Izmir Opera House aims to generate different scaled typographic fragments by mediating between the micro-scaled daily life and macro-scaled metropolis building. The project aims to turn typography into architecture, architectural daily life. By intersecting its typography with the city, the building recalls the importance of the geographical character of the city for the urban life. The project questions the relationship between the citizen and earth. In this scenario, the crystal is used as a metaphorical tool. Crystallization emphasizes the dependence of its development to the local conditions. Just like the salt that appears after the evaporation of sea water over time, Izmir Opera House brings together different social groups and over time conglomerates them. The design shuttles between geology, geography and geometry. Crystallization turns undefined earth into defined entities.

Design and modeling Radiolaria Structure through Maya. Developed different variations and representation techniques. Radiolaria Structure fabrication through 3D Printing. (Rhino + Maya) Designed and produced physical model for radiolaria environment. 3D Animation of radiolaria. (Maya Animation + Adobe After Effects + Quick Time) Renderings and representations. *Radiolaria: The Radiolaria are organism that produce intricate mineral skeletons (diameter 0.1 0.2mm). — Wikipedia This projects aims to investigate designing living biological creature that occupies those mineral skeletons of radiolaria. Radiolaria was modeled using digital tools like Rhino, Grasshopper, and Maya— The model itself was rendered on Mental-Ray. Through photoshop and matte-painting, different representation techniques were developed to best capture the radiolaria. The model is produced using a combination of digital fabrication of the piece with 3D printing and an environment created with toothpicks. The project consisted of three phases. Withing these phases a 4,400 sqf renovation of existing Commission House #2 was to be engaged in the first phase, followed by a second in which a new Cold Storage Facility is to be. The concept of the symbiosis of apparently incongruous uses was born as an attempt to bring together local farmers, food, food distribution and the neighbourhood in the Food Hub. A public corridor connects the neighborhood and regional market. The building was designed as a longitudinal bar with solid-void openings as a means to create a transparent/ transcluent effect that would engage with the existing historical industrial buildings. This translucent affect is enforced with the use of mesh panels that covers the existing brick construction of the commission houses and the new buildings. This gives a modern, yet “historical” aesthetic to the new building. The most notorious architectural element of the new building consists of an Active Roof (or Passive Energy Roof) which, through the use of extruded metal “Fins”, harvests snow on top of the Cold Storage areas. In between the four Cold Storage “Pods” the fins angle and have solar panels attached to it. The twist of the fins is meant for them to face directly to the sun and have the best solar gain throughout the year.

Single Project

The project is a proposal for Brooklyn Bridge Park hotel and residential development adjacent to Pier 1. Brooklyn Bridge Park is one of the best sites in the City to enjoy the incredible view of Brooklyn Bridge and Manhattan. The longitudinal site is 553 feet by 120 feet with total footprint of 65000 sq. feet. The building form, designed as an extension of the landscape, creates a new experience on the park, especially with its walkable skin and rooftop. While the outside shell becomes the extension of the public space, the rising part of the form frames the Brooklyn Bridge and Manhattan view for its hotel and residential users. The form, by its simplicity, celebrates the landscape experience and works together with it. The reflective surface under the lifted part captures the Manhattan view. Hotel = 200 rooms Residential Restaurant/cafe: 17500 sq feet Parking: 300 spaces.

INTERSECTIONS

SINGLE PROJECT SYRACUSE UNIVERSITY

The work is an abstract form that researches the simple action of intersection in planes. The piece suggests hybridization of euclidian spaces through superimposition/ juxtapositions create in between spaces that create flexibility. Superimposition encourages interactions and extensions of spaces. This Topology can begin to re-consider questions of figure/ground contextualism. It no longer creates a separation of figure/ ground but a separation where a continuous and reversible dialogue can occur. Through intersections, it is possible to create a dynamism that suggest variable spaces through parallax and create simultaneous interactions within it. A topological space with emerging possible interactions suggests multiple fluid edges. “Intersections” establishes non-hierarchical relationships that can change the hierarchy of action superimposition of linear space and time.

Cesme is located on the west coast of Turkey, and is one of the primary locations to experience Mediterranean and Aegean culture. The project is a proposal for the competition hosted by Izmir Chamber of Commerce to build a better water front for Cesme to enhance these iconic experiences. The design aims to make a center where the tourists and local people can gather and work without interrupting one another. The area is designed to have a center of health, culture, nature, sport, shopping and mediterranean cuisine. For this purpose, the area is designed according to a slow city movement (citta-slow) that is more pedestrian friendly, with less traffic and vehicles.

Isover Multi-Comfort Student House Contest 3RD AWARD and INTERNATIONAL AWARD 2010 - TURKEY AND AUSTRIA

Team: Dincer Savaskan Gizem Bayhan

The premise of this competition was to renovate and refurbishment of an old warehouse in Pantin, Paris, according to passive-energy system principles. The vacant building facade has been an attraction point for the local graffiti artists over the years. The idea was not to add passive energy systems to the building with a secondary skin, while not disturbing the urban memory that has been constructed. This building in particular is being refurbished as an art school. The building’s skin is designed according to the sun-light and wind parameters and is also designed to distribute the noise that comes from the river traffic. The skin is covered with PV panels which is used to meet the electricity, heating and cooling consumption of the building. The active skin also harvests rain that is used for landscape and as grey water.

The vision for the development of Taichung is “Cosmopolitan Taichung”—a city with strong cultural, economic and international characteristics. To distinguish herself from Taipei and Kaohsiung, the third biggest city in Taiwan has placed arts and culture at the core of her urban identity. “Culture”, also a key contributor to the city’s economy and international presence, has been identified as the most important trait of Taichung.
