HISTORY Colorado County was named for the Colorado River, which runs through it. The county was formed in 1836, and the City of Columbus, the county seat, may have been planned and named as early as 1823. Columbus is one of the oldest settlements in central Texas, and was established by Stephen F. Austin and his “Old 300.”  Perhaps the most notable early resident was Benjamin Beeson, who was granted a league of land south of present Columbus in 1824. Beeson’s large home near the river became a stopping point for travelers, and soon acquired the name Beeson’s Crossing. The site is now home to Beason’s Park, which sits at the bank of the Colorado River. When Sam Houston’s army retreated from Gonzales after the battle of the Alamo, it camped on the East bank of the Colorado River in Colorado County, and 6

the Mexican army camped about two miles west of the river; the armies remained for seven or eight days. Other Mexican troops under Antonio López de Santa Anna arrived on March 25, 1836, and Houston ordered a further retreat. During the Runaway Scrape hundreds of persons crossed the river at Benjamin Beeson’s ford. Colorado County, one of the original counties of the Republic of Texas, was formed in 1836 and organized in 1837. The first district court was held by Robert M. Williamson in April 1837 in Columbus. settlement grew up around the community of Frelsburg around 1839, and the first German university in the state, Hermann University, was chartered there in 1844. Two other towns, Eagle Lake and Alleyton, formed on the line of the Buffalo Bayou, Brazos, and Colorado Railway, which had begun building into Colorado County in 1859. Alleyton was at one time an important cotton shipping point. The county’s first newspaper, the Colorado Citizen, began publication in 1857 in Columbus. The newspaper is still in publication today, now known as The Colorado County Citizen, and is among the oldest surviving news publications in the State

of Texas. By 1873, the City of Weimar had been formed, like many other towns, in anticipation of the Galveston, Harrisburg, and San Antonio rail line. Weimar was named for Weimar, Germany, and D.W. Jackson donated half of the land for the town’s creation. LOCALE AND GEOGRAPHY Colorado County is crossed by Interstate Highway 10, U.S. Highways 90 and 90A, and State Highway 71, as well as by the Union Pacific railroad. The county includes 964 square miles of level to rolling land with elevations that range from 150 to 425 feet above sea level.  The average minimum temperature here in January is 41° F, and the average maximum in July is 98°.  The growing season lasts 280 days, and from 11 to 20 percent of the land is considered prime farmland. In the northwest portion of Colorado County, in the Blackland Prairie area, the land supports elm, oak, pecan, and mesquite trees along streams. The remainder is a post oak savanna, where post oak, blackjack oak, and elm grow, with walnuts and pecans along streams. Historians say this area has been the site of human habitation for approximately 12,000 years. Archaic Age hunters and gatherers lived on deer, bison, roots, and nuts right here in Colorado County. The Coco branch of the Karankawa tribe hunted through the area, and Tonkawa Indians ranged up into the area from the south.  Visitor’s Guide 2020

POPULATION AND CULTURE After dropping 15 percent between 1900 and 1910 to 18,897, Colorado County’s population remained relatively static during the twentieth century, numbering 19,129 in 1930, 17,638 in 1970, and 18,383 in 1990. Throughout most of the 20th century, Columbus, the county seat and largest town was the home of 15 to 20 percent of the county’s population. The town had 3,367 residents in 1990. According to the 2010 census population counts, Columbus has a population of 3,655, Eagle Lake has a population of 3,639 and Weimar has 2,151 residents. Colorado County is home to over 21,000 residents today.  Other unincorporated communities in the county include Sheridan, Garwood, Altair, Bernardo, Oakland, Glidden, Rock Island, Frelsburg, Borden, Chesterville, Nada, Matthews, Mentz, and Alleyton.  Colorado County is proud of its diverse cultural makeup. German, Mexican, Austrian, Native American, African, and Czech immigrants played vital roles in the creation of Colorado County, and their influences are still prevalent today.  Annual events like the Gedenke! Festival in Weimar, the Prairie Chicken Festival in Eagle Lake and the two-day Magnolia Days Festival, which attracts over 4,000, all pay tribute to the county’s rich, colorful history.  Colorado County is a food lover’s paradise with mouth-watering kolaches and klobasneks, awardwinning true Texas barbecue, famous sausage recipes over a century old, down-home Southern

cooking, breweries, and vineyards right here for you to enjoy.  If you love the great outdoors, sprawling sporting clubs, wildlife parks, golfing, hunting, fishing, and a waterpark are all within the county lines.  History buff? Well, get comfortable because it will take you days to visit all of the historic sites and markers this county is home for.  You’ll quickly see that when it comes to fun, this isn’t Colorado County’s first rodeo.  And speaking of rodeos, the annual Colorado County Fair in Columbus is over 40 years strong. Two days loaded with carnival rides and eats, live music, rodeo excitement, and much more.

ECONOMY While the overall cost of living is nearly 20 percent lower than the US average in Columbus, the quality of living here is far above average.  The City of Columbus and surrounding areas offer breathtaking, historic homes for rent or sale, ranch-style homes with spacious acreage, as well as affordable apartments and duplexes.  Of Colorado County’s 2,000-plus businesses, close to 500 of those are women-owned firms, and over 500 minority-owned firms.  Some additional advantages of our small town living include: Columbus is attractively situated approximately 90 minutes away from any point in the “Golden Triangle” of Houston, San Antonio, and Austin. Local workers enjoy commutes of less than 20 minutes of travel time to work.  With just over an hour’s drive to three of the major cities in Texas, catching flights or enjoying a quick “night in the big city” is easier than ever.  Colorado County is home to a number of industrial, healthcare, and retail businesses, with three independent school districts and two rural hospitals, including Columbus Community Hospital who was named in the Top 100 Rural Hospitals in America.  We remain powerful producers of agricultural products as well, with various crops and animals, including rice, corn, cattle, lamb, and more, raised each season.

EDUCATION Columbus Independent School District, Rice Consolidated Independent School District, and Weimar Independent School District all call Colorado County home. The county has a combined student enrollment of over 3,500 students and an average four-year graduation rate of nearly 90 percent. The districts each offer experienced educators and small teacher/student ratios, as well as career, technical and vocational opportunities, audio/visual and healthcare classes, athletics, fine arts, and much more.  Garwood Elementary School, located in the Rice CISD, was awarded the prestigious title of a National Blue Ribbon School in 2019.  Colorado County also has two private Catholic Schools for students grades pre-Kindergarten through eighth: St. Anthony Catholic School of Columbus, and St. Michael Catholic School of Weimar.  NATURE AND OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES Is hunting your bag? Colorado County has long been regarded as a hunter’s paradise. We are home to the “Goose Hunting Capital of the World,” Eagle Lake, and the entire county is prime hunting grounds for deer, squirrel, quail, rabbit, dove, and much more. Big Easy Ranch, a members and guests only sporting club situated on 2,000 acres of rolling hills in Columbus, is highly regarded to be one of only two hunting lodges in Texas endorsed by both Orvis and Shooting Sportsman. Nestled in the heart of the Lower Colorado River Valley and South Central Texas, it’s an ideal fishing destination.  Whether you want to canoe into the sunset, hunt at daybreak, or boat, fish, four-wheel, walk, bike, jog, or bird watch - Colorado County invites you to take off your boots, kick up your heels and stay awhile! Tate-SenftenbergBrandon House

Dilue Rose Harris House

Ira and Dilue Rose Harris built the house in 1858. It is of concrete construction and boasts a basement that originally had a dirt floor. Dilue participated in the “Runaway Scrape” at the end of the Texas Revolution and wrote her “reminiscences.”

Ehrenwerth Building

The home was constructed in 1867 by local businessman Phocion Tate. The house was sold in 1887 to Adolph Senftenberg, a local merchant who added the second floor and Eastlake style porches. Kenneth Brandon purchased the home in 1900 and added modern amenities to the property. The house operated as a historic house museum from the late 1960s to 2006. The home is the birthplace of J. Waddy Tate, former Mayor of Dallas.

This is the dominant building on the west side of Milam Street. The 1873 two-story commercial structure was built of bricks from a local kiln in Italianate style.

Brunson Building Charles Brunson built this building in 1891 and used it as a saloon until about 1919. He built the adjacent building in 1896. It retains much of the original Victorian styling. It now houses the Live Oak Art Center and the Courtyard Wine Bar.

Stafford Opera House

Robert Stafford built the Second Empire-style Stafford Opera House in 1886. Originally, it housed the Stafford Bank downstairs and a flat-floored opera house upstairs. The white two-story house next door was the house Bob Stafford built for his family.

Santa Claus Museum

The Carriage Step

Built in the 1860s of cypress wood on land owned by Robert Robson, this charming house is now a tea room, bed and breakfast, and is open for lunch once a month. Contact the owners to make your reservations.

16

Townsend-West House

This house was built by Marcus and Annie Townsend in 1890 and is Victorian in style with Eastlake embellishments. Townsend was a state representative and senator and sponsored the bill to buy the Alamo. Thurmond and Erma West bought the house in 1906.

As seen on The Texas Bucket List, this museum showcases the vast collections of families who’ve lived in Columbus for many generations. This is the only Santa Claus museum in the South, and with nearly 3,000 Santas decking the halls, this museum is a Christmas lover’s dream come true.

Mewes-Gant House

This house was built in nearby Alleyton by Rudolph Mewes (pronounced “Mavis”). In 1978, it was bought from the Gants and moved to Columbus and restored by preservationist Laura Ann Rau. The original German stenciling can still be seen on the walls of this quaint little house.

Old Brick Store

Built in 1850, this is the oldest brick building in Columbus. It was owned and occupied by Thomas A. Harris, a physician, from 1850 until 1867. From 1912 until 1979, the Fehrenkamps operated it as a grocery store. It now houses a clothing boutique.

Colorado County Courthouse

The courthouse is the county’s fourth courthouse and was built in 1890. It is a combination Classical Revival and Greek Revival styles. The central bell tower and roof were destroyed in the 1909 storm. They were replaced with the current central domed Tiffany-style skylight.

War Memorial Museum The water tower was built in 1883 and has 32-inch walls. It served as a water tower and firehouse until 1912. It now houses the War Memorial Museum, and tours are available by calling the Columbus Chamber of Commerce.

Abram Alley Log Cabin

The two-room cabin was built in 1836 after the Alleys returned from the “Runaway Scrape.” It is constructed of oak logs found near the Alley property at the Atascosita Crossing south of Columbus. It was moved to Columbus and restored in 1976. Preserved since the Texas Revolution, this oak log cabin houses tools, furnishings, and artifacts. Shown by appointment only. WELCOME TO COLORADO COUNTY - HOME OF THE

“GOOSE HUNTING CAPITAL of the WORLD”

T

he Eagle Lake Chamber of Commerce is pleased to welcome you to Eagle Lake, known for decades as the “Goose Hunting Capital of the World!” Eagle Lake is situated in the southeast corner of Colorado County on US Highway 90A, 60 miles southwest of Houston, and with convenient access to IH-10 and IH-59/69.

Hunters flock to Eagle Lake to hunt geese and ducks that winter in the rice fields and on the lake. If you prefer to hunt with a camera, a visit to the boardwalk and observation area in the municipal park will provide ample opportunity to capture images of hundreds of species of fowl and perhaps an alligator or two.

EAGLE LAKE LEAGUE OF ARTS (ELLA) ELLA, the Eagle Lake League of Arts, was established by area artists and patrons of the arts to stimulate and improve creative endeavors and art skills. Artistic work in the community includes sculpting, 3-D art, painting, drawing, fiber arts, quilting, writing, poetry, performing arts and photography.

OUTDOORS NOT YOUR THING? Spend some time shopping and dining out or learn about our local history at the Prairie Edge Museum and the Eagle Lake Depot Museum. Eagle Lake is also known as “A Small Town with a Big Heart.” More than just a slogan, it is a way of life here, and the Eagle Lake Chamber of Commerce looks forward to welcoming you to Eagle Lake!

Things to do, points of interest in Eagle Lake BIRD WATCHING The Eagle Lake area is unique in that we not only are in the North American Central Flyway, but the existence of a lake area with marshes, river habitat, old timber, wetland (listen for rails and swamp sparrows), and dry land farming area (a EAGLE LAKE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE myriad of sparrows, sandpipers, etc.). EAGLE LAKE DEPOT MUSEUM Located at 322 East Main Street in downtown Eagle Lake, the Eagle Lake Depot Museum represents the importance of railroad transportation for Eagle Lake and the surrounding area. Eagle Lake was served by three railroads at the peak of the era, and artifacts from these lines and many other Texas railroads are on exhibit here. The building was the former Santa Fe depot built in 1911. The building was used by that railroad until the agency transferred to Lakeside in 1970. Visitor’s Guide 2020

The museum is the proud recipient of the 2018 Preservation Texas Honor Award. The museum is open the second and fourth Saturdays of the month from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., or by appointment. It is also open on special occasions such as the Eagle Lake Home tour. PRAIRIE EDGE MUSEUM There are several prestigious museums in big cities; however, Colorado County has a unique and fascinating museum of its own: Prairie Edge Museum. Located in Eagle Lake, Prairie Edge is a small museum, but there is definitely no shortage of treasures there. The museum is curated by a group of dedicated volunteers and museum board members. The building itself is historic, built in 1926 and was the home of Universal Motor Company, a Ford dealership. The building was purchased from Jim Miller Ford to house the museum which opened in 1984. The museum has exhibits that include fossils found in the area, old press equipment from the early newspapers, signs and items from stores of long ago and memorabilia from old Eagle Lake schools. It also houses the Prairie Edge Thrift Shop, open the first and third Saturdays of each month. There are no more bullfights or gun slinger shootouts at the city square, and the sugar refinery, once the largest in the south, is now gone. However, these memories and more await visitors at Prairie Edge Museum.

The museum is open seven days a week, from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m., and 2 p.m. until 5 p.m. on weekends. ATTWATER PRAIRIE CHICKEN NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE If you enjoy serene, rolling prairies and ATWATER PRAIRIE CHICKEN NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE pastures that house animals in their native 1206 APC-NWR Road, Eagle Lake, TX 77434 environment, then you will love Attwater (979) 234-3021 Prairie Chicken National Wildlife Refuge, www.fws.gov/refuge/attwater_prairie_chicken just outside of the Eagle Lake city limits. This refuge is one of the largest remnants of coastal prairie habitat remaining in southeast Texas, and is home to one of the last populations of the critically endangered Attwater’s prairie chicken, a ground-dwelling grouse of the coastal prairie ecosystem. There are only a handful of national wildlife refuges specifically for an endangered species like the Attwater’s prairie chicken. PRAIRIE CHICKEN FESTIVAL DRAWS HUNDREDS Every second weekend in April (unless that weekend is Easter, in which case the festival is held the weekend prior), the Attwater Prairie Chicken Festival takes place at the refuge. Early morning van tours take guests to the booming grounds to watch the male prairie chicken perform his courtship dance. Festival goers can also enjoy guided wildflower and native plant tours, bird walks, birding van tours, kids corner, and Native American dancers performing the Dance of the Prairie Chicken.

FARMERS MARKET Be sure to stop by Weimar Farmers Market, held the second Saturday of each month from March through November. The market is in the parking lot of Mary’s

Pool Service, 101 W. Main Street. Contact the Weimar Area Chamber of Commerce for more information. JACKSON SQUARE On October 7, 1977, the City Council designated the 100th block of E. Jackson as Jackson Square. The Weimar Public Library is House Number 1. Businesses on the south side of the street are numbered accordingly. The original Jackson Hotel was erected in the last 1870s. The first hotel burned down and a second was built on the site in 1910. This building has housed the San Jacinto Hotel, opening in 1930 and the Weimar Country Inn bed and breakfast, opening in December 1983 and closing in 1990. It later became the corporate headquarters for Double B Foods. It is now home to the Boys and Girls Club of Champion Valley. HERITAGE SOCIETY MUSEUM Located at 125 E. Main, the Heritage Society Museum is open Wednesdays from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Visitor’s Guide 2020

and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is free and group tours are available on other days. Call 979-725-8203 or 979-725-8478 for more information. Housed in the Old Hill Bank building, the Heritage Society Museum of Weimar focuses on exhibits tracing the city’s history, beginning with the original land grant from the Spanish government to Henry Austin in 1831. Surveying tools and personal effects of Weimar’s founder, D.W. Jackson, are displayed. A dentist office, department store, bank, blacksmith forge, a facsimile of the old Mercury newspaper printing shop, and a barber shop and beauty salon make up the museum’s Main Street. The early country kitchen exhibit is complete with a Hoosier cabinet, the pride of any 1900s housewife. The Military Room features uniforms and G.I. memorabilia from World War I, World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, and the Persian Gulf conflict. The pharmacy exhibit is most impressive. One can easily imagine enjoying a long-ago Saturday afternoon with a cool fountain drink or scoop of ice cream.  Prohibition-era prescriptions for alcohol, written in 1924 for a man and his wife prompt comments about “medicinal uses” of spirits.  The newest addition to the Heritage Society Museum is the Weimar Volunteer Firefighters exhibit, which houses a vintage Seagrave pumper and hose truck, 1890 house cart, uniforms, and photographs.
