History of Sealy, Texas S

ealy, located at the intersection of I-10 and Hwy 36 ( just 48 miles west of Houston) in south central Austin County, was formed as a railroad town in 1879. Once part of the San Felipe de Austin Town Corporation land was sold to the railroad and named to honor George Sealy, a Galveston railroad director. Sealy became a commercial shipping center and many of the early residents were railroad employees. In 1889 a fire on Front Street obliterated the wooden commercial property near the railroad. Sealy experienced a series of misfortunes, including a disastrous Brazos River flood in 1899, the relocation of the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe division headquarters to Bellville in January of the next year, and the devastating hurricane of 1900, which struck in September. The establishment, however, of such manufacturing enterprises as the Haynes Mattress Factory, the Engleking Brothers Broom Factory, and the Sealy National Bank helped to build the commercial reputation with their help the town rebuilt and today is the largest town in the county. SEALY MATTRESS Sealy’s claim to fame comes from the world famous Sealy Mattress. Although no Sealy mattresses were ever manufactured here, Daniel Haynes (ca. 1885) perfected the technique and equipment patents in Sealy which he later sold in 1906 to a group of investors who went on to make the Sealy Mattress a household name. HISTORIC DOWNTOWN Browsing through Sealy’s Historic Downtown area with antique and gift shops, quaint Cafes, museums, some housed in historic buildings along with many shopping districts throughout the city are a great start to any weekend. Many historic period homes abound in and around town to add to your enjoyment. If you are one of

those that live to eat true Texas style southern cuisine- Sealy boasts at least two legendary eateries Tony’s Family GEORGE SEALY Restaurant serving locals and visitors since 1936 and Hinze’s BBQ, voted one of the ten best in the state. You can pick from over 30 different food establishments, so Sealy does have something for just about everyone! SEALY TODAY Sealy is a multifaceted modern city with lots to offer the visitor looking to spend a quiet weekend in the country or people looking for a quality of life they can’t find in the big city. A faith-based municipality with good schools, strong business community, and progressive city government which all makes Sealy a unique place to visit or a great place to raise a family. Our welcome mat is always out!

Sealy’s Historic Downtown

STUDIO BLEND GALLERY & COFFEE SHOP - Studio Blend Gallery & Coffee Shop is exactly what the name encompasses; a blend of local flavors that visitors can see, drink, eat, and create. Located in downtown Sealy, it’s combination of a café, a destination venue for wedding rehearsals and private parties, as well as a working artist studio and art gallery that features over 30 local artists. Originally built by local rancher Jack Hillbolt in 1928, the structure was originally known as the Sealy City Café. Today, owners Steven and Annette Hajdik Smith work together to combine their vision and construction talents. “We still have the original neon sign, barstools and coffee bar from the early days,” said Annette. “This cool old building was like an original retro diner from the 30s with the real turquoise plaster over brick walls, red counter tops and vinyl seats with chrome; it needed an artist’s touch. It had been closed since 1982” The newly restored building has been described as “quaint, upscale, fun and fabulous,” and the team at Studio Blend works hard every day to insure that their customers not only enjoy the unique architecture, but also their café. “We serve light breakfast, lunch and desserts, as well as soup, salads and sandwiches,” said Annette. “We are also open special hours for events and offer fine art lessons for all ages and levels.” Studio Blend Gallery & Coffee Shop is located at 203 Fowlkes Street and can be reached at 281-782-4640.

BLISS - It took a pinch of good timing and a big heaping of love to create Bliss, a very distinctive boutique in downtown Sealy. Mother-daughter team, Ann Reay and Bonnie Reay, first opened their doors in the summer of 2009. “We wanted to get out of Houston and, at the time, there wasn’t much in downtown Sealy and half the buildings were empty,” said Ann. “We saw the two-story building and we had a vision. It was a fun adventure to renovate the building and help develop what we knew the downtown area could be.” However, before they could welcome shoppers, there was hard work to do the structure, both inside and out. “We didn’t do a whole lot of tearing walls down,” added Ann. “It was mostly cosmetic and maintenance work that needed to be done … water leaks, roof repairs. The building has such amazing architecture that we wanted to keep as much as we could. It would have been crazy to cover that up.” Today, Bliss offers gifts, home décor, and clothing that appeal to the senses and create a destination where customers can escape the mundane for a while. They’ve also expanded, opening two additional boutiques in Houston under the name Emerson Rose, allowing Bliss to carry a wider range of inventory than it could on its own. “We try to provide a place that is special,” said Ann. “It’s not the mall. You’re going to find items with us that you cannot find just anywhere. In addition, we have a family atmosphere with both staff and customers. It really is special.” Bliss is located at 124 Main Street and online at

CREATIVE THREADS - Gail Moore, founder and owner of Creative Threads, opened her doors on December 26, 2011 in downtown Sealy, turning what was originally an appliance store into a fabric and notions paradise. “It was an antique shop when we signed the contract,” said Moore. “We built shelves, places to put fabric, using furniture for displays.” Originally built in the 1920s, the building needed renovations to accommodate the new wares. “Fabric doesn’t fit in an appliance store,” added Moore. “I followed examples from places I had been and the way I had seen things displayed. We have over 5,000 bolts of fabric. It’s kind of like an old-fashioned hardware store – we have things everywhere.” Moore is always ready to help to newcomers to the craft and offers one-on-one, one-hour classes in crochet, knitting, sewing, and quilting at a rate of only ten dollars an hour. “I enjoy helping people with color, design and inspiration for their projects,” said Moore. “I give ideas on what people can do within their own abilities. Our pricing allows students to learn a creative way to use thread.” Creative Threads is located at 219 Fowlkes Street and can be reached at 979-398-1545.

EDWARD JONES - It was over six years ago when the stars aligned over Texas, combining an old, tired office building with two Sealy natives who just happened to also be husband and wife. In 2014, Edward Jones Financial Advisor Andy Krampitz, along with his wife, Erin, bought the office building at 201 Fowlkes Street in Sealy. Erin, an interior decorator by trade, eagerly took on the project of renovating the historic structure and turning it into a showcase they are both proud of. “Someone could have moved in here as-is,” said Andy. “But for how we wanted it, yes, it needed some work.” Instead of modernizing the old structure, the Krampitz decided to instead take a step back in time. “We kept original features,” said Andy. “In front, we exposed the beams to showcase the character of the original structure. We also ripped off sheetrock to expose the original brick behind it and I painted the duct work black so it would blend with the ceiling.” Standing proud and strong, the Edward Jones office now houses professionals ready to meet their clients’ needs. “We’re passionate about taking care of our clients,” added Andy. “Finances can be confusing and we’re here to help.” The Sealy branch of Edward Jones can be reached at 979-885-4787 or online at THE TWISTED WILLOW - It’s been three years since The Twisted Willow’s owner, Lani Miller, grasped the reigns of Sealy’s iconic downtown floral. Originally a bank, the building has stood strong with the same yesteryear appearance, and some say the same residents, for over 100 years. “It is haunted,” said Miller. “The people with the historical commission came out and they did a big show on the spirits that are here.” And it’s pretty easy to see why anyone would want to spend some time here. “It’s a beautiful building,” shared Miller. “There’s a stunning staircase, gorgeous hardwood floors, big ceilings … it’s very comfortable.” Working in an appealing atmosphere has its perks, but it’s Miller’s passion for people that pleases her the most. “I love serving my community,” said Miller. “Whether it is a time of grieving for a funeral or walking a bouquet across the street for no reason; flowers make people happy. The Twisted Willow specializes in fresh flowers, plants, custom silk arrangements, gifts, home décor, furniture, and Willow Tree. They are located at 128 Main or online at

SADDLEBACK SALOON - A historic landmark dating back to 1886, Saddleback Saloon embraces her history while continuing to grow with Tom Mendenhall at the helm since September of 2015. “All the bricks are made from Brazos River clay,” shared Mendenhall. “There’s a lot of history behind it. It was featured from the 50s to the 90s in film, including Clint Black’s first music video Killing Time, a few movies that included Kirk Douglas and Matt Damon and even a Budweiser advertisement, in England of all places.” After retiring from working in the oil and gas industry for over 41 years, Mendenhall touts his love of people as the reason behind making Saddleback Saloon his full-time gig. “It’s my masterpiece,” added Mendenhall. “I enjoy every aspect of it. And I am supported by the city, police, EDC, Main Street Manager – a lot of good people.” Saddleback Saloon is located at 207 Main Street and patrons are encouraged to follow them on Facebook for updates on their steak nights, pool tournaments, poker games, karaoke, and live music.

Link to the Past Prasek’s Family Smokehouse serves up tried-and-true favorites, Texas-style

ravel along Interstate 10 just little west of Sealy and it’s easy to discover Prasek’s Family Smokehouse, a family-owned establishment known far and wide for making their patrons’ mouths water as soon as they step in the door. “What makes us unique is our product selection and high quality of products that we make,” said Joe Svrcek, the general manager at Prasek’s ever since they opened their doors in Sealy in August of 2017. “All of the items we serve at the Big H Grill are made in the store fresh and from scratch. All of the items in our bakery department are made from scratch as well. We pride ourselves on tradition. Our recipes come from three and four generations back that originated in the Czech Republic.” And while locals may argue if a pig-in-a-blanket is really called a klobasniky, there’s no arguing that Prasek’s are the best around … no matter what you call them. While scoring their crowd-pleasing bakery items, guests are encouraged to also check out Prasek’s extensive line of jar and dry items. “We sell a lot of items that are hard to find on the open market,” added Svreck. “Some of our better sellers are quail eggs and candied jalapeños two examples that you typically won’t find at a retailer.”

Serving Up a Bit of Sealy Charm Tony’s Family Restaurant offers an old-school diner experience

An icon of Texan culture, Tony’s Family Restaurant is a

quintessential Sealy experience. Patrons are encouraged to slide into a booth, order a hand-battered chicken fried steak, and sip on a tall glass of sweet tea … a tradition since 1936. “We serve American and Hispanic foods, south of the border specialties, seafood, and a wide variety of different plates,” said Carroll Roden, Tony’s manager for over seven years. “We’re known for our breakfast, chicken fried steaks, and desserts. We’re a restaurant people like to come to again and again.” Conveniently positioned right off Interstate 10, this local dive serves hungry guests from far and wide that travel not only for the homestyle food but also for hometown hospitality. “Most of our employees have been with us for many years and they’re a great group that works hard, making my job easy,” added Roden. “Also, the food is consistently good, and we have a steam table where people in a hurry can pick up a quick plate lunch.” Although every day is a great day to visit Tony’s, Roden shared that Mother’s Day is a particularly favorite time at the restaurant. “We’re totally packed on Mothers’ Day,” said Roden. “It’s always nice

to see customers taking care of their mothers by taking them out to eat.” Tony’s enigmatic charm has helped it to resist fierce competition from fast food chains, but fans of the wayside canteen can’t be complacent. “You know, it’s one of those deals where you want your local customers to come out and support local businesses,” said Roden. “Local businesses, small businesses, need the support of the community. We feel very strongly about supporting our community, too. We like to see our customers come in the restaurant.” Tony’s Family restaurant is located at 1629 Meyer Street and online at

Offering distinctive items is the name of the game at Prasek’s and it continues with their meat products. Known for their smoked sausage, jerky and specialty meats, they remain unrivaled when it comes to serving up true Texas flavor. “We’re very proud of our extensive line of smoked sausage and jerky,’ said Svrcek. “We also have a fresh meat department that is a very high quality offering a top line of beef that you won’t find just anywhere.” All of the team members at Prasek’s pride themselves on being knowledgeable of their product line and going the extra mile to meet customer needs. Recognizing that it’s the people that make the magic happen, Svrcek is quick to share his key to success. “We welcome our customers just like they were a guest in our home,” said Svrcek. “The drive for me basically is the interaction with people, both returning customers and first timers.” Prasek’s Family Smokehouse is located at 2949 Interstate 10 Frontage Road and online at praseks. com.

Cast Iron Winery pours their wine with a distinctive dose of hospitality

usband and wife team, Sean and ChelseaHumes, fused their love of wine with their hospitality background to form a solid foundation for Cast Iron Winery in November of 2017. Today, the cozy winery and vineyard continues to expand and grow with a constant focus on their guests. “We were both hospitality majors and worked in restaurants,” said Chelsea. “Sean got his online sommelier in college and that kind of pushed us in that direction. We love bringing hospitality into the wine industry.” Part of the Texas Independence Wine Trail, Cast Iron offers live music and monthly events and is open to anyone. And the Humes recently added a new feature to enhance both their wines and their guests’ experience. “We just put in a new vineyard,” added Chelsea. “It’s a brand new varietal, Camminare Noir. They just released this grape right before the growing season this year.” Cast Iron Winery focuses on Spanish and Italian wines and, although guests can enjoy a variety of wines that will please any palette, the Humes are particularly proud of one of their reds. “Italian wine does really well out here and we are fond of our Dolcetto,” shared Chelsea. “It’s lighter like a Pinot noir but it has more spice in there.” Cast Iron Winery is located at 1657 Meir Road or online at

Over the last 10 years, John Hennessey has received thousands of emails from performance enthusiasts from around the world asking the question: Where can I go to learn how to modify cars? And the answer was clear that there just wasn’t a place where people could go and learn the fundamentals of auto performance modification. Simply put, the people in the industry who knew how to modify cars either taught themselves or learned by working around others who had the know-how. The problem with being self-taught is that it’s a long and expensive process of trial and error. And for those who learned from others, it took a long time to gain the knowledge and skills. Mission Our mission is to teach students how to make fast cars faster while instilling a strong sense of hard work, good character and basic business understanding. • Class size is limited to just 15 students. • Tuner School is a 14-week program consisting of combined classroom, workshop and racetrack instruction and hands-on experience. • Classes are held Monday through Friday from 8:30 am to 1 pm. The program consists of Combined Classroom, workshop, and Racetrack Learning. Classes are not held on weekends or on major holidays. Liedertafel Hall

n 1914, it is reposted that a German singing I society built Liedertafel Hall on land donated by

the Lux and Kinkler families. It quickly became a popular site for dances, concerts, plays and family reunions. In 1944, the Sealy Volunteer Fireman’s Association purchased the Liedertafel for the annual Fireman’s Frolic and to host other events. The building at that time was called Firemen’s Hall. In June 1945, the new Firemen’s Hall opened with a large celebration. The Houston Post reported 5,000 attendees at the 1945 Fireman’s Frolic. The firemen donated the hall to the Sealy Historical Society in 1995. In May of 2007, the Sealy Historical Society gifted the Liedertafel Hall to the City of Sealy. Today, the hall is leased and maintained by the City of Sealy. SEALY CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

After a day of fun, it’ll be time to wind down and enjoy the festive tree lighting of the park after dark and sit back to marvel as the lighted parade makes its way through town. Fantasy of Lights is sponsored by the Sealy Community Foundation, a local nonprofit organization whose mission is serving as a voice for all non-profits, with intent to advance education and charity. Cycling Around Sealy

Sealy proves popular destination for cyclists

ycling the back roads of Sealy is a peaceful, scenic, and relaxing way to spend a day in the country. Sealy has 16 mapped cycle routes for all levels of interest and endurance, boasting some of the best views in Texas. For those with limited time, check out the Brazos-Stephen F. Austin Loop. This 25-mile ride is rated five stars on and is a popular go-to because it’s paved and pretty flat. It starts on Farm-to-Market Road 1458 in San Felipe and takes riders through the long, lost town of Sunny Side and their abandoned post office and cotton gin. If you’d like a bit more of a challenge, check out the Sealy Race Team Ride. It’s a nice ride

with very light traffic, good tree coverage and rolling hills. This route is 56 miles and starts on Peschel Road within the city limits of Sealy before taking riders all the way to New Ulm and back. If you’re in the mood some seasonal beauty, do the San Felipe 1. While beautiful all year long it is especially lovely in spring, when you’ll be surrounded by bluebonnets and other wildflowers for over 57 miles. It’s a little steeper and at times there’s no shoulder, so riders are encouraged to take caution. But if you’re willing and have the endurance, the views are unparalleled. Additional cycling routes and maps can be found online at with a search of “Sealy, Texas.”
