locals became enough to sustain more restaurants and night life businesses through the summer. This year was an important step in that direction, as the seasonal increases in business levels were less noticeable than in years past, but customer counts faced

less of a drop off in May & June. The result is more restaurateurs taking the gamble of opening at any time during the year, something only fools attempted 5 years ago. The benefit of this is consumers, who now can count on more choices, better value, more attention from owners and more fun at night! When you’re on the move and need fast but healthy take-out, one restaurant that has built a stellar reputation is Sushi Jo. The location on Belvedere has long been considered the best takeout in town. Now northern county residents can experience top-shelf take-out at the Sushi Jo location in PGA Commons Central. Hot menu items or fresh sushi can be yours in a flash and the easy parking only steps from the front door combined with the Sushi Jo system of perfecting the take-out process will show you what I’m talking about. You can enjoy a

series of menu items that will satisfy your whole family at great prices and add healthy nutrition packed foods to their diets - see page 10, go to their website and call in your order now! What a crowd last Friday at the Sunset Grill! The tremendous Happy Hour is drawing a fun-loving group of revelers that includes many local business people and politicians. 2-4-1 drinks are always fun but with the new “Sunset Nickels” good for your second drink you never have to gulp down a drink you’re not ready for. Just pocket the nickel and bring it in for a free drink during the next Happy Hour! One of the best dining deals in town is the Sunset Dinner special from 5-6PM Wednesday to Saturday at the Sunset Grill. You can enjoy Chef Terry Marince’s world-class preparations for only $14.95! That includes three courses! See the front cover and make reservations for tonight! Anoth er out s t anding deal for early evening dining is at the famous Nonna Maria Restaurant on Northlake Blvd. If you enjoy Chicken Marsala this may be the best west of the Atlantic ocean. To get a huge Chicken Marsala, plus soup or salad, plus dessert for only $15.95 is a steal!

You can choose from 9 menu items - all included in this great deal! Owner/Chef Francois and his wife Judy are the definition of hands on - every shift they are making sure you get everything you want and it is perfect. See page 12 and do dinner at the longest continually operating restaurant on Northlake Blvd.! I stopped by Leila last Saturday night and those who made reservations were happy to have a table - the place was sold out by 6PM for the entire night! When the stars are in the sky and the weather is cool the private patio at Leila is the place to dine, whether you want outstanding food or just to be seen at the right place, or both. Owner Roy Assad had the unfortunate duty of turning away over 50 people who walked in - I urge you to make reservations for dinner at this Mecca of healthy Middle-Eastern cuisine. This menu is one of a kind, as we grow older and eat the same foods all the time, the menu at Leila will amaze you. Different foods, different preparations, different presentations and foods that will surprise you and enlighten your taste buds to new sensations - see the back cover and make the call for tonight!

s the downtown WPB scene explodes there is something new from a place that has built its reputation customer by customer over the last 4 years. Bonds is undoubtedly the leader in the lunch & nightclub experience. Now on Thursday, Friday & Saturday nights they have brought in a famous Chef and are serving dinner from 7PM to 11PM. Chef Eskey Moore from the New York Circus Café is offering his creations like Pistachio Crusted Chicken Breast and the unbelievable Bonds Pasta - Sausage, Chicken & Peppers tossed with Pasta Alfredo. The menu includes steak & lobster items and an exquisite Vegetable Lasagna. The atmosphere in the Bonds dining room is classy but the prices are very competitive, with sharp service and here’s a tip - on Thursday nights Bonds has a live jazz band starting at 8PM with no cover - see page 9 and make reservations for a new dining experience! There are moments in life when you have the privilege to look back in history and say “I was there.” That moment is now for the world-famous Johnny Longboat’s! Due to the bulldozing of the current structure to build the new Ocean Mall development, Johnny Longboat’s will be closing in the next 45 days. Lenny and the gang will be back when the new building is complete, at the same location, but what you see now will be gone forever. Now is your final chance to dine oceanfront on the deck at this landmark restaurant, to enjoy a frozen drink at the bar, to have a Grouper-in-the-Bag with the ocean breeze dancing thru your hair. There may be the mother of all parties the final night of operation, stop in for info on the exact date. We’ll all be there for the Grand Re-Opening, hopefully within 7 months. Won’t it be nice to be able to say “I had dinner at the original Longboat’s when it was a one-story building.” Owner Lenny and the entire gang of servers & cooks want to thank you for giving them the privilege of serving you and look forward to seeing you one last time before the bulldozer arrives. See page 2 for info. Some things in life must be the best. When you only get to have one birthday cake a year it better be the best. The Tulipan Family Bakery has understood this for over twenty years. Any business that last 20 years in this town must be doing everything right! For your next birthday, anniversary or special event don’t waste your money on a second-rate grocery store cake that everyone will recognize as cheap. Call in your order or stop by either Tulipan location and do it right - you’ll amazed how moderate the price is and the quality is unbeatable - see page 4 and find out why Tulipan has lasted over 20 years! I got a call from a former school mate who lives on the Island - she said she had to thank me for what she read about a restaurant in my column. Haven’t heard from her in 15 years. She and 7 of her society pals booked a table at The Little Teahouse on Antique Row and had what she called “A fabulous afternoon.” She said the food was “sumptuous” the service was “perfectly quaint” but what amazed her friends was the “colorful atmosphere.” They were all impressed by getting a private room where they could converse among themselves without being overheard by others and having a private ladies room. She remarked how the ladies room “was just like home, not like a commercial restroom.” Sometimes you never know what’s important to people. One thing about The Little Teahouse, you can have lunch there 10 times and not see or experience everything they have to offer. Sitting on the patio you can see the looks of amazement on people’s faces when they come thru the narrow entrance into a tropical garden of multiple rooms and the outdoor deck. Owner Vera Petriello, Adam & Michael are the perfect hosts for your next party - see page 13 for info. Doctors & health experts all agree that eating salmon at least once a week is good for you. Here’s an inexpensive way to do it - go to Fresh Catch in Northwood! They have salmon fillets for only $4.99 a pound! That’s at least $2 cheaper per pound than the grocery store. You’ll also find many other fresh seafood items like blue crabs and shrimp - see page 6 for info. Big new promotions at the best time in town - the Golden Jubilee Arcade on Northlake Blvd across from K- Mart! Fridays, in addition to everything else are Papa Johns Pizza Night! Saturday nights they host the best Online Bingo night in town! Take a night this week, if you have never had fun at the Golden Jubilee, and just show up ready to enjoy the hottest new concept in video arcade games. It costs next to nothing and you’ll get a ton of freebies along with a good chance of big winnings! See page 4 and call for details! It’s that time of year again - time to have some exotic fun and register for summer sailing lessons at the Palm Beach Sailing Club! The wonderful thing about this is, besides being very inexpensive, you don’t need a boat to participate! The Sailing Club provides the boat and the instructor. You’ll be taught by professional sailing teachers who know the local waters better than anyone - see page 14 and reserve your spot today - it’s also a perfect gift for kids! I got 6 phone calls from locals about the awesome clothes and gear at Palm Beach Boys Club on S. County Road in Palm Beach. One caller reminded me about the shop next door - Aristakids. This shop is the ultimate in kool kids stuff - clothes and gear. Between the 2 shops you’ll put smiles on every face in the family - see page 2 for info! Sole Estate on Clematis has reached a deal with Nike and is getting the hottest new sneakers and shoes on the market at their shop first. Owner J.P. said they will be hosting their famed art shows featuring cutting edge works by local artist in April - if you are an artist just making the scene call J.P. and get the next date - these parties draw huge crowds from the Palm Beach art world - see page 2 for info. If you have a friend or enjoy smoking fine cigars yourself - a superb gift idea is custom made & rolled cigars with your name on them! You can get them locally from master Cuban cigar roller Yojanny Nistal at Haberneros on Dixie Hwy. You’ll see it rolled right in front of you with the finest tobacco available in the world. A great birthday or office gift - see page 4 for info! My congrats to the hardest working man in show biz, Neil London of ICTV1.com - he fought thru a little down time at Good Sam and came out strong! ICTV1 is still the number one entertainment website on the east coast according to Google. Let’s finish the winter season strong by enjoying life and remembering to eat, drink & be merry!

WILL RESTAURANTS OF THE FUTURE HAVE WAITERS? By Eric Eitner

As we advance into this generation of technology and those who grew up with it many things will change during the next 20 years in the hospitality industry. Restaurateurs are always looking for ways to cut cost without affecting service. This summer the new “Airport of the Future” will open in Seattle. The check-in desk so hated by consumers is gone - in its place are huge islands of selfcheck-in kiosk. While the following is not something I recommend for full service restaurants now, video screens for restaurant tables are being developed with workings similar to the I-Phone. You walk into the restaurant past the unattended hostess stand, find a table you like and sit down. By running your credit card into the video screen it turns on. On the screen appears “Order Drinks” - “Order Appetizers” - “Order Entrees” and so on. When you touch “Order Drinks” a huge selection of drinks appears - when you touch “Rum Runner” a photo of the Rum Runner served appears. When you touch “Order Entrees” and touch “Cowboy Sirloin Steak” a photo of that appears. The days of paper menus are gone. Restaurateurs learned long ago that pictures of food sell better then words describing them. This process cuts down service waits by 30%. You don’t have to wait for a server to come to you, engage in conversation as humans do (wasting time) then go find a computer and ring your order. Those tech savvy folks enter the restaurant, punch in their complete order and within 1 minute of sitting down the bartender is mixing their drink, the cook is preparing their entrée and they have drinks and food in front of them in record time. When I was at the legendary Lake Placid Club hosting the International Olympic Committee in 1980, grappling with thousands of people arriving speaking 100 different languages while being able to quickly serve them food was a hot topic of conversation. People can understand photos of food, no matter what language they speak. Video screens can be set up to allow selection of any language on the customer end, while still appearing in the native language of the staff in the back of the house. Bartender/drink runners and food runners bring your orders to your table. 1 manager roams the floor to help with any tech-ignorance issues. The screen has your credit card information, when you press “order” - your card is charged eliminating the old dine-n-dash. In the future, instead of 6 waiters, 2 busboys, a bartender and a hostess in a 100 seat restaurant, you have 2 food runners/busboys and a bartender. Obviously for the top-end or even mid-level gourmet restaurant this system won’t suffice. But for the corporate cafeteria or mass food operation it may. From where we are now to the point of using this technology will be several steps and perhaps 10 years. For information on how to improve your service while cutting labor cost in today’s market call me, the future is now! The answer to the headline question is yes, good restaurants will always have waiters - a professional server who can explain food preparation, ingredients and most importunately - sell - will always be necessary in most restaurants. Eric Eitner is a 35-year Hospitality Specialist who is called on for the top events in our industry. He regularly organizes premier dinner galas for film releases with stars like Burt Reynolds, and became famous for Co-hosting with Regine (World-renowned for her Parisian Clubs around the Globe) the VIP Club for the Miami Grand Prix & served as Host for the International Olympic Committee in 1980 at the Lake Placid Club. Today he operates Hospitality Resolutions LLC and assists local hospitality & restaurant owners in improving all aspects of their operations, from dramatic opening parties to standard procedures. Trained as a Master Chef in France, he has also developed an organic food concept for cafes, office cafeterias, schools and existing restaurants called the Organic Sandwich Boutique, offering natural & organic food creations. He can be reached at 561-603-7851 or chminter@aol.com for a confidential conversation on how to improve your profit & loss.

PALM BEACH TRUMP PLANS MORE DESTRUCTION OF PALM BEACH L

eave it to Donald “Dumpster” Trumpster to get a great deal on an oceanfront mansion then attempt to turn a private home into a public business. That’s what he did at Mar-A-Lago, after buying it for a song he was quoted saying the million dollar a year taxes & maintenance were “more than anyone could afford” so the town must approve his plan to turn it into a country club. The town took the bait and gave Trump what he wanted. Dumpster responded by allowing just about anyone from anywhere with money into the club, overstuffing the ballroom allegedly past the point of violating the fire code, attempted to stiff a local chandelier shop on a huge bill, then putting up a ridiculously oversized flag without permission while barking to the press and embarrassing the town day after day. Just weeks ago Trump claimed he didn’t even know he paid taxes close to a million dollars for last year on Abe Gossman’s former oceanfront home. He made the statement in the presence of our closeted Governor Charlie Crist, at a fundraiser held in New York to raise money to lower tax rates in Florida. (It doesn’t make any sense to me either) Dumpster bought the home at auction for about $43 million. Now he wants to tear it down and build the “most luxurious hotel in the world” smack in the middle of single family homes. Imagine if you had worked hard for 40 years, got lucky and could afford to buy a $50 million oceanfront home. Then Trump bought the house next door and announced he was building a 200 suite hotel. He attempted the same thing in WPB 2 years ago, but all the neighbors on Flagler are left with is an empty lot and signs, no construction has started. Sources claim the reason no construction has started is Dumpster has no cash to build it. These same sources claim the reason Dumpster is pushing this project is he can’t afford to hang onto the massive 6-acre property and realizes the few buyers in the world that can afford it don’t need it, and are waiting him out. Others say an offer of $90 million was made on it by a current Palm Beacher, but allegedly Trump’s massive ego would not allow it to be sold for $35 million under his asking price. Dumpster added this jewel- “The town really needs a new luxury hotel.” Yes, with only the Breakers, the 5-Star Four Seasons and the 5-Star Ritz Carlton, the Palm Beach area is really struggling for high end rooms. In Dumpsters view it’s so bad we should start leveling neighborhood homes and building hotels. If the town of Palm Beach falls for this one they will have broken the “fool me once” rule of life. Gowdy gone wild………Some locals are amazed it took this long. Legendary broadcaster and multimillionaire Curt Gowdy, who passed away, made millions in the radio and TV station business. His daughter Cheryl, who lived locally in Palm Beach at the twenty-five million dollar historic lakefront family home and then was moved into a high-floor condo at an exclusive tower that begins with “T” in WPB, was finally convicted of DUI. The conviction stems from an incident downtown when she was allegedly drunk at the wheel of her Jaguar and hit the car in front of her. Sources who know her say it was a long time coming. Cheryl allegedly told the officer she had not slept for three days after breaking up with a boyfriend. The heir to a massive fortune, Cheryl is well liked locally and known for having fun. Maybe too much fun. Some close to her claim an alleged disco dust habit may have aided her sleepless nights. Others say Cheryl has always been troubled by her famous fathers huge presence and how newly made friends react when they find out she is “Red Sox Broadcaster Curt Gowdy’s daughter.” Either way it has not been a charmed life for the 56 year old gal, who is still prone to emotional breakdowns, according to sources. Those who know Cheryl say she is all heart, a person who would “do anything for you”. One former boyfriend told me “she’s just lost, has no identity, no direction, no reason to stay sober.” The old adage of “money doesn’t buy happiness” is a hard truth. Rehab CEO gets busted for drunk driving……….This guy has no excuse. Doug Tieman, the CEO of the rehab giant Caron Foundation, which runs the Renaissance Institute of Palm Beach spent the night in jail after being popped for DUI. Not only did this alleged do-gooder drive drunk, he was leaving one of our famed strip clubs, where he is known as a “regular.” I wonder if society big shots like Lois Pope & Petra Levin knew they were contributing to Doug’s strip club fund when they attended the recent “Lifesaver Gala” at Mar-A-Lago. This guy oversees a rehab company that now has an endowment close to $20 million from wealthy patrons. Like the big man that he isn’t, jail staffers claimed he was “crying like a baby” when he called his daughter asking her “please come get me out of jail.” I wonder what step in the rehab program hanging out in strip clubs is? 406,000 people have fallen in Florida and can’t get up……..And that was in just three months! Recent numbers from a 3-month period in 2006 released by the U.S. Government show that 406,000 Florida seniors took a spill. Over 140,000 needed to get treatment for the fall. Nationally, over 5 million seniors fell down during the same period, with over 1.7 million needing medical attention. I guess those folks who ran that TV commercial knew what they were doing. Merv lived the life……..Last year an old-timer named Merv Griffin passed on and left behind a life worth living. No TV news show I saw really covered his full life as a gay man in 1950’s -60’s Hollywood. Merv bedded down with the most famous gay men of his era, including Rock Hudson, Errol Flynn, Roddy McDowell, and called Liberace his “best friend.” The last person outside of his son, Tony, to see him was Nancy Reagan, whom he’d met years before she even knew Ronald. Merv originally met Nancy when she was dating Clark Gable in the 1940’s. Merv married under pressure from the studio in 1958 and fathered his son. He divorced in 1976 and spent the rest of his life squiring around Eva Gabor to keep up a front. Merv made most of his money off “Jeopardy” and “Wheel of Fortune” - it is estimated that during his life he made over $50 million in royalties off the jingle for Jeopardy

played when contestants are deciding on their answer. He called it “Think” - it took less than 20 minutes for him to write it. In spite of or because of what he faced as a gay man, he had no sympathy for his workers, he fought a union drive at his Hilton hotel in Deerfield Beach, using hardball tactics and cut-throat lawyers and was said to be the leading voice in the labor negotiations that produced a violent, 3-day strike in Atlantic City, when he owned Resorts Casino. Originally a 1950’s crooner, many thought he would die out like the others of the bobby-sox era, but Merv constantly surprised the world. He was finally outed beyond show biz circles when a man he made famous, dancer Denny Terrio, who starred in Merv’s “Dance Fever” sued him for sexual harassment. Merv was one of a kind. Still smoking……..Who would have thought squeaky clean Mary Ann from Gilligan’s Island is a pothead. Dawn Wells, who played the part, now lives in Idaho, that cultural melting pot of whiteness. She has been sentenced to 5 days in jail and fined $410.50 after being busted with half-smoked joints in her car after a cop pulled her over for “weaving.” He smelled weed when he approached the car. When he asked Mary Ann about the smell she came up with this doozey “I just picked up 3 hitchhikers and dropped them off after they started smoking something.” Friends appeared in court and claimed she wasn’t high or drunk, but was weaving due to “trying to find the heater controls in her new car.” In other pothead news celebrities are spilling the beans about their ganja habits in a new book called “Pot Culture.” Melissa Etheridge, Rob Thomas, Adam Levine (of Maroon 5), Jackass star Steve-O, Jonah Hill, model Adrianne Curry and others share their stoner expertise on things like smoking out of an apple and making gravity bongs. And the beat goes on. What they won’t tell you ……….. That the unlucky fellow from Britain who was named lead investigator into charges that the British military helped the CIA send captured Muslims to secret prisons where they were tortured, Michael Todd, was found dead days ago. His investigation had forced Britain to admit that it allowed the CIA to refuel planes carrying prisoners at its base in the Indian Ocean, called Diego Garcia. His ongoing investigation was allegedly set to issue a report that would have implicated the CIA, senior Bush administration officials and the British Secret Service in numerous acts of outright kidnapping and torture. The report will most likely be sanitized or die with Mr. Todd, who was in perfect health until this assignment came along. No major news organization in the U.S. touched the story. …………..That Catholic clerics from Iraq’s tiny Christian population are being systematically kidnapped and killed. Archbishop Paulos Faraj Rahho was kidnapped in the latest attack and killed along with three of his aides……..That European media is focused now on the story of Khaled al-Maqtari who was held in isolation by the U.S. for nearly three years at a secret site and beaten, tortured with sleep deprivation, suspension upside-down in painful positions, intimidation by dogs and induced hypothermia…….Then there is this coming out of last years secret Bilderberg Group meeting of world-wide corporate leaders. Led by a Rockefeller, they have set their sights on picking dry the last underdeveloped continent in the world - Africa. You may have wondered why in this turbulent economic time our President saw fit to recently travel to Africa while the Iraq war raged on. There was nothing accomplished on this trip to the naked eye. The alleged truth is that Bush went because various Bilderberg Group business leaders want to get agreements to exploit the raw materials in Africa, - oil, gold, diamonds, uranium, etc., and told local leaders they could “deliver” a visit from the most powerful man in the world as proof that they can be trusted. This is a tried and true method that goes hand in hand with bribes and deals that create powerful dictators in poor nations. As long as the dictator plays ball with our corporations, we turn a blind eye to their misdeeds. When they stop playing ball they get the Hugo Chavez treatment. Since Chavez kicked the U.S. oil companies out the Bush administration has tried several times unsuccessfully to start a conflict in Venezuela, recently sending CIA sponsored troops from Columbia into Venezuela to kill 24 people they labeled as “rebels” - Chavez didn’t bite, as he probably knew any return of action against Columbia would have opened the door to Bush sending troops to the region and doing a Noriega on him. This follows the failed takeover of the Venezuela government during Bush’s first term where they briefly installed the local Chamber of Commerce president as leader until Chavez’s supporters took to the streets and ran him out of the country. Now for the record I’m no fan of Chavez, or terrorists, or anyone who attacks us, but if half the stuff our crafty government civilian officials and secret society types do was reported in our alleged “free press” the country would be in an uproar. Have you heard about………The society maven with the initials H.H. who has allegedly been paying Palm Beach Today publishers their cost for entire pages to make sure her photo is displayed prominently…….That “Mary Poppins” star Julie Andrews admitted she is a love child from an affair her married mother had at a lakeside beach, she met her biological father at age 14 but kept this secret for over 50 years………..That the Fanjuls have again been accused of blocking a documentary detailing their severe labor practices from being shown at the Miami International Film Festival………..It was 4 months ago I told you about a highpriced sex scandal that would be breaking concerning internet escort services being supplied to Palm Beachers, they got NY Gov. Spitzer as a bonus but he was not the main target, that is still to come……..The recently arrived hometownboy news reporter being groomed for an anchor chair - he allegedly left a trail of broken gay relationships at his former job in the Midwest, and has kept up a torrid pace since he arrived here……..The Palm Beacher with the initials J.K. who has been a fixture on the Forbes list, that is so cheap last Christmas he handed out measly $200 checks to his longtime staffers at his sprawling oceanfront Palm Beach estate……Remember, don’t repeat a word of this! It’s all on the QT!
